I had a pair of Coach heels he wore in Jamaica one Christmas. I think they were 3 or 4 inches though. He was hysterical just trying to walk in them.

unsure.gif Ummm... why was he wearing YOUR high heels?!!! whistling.gif

We were a little tipsy and he said something about it being easy to walk in heels. I said, then go for it.

Speaking of heels......so last night, after digging through my closet and his foot being too big and fat for any of my heels, we took off to Payless to buy him a pair. People were laughing and staring at this Jamaican guy in high heels running down the aisle. We settled on a pair of white strappy 3" wedge heels. At home, he spent most of the night running back and forth on the back porch. I was crying with laughter almost all night. I'm sure the neighbors think we are nuts.

***The Kingston Lawyer and The country Jamaican Policeman***

A lawyer runs a stop sign in Portland and gets pulled over by the
Police. He thinks that he is smarter than the police because he is a lawyer
from Kingston and is certain that he has a better education than any
Jamaican Police. He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at
the Police expense.
The Police says," Yuh License an yuh registration, please."
"What for?" says the lawyer.
The Police says, "Yuh didn't come to a complete stop at de stop sign."
Then the lawyer says, "I slowed down, and no one was coming."
"Yuh neva did come to a complete stop, Says the Police. License an
registration, please."
The lawyer says, "What's the difference?"
"De difference is dat yuh hav fe come to ah complete stop - dat's de law.
License an registration, please!" the Police says.
Lawyer says,"If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and
stop, I'll give you my license and registration; and you give me the ticket.
If not, you let me go and don't give me the ticket." That sounds fair.
Get yuh rass outa de vehicle, sar, the Police says.
At this point, the Police drape up de man, pull out his batton and starts
beating the ever-loving hell out of the lawyer and asks,
"Yuh waan me fe stop, ar just slow down?"

Thanks Marie and jamerican -- it is going to be an adjustment for him. According to him, Miramar is Kingston 21; he says it is like Jamaica only cleaner laughing.gif laughing.gif It is amazing having him here and it feels like a dream. I feel like I am dreaming and any moment I am going to wake up and he is not beside me. It is such a dream come true...I know it is not going to be an easy transition, but to have my best friend here with me is AMAZING.
The most disappointing aspect thus far is that he will have to wait 21 days to go to the Social Security office to get his SSN. Since all the changes, there has been some issues with issuing SSC because some applicants have been going into the SSA office and applying for the SSC while the Immigration agency is also issuing one for them; so people have been getting 2 SSNs. Honestly it concerns me that some disconnect is still happening between government agencies -- isn't this how 9/11 occurred? mad.gif
So apparently the whole Social Security BS is that if he doesn't have a SSC within 21 days, we should go back to the office and then they have to check the master list to see if his card is being processed; if he is not on the list, then they can start the process of getting his SSC...#######???!!!!! mad.gif Since graduating from HS, hubby has been working, so he doesn't know what it is like not making his own money; I know there is going to be a job on his horizon because his boss from his last job is trying to talk up some suppliers in Florida, to hook him up with something. So this is frustrating for him!

I didn't realize you were in Florida...YOU ARE SOOO LUCKY! The transition should be an easier one than most being that there are so many people from Jamaica there so he shouldn't be "Longing for" his culture. From what I understand it is the many laws and rules that people have the most difficulty dealing with here in the states. Have fun, don't pinch yourself too many times as you are not dreaming... good.gif Patience and persistance DOES PAY OFF!

Thanks jamerican. Any adjustment outside of Florida, we will do it together. Since moving to the US, I have never lived outside of Florida; so that I am okay with smile.gif. As we all talked about early on in this thread, I made sure and told hubby no peeing on the side of the road laughing.gif

Wow Ladies, you were on a roll this weekend.

