Question for you girls this morning...............Has anyone mailed over the counter meds to anyone in Jamaica?

Yes, Jomo. I mailed 3 packs of Tums to my Godfather in Mo Bay about 6 months about. With some Tylenol Extra Strength.

The USPS asked me what it was and I told them. They labeled it and my Godfather got it in 10 days or so.

Thank you. A friend of mine asked this question to me this morning. I had a horrible experience with someone shipping my prescription meds to me while I was in JA. But, had no advice on OTC meds.

US embassy to make up for 'Dean' date
published: Thursday | September 13, 2007

The United States Embassy in Kingston is advising that this Saturday, September 15, is the make-up date for all non-immigrant visa applicants who had their appointments for Monday, August 20, cancelled following the passage of Hurricane Dean. In addition, the Consular Section will not be able to offer visa interviews on Wednesday, October 3. Applicants who have appointments scheduled for October 3 are also being asked to appear instead on Saturday, September 15.

According to a statement from the embassy, while some applicants have gone ahead and rescheduled their August appointments, those who have not are being asked to arrive on Saturday at their previously scheduled time, or not more than 15 minutes before their appointment. The same applies for those holding appointments for October 3.

Applicants who cannot be present on September 15 are being asked to schedule their appointment for another date and time through the embassy's website at http://kingston.usembassy.gov.

Yeah I saw this yesterday on the Embassy site. I thought that maybe since it mostly affected NIV that it may not have been of interest. blush.gif

offtopic45vn.gif Ladies - Are your husbands going to apply for citizenship when the 3 yrs is up? Can you have DUAL citizenship - both Jamaican and U.S.? Tony said he doesn't want to give up his JA one, but he would like to have dual. Does anyone know?

My husband insists that he doesn't want to file for citizenship, but I am going to talk him into it. Both his parents are up in age and I want us to file for them so that when 1 partner inevitably dies, the other one can come and move with us. We're going to be taking care of them anyway, by taking care of their bills, so at that point I would want to do away with taking care of 2 households. If for no other reason, I want him to do it for that.

Andre plans to apply.

Yes, Ken intends to also...because I need him to VOTE!!! He didn't vote in the recent JA. elections and I totally understood because the Jamaican climate for democracy can be a little tremulous, to say the least.

But, here is a different story and they (Congress & President) could be making decisions that directly effect him. I remember at one time there was talk about not letting LEGAL immigrants collect Social Security after they had paid into it! That killed me because if the Legal immigrants did not become citizens, they had no way for their voice to be heard!

That stuff scares me and he should have a voice! Plus, I intend to become an official JA. citizen after reading the prior post about dual citizenship!! yes.gif

How about you guys? Jamaican Citizenship anyone?

Not only to vote; but to protect himself. I forget where I read it now; but there were additional legal rights to being a citizen as opposed to not being on. I want him to be protected in case I would not be around to watch out for him.

Yes, I had previously looked into Jamaican Citizenship for myself. I will consider it in the future. Right now, it's not high on my priority list though. I've had about as much paperwork and dealings with government offices as I can take at the moment.

I hear you on that. Going the K-1 route really has you in the immigration system for a while, so I can understand your hesitancy in filling out anything more yes.gif
I do remember hearing about some rights afforded to citizens that are not afforded to LPR. Plus, having citizenship gives you such an opportunity to affect change where you live. Plus God forbid you get caught up in something and get arrested your residency can be in jeopardy.

You know the anxiety of seeing something out there. From the 2 scenarios for the depression, JA seems to be in the clear, but those steering currents can push it on a different course. I am staying focused!

This is sooooo true. My friends husband checked all his clothes, shoes, and suitcases after he left his house on the way to the airport because he was afraid someone had "planted" something illegal in his luggage! ohmy.gif He said some people there get so jealous they will do anything to ruin it for you.

