Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionJUNE 2010 FILERS
To give an update....

Called USCIS in November because I did not receive my card. They said they'd conduct a search and have it sent again if it wasn't sent.

At the end of January, when I still had nothing, I called again. They said they conducted a search and it showed that it was mailed to me on 10/7/10 and that it had not been returned to them as undeliverable. They suggested that I fill out application I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card and to use reason (b) my previous card was issued but never received.

Upon review of the instructions for form I-90, I found that if the card had not been returned to USCIS, I actually need to file the form using reason (a) my previous card was lost, stolen or destroyed. This entails paying the fee again and doing the biometrics again. I called to confirm this, and they could not help me. They also could no help me in figuring out certain information I had about the new card that's needed on the application (sigh...).

It was then suggested by USCIS that I visit the USCIS Field Office in my state (which I did)... basically, all I can do is fill out application I-90, request that the fees/biometrics be waived and hope for the best....

My husband and I have decided to do that : File form I-90, with a letter requesting the fees & biometrics be waived, but since the expiration of my extension of status ends in now 6 months... we're going to send the check anyways and say something along the lines of "if you decide to waive our fees, please destroy the check". We can't afford this to take another 6 months..

Any suggestions before I send out this I-90 package? Anyone else have to do this?

I received a "notice of removal of conditional basis of lawful permanent residence". The date of decision is listed as 09/27/2010. I have yet to receive my Permanent Resident Card.

Is anyone in the same boat ?

Sorry, I had just recently had a conversation with a friend and when she told me this it made sense to me, she had a baby out of country but had been looking into coming back to Canada for the birth so I thought she was well informed, obviously not. My apologies for the misinformation.

The baby, if she did come early, would be covered by OHIP.

Service Ontario will 'expedite' forms, we sent a letter asking them to rush our marriage certificate and got it in less than two weeks.

I would go if I were you, family is the best part of christmas.

Maybe I'm a little late to chime in on this but my husband and I got married in Ottawa. There was no waiting period, we were married the day after we got our licence (you can marry the same day) and the officiant sent in the order form for the marriage certificate with a note from us and a printout of the visa requirements to the registrar with our marriage licence, we received it in 10 business days.

He needed to bring his birth certificate and passport.

CanadaPolice record check in Montreal
I went to the commissionaires in Montreal this morning. The RCMP no longer does the PCC in Quebec and their website directed me to them. Call and make an appointment, it does not say so on the website but when I arrived, they asked if I had made an appointment and because I hadn't I would have to wait for an indeterminate amount of time. I complained that this info should be on the website (or if it is it shouldn't be hidden) and, in the end I didn't have to wait that long. Also make sure you have your previous addresses for the past five years (again, didn't see that on the website)
It was $55, should be ready for pick up in 48 hrs. short walk from Laurier metro. I believe Saylin used a different company near Jean-Talon metro and was pleased.

Just realized this info is pretty useless if you don't live in Montreal, but some of us do, so there you go.

Edit - yeah you did say Montreal, I had to get up really early this morning, their hours are 8-4 (and, yeah I was late for work)

CanadaMontreal Airport X Via Rail
He can get a ticket at the airport for the 747 bus (airport express) it will take him downtown and is good for the rest of the day on buses and the metro. You could get one yourself and use it both ways if you want to be there when he arrives. It's only $8, a taxi will run you closer to $50. You can find the schedule on the stm website, it stops a few places downtown but you have to buy the ticket at berri-uqam or Lionel-groulx metros or have the correct change. Also if you planned on buying a weekly or three day pass for transit they will work for the 747 but you will have to buy his downtown as they only sell the $8 ticket at the airport.

CanadaDriving my belongings to the us
So as we are in the final days of our NVC process we are starting to finalize plans for my move to California.
I'm planning to fly in on a one way ticket to deal with the POE, I plan to bring some extra luggage with me ( clothes and linens etc.).
After researching shipping companies we've decided to borrow hubby's dad's truck and take the two way road trip, for about the same money. Our place is small and I'm not bringing more than will fit in the truck, also I have a cat and he a little dog and I feel it would be good for them to meet on the cat's turf and travel together, rather than have him wait possibly hours in his cage at the airport and then fly for the first time and them be abandoned with strangers while we go to get my stuff. The cat has been on road trips before and we are certain that they will get along (obviously there will be an adjusment period but he currently lives with a 10 month old pit bull and hubby's dog is a jack tussel mix who has lived with cat's before)

Wow I really rambled on there, anyways do I need paperwork to get my things into the states if I am traveling with them? Where would I find such forms? How detailed should lists be? Any general advice? We will more than likely be entering via port Huron or Detroit as I'd like to pass through my hometown in southwestern Ontario to say bye to the family. Thanks.

