I have no issue in going alone myself, but wonder what the effect on my interview will be??

CanadaIR1 / CR1 - Montreal Timeline to Interview
I have a couple of questions in anticipation of my interview (whenever that will be, April, May?)

1. If the interview is in April, what do we do about income tax filings, will he (USC) need to file and then I bring that to the interview?

2. My husband has far less vacation than I do and we are hoping to keep that for moving this summer, what's the general consensus about me going to this interview alone (we are less than 2 years married at this point).

Appreciate any thoughts on this, thanks in advance!!

Hey Wyatt, not that its close to the embassy, but there is a place that is 24/7 that makes killer poutines called La Banquise(I think its on St. Andre st), authentic to the max! ( I live here, and when I go there I am in poutine heaven) They make more than 25 types. You have to go, seriously!

Actually what I meant was that its not within walking distance, but its a short cab right, you could go after and celebrate!!

Thanks for the good wishes for my interview, I sincerely hope so, hubs is tired of waiting !!

Hi Trailmix, got message that my I864 was accepted, no issues, and just received the police certificate today so I hustled and got the DS-230 in asap (electronic filing)

Here's hoping that I have no issues and can get in line with everyone else for Mtl soon!

Hi All: Just a question that came to me: I have 3 children (older) who are not moving with me(university is cheaper here in Quebec), but do I still list them on the DS-230 anyway?

Thanks! yes.gif

Yes, it was them, I'm taking it with a grain of salt, but since everyone on VJ seems to know so much, thought I'd throw it out there to be corrected!!

Who told you that, the people who issued the police check? Basically you just have to have the PC within 1 year of the interview date.

Good Morning and Happy Friday to all!!

Trailmix, can you adjust me as having sent my I-864 today (EP), or am I supposed to do that myself? Still trying to get used to all the options and controls on VJ!

Went for my police certificate today so DS-230 should be going out in about 10 days. One thing they told me this morning is that Montreal Consulate wants the certificate to be valid for at least 1 month after interview and they are only valid 3-6 months, does anyone have any idea about this?

Thanks!

Welcome lonie! You can find info on the police certificate here - oh and the DS-230 only applies to the beneficiary.

That is weird Andy and too bad you can't get a reply from them!

CanadaIR1 / CR1 - Montreal Timeline to Interview
Hi There!

I have been following VJ for months now, but only recently joined. I am at the NVC point and have paid the AOS and IV bills. Waiting on the hubby for the I-864 and am starting to put together the DS-230...I am filing electronically and so far so good **fingers crossed**

My question to anyone is when I fill out the DS-230 do I include just the documents for me as the beneficiary or do I need to also include the documents for my husband the petitioner?

Second question: does the police certificate need to come from the RCMP or can I go to my local police department?

Want to say that its great to have read all the forums, I've learned alot and as some have said, at least here everyone understands the frustration!!

Thanks !! smile.gif

congrats musi.. that means they still assign the date as opposed to us scheduling the interview date what ever is the next available online. The good thing is that you have a date......but make sure to call them again tomorrow to get a confirmation.

Thanks Tauruslady. I will definitely call again tomorrow if I don't receive an email from NVC today.

But I'd suggest all the people who got their case complete in May to call NVC to get their date. There's a computer glitch at Montreal so calling the NVC is probably a faster way to find out the interview date!! :hehe:

I called DOS and the lady told me my case was pending. I asked her if the case was pending at the NVC or at the Consulate? Then she just transferred me to NVC without answering my question. I was on hold for 15 minutes and finally Renée from NVC told me that my interview date is October 26. They just found out about it today (not sure what that means exactly) and they're sending out the interview letter by email to me and my husband.

I have been checking my email every 2 minutes since I spoke to her but nothing's shown up yet.

But I guess I still got a date? Oct 26, 2010?

So does it mean we should expect the packet 4 to arrive by regular snail mail or email? It'll be sent by the American consulate in Montreal or the DoS?

Yes, kimberlyk21, could you let us know what visa you are and when your NVC complete date was? Thanks!

I think Kimberlyk21 is applying for a CR1...

