CanadaTraveling back and forth during process...
We're just about to send out the Packet #3, and presumably will get my interview date shortly thereafter.

The situation is we're looking to settle in Denver. I'm from Montreal. We go ack and forth for a week or two a couple of times a year, but my question is:

  • If I go there to spend time, say a month, and come back in time for the interview, does that mess with the process at all?
  • Would I be making the process longer/more difficult by traveling back and forth?

Confused, but desperately want to be there for leisure and sporting purposes right now! Just one of my top hiking, rock-climbing, kayaking destinations...but every time we go it's such a short visit! I just want some extra time to get to do these things! But...I don't know if I can do that and continue with the process while me, myself, being there!

Ideas? Experiences?

Thank you!

:)

CanadaSending Packet #3 to Local Consulate [Problem!]
I called to schedule a pick up from Loomis, and they're asking me for a company name to go with the account number provided by the CSC. There doesn't seem to be one and we can't proceed without one. I need the company name and address of the account holder...

I'm not sure how to get that?!

Ahhh!

Canada2010 Tax thread - For Canada and the U.S.

I am working on our U.S. tax return, last year we had a tax preparer do it because of the forgein income but I hate to pay them again so trying to figure it out myself. I think I have it all figured out except for converting my canadian income and tax already paid. (all my income is forgein) into U.S dollars. I know that there was a post on here saying that we can find the exchange rate for 2009 on the Federal Reserve website but I have looked but can not find anything. Can someone please tell me exactly where to look?

Thanks

Linda

Hey, I am writing a quick note. We had our interview today. Everything went well, but they said that we were insufficient with our sponsorship stuff. I had a joint sponsor and they are requiring a I864A, so I am hoping that is for my mom because I don`t have anyone that lives with me. I am asking my mom to fill it out because she was on my father`s taxes. It is weird they say he doesn`t have enough income because he alone without my mom makes more than 25% above poverty level... so anyways... we have to send it in and then they will send it to us via mail and they said to expect 4 weeks for us to get it. *sigh* another hurdle and I am not sure I understand it completely. My husband doesn`t have internet at his house, so... I probably will not be able to view the responses to this until I get back from Canada. Good luck to everyone who has their interview.

I know this delay is disappointing. I am surprised that this was not noted sooner by the NVC. Hope it gets resolved quickly.

Yes, I bet so! It's been almost a year since we have been able to be together (except for two brief visits, him here and then me there) and... FINALLY we can begin to have a bit more normalicy to our life. Wow! I am so excited! biggrin.gif

Yes, I hear ya. We dreamed for that normalicy for a long time too. We are not quite 100% there yet but it's much better than before. smile.gif

Hi there! Its nice to have another person with whom we can hope!!

I'm going to try and wait until Friday to call... anyone plan on calling sooner this week?

Yes. I plan to call everyday this week. lol I called earlier today and nothing... but I really would like to know. My nephew died from liver cancer on Sunday and I really need some good news! I admire your ability to have self control and wait til Friday.

You need the official letter with your interview date before you can get your medical. Getting the medical appointment after that is quick.

Sly

You know it's crazy to think we will be dealing with this soon. You know I have been waiting and waiting and I could be wrong but I think we will have a date soon. I almost called the NVC, but when they said we might want to try the automated system, I just hung up. I will try the hanging up and calling back til I get through next week. My case number never registered in the automated system, so I am required to talk to an operator. I am looking forward to being with my hubby, but it is cool how things here seem to be falling in place sorta like it's preparing for his arrival. I know that may sound a bit odd, but seriously that is what seems to be happening. This has been a rough year. We learned about this whole process a year ago almost. (March 28, 2007 to be exact.) We were kinda ignorant to a few things. I had to get the photos from him and the signed forms from him before I could start the process. Right before we got the news, my grandmother had passed away and left me a savings bond which paid for a lot of the immigration stuff. It would be quite a long story to really delve into what our last year has been like, but I think since everything seems to be falling into place we should know. blink.gif Yikes! It's weird to say that. I hope I am right. I hope that we have lots of good news for those at Montreal this month. You know Travis & Kim even if you get a March date, you could call and have it rescheduled for April and that might give you more availability to a date that is convienient! wink.gif Well, if any of you call, I can't wait to hear your news. I probably will call when I notice that the CR-1/IR-1 have interview dates for March... otherwise next week! I know we all are saying next week, but whistling.gif shhh... I am secretly wanting to know news this week! Dang it! lol... sorry for my rant! blush.gif

I was not able to use the automated system either ... same as you.
I also do understand when you say things are falling in place and they will. It did just that for us as well and it took quite a few years .... a long story as well.
We all have our hurdles to get through and you are just over that hump. I look forward to seeing your good news post during the next week wink.gif

I think we all just want to know right now! I am getting worried that something is wrong or there is a backlog or something because it seems to be taking so long to get an interview!

In any case, I've been thinking about my medical and have two questions.

First: For how long is the medical "good" after it is completed? (IE: Should I schedule it now or wait to hear my date?)

Second: must I have my official interview letter in order to have my medical? Or can I bring another piece of evidence to show that I am going through the immigration process?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out!