CanadaDivorce
Admittedly it's been many years (10+) since my mom divorced but after separating, and living separately for a year, she and my step-dad basically signed some papers with a lawyer and that's it. If there is no fighting, and no big rush, it's a relatively simple process here in Canada.

I'm really sorry to hear that things have gone this way for you, I wish you the best.

I got my polio as part of my last tetanus shot, ask for TDap specifically. Make sure you have had 2doses of MMR in your lifetime, I had to get another because when I was a kid one was enough. I never had the other two and passed my medical fine, don't think they are required for over 18.

CanadaEncouragement Needed
I'm almost done the CR1 process (fingers crossed) in three weeks I'll get to stay with my husband for the first time instead of just visiting. All the waiting made the past ten months seem like an eternity but now I can't believe how fast things are moving. If all goes well with my interview it will have been about 10 months from noa1 to visa in hand, you might get lucky and be through even quicker. Study the guides, follow Saylin's instructions (she is a godsend to us all) spend as much time as you can together on Skype, and try to find the money to visit (I've found that taking a bus to the US and flying domestically is generally cheaper). We are lucky that we can visit during this process, people from some countries can't. This can only make your relationship stronger. Have faith in that. It will be worth it.

CanadaMontreal June 2012 Interviews!

Oh wow.......... I'm so sorry!! Hopefully, you'll be able to get the needed documentation soon and it all solved quickly.

After reading recent posts regarding how tough Montreal is on domicile, we're making sure my daughter's fiance gives her a few more pieces of documentation proving his domicile. He's never lived anywhere else, so I'm confident we'll have enough.

This is starting to get more stressful. My daughter's interview is 8am Tues June 26. Anyone else interviewing then??

I'll be waiting outside the Consulate for her, most likely on pins and needles the whole time

Mines at the same time too, I guess we can all fight for the back of the elevator ;p But honestly I don't care if I'm there all day as long as I leave with a smile on my face.

Gitme, I hope everything gets resolved quickly.

It's worth calling, just wait a week or so, once your file is at the consulate they will be able to reschedule. I tried calling right after I got my interview date and was given the runaround , told they didn't do that etc, called a week later and rescheduled without problem.

CanadaWhat to do in Montreal
Thanks for posting this, what a great idea!

As a fellow Montrealer I have a few contributions;

- if you do not buy an opus card and choose to buy regular tickets, don't throw them away - you may be asked for proof of passage. A friend visiting me from the UK got a big fine for not having his.

- On wednesday evenings, The museum of contemporary art is free and the fine art museum is half price.

- La Banquise, on rachel near park lafontaine, also has great poutine and they are open 24/7

gallantjosh, chinatown is within walking distance of champ de mars metro

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionQuestions about expiring card and interview

1) You have to send the form within the 90 days before your card expires. You can't send it after it expires. You can't send it earlier than 90 days. So send it, say, 85 days before your card expires.

2) & 3) I'd think so, but I don't know the area or if anything has changed.

4) Yes, 1 year after removal of conditions. So long as you are eligible (ie haven't been away from the US too much etcetc.)

Your card will expire before you receive your 10 year green card. They will send you a receipt that extends your green card for one more year. You will have to have this with you if you travel or need to renew your driver's licence or something.

Thanks for replying! Puts my heart at ease.

Another question, what happens if my card expires and I haven't had the interview yet (paperwork sent but no reply yet)?
Walking around with an expired card would make me feel rather nervous...

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionQuestions about expiring card and interview
Hello all,

I read the FAQ and I just wanted to make sure I understood this correctly.

1) I have to send my form before 90 days to the expiration date of my card or else I'm screwed?
My card expires on 01/21/11, so I have about 90 days and 1-2 weeks left?

As long as I file my form before the 90 days, if my card expires before my interview date it's OK?

2) The place for the biometrics exam should be the same one we went to for our green card (2 years ago)?

3) There might not be an interview? If so, where would the interview take place?
Two years ago when I had the interview for green card/AOS approval, I had to go somewhere near Seattle, WA (I live in Vancouver, WA).
Will it be the same place?

4) When do I apply for Naturalization?
On the FAQ it says 3 years after AOS, so basically after this Removal Condition, 1 more year to go?

Thanks for reading!

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionPhoto Evidence
Hello all,

I was wondering if I should send real pictures or just photocopies of them.

I haven't taken many pictures with my husband (we haven't traveled in forever, low on cash, we're always together so we don't need pictures, etc) but I only have pictures of me and him at his university graduation ceremony.
I hope that's okay *panic*

I try to find a place, no luck. I called the passport office in Canada, they do take 2x2. Saving alot of troubles.
AAA and rite aid have a better camera than wallgreen. WG make blury pictures that can be rejected. Beware of shadow in back, the camera must be straith in face. Follow all guideline here, except you can do 2x2.

CanadaHorror stories at the MTL consulate?

I've read quite a few reviews on the MTL consulate... And all seem to show a very quick and smooth interview process.
Are there any horror stories or bad experiences out there?