I am always paranoid now that I can't put a lock on my bag. Back in the day there were horror stories that baggage handlers who had drug links may put drugs in your bag after they were checked in. Never really heard of anyone who it happened to, but I don't pack anything in my bags to take up for anybody, unless it's my father. I don't trust people like that. They will do things like that to you. My step-sister, though she was caught up in the game, was given "rum" to take up with her. Turns out it was liquified cocaine. Got jail time in NY and then was deported back to JA.

One thing though. I was talking to my baby last night, and he was telling me about a time when him and his friends went to the river to hang out for the day. One of them made cornmeal porridge while they were swimming, and laced it with ganja. They couldn't figure out why they all started having fits of laughter until the "friend" (and I use the term loosely) admitted what he had done. My baby hasn't smoked in years...but just imagine if we were going for the medical the next day? All he was doing was enjoying a day with his bredrin. I told him about Empress' story too, and he was PISSED. He wanted to know why he was so careless. He also thought it may have been intentional if he got scared. He said he may have been looking for more time...and just didn't realize it would be a 3 year ban. It seems many of them are clueless to the process. I wish that those that were declined visas would share the real with their friends...but they can be so tight lipped about personal matters.

This is so true. My fiance did not tell anyone that he was looking about papers and all now he still hasn't told his mother that he got tru. He just told his father the day that we were approved that he was going to be leaving for awhile. I was like why are you keeping it a secret and he was like people mouth poison and there are too many bad mind people out there. I was like yeah but geesh not one person the whole 6 months? I had to respect him though because he is absolutely correct. People just don't want to see you get ahead in life (well some of them anyway). He said that he will not tell his mother until a few days before he leaves (he isn't that close to her as you can see). Yeah, but some people are just envious and hate to see others prosper. They will do anything to keep the next man behind.

That is so true. Ken told me a few days ago, he started putting things aside that he would like to bring with him and I said "NOW!!???" He was like "Gill, when I get deh visa, I'm leaving here like a thief in the night!!" Mi nuh waan give nuhbaddy a chance fi mess wid deh runnings. Nuf badmind peeple yah suh! Well, until you have a child that goes through the system here..... you'll probably agree with what she said. My son has ADD (now called ADHD), but he's very very borderline. Middle school (6th through 8th grades) THE WORSE ever !!! They literally pushed him through!! I had him evaluated extensely in the beginning of this year because he was doing so poorly in school, just was struggling unbelievably (mostly because the teachers don't give a rats you know what!!). I would help him study for hours and he *knew* the material and would get into the class and totally fail.....so the pychologist tells me he has a learning disability i.e. NO long term retention. The reason being, is that from Kindergarten through 5th grade schools/teachers nowadays (well for the past 6-7 yrs) that they are taught for "short term tasks"....meaning they are NOT required to "memorize" anything before they go onto the next subject. For instance multiplication ....you do NOT "memorize" anymore. They go through the entire work in a week and if you don't know it....oh well, move on. So, when he got into 6th grade, everything he "learned" up till them....he had no memory of and basically was failing every class --that's when I had him evaluated for Attention Deficit. Then 7th grade, is a review of 6th grade...he got all A's & B's and then there was 8th grade...........shoot was THE worse because they are preparing you for high school and the "memory" of everything up to that point. My son STILL does not know (or remember) his "x" tables. He has a hard time "remembering" the flippin months of the year (in order). He used to remember the trips (and details) that we've been on..... not anymore. There is no long term memory !!

His last report card for middle school (the one that comes home in the mail -this summer) ...he got 3 D's (and one was an E, but she moved it up a point to make it a D), 3 C's and one B (in PE) and they passed him....no questions asked......nothing!!!! In our county you are not "allowed" to be passed to the 9th grade if you have any D's (or lower). I was in his middle soooo much the flippin janitors all know me. I met with his teachers on numerous occassions. It was ridiculous !!