Jamerican - I am happy that you finally have word on your honey, but you are going to have to handle that...
Luvtravlin - I am so sorry to hear about what you have going on with hubby and his family. I agree that you should have gotten an invitation and it is apparent to me, that Craig would know about the wedding way in advance of 2 weeks. Your fight is with him more than anyone else. I could not imagine Aaron doing that. If I am not invited, I know he is not going and vice versa (the only exception is girls night out)! I am happy that you had some peace, but I am sure this weighed on your mind more than anything.

CaribQueen - I know that they completed the interview scheduling today, were you in the bunch? Milan was successful and was scheduled for an interview date. I am certain that if you were not in this batch, December will be your turn. Keep us posted.

offtopic45vn.gif Gill, Kimmy, the rest of the VJ family - thank you all for all the love and support. Being on here helped me through the last stage of this harrowing process. This certainly made it more bearable. I have to tell you all this, the last 2 times I went home to Jamaica, Air Jamaica was delayed at least an hour. How about when I am going to get hubby, the flights were so on time, in fact coming back yesterday, by the time we got through immigration and into the waiting area, they were calling for our flight to board. It even landed early; I was so amazed. I guess the regular delay came into play at Immigation in Fort Lauderdale - we were there for about 2 hours wacko.gif (1 hour in the line trying to finally get to the immigration officer's desk and then another hour in the little room where the processing was complete). What a stress!!!!

So mr jengles told me that he didn't have to take a road test to get his license in JA. I was in disbelief (even though it would explain so much) . He said all he had to do was take a reading and vision test. So they want JA drivers to be able to read where they going and see where they going...but could care less if their able to stay on the road. He said most people get a "few lessons" AFTER they get their license if they know someone with a car...

Okay??!!! blink.gif ...I learned to drive in Jamaica and when I got my license (maybe it's different in the Corporate area than country), but I had to do the written test, reading, vision, yard and road test. Loved the yard test - hill start, parallel parking and reversing in a S. When I went for my license first (I was 17), they failed me because I didn't stay in my lane on a road that is as wide enough fi ongle 1 car pass (this was in Spanish Town). I couldn't even go to school I was crying so much. Rush home and call Daddy.
FYI - nuff people buy license a JA.

Can I ask what you all mean when you say you encourage him to go back to school and that kind of thing? I always take this kind of thing as women saying they feel the man wasn't schooled enough and for this reason I feel looked down upon. I read talk of ESL classes, college classes, GED's, all that kind of thing.

Now, I'm not saying it's bad talk nor is it a bad idea. I'm just wondering how your SO feels about additional schooling talk. Does he feel like you are saying you are smarter then him? Does he resent the topic?

Funniest thing is last night after praying, I asked Aaron if he felt pressured to go back to school. I am only encouraging him to get a degree as it opens his horizons for better paying jobs in South Florida. I support him all the way in whatever he wants to do and if he feels that a 4 year degree is not it for him and a certificate program will suffice, then that's fine with me. I just want him to be able to go out and get the job he wants.
That's my 2 cents.

Luvtravlin - sorry to hear all that you are going through with Craig. I had a very good friend who dated her husband for years and he didn't turn abusive until 2 months into their marriage. Thankfully, God made a way for her one night after he threw her against the wall, out of her marriage. He's American, she's Jamaican (got her GC through her parent). Their divorce was final 6 months after they got married and because he began stalking her, she had to get a restraining order against him. Thankfully, 2 years after it all he has stayed away and she is in a wonderful relationship. I wish you all the best and hope that you do not decide to keep away from the thread. rose.gif

Well, what about school? Is it taught in school?

Let me rephrase again............how many different ways have you seen Patois written? I mentioned some above. Are there more? You've got me curious now.

As far as credible, I'm not sure on that one. I do know I understand it so much better in the spoken form. Probably some learning defect in me that way.

