CanadaPassport & DS-156 Question
No Rhiann, you are right in what you quoted from the FAQ. You send the checklist and the DS-230 part 1 back to the consulate to get your interview date. What you were talking about in your original post was the DS-156. That you bring with you to the interview itself along with all your other documents they require. And don't forget to also fill out the DS-160 online.

CanadaPassport & DS-156 Question
Personally I got mine renewed because they ask you for the date of issuance on one of the forms and you would want it to be the most recent date I would assume. Also, if your passport is already expiring in less than a year you would have to get it renewed regardless because they say in the packet 3 that it has to be valid for more than a year.

And as far as I can remember, you don't send the DS-156 to the Consulate itself, its brought to the actual interview.

CanadaCan I send a courier to the Montreal Consulate with my paperwork?
Confirmed by the Consulate through an email to me stating:

Yes you may send it by courier . Please remember to use your case number when contacting this office.

So I am definitely sending it by courier to this address:

General Montréal
Location 1155 rue St-Alexandré
Montréal, Québec
H3B 1Z1
for courier deliveries

And I'm sending them a short letter inside stating my case number so nothing gets lost or tied up with issues. Maybe I'll even include the front page of my packet 3 just as an extra precaution.

THANKS RON/SHARON for letting me know about this. I really appreciate it.

If thats the case then maybe I WILL send it by courier. Please let me know.

Thanks very much!

CanadaCan I send a courier to the Montreal Consulate with my paperwork?
Hi guys!

Do any of you know if its possible for me to send my checklist and DS-230 to the Montreal Consulate by courier instead of snail mail?

If its possible then that would be awesome because I would get the stuff over there Monday morning first thing.

Thanks everyone!

Does anyone have a link to the page with the I-134 instructions? I have the actual 2 pages that need to be filled out but I'd like to send my fiance the link.

Thanks so much.

CanadaHow long should I wait to call DOS?
Thanks guys. Yes, Montreal emails you back the same day. They always have in the past. So I'll wait about 3 weeks and see what information they can give me once I email them.

CanadaHow long should I wait to call DOS?
Hi guys! Hope everyone had a great weekend!

How long should I wait to call DOS to find out if I have an interview date? I don't know how long it takes the Consulate to send everything over to DOS which is why I ask. I don't want to start harassing DOS sooner than I should. whistling.gif wink.gif

Thank guys! I tried your way Sapphire and it totally worked. There is a glare in the background though so just in case they have a problem with it later on I'll make sure to have an extra passport photo handy.

Thanks guys!

Hi guys! The DS-160 application online will not accept my photo no matter what I do. What should I do?
Should I fill out the application without a photo? Will this be a problem?

Thanks!

CanadaGiving away a pet...
I'm not really giving my cat away but I am leaving him in Canada with my grandparents. My fiance is deathly allergic to the cat and it sucks because he really loves the cat but he gets horribly sick every time he comes to visit me here in Montreal.

I'm TOTALLY feeling guilty about leaving him with my grandparents even though I know they love him to death and will take very good care of him and he'll be spoiled immensely. I'll miss him terribly though and it would have been nice to have him at the house in Florida when I move down and an stuck at home not being able to work.

CanadaMONTREAL MEDYSIS MEDICAL REVIEW
Hey Inky! Holy Moly, only scotch tape....how the heck would that stop anyone from taking a peek inside their envelope.
Not that I'm saying I would do it but I also thought it would be completely sealed.

I was not pleased with Dr. Seiden not calling me back either and am very happy I ended up at Medysis.

CanadaMONTREAL MEDYSIS MEDICAL REVIEW
Hi guys! So I went for my medical exam at Medysis in Montreal today and I wanted to share my experience with all of you.

Just to say before I go into what happened today, I called them to book the appointment a week ago and they were super polite and had plenty of open times for people to go in to do their immigration medical. I called back 5 minutes after my initial call to ask them about what happens with results and got a different person on the phone and again, super pleasant and very helpful. They let me know I could pick them up 3-4 days after the tests were completed or I could leave them at the office and pick them up the day of the interview if I wanted to because the buildings are so close to each other. I was happy to have this all explained to me over the phone.