SO, there was no way that I wanted him to go into high school ...continuing this way. I met with the Special Ed teacher over the summer and she "assured" me that Austin would have a very smooth transition. When I went to orientation the Friday before school started..."I" was soooooo darn excited to see that they DID do everything for him to make it less stressful, complicated and whatever else you wanna call it. His 1st period class has only 5 kids in it and it's called a "Tutorial", basically a refresher class and the teacher helps with ANY assignments they need help with, or questions with homework for any class. Second period, he has the Varsity soccer coach and he doesn't play....but doesn't give homework. Third period....health. Fourth/5th period Math -- double dose and 2 teachers and only 15 kids. Sixth period-English --only 11 kids and 2 teachers and then he's in Spanish Honors with only 16 kids (since he passed Spanish the past 2 yrs).

He LOVES high school, LOVES all of his teachers (so far). It has been a total nightmare up to this point! Now there's another huge incentive, he canNOT get anything lower than a C (or maintain a 2.0 or higher) grade average to play sports!!! That could also be keeping him very motivated!!!

Sorry for the long post ............but, you just wait. I can only imagine what the school system (especially public school) is going to be like in 4-5 yrs !!!!!

I can only hope that the educational system will improve in the US. Both my sisters are middle school teachers - math and science. When my sister (the math teacher) told me that the administration "encouraged" her to pass a failing student so that he can move on to the high school. When asked why she should send this student unprepared on to high school, the response was, he can't drop out in middle school, but he can do that in high school. That floored me! mad.gif

Yu see mi...I have no qualms to let them know that foreign not easy. My husband knows how hard I had to work before I finally finished my Bachelor's and even now. I make sure that our family know that if life was a little easier in Jamaica, I would totally come back home, because the QUALITY of life is much better!

I'm curious as to why you think this? Is it the slower pace of things? The friendly people? How do you define "quality of life"? I see how many of Tony's family and friends live down in JA and I could never live that way. I'm just curious.

The income disparity in Jamaica is quite apparent and I would have to say that I may be biased in that I had a privileged up-bringing. What I am alluding to, is the family time; the time for relaxation, not being swept up in the rat race as it is here. The sense of community that you will find in Jamaica, that seems to be lacking in many US cities. If you know your neighbour having it hard, you know when you go country and you get food products from your family in the country, you come and share it with your neighbour.
Over the past decade, Jamaica's economy has been on a steady decline and I can only hope that the new government may be able to turn things around. I can tell you, as more opportunities are available in Jamaica, much of the "diaspora" will return to the island, because the way of life is much better than it is here.

You are no longer worth the effort or my VALUABLE time to sit down and respond to your obilivious statements.

You've GOT to be kidding me!!!!

This forum was started for US to have a place to help each other -- not BASH each other every chance we get.

What is wrong with someone having an opinion? That's just fine if you don't agree with it but do we have to get so nasty?

I have been around (and been a party to) plenty of prejudice in my life. It is what it is. Yeah, it's a shame that in this day and age things like this still go on -- I am sorry for that. I really am. But I don't go around making it worse. Whatever......

Ya know Mindy.....I TOTALLY miss the good ole days when we used to laugh, joke, support, be caring, etc etc and not have ANY of this BS drama on here !!!!! Where the heck are all of our "veterans"????!!!

Oh LORD!!! Get over the veterans already!!!! It sounds quite insulting to those who are "newbies" on here! Like they are unwanted or something. I have seen you make this comment many times before, even when I was a newbie and all it made me do is not like the veterans. so that comment really gets the thread no where. Its gonna become a battle of the newbie verse the vet in a minute and of course the newbie will win, cause there are WAY more of them. The thread is what it is! It evolves just like everyting else in life! It has its ups and downs.

The problem on here is what I see on many other forums that have to do with Jamaica and the Americans who love it. People have a high-octane opinion, mixed with their love for a country but really have never walked a mile in the shoes of the people from the country. I think people who are not Black don't understand when things SEEM to always have a "racial" issue behind them because they only see the surface. They only see what the media presents to them.