As far as I know, it is NOT taught in school at all. What confuses me is there doesn't seem to be one certain way to spell things. That's why it's sometimes hard to read. Everyone spells it how they think it should be spelled. I gaurantee if I told Tony to write me a note in Patois, he wouldn't even know where to start. I think most Jamaican's know how to speak it, but not write/read it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

At this point it's not taught in schools in Jamaica, but there is a course that is taught in the UK on how to read, write and speak patois. The book that JG is referring to is "How to Speak Jamaican", which is a little booklet with commonly used phrases. You can pick it up in the bookstore in the airport in Kingston (I'm pretty sure they will have it at Sangsters).

I started the post saying it was a purely fictional story and my first attempt at writing a story. She comes in shortly after talking about it was believable until I got to the nice customs agent. There was no patois in the story at that point. I shrugged the comment off, although I got several PMs about why she was being rude. Again, she and everyone else is entitled to their opinion. Mi nuh beg nuh friend.

There are enough people reading and posting in the thread that are not with JAMAICANS, and they are even mouthing the words to follow the story. If you don't like it, no problem. Feel free to stay away like you have thus far. good.gif The post will die a slow death and fizzle out in due time anyway.

What I don't get is some of the women claiming to be in love with their Jamaican husbands, but they hate his family, his friends, his mother, his country and everything that made him the man he is now. I have remained quiet about it...but some of oonu oomen nuh knoa yuhself! Yuh need fe tek wey yuhself and nuh place all de blame pon im when de marriage nuh work.

Jomo nuh de ONGLY RUDE GYAL PON DIS BC WEBSITE! Mi nuh stawt war...but mi nuh run frum ie eidda. De best ting fe mi fe do ie tuh low dis before mi sey someting fe ban mi.

I think I will start a PATOIS ONLY thread too. Feel free to stay out of that one too...yuhseemi? devil.gif yes.gif laughing.gif wink.gif

laughing.gif laughing.gif laughing.gif Jawi, yu too bad! Some of the derogatory comments on here about Jamaica and Jamaicans have gotten to me as well. If you know people who are like that, please keep it to them, but some of the generalizations have been too much, especially considering that they have fallen in love with and married Jamaicans. I am proud of my country, despite its issues, but as the colours of our flag represent: Hardships there are (black), but the land is green and the sun shines; we will continue to prosper despite all that ah gwaan.

Question: Do any of you buy saltfish in your area? I found saltfish online for 3.99/lb boneless and skinless good.gif Problem is the shipping is MORE than the fish itself! We can't find any in our area...if you have it in your area...what is the cost? Is 3.99 a good deal and should I just suck it up on the shipping?

We have it here in the Farmer's Market for about that price, no shipping cost. Have you tried the Farmer's Market in your area? You should also check local meat/fish markets to see if they can get it for you. I can't find ackee to go with my saltfish. I can't find fresh calaloo either. crying.gif crying.gif

Hope you find a great deal though. good.gif

Hello VJ family.

I tried calling our local Caribbean market but they wouldn't give me a quote over the phone. And I'm not sure when we're going back to the market.

Jawi - can you get canned ackee in ATL? We have it here for $11 a can. We saw fresh calaloo last week but Damien didn't buy any headbonk.gif

Tell Damien that is the same can ackee he is getting at the restaurant yes.gif yes.gif . Last year, my mom was planting callaloo in the back yard, so most Sundays we would have fresh callaloo for breakfast. She also planted sorrel, so that was the Christmas sorrel drink; that was so nice. Has anyone had the sorrel tea? It is so good. They came out with scientific proof that apparently it is good for you.

Hi everyone!

I'm back from Jamaica. I miss my family and my SO crying.gif

There were so many people at the funeral and it was even broad casted on CVM. I did one of the readings and seeing myself on tv was weird. Although I feel better, I'll feel even more content when the police my uncle's killer.

I've been gone almost a week and it wasn't difficult for me to catch up. I thought I would have a billion pages to read.

Anyways, I'm going to catch up on Jawi's story kicking.gif

Welcome back Marie. Though I know you didn't go home under the most ideal situations, I am sure you loved seeing your family and SO. I pray that your uncle's killer will be apprehended soon!