I called yesterday just to confirm what kind of payments they take and was thrilled to hear that they take debit card, visa, mastercard and of course good old cash. I've heard some places only take cash and was happy to know this was not the case at Medysis.

My appt. was for 8am this morning but i arrived at about 7:40am. They actually open at 7am to get your results and whatnot but the exams usually begin at 8am. The recptionist asked me for my passport, 3 passport photos, my letter from packet 3 and my vaccination booklet and any other medical documentation I wanted to give them. She handed my passport and packet 3 letter back to me and asked me to fill out a form (both sides).

The form has standard questions about prior health issues, alcohol and drug abuse, psychiatric problems, allergies...etc...etc... After handing it back to her I was asked to sit and wait. At 5 minutes to 8am the doctor came out and called my name. I was led into an examination room where he asked me to remove all clothing except socks and underwear and as I was doing this he was asking me if I had ever been convicted of a DUI, and was i a cigarette smoker. Those are the only 2 things he asked me about off that form. The actual physical consisted of a reflex test, checking of eyes, ears, breast exam, abdomen, back, lungs. If I was in that room for more than 7 minutes I'd be surprised. The doctor was very professional and polite

Back to the waiting room and the nurse called me in at 8:15am. She was super nice and very cool to talk too. We chatted about my having gone to funeral school and how she wanted to be a crime scene analyst while she took a vial of blood to be tested for HIV/Syphillis. I had to sign a consent form before the blood was taken for the results to be given to the consulate. She made me look at the eye chart and read the lines and then I was weighed and measured. The whole thing took 10 minutes.

Back to the waiting room....again...haha....At 8:30am I was called in for x-rays. Told to take off my shirt and bra and put on a little robe. I was told to stand in 2 different positions while they took the x-rays and then she verified they came out correctly and were clear shots and gave me a red paper to give to the receptionist. The whole thing took about 10 minutes. Again, everyone here in x-ray was super nice.

Went back out to the recptionist and she verified I had done everything I needed to get done and charged me 213.22$ and told me give them a call next week to verify that the results were ready to be picked up.

I was literally there an hour and 10 minutes and every person there was great to deal with. I would totally recommend going to them. I could not have asked for a better experience.

CanadaMTL Consulate Having Known Issues
They are suddenly also slow with email responses. I sent them my paperwork by courier this past Monday and emailed them as soon as I knew they were dropped off to ask them to please email me a confirmation that they received the papers. It's Friday and I still have not heard back from them.

However, yesterday I took a chance and called the Dept. of State. Guess what? I'm logged into their system and have been since Wednesday and am only awaiting an interview date now. HAHA! So much for that Montreal, I already got my answer. But it's to be expected and I'm really not surprised that this happened. Thanks to all the VJer's for letting me know about contacting DOS.

CanadaDepressing email from the Consulate in Montreal
I totally wish I could plan another visit but its out of the question. I was just there at the end of June and he's just lost his job so we are trying to be very careful with money because we know whats coming with AOS and the insane cost there.

Even if he had a job, we'd still have to stay in a hotel because he's allergic to my cat and gets ridiculously sick every time hes near it. More expenses we can't afford.

So we'll just have to wait it out (sigh). It could be worse of course so I won't complain. Its just depressing. But hell, we'll make the best out of the situation and right now he's busting his butt looking for a new job. Thank God for our co-sponsor because this happening so close to interview time was making us stress.

CanadaDepressing email from the Consulate in Montreal
Hi guys! So I was very happy to learn from D.O.S. that they had us logged in to their system. They gave me an answer before the Consulate. Then on Saturday I received this email from the Consulate:

We have received your documents, you are currently on a 3-4 month waiting list for an interview date.

UGH! 3-4 month waiting list. Jiminy Krispies! Are they serious? At that rate I'll be moving to the States at X-mas time.
I was pretty depressed all weekend. Hoping for the best though and hoping it doesn't take that long.

CanadaI-134 making sure I will have everything i need
Hi guys! My SO wants to fill out the I-134 info with our co-sponsor this weekend and I just want to make sure I'm not going to be missing anything I need. Can any of you tell me if I am missing anything?