I gotta say, there's a WHOLE underground, unspoken world that Black people from ALL OVER THE WORLD share. Only WE share it so other races and cultures don't get it. Blacks meet from the US, UK, Africa, Caribbean, and they all have someting in common. The way they have been treated throughout the history of this world. They all have heard horrible tear causing stories from their granparents, and even their own children. The all know whats its like to be a ethnic minority, even when they live in a country or continent where they are the majority. When we don't live in areas where there are many of us we gravitate to one another, giving each other an unspoken look, or head nod just to show, we acknowledge each others Blackness. When we are around each other we embrace our Blackness and our culture much more than we do when we are around others. WE wear our hair differently, we dress differently, we talk about differnet things. We have converstaions and speech patterns we would never share with other races no matter how down we think they are. When we do it fuels debates like the one on here cause others just don't understand.

I know this may be new for many to understand, even if you've been around Black people for years, dated Black men, had Black friends, listen to reggae, rap, soul and R&B. There are just somethings that you will never get. Either you can't physically experience them, like having someone call you a N----, have people tell you to cover your nappy hair, spit at you cause your Black, through hateful slurs at you, say your pretty for a Black girl, ask if you wash your hair, sit in an office of all whites, sit in a school of all whites, sit on a bus, at a movie, in the mall......its a different world from our eyes. Then there's just the stuff we as Black folks talk about in the privacy of or Black neighborhoods, some of that stuff will never come out to the public til the day we all die!!!!

SO when issues like JENA 6 come out well you're just getting a bit of a taste of what we talk about and how we talk on the DL.

Marlita, thank you for all you said; I am in total agreement. In reference to your comment on the vets vs. newbies, it has barely been 4 months since I have been on this thread and there were many times that it was very unwelcoming. I met some really great ladies on here and I will treasure the times, but there are others that because they are "vets"...let me not go there.
It has certainly been very heated on here today whistling.gif

Oh, that's wonderful news.

I know it's hard on you, knowing now how it all played out. But, I am a firm believer in keeping your word and integrity. Sometimes it is all you have. Andre was honest and played it smart when leaving his job. Because of it, his manager wrote a wonderful letter of recommendation and has fielded a few calls from prospective employers for Andre. Her glowing recommendations made me very proud of him. So, I think you s/o is doing the right thing and I respect him for it.

Thanks Kelly. I am not pressing him on it because I am hoping for her to write him a good letter of recommendation as well. The good thing is that some of the suppliers for his company are in our area, so I am hoping that a good recommendation will land him a job at one of those companies, while he attends school.

In 2005, my sister found out she had fibroids and her doctor told her if she wanted to get pregnant, she should do it ASAP. She heard that in September and by October she was pregnant with my niece. She is pregnant again (Friday she reached her 12 week mark); on Monday she had a scare. On Sunday when I stepped off the plane, I had a text message from her saying that she had a dream the night before that she lost the baby. Monday morning she was calling me in tears because she was bleeding. I am wondering if the fibroids may have been the issue and the baby wasn't really in danger. She left them as is in the womb. Hopefully we will hear more experiences from the fam... unsure.gif

Now, on to my crazy husband...........We spent yesterday together shopping, a movie, dinner. So, we go into this gigantic sporting goods store called Cabela's. As we are checking out, Andre says "when we are ready to buy a house, I want one with a big fire place and I want to put one of those above it." He points to these huge deer, boar, and bear heads mounted all over the walls. I'm like are you crazy???????? I am not having some beedy eyed dead animal staring at me all the time. No freakin' way! He says, "I've always wanted one of those". I'm like "you didnt' even have heat in Jamaican, let alone a fire place. How could you want one of those?????"

Geeeezzzzzzz....I swear, some of the things he comes up with sometimes.

LMAO ur right may wake up in middle of night and swear its alive!! hehe what if the eye moves id flee the house quickly lol im scary
