Middle East and North AfricaThe little things your husband/wife does
There are many, but I will list a few.....
Hachemi will come home on his 30 minute lunch break, just to get a kiss. Then go straight back to work.
He saved his extra money for 4 months to buy a laptop computer for me.
I still have trouble with my neck and back after our bad wreck last year, and when we where in Books a Million, he bought a book on therapeutic massage. He gives a really good massage now.
I will be in the bedroom, and Hachemi in the den. I get a text message from him. "Love U"

Middle East and North AfricaMENA class of 04-08 ladies
I'm here. Still check in every once in a while. Mostly lurking. Class of 05-06. We will have our 6th Anniversary in Sept and still very happy "with our heads up in the clouds" lol. My DH is just as sweet and loving as when we first met. He has his citizenship and his working for Toyota Manufacturing. It took him about 5 yrs working at piddly jobs to find a great paying job with wonderful benefits. For the record, I have 2 other friends that I met here on VJ (older wife, younger Algerian husband) that are all still happily married. I met them here on VJ when I first joined. We all went through the visa process with nearly the same timelines. They just don't come around on VJ anymore.

Middle East and North AfricaHas marriage & life been what you expected?
We will be celebrating 6 yrs of marriage in Sept. After Hachemi got here he adapted really well. I survived teaching him to drive. lol. That was a hoot. I thought I was gonna die several times. We did have a horrible wreck when he had his permit but it wasnt his fault. Our car was totaled, but we were ok. Cant say that for the motorcycle that was crushed between us and the dude that hit us. He was hurt pretty bad, but survived. Hachemi is now a great driver and goes anywhere he wants.

He was hired with his first application after getting his green card at a boat manufacturing plant. He worked there one yr before he decided to go back to school. He already had a computer science degree. He went to the community college and got an associate degree in computer networking. He graduated with special honors and had a 3.96 gpa. While he was going to school he would visit the convenience store down the street to get coffee when he was studying late. They asked him if he needed a job. He told them he would work if he could get hours around his classes. He worked there for 3 years.

Toyota was building a huge manufacturing plant about 45 miles from our house. He thought about applying but we had made plans to go visit his family in Algeria November of 2010. We stayed for a month and when we came home he decided to apply and was hired. There were 43,000 applications and they hired 1200. It is a wonderful company to work for and they have the best insurance I have ever had. We put our house up for sale and bought a house in the town closer to his work. Thank God it only took 45 days to sell!

I had already had a hysterectomy when we married. I would most likely been to old to have kids, but I know several women that had kids in their 40's. It just wasnt meant to be. We had discussed this fact prior to marrying. Hachemi has crohn's disease which is well controlled with medication but he always worried about having kids because he didnt want to pass it on. We have kitties as our kids. He loves his kitty cats!

My husband is now a citizen and is very happy living in the US. He misses his family, but not Algeria. He talks to them on Skype every Sunday for a couple of hours. Hachemi is still the sweet loving man I first married. He hasn't changed a bit. He just adores me and I feel so lucky to have him. Hachemi does not cook or clean. He really doesnt know how. Thanks to his mom and sisters who did everything for him. Every once in a while he will run the vacuum. I dont work so it's all up to me and I don't mind. He works so hard at his job, I just don't ask him to help. I also do the yard work because I am afraid he will run over my flowers. I am very particular about my plants and flowers LOl. I didnt even let my son do it because he is so careless. I let my next door neighbor borrow my riding mower last week and when I got home I almost had a heart attack because he mowed my yard in return for letting him use the mower.

If I had any advice for your SO's, It would be that taking any job, even though it is not what they want to do, will build work history. Just be patient and hang in there. It took Hachemi about 5 years to finally get a great paying job with wonderful benefits.

Grand Hotel Regina is the one I stayed in both times I went to Algeria . It is very inexpensive and right in downtown Algiers. It was nice and clean. The very cheap rooms, do not have a bathroom, You have to use a public one, so make sure you ask for a room with one. LOL

Middle East and North AfricaAlgerian visas? Tourist or Family visit?

It will be a "family guest visa" and you will need a notarized invitation from the city hall of the place of residence of the Algerian host.

You need a copy of you flight itinerary. You have to buy the ticket to get the visa. They have to know the dates you will arrive and how long you plan on staying. I never had to have a "letter of employment" and I have been 4 times to Algeria. They ask for your employer name and address on the visa application. I am not employed and I just put "not employed."

Mommy2 Z n S, it is really not that hard. If you can did a big hole that will get you started. Just remember the bigger it is the more cost to build and it is harder to take care of. That is why this one is so much smaller than my other one I had. lol. Lowe's and home depot is where I bought my supplies.

WoM, I love that bush. Wonder if the humming birds like it. I want to plant some flowering bushes that will attract humming birds.

