I was listening to one of his speeches eariler to day..it brought me to tears, jus thinking about what coulda been, had not been for him.

He was a man of such integrity...I remember, even before reading this article, that they said he seemed to have known that the end was near. I remember seeing a documentary of one of his last speeches and the windows were banging and he seemed a little jumpy. It was something to see...I have nothing but love for that man and his wife was filled with such grace good.gif

I think I get a better tax cut for filing single instead of married filing separately.. I am so confused. I thought you could file married filing jointly and still not have to do his income. hmm. thanks! I will read this again and see if I can get my confusion gone! He still lives in JA..does that change any of the answers?

Married filing separately works out to be the same in a refund as filing as single, from what I see. If I had amended my tax return to filing separately, I wouldn't have gotten anything back or owed the IRS anything.
When I spoke to the IRS agent, I specified the same thing that he was living in Jamaica for the entire time and it didn't change the answer they gave me.

You are perfectly right. I just looked around on the IRS website and I found it.
I am going to have to pay so many taxes that it is GROSS. I am only a teacher! Dont they know that!!

I know that the whole process is confusing, believe me. The only reason I amended my taxes is so he could get financial aid for school + going the extra step with declaring his income gave us a little extra back.

I'm applying for him an ITIN number and turning it all in at the same time. I'll file married cause its great tax relief

THats what I am going to do too I think..Else I might have to pay. DO you put any of his income on there anywhere?
Do you send for the ITTN first? or send the ITTN form with your filled out return?

Hey shrewdie, I just amended my 2006 tax returns to file as married using hubby's SSN. If you file your tax returns as "married filing separated" you will not need to declare his income. If you file as "married filing jointly" at this point you are stating that your hubby is allowing himself to be treated as a resident and it is at this point that you will need to declare his income earned worldwide. Going this route will allow you to take a tax credit for the taxes he has paid in Jamaica. You will need to fill out an additional form for his foreign income. I had also included a spreadsheet for how I worked out the USD equivalent of his income and taxes paid. His employer supplied us with a letter that stated his income earned in 2006 and 2007 and the taxes paid for both of these years. Much of this information I got from an IRS agent; here is the email answer that I got from them:
QUOTE
The Answer To Your Question Is:
Thank you for your inquiry regarding your 2006 tax return. We apologize for the delay.

You stated that your husband did not become a permanent resident until October 2007. In 2006 he was still a nonresident alien. Based on this information, a nonresident alien is not required to report foreign source income. However, since you are a United States, (U.S.) citizen, and if you choose to treat your spouse as a resident alien and file a joint return, your spouse's worldwide income must be included on your U.S. tax return. Please see Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad, for more information about filing a joint return.

If you choose to file as married filing separately, your nonresident alien spouse's foreign source income would not be reported on a U.S. tax return.

We hope this information is helpful. Thank you for using our service.

I will be doing the same thing for the 2007 taxes that we will be filing in a few weeks. Let me know if you need any additional information.

Hey...does anyone know or remember the exact location of where to get the police report in Kingston? helpsmilie.gif

Tonisha,
You are so on topic; here is the info you are looking for

QUOTE
Police Records
Available. Residents of Jamaica should apply for police certificates at the Ministry of National Security, 3 Oxford Rd., Kingston 5. They must present a passport, two passport-sized photographs, fee receipt, and evidence, such as a form letter of instructions to visa applicants, that the Embassy requires them to obtain police certificates for immigration purposes. There is both express, three-day service and a 21-day service.

After the application is processed, the applicant should take the receipt to 79 East Street in downtown Kingston, where the applicant is fingerprinted. At the end of the specified period, applicants should return to 79 East Street to collect the police certificate.

Jamaicans living abroad and former residents of Jamaica may also obtain police certificates, but will need someone in Jamaica to act on their behalf. The applicant should furnish the person applying for the record on their behalf with fingerprints, a certificate of character from a Notary Public or Lay Magistrate, two passport size photographs and a letter of consent authorizing application. These documents are to be taken to the Ministry of National Security at 3 Oxford Road, Kingston 5.

The issued certificate measures 8 x 6 inches with a heading of "Jamaican Constabulary." A photograph of the applicant is attached and an impression seal is placed on the photograph.

