Yay! ! ! Veryyyy exciting! Isnt it an awesome feeling!?

Thanks ladies!!! Yes it is an awesome feeling. I am so proud of him. I hope everyone's Visa Journey goes as smooth as ours did. Only had one little incident when they misspelled Hachemi's name on his greencard. Other than that it was a smooth ride!

I have been Muslim for 4 years now, and all that time I wanted so bad to wear hijab but I was afraid. I live in a small town in north Mississippi. There is 2 other Algerians and 1 Tunisian with non Muslim wifes. So I am the only Muslimah in town. My new year's resolution this year was that I would start wearing my scarf. I didnt before because I was more afraid for my teenage son. He's 16 and I was afraid what his friends would say to him. I walked out of the house in January with a scarf on my head and I have never looked back. I went to my son's sports banquet and my son hid from me. He was embarrased and would not even go to school the next day. He went 2 days later and when he got home I asked him what anyone said to him. He smiled and said only one kid came up to him and said " Man, my mom is Muslim too." He said she lives in another town though. Now he isnt bothered by it at all, and still has all the same friends. They asked me why I wear it and I explained to them the reasons and they dont think anything about it now. I have not had one negative comment, but have noticed confused stares. I have been asked what is wrong with me, am I sick. I have had people curious about my hijab just come up to me and ask me why I wear it, and it is a good opportunity to educate people about Islam. I have been asked if I wear it for my husband. Or if I wear it because it shows I am married. One man asked me if I was from India, LOL. I have pretty good peripheral vision and I have noticed people staring in shock, trying to figure out what I am. I just go on my merry way. I dont regret wearing hijab at all. I would definitely feel naked if I was to go out without it now.

one more question, there is not really a place for me to pray at work. What do you do when at work?

I just wanted to say Welcome to Islam, my new Sister! good.gif My husband does not have a place to pray at work either. He will go sit in his vehicle on his break and do his prayer sitting in the truck. As far as makeup, before I would not leave the house without being made up. Now it is not so important. My husband has never said that I couldnt wear makeup, but has said that he preferred I didnt telling me that he loved my natural skin. So over time I just got use to going without it.

I'm neither a Muslim nor am I marrying anyone from a MENA nation, but I just thought I'd ask - female USC's with Muslim MENA beneficiaries, what prompted you personally to convert to Islam? Was it truly a decision you made prior to meeting your mate, or was it to ensure that your mate would be marrying a Muslim woman, or was it because the faith truly appealed to you? And if the latter, what was it about the faith that convinced you to adopt it?

This is totally not a sarcastic or rude question, but one of genuine curiosity.

Middle East and North AfricaAmerican women's PR husband deported to Pakistan
At the very bottom page of her blog, she talks about the track back, I think that is what it's called, Anyway, she noticed that someone from the Dept of Homeland security was reading their blog. She didnt know if she should be happy or scared. She also saw that her congressmans office was reading the blog, so maybe they can get some help.

I dont understand it either. They try to explain it in one of the videos. They threatened to send him to Gitmo. They also tassered him at some point. He had not been to Paki since he came to the US as a student 20 something years ago. But after the abuse he begged to be sent back to Paki and they did.

I found this blog yesterday. It is so sad that something like this could happen. Her husband of 7 years that had been in the US legally for twenty something years (has a GC) was arrested by ice, threatened, tortured, and deported. The woman's father had contacted immigration and told them that the husband had ties to terrorism. The father was angry because his daughter reverted to Islam. What is sad is they had 2 little children at the time.

Middle East and North AfricaGRAND PRIZE WINNER - OneNation Film Contest
GRAND PRIZE WINNER - OneNation Film Contest (Also winner in the American Muslim Category)
"Arab in America" chronicles the journey of an American-born character named, "Osama Ahmed Abou-Bakr" and his plight to find a job in America's post-9/11 atmosphere. The story highlights the hardships of Middle Easterners and Muslims living in the United States of America. The character, "Osama", a recent college graduate, cannot get anyone to hire him so he resorts to a drastic measure: he changes his name from "Osama Ahmed Abou-Bakr" to the more appealing "Samuel Adam Baker". Instantly, he's offered a high-paying job at a prestigious company. However, concealing his true identity turns into a daunting task that unfortunately "Sam" cannot keep up and eventually comes clean. The script is loosely based on real-life events that continue to plague Nabil's cousin, Nidal Abo-Hareb, his father, Zouheir Abou-Harb, his brother, Osama Abou-Harb, and himself.

