CanadaWhat to do in Montreal

Anyone have any suggestions for shopping? I particularly want to look for a faux fur stole to wear with my dress, and a fascinator and birdcage veil. Any good bridal supply shops? or anything like?

Faux fur accessories you can probably find downtown, I would go to Simons: http://www.simons.ca/ It is really close to the consulate, five-minute walk or so. Harricana has beautiful things made of recycled fur, might be a little more expensive though http://www.harricana.qc.ca
If you are looking for more traditional wedding accessories, St-Hubert Street is where you want to go, you can take the metro to Jean-Talon or Beaubien (orange line) and you will find at least 15 wedding apparel stores. If not more. http://en.maplaza.ca/

Good luck with everything.

Ok.. Throughout they were more or less standard? I still would not advise anyone to risk it...

Oh, I would certainly not want anyone to risk it - just saying it's not as uniform as I originally thought.

Then it would be a urine test... But a drug test IS performed... Daily users it can be detected up to 90 days after last use... Occasional... About 30 days...

Medical is different from country to country.

There was no drug test when I went to my medical in Montreal; no urine or blood were taken/given.  After admission of drug use, maybe/probably they do it then.  Similarly, in some countries, women get full gynecological exams and I never removed my panties.

Hey guys! Still praying and hoping all of you get your interview dates soon.

And HYPER, please fill in your timeline so we can all get a better picture of what your situation is like.

Evidence of domcile is proof of where your SO lives.

I just used his pay stubs and the original I-129 papers he filled out and the letter from his work. All those things had the same home address on them so that was fine. They never asked for it though.

I am totally wondering how it all works over in all these govt. offices. How do they pick who goes first or in whatever order it is they do it in? Is it a case by case thing where some people's cases are more straightforward?

Called DOS just onw. GOT MY INTERVIEW DATE. I'm going on Sept. 28th, 2009 at 8AM in Montreal. They told me my packet 4 was sent out yesterday so I should get it next week. Only leaves me with about 2 weeks to make sure I have everything after that. I'll make a new post once I get the packet 4 just to make sure with all of you guys that I have everything I need.

So call DOS everybody. Maybe you have a date too. I hope so. Good luck to all! kicking.gif

Hi Trailmix!

Do you know if those 3 people you mentioned that are being interviewed in Sept. for K-1 are in Vancouver? Or are some of them in Montreal as well?

Also, isn't it strange that each one of those people you mentioned are all spaced out 1 week apart? They only do one K-1 interview a day?

I hope you are right July09Bride. I hope we all get our interviews for Oct. Its just quite annoying seeing that no one has a K-1 interview for Sept. Odd as hell.

Ya maybe Peachey. But honestly, what the heck! No interviews for K-1 at all in 2 months? That seems so ridiculous. School starts for University here next week so hopefully we'll get some news soon. If it is because of school visas that should all be taken care of in the next 2 weeks. UGH!

So frustrating. I just want to get a date already. I'd feel better if I at least knew the date and was waiting for it.

My packet 3 was received in July and I know there are people who sent their packet 3 in June and still haven't received word back from the Consulate. From what the Dept. of State told me they are going to be scheduling us for sometime in November.

I don't get it because I haven't seen anyone on here say they have an interview scheduled for Sept. or Oct. so it looks like IT IS taking 4 months to get an interview. What an annoyance.

Haven't done the medical already. Going to schedule it once I'm back from Florida on July 4th.

I'm just wondering how people sending in their packets at the end of June and July get their interview dates. At this point, I don't care when I get it, as long as I get it and I am approved. good.gif

Hi TDOT. Please let me know when you get your interview date. I got my NOA2 the same day as you did but I am not sending in my packet 3 until the end of July because I am leaving on vacation. Getting a few things done before my vacation like my translations and police certificate.

I'm interested to see what date you get so I can get a rough estimate when I'll get mine after sending it a month after you. Not that anything is set in stone with the consulate but at least it will give me an idea.

Anyone else who sends their packet 3 from now until mid july please keep me posted on your interview dates.

Thanks so much.

CanadaWhat Are You Reading?
You guys are totally going to laugh....I am laughing as i post it. My b-day was yesterday and I got the 2 tori spelling books. Stori telling and mommywood. LMFAO.

I must say, they are fluff pieces but they are actually fun to read.