Thank you WoM! Inluvwaiting, our house is L shaped. It is the back-side of the house. I just thought that was a perfect place. I went out with a shovel to test the ground's hardness and it was a soft sandy dirt. I started digging and before I knew it I had a big hole. LOL At our old house several years ago, when Hachemi first got here, he asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I told him a hole in the ground. I had big plans to build a gold fish pond. I lined out the shape with the water hose and my son and hubbie spent 3 days using a pick ax and shovel digging that pond. The ground was so hard. He came home from work that day I was digging , he got out of his truck and gave me a stern look. lol. He was remembering that other hole. He was laughing going in the house saying "don't talk to me!" Like, don't ask me to dig. LOL. I said "its already dug!"

I had a garden last year. I had made some raised beds with a variety of vegetables. When Hachemi got his new job, we put our house up for sale and bought a cute little house closer to his work. The lady that lived here passed away at the hospice place. She loved to garden and it has been so much fun watching her flowers bloom. Everyday I go out to see what is blooming. I have a huge pear tree full of pears, 2 peach trees, 2 apple trees, and a big ole pecan tree. I have added a few things. A couple of grape vines, a pomegranate tree and a little fig tree that I had rooted and transferred from the other house. I did get to transfer some of my flowers from our old house before it sold. We were so happy to sell our other house in only 45 days. I built a little gold fish pond at the new house. I had one at my other house and I missed my little fishies. I didnt get it done before it sold it so didnt get to transfer my koi, but I bought some new babies for the new pond. LOl My new pond is about 5 x 7 feet. It is only a third of the size of the one at the other house.
I planted some herbs in a big pot and did transfer some of my mint from my other house. It's growing really quick. I am not going to plant vegetables this year. Maybe next year.

Middle East and North AfricaOlder American woman Younger Algerian man

Hi, It's been a while. I just popped in and noticed I was mentioned in this thread. Hachemi and I celebrated our 7th anniverary in Sept. We are still very happily married. My husband has not changed since the day I met him. He still adores me as I do him. In our case there is an age difference of 12 1/2 years.  But what I think helped make our marriage be succesful, is that I met him when he was in his 30's and I was in my mid 40's. Now my sweety is 40 and I hate to say my age now. (You can do the math). LOL. He still adores me as I do him. We have so much fun together.  It took him 5 years of working min. wage crappy jobs and finally someone saw in him what I did and gave him a chance. He has a great job, been in his position 2 years, and making pretty decent money with great benifits.

I wish I had some good advice to give. It's just hard for me to give any helpful advice with such a large age difference and the guy being so very young. So I will just leave it at that.

My friend Cheryl and her husband Kamel (Algerian) are still happily married also for 7 years. We met here on visa journey and since they are about a 100 or so miles from us, we meet often in person and spend time together.

Kat, so nice to hear that you are happy. I don't know if you remember, but my husband is from Setif also.

Kabsa is delicious! When I make it I don't remove the chicken, I just add he rice and cook it in the oven. It steams very nicely in the oven. I usually use Uncle Ben's rice because its pretty much fool proof in this recipe plus you won't have to soak it like basmati. For the spice mix I use curry powder, tumeric, cinnamon, cumin, all spice, cardamon and coriander. No cloves as I find it a bit strong. I don't add carrots but imagine it would taste good. I mix the yellow raisins in with the rice instead of putting on top.

Thanks for the tips! I have been to busy to make it the last few days, but I am going to try it soon! Inshaallah

Middle East Yemen Honey Pie

Ingredients:
Middle East Honey Pie (Yemen)

Bint as-Sahan Honey Pie: Makes two pies:

In Yemen, on special occasions in the homes of the affluent, bint as-sahn is always served as a first course; at other times it is eaten during the meal. However, it makes an excellent dessert.

4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 package yeast, dissolved in 1/2 cup of warm water
5 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons milk
1 cup butter, melted
1 cup honey

Instructions:
Thoroughly mix flour and salt in a mixing bowl; then make a well in the middle. In a separate bowl, combine yeast, eggs, and milk. then pour into the flour. Knead into dough, adding more milk or flour if necessary. Cover and allow to stand in warm place for one hour.

Form into 12 balls and place on a floured surface; cover with damp cloth and allow to stand for 30 minutes. Roll balls into rounds the size of a pie plate; set aside.

Place a round in a buttered pie plate; then brush with butter. Add five more rounds, brushing each with butter. In a second pie plate, repeat with the other six rounds.

Mix remaining butter with honey; then brush generously.

Bake in an oven preheated to 350 degrees F., for 25 minutes or until the tops turn golden brown. Remove from oven; immediately pour half the remaining butter-honey mixture over tops of both pies. Allow to stand for 20 minutes; then cut into wedges. Serve with the remaining butter-honey mixture on the side for diners to add according to taste.