Oh I didn't even think of that!!! ohmy.gif Well, that could be the reason for the bad connections huh??? I just summed it up as Kevin and his ongoing phone issues...... Guess I am not one to give the "benefit of the doubt" out too readily tongue_ss.gif I sure hope the rain slows up,,,,, I would like a little bit of color when I come back.

Jamerican - Have a safe trip to JA this week.

Shrewdgal - we spoke to my in-laws tonight and the connection was pretty good. I hope the rain lets up soon as my father-in-law said that every morning they wake up wondering if school will be in session and the like. I hope you have better connections soon.

What is the hope credit?

It is for education tax credits: http://www.irs.gov/t...pics/tc605.html. If you or your hubby are in school, keep your tuition receipt so that you can use it to claim either the hope or lifetime credit.

I think you are only able to file hope credit for 2 years. I hope its more than 2 because thats a nice increase in my tax return.

You should be able to file for the Lifetime Learning Credit. As long as you are in school it will be good.

Hey Jammy,

Kevin has to get it from the JP or deh same place him get his birth certificate from in his area...it states that he has never been married before and if he was married before he is now free to marry. It cost b/t $90-200 U.S. from what I have been told!

Blessed Gill

yes.gif you should try to get on that ASAP!!!! i know some people haven't been asked for it and have gotten approved but it is awlays better to be over prepared just incase...

Hey guys!
I just wanted to add (but I am thinking most of you probably already know this) for those of you doing the K-3 or CR-1 that you can get your husband added to your car insurance as a non-driver for more documentation and the rate shouldnt go up (if anything go down b/c now you are married!).

I also have a question. How are you going to file your taxes at the end of this year as far as filing status. I would think married filing separately but like the additional income would be zero..right?

smile.gif

You can ask Melwin (Jax) this info although he just got here this summer? I don't think any of CR1's or K3 men have been here long enough to know much about the tax info. If you do it through a K3 or CR1 there are more steps to follow. I also think that nyseness (Anna) knows this info too. You can try PMing one of them.

If it's a k1, we filed jointly....because he was here last year. We'll be obviously doing the same thing next year.

Hope that helps....

If he is not here yet you need to fill out the ITTIN form. You will need his passport up here with you. You will need to make a copy of it and get it notarized and send it in. If you know a notary in your state then all you need is a copy of the passport. I knew a notary so all I made is a copy. Or if he is coming up here sometime next year you can also file an extension on your taxes and wait until he gets here. I had to file an extension cause I found out about getting my ITTIN to late. But it is well worth the extra cash. whistling.gif

Jax, I know you're hubby is in school, so I am not sure what the threshhold is, if there is a minimum tuition that needs to be met, but you can file the Hope Credit for even more. I have filed for the Hope Credit for the past 2 years with school and I will be filing it for my 2007 tax returns.

Well I have decided to end my journey before it even fully began. I have been focusing my attention on a few red flags and decided after much thought and prayer to end my relationship. I want to thank each and every one of you for the advice that I was given. This thread and every thing I have learned from it was truely a blessing. It opened my eyes and and I am very thankful for it. There are alot of strong and beautiful woman here! And even though I am ending my journey you aren't going to get rid of me that easy, lol. I enjoy talking to you guys and reading Jawi's fabulous story! I still have a huge love for Jamaica and its people. And just because "D" wasn't right for me doesn't mean every man in Jamaica is the same. The tears have been shed and now I am at peace with my decision. So onto a new chapter in my life.

Classychic, I am so sorry to hear. I am happy that you have come to this realization before going through this grueling process and later realizing that he is not the one for you. Much love and blessings to you and we look forward to having you on here for a long time to come. heart.gif rose.gif

I'm a bit new to the site and after lurking around for a while, this thread seems like the best of all. I'm currently dating a guy that lives in Jamaica and will be filing really soon. I may have some questions since the process is new to me, so I hope I can get some good advice from some of you.