After that I just bought myself Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse by Robert Rankin and another book called THE NIGHT OF THE GUN which is an autobiography of David Carr, NY Times writer who used to be a crackhead. Very interesting read I'm sure.

MORE GOOD NEWS! Well the first part starts off not so good....lol....my fiance did lose his job but I ended up finding him a posting for a new job in the film industry which is his field and they called him back IMMEDIATELY and want him for not a one hour interview but TWO HOURS because they are SO interested in him. The interview is Monday and I'm so happy. Being laid off on a Friday and having an awesome interview that next Monday is not the easiest thing to come by so thank god for that.

The next piece of good news is that I will be participating in a horror documentary. A girl I know is filming an independent documentary on women in horror movies and wants opinions and round table discussions done solely by women horror fans.....SO FRIGGIN' AWESOME. I'm a horror freak! HAHA!

So my good news is that even though Passport Canada screwed up and I'll only get my passport on Monday or Tuesday of next week, I have my medical scheduled at Medysis for next Friday and on Monday I am sending in the checklist and DS-230 to get my interview date. YAY! It's been a very busy morning....OH! and my Custom House accounts are all set up as of this morning as well. BONUS!

Hope everyone is having a great Friday!

CanadaUS Green Card AND Canadian Permanent Resident
Thank you to everyone for your insight. I will definitely be looking at all options but it looks like the way to go will be to just move to Florida and give up my Canadian residency and then obtain American citizenship.

From there we can always move back to Canada as a couple and get him his Canadian citizenship as well so that we can they move back and forth between the 2 countries with no problems whatsoever.

I've had surgery on my legs and both feet by one particular surgeon here in Montreal and I would really rather not use a new surgeon in the States as I have been a patient of my Canadian surgeon for over 10 years now. Thats a real concern for me, as well as my doctors that I have had here my whole life.

domegirl1978FemaleCanada2009-03-12 12:29:00
CanadaUS Green Card AND Canadian Permanent Resident
Ah well, still loads of time to figure it out. My NOA2 date is still not going to be sent out til at least July so there is plenty of time to keep hashing out the real plan. Whatever ends up happening, all I know is that I just want to be married already. After 2 years of dating and 17 years of being best friends I'm more than ready to start my life with him.....lol
domegirl1978FemaleCanada2009-03-12 11:45:00
CanadaUS Green Card AND Canadian Permanent Resident
Really??? I can come back to Canada and have a surgery and have my U.S. health provider pay for that??

How is that possible? If thats the case then that would be great as I do not want to lose my surgeons here in Montreal. We already don't have enough of them here in Quebec and the ones I have I trust with my life.
domegirl1978FemaleCanada2009-03-12 11:34:00
CanadaUS Green Card AND Canadian Permanent Resident
I know the law in Quebec is that I have to live here 183 days out of the year to retain my Medicare. If it came down to it, thats would I would do.

Trailmix was right when he said to maintain your permanent resident status in the U.S. you cannot be gone from the States for more than 365 days which would never happen. That would mean I would be living 6 months in Canada and 6 months in the U.S.
domegirl1978FemaleCanada2009-03-12 11:02:00
CanadaUS Green Card AND Canadian Permanent Resident
Thank you again Trailmix for all that new info you posted. I would never be out of the U.S. for more than 6 months out of the year. That would be way too long away from my future husband. And I wouldn't be out of the U.S. for 6 consecutive months either. More like 2 months at a time.

And my apology to TheTreble. I now see how I wrote that may have been confusing.
domegirl1978FemaleCanada2009-03-12 10:02:00
CanadaUS Green Card AND Canadian Permanent Resident
Trailmix, you have it right. I am looking to have residency in both countries if its possible. And I will look into those 2 things you stated:

"There are two things to research with residency - 1. The period of time you must be in the U.S. each year to maintain your Permanent residency and 2. Residency for tax purposes."

And SapphireDreams, you are totally right as well. I wouldn't be worried about the healthcare in this case if possible because I would retain my Canadian one and be on my future husbands plan from his work in the States. Property taxes also would not be a problem as my future husband already owns our home in Florida.