This may be too good to be true...BUT it SEEMS that I was able successfully to reschedule my appointment via this new self-service system.

You *do* need to have received P4 to be able to use the system. For those of you who are confused, there IS a P4 for CR1/IR1: it's the interview letter from NVC. In other words, my p4 was the letter that notified me of my ridiculous Oct. 8 date (ridiculous because I'm due to have the baby right around then).

So, those of you who haven't had a date scheduled, you prob won't be able to do anything YET. BUT...this is all probably good news for you, because: a) when you do get your P4, you'll be able to pick a date that actually works for you; and, b) I *suspect* that the changeover to this new system may have been responsible for the particularly bad delays recently. Your P4s may be coming really soon, and you'll get the new, improved version that hooks you up with the self-serve site, etc.

Btw, my husband works on computer systems kind of like this new self-serve site, and he says he thinks it's very likely that the transition to this new system was the reason for the extra suckitude with the Montreal scheduling of late...

I hope I'm right about all this...If so, you May-June people (at least) have good news coming...

PS. My new date is Oct. 28. That was the latest date I could get. It'll still be hard, but way more possible than Oct. 8!!!

C.

MTLgato I'm so happy for you! I was really mad when I saw your posts earlier about Montreal consulate's inconsideration regarding your interview date.

So let's pray that the P4 will arrive very, very soon for the rest of us (May-June NVC complete)...

Reading these posts on Visajourney can make me really emotional sometimes. :(

Can't wait to read your review! And why did it take several hours? Usually people are in and out within an hour or two.

And thanks :) I need to get to bed now. I'll get 6 and a half if I go now and fall asleep instantly. Which probably won't happen as I'll most likely lay awake for hours worrying about the interview Posted Image

Good luck to all others with May 3rd interviews! :D

I think it took longer than usual for me since the people ahead of me were taking a really long time to get put through in the interview area. Seemed like they were only calling people for interviews in booth 8.. not sure if that is normal though. I was passing the time sleeping in my chair though. My own fault for not arriving early enough lol. I got there a few minutes before 8am and left around 1pm.

I'm sure your interview will go great! :D

Approved!

I feel very relieved that its almost over and that I can be with the husband soon. They told me to expect my passport in 4 buisness days so hoping I can leave next tuesday or wednesday.

It was a long wait for the actual interview... several hours but the interview itself took less than 5 minutes. I'm just glad everything is done and over with. I'll do a review later on when I'm less tired.

CanadaStarting out - F1 or K1?
Hi everyone, I'm Eff and I'm in love.

B and I met in February 2010 through a Star Wars RPG game we both play. We were friends for quite some time and eventually grew closer. I should say right now that he was deployed to Iraq during that time and he flew me in to Texas to meet him straight off the plane when he returned home.

He came home November 2010 to El Paso, TX (Ft. Bliss). Our little "this is incredible... but we'll wait till we see each other to go nuts" evolved into full blown nuttiness. Since then, he's gotten orders for Ft. Huachuca, AZ and has just recently gotten situated at home. We visited each other a lot. He came to Montreal twice, I visited him another 3 times.

I have the "free time" that allows me to do this because I'm a nursing student. It also allows me to move down to be with him on a F1 visa next semester (September 2011). I'd have 2 more semesters to do in Arizona before graduating.

- I've already contacted the community college there and they're willing to talk with me for a full transfer of credits earned.
- I can get financial help (student loans) from the Gov't of Quebec even if I study abroad.
- We obviously plan on getting married at some point.
- I can then get a military dependent status that would get me medical insurance and waive the international student tuition. Unfortunately my soldier is a little too high-ranking for us to fall under the GI bill, but I'll consider myself extremely lucky to be able to just save the 10k/yr student tuition.

Alright, so that's the background story. I've read extensively about K1/IR-1 visas as I figured it might be easier to go the other way (enter as fiancee/wife then apply for college) but it seems the timeline is horrid... 10-12mo from application to entry is very discouraging.

My question is this : What do I tell the Officer at the student visa interview? Do I tell the truth? He'll be sponsoring me financially as the student loans come into installments and they want to know I have the total funds readily available (15k). I'm really unsure of how to go about this as I cannot bear to think of having it denied.