Got my IR1 approved on October 17th and I have to say that it was a flawless procedure. I was denied at the border in 2008 (now THAT was a horror story) so I was terrified of what they might ask me. Let me tell you, it was YEARS of me thinking the very worst of the interview and in the end, the actual interview was no more than 5 minutes. The adjudicator asked me no more than 6 or 7 very basic questions, none of which were difficult. The most difficult one was probably "Walk me through your relationship", only because it was an open ended question.

From the time I got in line to the minute I walked out of the consulate, no more than 2 hours had lapsed. So the majority of that time was waiting for my number to be called and even THAT wasn't bad at all!

In case you're curious, aside from my denial in 2008 (all due to our naiveté), there isn't a thing about my past or my relationship that would give me any problems. Not sure what made my case so easy for them to approve, but I have to say that it was a really pleasantly surprising day!

CanadaReviews of POE - Champlain, NY?
UPDATE: I used U-Pack for my move from Montreal, QC to Charlotte, NC. It cost me $830 CAD for 5 feet of linear space on a trailer (terminal to terminal, I only had 17 boxes so we loaded/unloaded ourselves)and my belongings arrived in 1.5 days. Both the Dorval, QC and Belmont, NC terminals had great staff that were helpful and friendly. I would use ABF U-Pack for another long-distance move and would recommend them to everyone!!! If anyone has any questions, give me a shout. Seriously, this was a quick and painless solution to moving all of my things.

CanadaReviews of POE - Champlain, NY?
I'm actually thinking of using U-Pack now. $400 is a great deal - where were you driving from?? My quote was more than double that (Montreal to Charlotte) for 5 feet of linear space, but I only have boxes to move so I shouldn't need more than that. When I add up the costs to move me down by car, plus the inconvenience for everyone involved, I think hiring a company now sounds like a great idea! Just have to call them to get details on what the process entails.

Oh yeah, PLUS, if I fly out of Montreal I'll be able to answer freely without the fear of my family hearing anything they shouldn't know.

CanadaReviews of POE - Champlain, NY?
Oh sorry, I definitely didn't make that part clear - no, my family doesn't know. Our little secret, although we're having our 'wedding' in March because the formality of it, and celebrating with close family & friends, is very important to me.

That's what I'll do then - hopefully the mention of my IR-1 visa will curb the questioning at the booth. I'll then tell my family to stay in the car.

Val, may I ask approximately how much it cost for you to truck your belongings down to Virginia? I don't have furniture or anything large to bring down with me so it's probably not worth hiring a company, I'm just curious.

Thanks for the input guys!

CanadaReviews of POE - Champlain, NY?
Hi all,

Mid-January, I'm crossing into the US via the Champlain POE (with an IR-1). Just looking for a bit of insight on how they proceed over there...

My immediate family is driving over the border with me to meet my hubby in Plattsburgh, as he's currently inadmissible to Canada. We'll be in 2 cars with all of my belongings - I called customs & immigration there and spoke briefly with an agent, who reassured me that I don't need any documentation for my goods since I'll be accompanying them (she said if anything, I can type up a brief list for each box). She said that as long as the 2nd car is right behind me, they're fine.

My hubby and I eloped almost 6 years ago, so I'm struggling with how to avoid being questioned too much whilst in the car, at the booth. I'm thinking of telling my family that I should be in the first car by myself, with the majority of my belongings. I love that we eloped, but this has definitely added some complications to our lives! Ah well - I'll hope that everything works out, plus I'm just happy to be at the point where I CAN worry about crossing the border, as this has been a long, drawn out process for us.

Thanks!

Use paperclips when attaching supporting personal documents to forms (do NOT use ?ACCO? fasteners; staples are acceptable when attaching fees).

CanadaTraveling back and forth during process...

No, it doesn't slow down the process. All the Canadians have done/do it regularly. Just make sure you carry proof of ties.

Moving from K-1 Process to the Canada regional forum.

What kind of proof of ties should I provide?

My job is in the travel industry and people come and go, even for months at a time... I doubt that counts as a tie to Canada, seeing as they are very loose in their terms...

CanadaTraveling back and forth during process...
We're just about to send out the Packet #3, and presumably will get my interview date shortly thereafter.

The situation is we're looking to settle in Denver. I'm from Montreal. We go ack and forth for a week or two a couple of times a year, but my question is:

  • If I go there to spend time, say a month, and come back in time for the interview, does that mess with the process at all?
  • Would I be making the process longer/more difficult by traveling back and forth?

Confused, but desperately want to be there for leisure and sporting purposes right now! Just one of my top hiking, rock-climbing, kayaking destinations...but every time we go it's such a short visit! I just want some extra time to get to do these things! But...I don't know if I can do that and continue with the process while me, myself, being there!

Ideas? Experiences?

Thank you!

:)