As everyone is talking about the enormity of the move from JA to the US. I remember that last day when Aaron was leaving JA, it positively broke my heart. He is very close with his family and when he moved here in October, it was the first he would be so far away from his parents. When the tears started to fall, I felt so guilty for taking him away from his parents, friends, family...all that he had known. I started second-guessing myself and wondered if this was the right move...started to wonder if I shouldn't have moved back home and stayed in our comfort-zone. Despite the guilt, I know it is a better option to be here, because he is able to go to school and take advantage of the opportunities that he is afforded here.
He has adjusted really well and though he still looking for a job, I still think it's a move in the right direction that he has started school. God's willing, the job is on the way. It is hard on the one income, but I know that God is able and He has not brought us this far to leave us.

But I ain't gonna lie....JAMAICA WAS BLOODCLAAT AMAZING!!!! Rebel Salute was WONDERFUL!!!! We had a great time!

My trip further solidified my decision to file for Ken. He was equally amazing! I just feel blessed to have him (as he does me wink.gif )

Rebel Salute was CRAZY!!! We got there at 10pm and left at 10am the following morning. Jah Cure was AMAZING...he sounded exactly like he did on his album. Capelton, Taurus Riley, and Busy Signal got the crowd screaming! Definitely want to go back again. We went to a restaurant called 'Little Ochie", near Santa Cruz in St. Elizabeth. I would definately recommend it and Rebel Salute to everyone!

Saying good-bye wasn't the usual water works on my end,..because I knew I would be headed back relatively soon! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

So, Ken dropped off his DS-230 today at the embassy. How long before I can start calling to find out about a date?

Again, I love you guys and really did miss you!

You beat me to it Tam. I was gonna say Pilates cause, yes it is low impact and most tapes have a "modified" person doing the moves for people with lower back problems. I have lower back probs too from multiple accidents. My last was the worst and I have a curve in my lower spine, but doing yoga really helps relieve that tension. I would try yoga for releasing your toxins and opening up your airflow, it also is a strength workout. You can get very flexible and not even realize it. There are crazy positions that my teacher gets in and I am like no way can i do that, but after awhile of doing yoga and then the teacher brings that move back after a couple of weeks and I slide right into it...its awesome!!!

You can rent DVD's from netflix or your local video place to see which ones you like.

I should try yoga...I am sure that hubby wouldn't mind the flexibility and the crazy positions devil.gif devil.gif

Yardie, Sonny - you ladies are my inspiration. I have decided to drink more water and it is my aim to eat healthier as well. Sonshine - congrats on your weight loss; that is fantastic! Yardie - way to go...you are on your way.

So, I`ve been driving up a storm, been out twice on my own....
My husband and I have been havng mega wars over me driving the truck - he thinks I should learn to drive the car `perfectly` first, my mother in law thinks I should be driving the truck to get used to it quicker...I`ve driven it twice and while t`s HUGE, I actually like driving it because it`s faster lol...He`s also banned me from driving with the baby in the car,but his mother and I boldly defy him...

Hey all! Hope you all are doing ok!

Good luck to all those wanting to lose weight and get healthy this year! I have the same resolution...lose weight/eat better and drink more water. I have been doing this for one week now and I have already lost 2.7 pounds...I haven't even started working out yet.

I heard that when you overwhelm yourself with too many resolutions you usually end up giving up on them all so I am starting out small and once I have the eating healthier/drinking water thing down I will move on to the working out/getting more active aspect.

All those classes sound soooooo fun!!! We don't really have anything good around here and what we do have is so far from me it is hard to get motivated to drive 30 mins to the gym each way. Takes up way to much time in the evenings. Not to mention the cost! My work doesn't have any incentive programs or anything like some of yours have. I know my budget won't allow for a gym membership at this time. Not sure what I am going to do...probably work out tapes at home to start with til the weather gets better and I can walk/jog outside.

Does anyone know of good workout tapes for people with bad lower backs? I have tried a couple tapes that ended up just killing my lower back (I was in an accident as a teen and have had probs since). Any suggestions?

Hey Yardie wife, welcome back. I would think Pilates would be good; Marlita correct me if I am wrong, but it's a low impact workout. You can check if your local library has any tapes that you can rent and start working out with. I have fallen in love with my library, because I can get so many things there. It is such a far cry from the Kingston Public Library on Tom Redcam Road...

Hubby is going to be at school tomorrow night and I am going to take advantage of the 8 weeks at Bally's that I got free through the Discovery National Body Challenge. Mi ah try lose at least 20 lbs by the time the membership up. I need some motivation. Plus mi have my monthly membership to Planet Fitness. At $10 a month it is not a bad deal.

I pray that everyone realizes their fitness goals this year!