I tried a new recipe tonight and Hachemi and I really liked it.

Bon Appetit!

GREEK GYRO MEAT

1 lb. ground lamb (or use 1/2 ground lamb and 1/2 ground beef)
1/2 c. very finely chopped (or shredded) onion
2 tsp. fresh minced garlic
3/4 tsp. salt (preferably sea salt)
1/2 tsp. dried ground marjoram
1/2 tsp. dried ground rosemary
1/4 tsp. black pepper
Pita bread

Mix everything together and let sit in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours. (Go ahead and make the Gyro cucumber sauce recipe below). After 1-2 hours take the meat out and blend it in a food processor for 1-2 minutes. (When cooked, this will help give it a more traditional gyro feel on your palate. Otherwise, it just takes like cooked minced meat.)

Form into a meatloaf shape and bake in the oven for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, at 325ºF. It should be a bit dry.
Slice gyro meat thinly and place on (or in) pita bread, Garnish with the cucumber sauce. I also put some chopped tomatoes and a little lettuce and folded the ends of the pita over the top of the meat.

While meat is in the refrigerator make Gyro cucumber sauce.

GYRO CUCUMBER SAUCE

When it comes to making thicker cucumber

sauce... moisture (water) will make the sauce

When I was in Algeria, we would eat these delicious croissants with chocolate in the middle for breakfast. I had read a few recipes but they seemed quite difficult to make. I found this recipe on you tube and have made them twice this week and they turned out great. It is a little time consuming but well worth it. You will have to make them on your day off. I have found that the dough is a little sticky when kneading, and I added a little extra flour as I was kneading and it did just fine. She didn't specify in the recipe but use all purpose flour and semi sweet baking chocolate. The second time I made them I put chocolate in both the triangle and the square croissant, just because my husband requested it. good.gif

Egyptian Hawawshi

Ingredients:

12 Pita loaves Bread, baladi (I buy the smaller pita loaves from our local ME store and split them open to fill w/ meat)
2 lbs Ground Beef
4 Large Onions, chopped (sweet onions rock!)
6 Cloves of Garlic, minced
2 Large Red Peppers, minced
2 Large Yellow Peppers, minced
2 Green Chili Pepper, cut into very small pieces (I do not add this...hubby hates anything to hot)
4 Small Tomatoes, minced
4-6 TBSP All Spices (we have an Egyptian 6 spice mixture you can try to find this in the markets)
2 tsp Nutmeg
2 tsp Cinnamon
Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions:

In a large bowl mix minced ground beef, onions, chili pepper/peppers, tomatoes, all spices, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt and pepper.

Open half of bread loaves on the side.

Divide meat mixture inside bread and spread with your hands to make an even layer about 1/4inch thick.

Spread meat till the edges.

Brush bread loaves from both sides with oil (optional, we do not do this its to greasy for me).

Put each loaf on a piece of aluminum foil and fold the sides over the loaf (seal it closed).

Heat oven to 450c.

Put hawawshi folded in aluminum foil in oven on the middle rack for about 40-60 minutes until meat is cooked and bread becomes crispy.

Serve immediately. kicking.gif

We typically make cucumber salad on the side. Sooooo tasty...I dip it! tongue.gif

I made some homemade pita bread today and cooked this recipe. OMG, it was delicious. The only thing I did different was put all the ingredients in a food processor. Then after spreading the meat mixture in the bread, I added some cheese in there too.

Algerian Green Bean and Lamb Tagine

3 Tablespoons Oil
2 lbs boneless Lamb Shoulder, cut into 1 inch chunks
1 medium Onion, chopped
4 Cloves Garlic, minced
1 teaspoon Salt, to taste
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground Black Pepper
1 teaspoon ground Cumin
1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
1/2 teaspoon Saffron or Turmeric
4 cups Water
1 1/2 lbs Green Beans, cut into 2 inch pieces ( I used frozen)
2 Tomatoes, diced or 1 can of diced tomatoes
1 medium Onion, sliced in rings
4 Tablespoons Parsley, chopped
1 teaspoon ground Cumin

Method for making Algerian Green Bean and Lamb Tagine

Heat oil in a large saucepan or soup pot. Add the lamb, onion and garlic and sautee til lamb is browned. Add the salt, pepper, 1 teaspoon cumin, cayenne and saffron (or turmeric) and sautee a minute more. Add water and tomatoes and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for about 45 minutes. (I put it in a pressure cooker for 20 minutes.) Add the green beans and simmer for about 10 minutes more, until almost tender. Add the 2nd sliced onion, parsley and remaining 1 teaspoon cumin. Simmer for about 10 minutes more. Serve hot over couscous.