I-134 filled out by SO
3 years of back taxes
3 years of back W2's
(my fiance just lost his job and is in the process of trying to get a new one right away)

I-134 filled out by co-sponsor
3 years of back taxes
3 years of W2's
proof of co-sponsor's citizenship (he became a citizen of the U.S. at the age of 9)

(my future father-in-law is the director at a major hospital so i figured his back taxes will be enough evidence as to how much money he makes every year)

I keep thinking I am missing something but can't be sure....

Thanks guys!

CanadaMontreal poe
Hi KIMBEAR! I'm actually going to be doing my POE at the Trudeau airport as well once I get my visa. I'm planning on bringing 2 big luggages and a small carry on luggage with me.

My plan is to get an early morning flight on a weekday because the airport seems to be way less crowded then. I'm going to get there about 3 hours before my flight which I think should be plenty of time for the CBP to get all my stuff done and then I'll just go sit in the terminal and read or do whatever to keep myself busy.

CanadaThree quick questions regarding Montreal Embassy
Sorry I wasn't clear there with my question. I filled out the DS-160 online and printed out the application and confirmation pages to bring to the interview.

I filled out the DS-156 by printing out the form and filling it in by hand.

I also filled out the DS-156k by printing out the form and filling it in by hand for the interview.

So my question really is: Is the DS-160 the ONLY form you need to fill out electronically online and submit that way?

CanadaUS Healthcare going Public
I'm from Montreal and I have to say that we have a major lack of family doctors and specialists here now in this province. I personally have never had a real problem with my healthcare. In fact, I must say I've been pretty damn satisfied with it. Yes, sometimes it takes a little longer to get an appt. with some of my specialists but I personally don't have anything SO wrong with me physically that I could not wait a little longer than others with more sever injuries.

Just like Sapphire said, I've been to the emergency room with cuts and breaks and I was not dying so it didn't bother me that I waited longer than people with really severe injuries. I believe someone who has a broken neck definitely should be seen before someone with a cut.

I've had to have 3 major surgeries from the age of 20-25. The first 2 were bunionectomies and I waited about 4 months for each surgery from the time the surgeon saw me. I found that to be reasonable.

In Sept. of 2002 I had to have emergency throat surgery and I was treated IMMEDIATELY in the emergency room. The doctor who operated on me literally saved my life. He said 8 more hours and I would have been dead. They treated me so well.

There will always be issues with any system. No system is perfect. But when I lived in the States as a kid, our medical bills were RIDICULOUS. Thank God we moved back to Canada and my sister had her kidney surgery here because if she had done it in Florida it would have cost my parents 130,000$. I feel for the poor kids that have to suffer because their parents can't afford it.

Changes will definitely need to be made to the U.S. system no matter what happens.

CanadaPaypal or ????
My fiance sends me money through paypal all the time. He just transfers the money from his U.S. bank account to me and I get the invoice. On my side, my Paypal account is connected to my bank here in Montreal so I just transfer the funds into there and it automatically gets changed from U.S. dollars to Canadian dollars. I've never had a problem with it. The most he's ever sent me at one time is about 600$. The fees are minimal and of course there is also the exchange rate to consider as well.

CanadaGood Immigration Lawyers in Montreal?
QUOTE (trailmix @ Apr 22 2009, 08:56 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Maybe we should have started a 'why you shouldn't use a lawyer thread' tongue_ss.gif

Lol, good idea.

I think someone should create a website that has a database of lawyer reviews (good and bad). Based on my personal experiance its a legal jungle out there where people are constantly being taken advantage of. This profession is by nature well protected and it is very difficult to get justice from any lawyer's wrong doing.

QUOTE (Cindo and Joe @ Apr 21 2009, 04:34 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hey everyone,

I'm wondering if any of you could reccommend any good immigration lawyers in the Montreal area?

My girlfriend (who I plan on marrying) would feel better if we went through a consultation for our options with a hired professional. Someone who is knowledgeable in both immigrating to the U.S. and also immigrating to Canada.

Thanks!
-Joe

Most people here have not used lawyers. I can only say one word ... CAUTION.

I think its better and smarter to do your research in here. We have many folks here that are much better and it wont cost you a thing.