I also just called social security to inquire about my SSN. I told them I had requested a card as part of my immigration paperwork and they told me it's better to come in and do the application. Next Tuesday I will do that since I need that to get my drivers license and ultimately do the tax return.

That's a good point. After reading experiences here of people who ticked 'yes' on the DS-230 - to the SS card question and then never receive their SS card automatically - I ticked off 'no'.

I figured why would I leave it up to them laughing.gif

We waited a couple of weeks, my Husband went to the SS office and applied, within 10 days he had his card.

I agree. It's never a good idea to rely on government bureaucracy. NY DMV even sent me back to US customs because they did not stamp the import form for my car. tongue.gif

Nothing from me either. I called Fri and nothing, called Mon and they were closed for Martin Luther King day. I didn't call today. I think I will wait a bit. The more I call, the more depressed I get when I don't get a date. Ya know? If I see people here get March dates, I'll probably call. Otherwise, I will probably wait until the first Monday in Feb.

You do not need your xray anymore. You can trash it if you want. The consulate worker suggested that I keep my chest xray and give it to my new family physician once I got set up in the US, so that in the future they could have something to compare results too.

I promptly threw it in the trash at the hotel room. I hated lugging that thing around. yes.gif

Finally approved!! kicking.gif

Just got back from my interview a while ago. Bad weather today so I left early and arrived at the consulate at 7:30. There was only 1 other person waiting and they let both of us in a few minutes later.
To summarize, it was quick, easy and painless. I was finished and out of there by 8:45. There was only one moment of panic because they could not find one of my original documents. Luckily they found it clipped to a bunch of papers destined for shredding wacko.gif It made made me think that it would be a good idea to have duplicate originals just in case. Anyways, thank god she found it. The interviewer was very friendly and he only asked a few general questions about how I met my wife, what she does and what I do etc. At the end he told me that they would mail my package so I figured I would ask if I can pick up. He agreed and told me to come back tomorrow. I am now scheduled to pick up my papers and passport at the consulate at noon tomorrow. Hope the weather is better tomorrow though.

Many thanks to all the VJ gang. good.gif

Curious. Was there any reason they asked for this info?

Be careful - the woman in the article had to pay a $300 fine for just one egg.

I'll do it again, I like to live dangerously I guess. A while back, there was also a black market of Kinder eggs on ebay. I've seen the eggs sold in a Polish grocery store here too; not sure how they get them. I can't believe they're seen as more dangerous than Cracker Jack - protectionism, uh?

Hmmm...they DO typically want the letter.

It might be on its way to you via snail mail. But I would call NVC again and ask if they can somehow arrange to have it resent.

They did ask for my letter and they made a copy too...
However, it was super easy to get an appointment and I could have gone pretty much any day up to a week before my interview.

Reading all these reviews about people not getting original documents back, being conditionally approved, having to submit more information or documents worries me a LOT. My interview is in less than a week and so far the folder looks like this:

- Copy of entire I-130 Petition (all documents)
- All original documents sent at NVC stage electronically
- Copies of all documents submitted at NVC Stage
- 2 Passport pictures
- Evidence of relationship (cards addressed to both, boarding passes when we visited each other, emails, chat logs, pictures)
- Prepaid Expresspost Envelope
- Medical results (Do not Open package + X-Ray)
- Husband's recent paystubs

Did I miss anything?

Did your husband receive his W2 yet? If so, I would bring them (or a copy).
Also, to improve the chances of getting my original documents back, I would print the page recommended by Trailmix here: http://www.visajourn...h...t&p=3721056

Did you communicate with the consulate or NVC by email? If so, I would bring the emails.

... that's what I was thinking to do for our interview.

:)

You know, everyone needs to be forewarned to get your originals back at the interview. Now we have two people with important originals missing. There are obviously COs in Montreal the do not understand they are supposed to return them, so when you are at your interview you need to:

A. Ensure you have a photocopy of the original with you to give them

B. Ensure you have the originals returned to you at the interview.

You might want to print out the information on this page to take with you to the interview:

From the Department of State website:

Getting the applicant’s documents back

The applicant will receive the applicant’s original documents back at the time of the visa interview.

Note: Only one original or certified copy of each document must be submitted with the visa application. The applicant are advised, however, to obtain the necessary documents in duplicate, as this will enable the applicant to provide identical copies in the event the first set is lost or damaged.

Thank you for the link, I will definitely print this information and bring it with me. My husband's brith certificate is $5 and easy to get, but the marriage certificate and my documents were more expensive and I would not be happy to have to order a new set.

Still waiting, mon amis. Plus ca change plus c'est la meme chose? :P

They never wrote back to me about one question I had... I got the generic email with the FAQ. I'll print the "answer" they sent me just in case it becomes an issue.
I got the fancy Expresspost with the skier too :)

I'm still rather annoyed by the whole petitioner birth certificate thing. I've sent an email to NVC Montreal for clarification. I don't know if my wife can get a certified copy to me in three weeks...and I wouldn't want her to have her original taken.

I think my husband has an extra one, I'll ask him to bring it "just in case". I wonder if they would still ask for it if he's with me with his US passport and all... Please let me know if you get the confirmation that it is a requirement. Merci :)
