Middle East and North AfricaFriends of our MENA SOs
When Hachemi first came here, he didnt know anyone. If someone said something to him, he would look at me and let me answer. He was very shy about talking to people. Now a year and a half later, I cant get him to shut up. lol. Like after he first came when we where at my son's soccer games, he just sat there quietly with me. All the other men kinda congregated together, yelled for the team, talked and laughed. I kinda felt bad cause he wasnt a part of it. Now......he is the loudest one yelling for the team and he will stand with the guys talking and laughing. I was watching him this past weekend at my son's soccer games and it makes me proud that he has friends and acquaintances. My son's coach is Algerian, they are not like best friends, but they do call and visit each other some. There is a Tunisian guy and his American wife that are our very good friends. There is one other Algerian here that Hachemi met, but he does not have good character and he doesnt like him. Neither does the Tunisian or the my son's coach. This is a very small town. So not many Arabs or Muslims around. Our Mosque is about 45 minutes drive from here near the University. We dont get to go often, but Hachemi has made some friends from there that he keeps in contact by phone. There is one Algerian that is an assistant professor, that he really likes. I did not try to push Hachemi to make friends. He just slowly built up his confidence and got out there on his own just meeting people. It will come. You just need to have patience.

Middle East and North AfricaIt's Sunday!
QUOTE (Nagishkaw @ Apr 27 2008, 03:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I have to give mine right back to the feds. It will go towards AOS.

OMGosh, Meriem! What a great pond! Is that slate around it?

Hi Nagi, Most of the rocks I scavenged for in an old quarry. the big big ones was given to me by our Algerian friend. He had them in his yard around an old tree that was cut. He was about to haul them away. The slate ones I had to buy from a rock yard. I need some more to fill in some empty spaces. I havent spent much on it at all. The liner is part of an old inground pool liner that my neighbor was about to discard. The water plants I found from around the area. The only other thing I had to spend money on was the waterfall pump and tubing. Oh yea, and the koi fish.

Take care,
Meriem

Middle East and North AfricaIt's Sunday!
Last year WoM posted some pics of the goldfish pond that her and her husband built in their back yard. I had one at my old house and planned to build one at our new house. When I saw the pics of hers it got me motivated. Last year when Hachemi wasnt working I told him for my birthday I wanted a hole dug in the back yard. I made the shape with a water hose and told him how deep I wanted it. Hachemi and my son dug for 2 days. Here is some pics of my pond now. That is my granddaughter, Annalee in the pic.

Middle East and North AfricaMENA Diplomas
I would definetly have his diplomas translated. I see no need for the embassy signing off on them. Just get them certified by the translator. It may be worth getting his transripts also translated just for your benifit. You will probably need to use a creditialing service to get his transripts evaluated for professional or educational purposes. The service will request that the transripts come straight from the university to them (translated). They will in no way accept transcripts from you. It took several months for the University in Algeria to send Hachemi's transripts. Hachemi needed it because he was going back to school. The college he attends only uses World Education Service so we had to go with them. They did creditial 90 hours of his college credits from Algeria. There are many services like this, but here is the link to WES. It cost us about 160 dollars to do it. They will request that you send copies of his translated diplomas. It is ok to send those by yourself. Good luck.

It's just a drop in the bucket to them. Like in UAE, the lower the number on a car license plate the more it cost. Earlier this year the
number “5” license plate sold for $6.8 million dollars and another 300 vanity plates sold for another $56 million at auction. The number “1” was auctioned for 14 million. blink.gif

Middle East and North AfricaSo does it really suck when they get here or what?
Hachemi lived in a household with mom, dad and 2 sisters. Mom and sisters waited on the men hand and foot. I remember when I was in Algeria at his family's home, he unwrapped a piece of candy and threw the wrapper on the floor. I noticed he did that often. I told him to pick it up and put it in the garbage. I said you mom and sisters work very hard taking care of you, and his poor mom after cooking and cleaning all day would be exhausted at the end of the day. I reminded him that is exactly why his mom is so exhausted. I let him know that he would not be doing that at our home and he would have responsibilities. He usually picks up after himself now and helps me out a lot. Since he is in school full time, I kinda let it slide because I want him to concentrate on his studies. He had no adjustment problems and only recently after a yr and a half mentioned being (his words) "sick at home" (homesick) laughing.gif . He said not missing Algeria, but missing his mom. Our only and biggest fights where when I was teaching him to drive. He would not listen to me and would get mad and defensive if I tried to tell him something. He scared me so bad that I thought I was going to die many times, lol. If your SO needs to learn to drive, I suggest driving school, lol. He now drives very good, but I still have flashbacks. lol.