The taxes on my business are what I would be most concerned about but I figure it may be worth it to pay more in taxes to both countries just so that I could be in Canada the 6 months out of the year to be with my grandparents who are right now in good health but I'd still like to be able to be here often enough to take care of their needs as I live with them now while awaiting my K1 visa
domegirl1978FemaleCanada2009-03-12 09:59:00
CanadaUS Green Card AND Canadian Permanent Resident
And again, this is assuming that what i am asking is possible. If it is not possible to have dual residence in both Canada and the U.S. then I will just suck it up and stay permanently in the U.S. on my greencard and keep my company going from there.
domegirl1978FemaleCanada2009-03-12 09:24:00
CanadaUS Green Card AND Canadian Permanent Resident
I do plan on paying taxes in both places as I would be working in Canada and in the U.S.
I am planning on opening my own business that will allow me to be able to work from here in Canada or in Florida where my fiance is.

The person in the last post said that I don't make sense. I don't know what they mean by "doesn't make sense".

I am a Canadian citizen therefore I automatically have permanent residency here as a citizen. However once you marry and move to the States and obtain your green card you are a permanent resident of the U.S. therefore you are supposed to give up your permanent residency in Canada. You always keep your citizenship though as a Canadian unless you completely renounce it.

However, I have been told by a few people that as long as you are in Canada and in the U.S. for 6 months each out of the year that you can keep both and have dual residency. Even an accountant told me that, but again, i would like to clarify that with someone who actually knows or is doing it or has done it.

CanadaUS Green Card AND Canadian Permanent Resident
Sorry to maybe have confused. I AM a Canadian citizen born and raised in Montreal so I don't have to get my permanent residence status. I just want to keep it while also obtaining my green card.

I am in the fiance visa process right now waiting on my NOA2. I have heard mixed things on this from many people.
Anyone with any knowledge from the govt as to this?
domegirl1978FemaleCanada2009-03-12 08:46:00
CanadaUS Green Card AND Canadian Permanent Resident
I'm not sure if I am understanding correctly but are you saying that you are married or marrying an American and want to not only keep your Canadian residency AND keep your American green card?

If that IS the case then I am very interested in this as well as I want to do the same thing and live here in Canada for the 6 months and in the States for the 6 months so that I would be able to keep both.

Any other information on this would be very much appreciated.

CanadaMoving: Canada to USA. What company did u use to ship ur stuff?
While using Upack, is it possible to have my stuff shipped before actually moving to the US ?

My situation is as follows. Im moving back with my parents at the end of July because my lease ends and I can't renew it for an undetermined period of time. At first, we thought we'd store my belongings in a Uhaul storage center until it was time to move, rent a Uhaul and cross at the POE when I get my visa. Then my husband suggested that he and his dad come up, rent a Uhaul in Montreal, take my stuff and bring it to Burlington, transfer it to a new Uhaul truck and return the first truck to Montreal and go to Colorado with the one rented in Burlington(from my understanding, we'd save 1000$ doing so, dropping from 3000$ to 2000$). Im still waiting on my estimate from Upack, but if there's a big difference, I'd most likely consider it. My question is though, can I send my stuff to my inlaws house through Upack months before I move(therefore not have to store it here in Montreal until my Visa is approved) ? Is that possible ? Or I need the Visa to be able to send my stuff ?

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionJUNE 2010 FILERS
To give an update....

Called USCIS in November because I did not receive my card. They said they'd conduct a search and have it sent again if it wasn't sent.

At the end of January, when I still had nothing, I called again. They said they conducted a search and it showed that it was mailed to me on 10/7/10 and that it had not been returned to them as undeliverable. They suggested that I fill out application I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card and to use reason (b) my previous card was issued but never received.

Upon review of the instructions for form I-90, I found that if the card had not been returned to USCIS, I actually need to file the form using reason (a) my previous card was lost, stolen or destroyed. This entails paying the fee again and doing the biometrics again. I called to confirm this, and they could not help me. They also could no help me in figuring out certain information I had about the new card that's needed on the application (sigh...).

It was then suggested by USCIS that I visit the USCIS Field Office in my state (which I did)... basically, all I can do is fill out application I-90, request that the fees/biometrics be waived and hope for the best....

My husband and I have decided to do that : File form I-90, with a letter requesting the fees & biometrics be waived, but since the expiration of my extension of status ends in now 6 months... we're going to send the check anyways and say something along the lines of "if you decide to waive our fees, please destroy the check". We can't afford this to take another 6 months..

Any suggestions before I send out this I-90 package? Anyone else have to do this?