Middle East and North AfricaThe time has come....
........to lift conditions. I have the I-751 completed and a sh*t load of evidence. The downside is that is is going to Vermont. ( the slowest center) I am going to the P.O. in a few minutes to get it shipped off. You know, Hachemi only had a the actual GC for 2 days. We had to send it back with an I-90 because his name was misspelled. We have been to USCIS in Memphis 3 times over the last year and a half to find out whats up with his Green Card. We had delivery confirmation the they did receive the GC and the I-90 at CSC. Anyway, they always told us that they would try and find out and let us know. Well, they never let us know, so we have been without a GC this whole time. They were nice enough to stamp his passport each time with a I-551 stamp. The one he has now expires in Dec. 09. I did make a copy of the green card before I sent it back. I included that with an explanation of what happened.

Hachemi is 35 and I am 48. The only thing that was said about my age was by my FIL. He asked Hachemi was he sure he wanted to marry a women that will not be able to give you children? Of course he said yes. good.gif My MIL loves me and told Hachemi that he better take good care of me. She can not stand her two Algerian daughter in laws. One of my brother in laws just told my MIL that his wife is expecting and when my MIL said something about it, she denied it. It makes my MIL so angry. lol. Hachemi is a middle child, 2 older brothers and 2 younger sisters.

Hi, Welcome to VJ.
I made a folder in yahoo email and each time my husband sent an email I moved it to the folder. And he did the same with the emails I sent. When I got ready to print I just clicked on the folder. It showed a list of emails with just the topic and date. I did not print out each email. To much personal stuff in the emails. I used the "print screen button" and pasted it into a word document. You may have to use the landscape view in the word document to get all the information. We used skype to talk so I did the same thing with the skype history. If you want to save the chat message conversations, you will have to go in and make sure yahoo archives all your chats. I just printed out the first page of 3 or 4 chats we had each month each month, but it is up to you how many you want to include. I am sure you can never recover your previous chats. Just make sure that they are saved from now. Most of the time I went ahead and printed everything as we went, because you never know what will happen to the ones saved on the computer. If they disapear, it will be impossible to recover them. My husband called on my mobile phone so I alway had the bill with the list of incoming and outgoing phone calls from Algeria.

I can't get Hachemi to go home and visit. I have handed him the money twice to go home and he said, "not now, let's just do something for us with the money." When I mention going and visiting, he just says no, not now. He misses his family, but he does not miss Algeria. He loves it here in the US. He talks with them on the webcam for several hours on the weekends so I guess it keeps him from being homesick. I would love to go and see his family. Expecially now since his brother and wife, just had a baby girl. It is the first grandchild for Hachemi's parents.

Middle East and North AfricaCollege for my husband
It took forever to get Hachemi's university in Algeria to send the transcripts to WES. His mom went several times over a 6 month period to the University with no luck. I think the man was wanting a bribe. I know my father in law contacted a good friend of his that was a superior to the man that would not sign the papers and get the transcript back to WES. That man lost his position because of this and it was soon after WES received the documents. Hachemi did not have to take the TOEFL. You need to ask the University or college that you spouse will attend, because we had Hachemi's official transcripts and they would not accept them from us, only WES. The college my husband attends said if he could not get the documents, his only other option was to take the GED to get admitted. Good luck.

I did a search and didn't see it posted anywhere....and I know I'm always looking for a great resource for recipes that I can cook for Sehrab.

www.dedemed.com
http://www.youtube.com/user/dedemed

The recipes are presented in a user friendly format accompanied with video. She's Lebanese but living in USA..so no need to try to take an arabic recipe and figure out what that is here in the USA. Sehrab is going to try his hand at Kanafeh today while I'm at work. Happy eating!!

I really like her videos. I posted her video for making shwarma in Sultan's kitchen. It is sooo good.

QUOTE (palilover @ Jun 2 2009, 10:30 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hey
I need to ask someone if they know anyone in Jordan. My husband is stranded in Jordan. He has his jordanian passport and is there for work. He can start a new job tomorrow. The problem was that since it took him 2 months to get the money to return to Jordan, the jordanian government made him pay for a new passport and now he is on the streets with nothing. He has only had falafal and water to eat from a stand and that is it for the day as he is scared to part with his last money:(
Does anyone know anyone he can stay with until he gets his first paycheck? (in a month per his soon to be boss). He has tried asking on the street and no one will help him and he has asked a few imams and they all give him attitude and asking him why he came to Jordan without money. He had money but he had to spend it to get a new passport.
Please pm me. thanks

This is terrible. I hope he finds help soon. Is there any way you can western union him some money?

Middle East and North AfricaMuslims and Public Displays of Affection
In Algeria, we would occasionally walk hand in hand or my arm in his. Here in the states most of the time he holds my hand or puts his arm around me. He will hug me and give me a quick kiss on the lips or the cheek in public.

Hachemi's family had a satellite dish with about 900 or so channels. They got French, German, Arabic and English channels. As the family would sit around in the evenings watching tv, his dad would have control of the remote. His dad would flip the channel as soon as it looked like a couple was about to kiss. Twice while I was there a couple was about to kiss and he flipped the channel quickly right to a porno channel where there was a couple getting it on. He would quickly flip it again. I just burried my face in my hands. blush.gif