Thank you for your time,

Eff

Something to also consider is a home video monitor. It can trigger an e-mail or phone call if it detects motion in your house plus you can also look in if needed.

CanadaComplicated situation

Wow fast response!! Great help thank you

a few posters asked if I had a special visa as an airline pilot. To be honest, I am not sure. I don't carry any special personal paperwork with me to fly to the US. I think the situation is similar to a Canadian business man going to the us for business.

Neiks and Steve;

It sounds like in some ways, my situation is similar to yours.

One of my concerns is having to many belongings in the USA right now. I own part of a house, a boat and a car down there. In Canada I rent a room in a house, bank accounts, credit cards and more importantly I have my Job. But it looks like you both had some belongings in the US while the process was going through. Any problems with that in respect of them thinking that you might be trying to establish residence in the USA ahead of time?

I have been shopping for a lawyer getting free consultations and we are trying to decided if it's worth the 2500$ that most of them charge. So far with the consultations they all say I have 2 choices. After I get married, apply for the CR-1 from the US or from Canada. Drawback from the us application is that I would have to stay in the US for a few months without leaving the country before I can resume travels. I could get a leave of absence but that would be expensive. The Canadian route, although longer would "allow" me to travel to the US at the discretion of the border agent.

Even though I don't personally know the customs officers like Neiks does, when I travel in my pilots uniform the attitude of the officer is different. Almost a sense of being on the same team. So I think that might help a little when I go back and forth.

Question...... in order to apply from Canada, does your American spouse need to have legal residency in Canada? looking through the guide for Canadians I ran across something that suggested this. but when I asked the firms during consultations, they said no.

Anyway, I see why this site is called the Visa "Journey". By finding this site, I think our journey might be a little easier thanks to you.

Thanks Again!!

Acadia

I agree with some of the others ... your case may not be as complicated as you think. If you have the time to do some leg work and get informed ... ditch the lawyers.

Owning property in the US is not illegal. Staying more than 180 days would be a problem. Sounds to me like the CR1 would be the most interesting option for you.

UPDATE:

Guess what. It took Canada only 17 days (INCLUDING weekends) to cash the cheque from our American Bank account for my Canadian taxes. Looks like they really will always find a way to get our money... awesome.

Lol, CRA will take all and any money you give them. Getting anything back will be a very long wait though.

CanadaAny Green Card holders Ever get Authenticated?

Hopefully it doesn't come to that. :P CBP will likely authenticate anyone they need to authenticate; I was only countering the comment that a border crossing "won't take" NEXUS cards; all land crossings on both sides should accept them as ID.

Ok, I was referring to a Nexus lane.

There may not be a NEXUS lane for rapid processing, but both CBP and CBSA accept NEXUS cards as proof of identity and proof of citizenship for any land crossing. You'll go through your normal question/answer process like any other crossing, but the card will be accepted as ID.

Yes, but I have my green card as well as Cdn. passport which I showed them and they still wanted to authenticate me. Who knows maybe they will need to brand LPR's one day.

Do you have a Nexus card?

No, unfortunately they dont take it at the border that I cross and they probably never will.

if i recall, there was a big issue at the border in cornwall that also caused our CDN border guards to start carrying weapons. So i would imagine there is heightened security, that is probably why this happend. I can't find the article atm but i think it had to do with the indian reserve that is there as well.

k found a link explaining it: http://en.wikipedia....sland_(Ontario)

bascially that bridge was closed opened and closed again and we had to make a temp border crossing. from may til september of last year this happend. My sister a couple months ago crossed to visit the usa and had issues crosssing as well.

unless of course your using the other crossing...iirc there are two in cornwall.

Yes, there was an issue with the Canadian border agents having weapons. Had nothing to do with the US side. I think thats why they probably dont offer Nexxus due to certain issues. Hopefully I will be able to move out of this region one day.

I cross every day and have only been "authenticated" once late last year. Just usually get my random Nexus pass check every few months.

Hi Linda. I was wondering how it was going for you. I guess they just dont like my face.
