I'm the same way. When I was younger it was more fluent but now it comes and go depending on who I'm talking to. Many of Javon friends think I was born down there so they always tell me that can't understand the twang. They need me to talk right....I say I am and them just laugh. Then of course it all comes out. laughing.gif

I think what turns me off is, when people pick up that I am not from the States and I tell them I'm Jamaican, the response is "But you don't sound Jamaican". I'm like, what does a Jamaican sound like, since our motto is "Out of Many, One People", we don't all sound alike.

Well color me pink! You're Jamaican?!!! Wow! You people sure know how to party huh? I love how you talk. Talk Jamaican for me and my friends. Awww..now...just a little?! No?? Not today? Okay then. Irie! Yeah Mon! Respect! Natural Mystic! I love Bob Marley! wwoooooooo-hoooooooo!!!!

You are too cute Rhonda. You got the translation perfect. Patois is not taught in Jamaican schools, and I have heard that the teacher frowns upon the use during learning activities. Of course, I didn't go to school in Jamaica so I can only go by what I have been told by Jamaicans in Jamaica. There is no right or wrong way to spell in patwah which is why a lot of Jamaicans will say they have trouble reading it, and it gives them a headache.

I have become acclimated with reading it and typing from another website. I have been a member for seven years. I can understand it spoken very well, and Jamaicans are only convinced when they hear me respond without saying "huh? What? Repeat it again? Say it slower". I just don't trust myself to speak it, and I am extremely shy in my small attempts to speak it because I don't want to be laughed at. Jamaicans already laugh at me because I have a Southern drawl...LOL...imagine me adding that and the Jamaican lilt. Would not be good in my opinion. LOL laughing.gif

When I first started understanding it verbally, it began from me recognizing words that I had seen written and sounded out.

I had the same experience you had with the guys talking about women and sex in patois. However, one guy was talking to my sweetie about me. It wasn't mean...but it was rude about what he would like to do with me. I was flirting with my sweetie and licked his ice cream cone, oblivious to the fact that this guy was watching.

My sweetie knew that I was going to defend myself...so he didn't say a word and just looked at me with a evil grin on his face. Then, when I went off and told the guy that he needs to ask his mother how he should conduct himself around a real woman and some other things I can't repeat here, my sweetie burst out laughing LOUDLY. He said he knew it was coming and he wanted to see the guy's reaction. Well, the guy was trying to apologize and so forth, and we all laughed about it and how shocked he looked when I responded.

Feel free to PM me if you want to practice with me. I don't mind. You can practice writing it by responding to me in patois, and I will tell you if it's not right or just a little off.

Gwaan tru, Jawi laughing.gif !!! I think it's a shame that in our schools we frown on the native dialect. But I think, just like the weed, the upper echelons of our society are beginning to embrace it more and learning to appreciate the culture for all that it is and has to offer.

Thanks JG and TAM. At this point I am just thinking to go with the easier route. I will be finished my master's next year and by then hopefully he will have a job and both incomes will be considered for the purchase of a home. I know that I don't want to stay in Philadelphia so that is another plus for renting and I should get another position with a greater education next year. I think I am going to rent. I am still relatively young. I just have to stop letting the family run my life because I am the youngest. My family sees me as this EXTREMELY successful person and that expectation is really hard to live up to. I love what I am doing at work and school but sometimes I think that they are constantly trying to catch me before I fall, particularly my mother. Its no fun and Melvin is so worried about me. He is in my corner 105 percent. He would just really love to come up and be a great contribution and to prove everyone wrong. I am constantly reminding him that we are not living our lives to prove anything to anyone but each other. To he\ with everyone else!!!

Sorry guys...Just ranting right now and currently you all are the only ones that know of my situation and can relate therefore, I consider you as my outlet.

Thanks again and keep me in your prayers.

Shonnie - you both don't have to prove anything to anyone. Your life together will be proof enough. I wish you the best in your masters program.
I also want to move out of Florida and that is another reason I am holding off on buying a house.

Thanks everyone for the congrats....The real issue is that I have to find a place for us to live and I am stuck. I would like to buy a house but I don't want to rush into purchasing a house. I really don't want to get an apt because that is just like throwing money away. Of course Melvin is putting pressure on me to come up but I keep telling him that I'm working on it. He is thinking that I could get an apt and then we both work on finding a house when he comes up. Realisticly, I know that it will take awhile for us to get settled and for him to start working. I don't know. Last night I cried on the phone with him. I am so stressed out because none of my family likes the idea of him coming up and me moving with him but no one wants to say it. All I keep getting is little comments like "are you sure you are ready to move in with someone because you know people change blah blah blah. I think I would feel so much better if they weren't sending me hidden messages and would just come straight with the real. Again they don't know that he will be here on a K-1 visa. So, I don't know----just confused because I love my fiance and at this point he comes first. I did tell him that he will have to wait awhile to come up because of the living situation but of course he wants to spend christmas with me and the new years which I don't blame him for. I want to spend it with him as well and hopefully he will be here by then.

Hey Shonnie,
I know that your a joyful in knowing that the worst has passed. Though you are not adding to the equity of a home while renting, you will at least alleviate the anxiety that you could have paid a better price for a home when the market finally gets to the bottom. Because I also want hubby to have a say in where we live, I am waiting for him to get here to make any decisions on that. I also understand, "to see him and to live with him are 2 different things". The integration won't be easy, but you know that you love him and want to make it work.
Remember that this is your life, your decision to make. Your family loves you and want the best for you, but in the end you know what's best. Your own instincts will kick in; trust them when they do.
I wish you the best and I will be praying for you. yes.gif

You know that live with part is a load of kaka. You would have the same issue even if he was from the same city as you. Living with someone is always stressful, no matter what the circumstances. Don't pay them no mind.

No lie...moving in with just a roommate, is stressful.

Shonnie - your family knows you plan on marrying Melvin soon, right?

offtopic45vn.gif Ok, I'm just wondering, is there a specific way to spell out words in Patois? Or do you just try to spell them how they sound? Do you learn Patois in school or just English? I can read and understand (almost) everything you write just by sounding it out. But if me try to write it meself, it would be a disaster laughing.gif

Oh, and why do you call it "rooks"? I don't get it unsure.gif I keep forgetting to ask Tony bout it.

My dear, spell it the way it sounds. They have a little booklet on "How to speak Jamaican". Also, I heard in the UK they are offering a formal class in Patois as a second language.

Can I tell you, a few months ago I was thinking about moving home and looking to find a job at UWI. One almost every job description it said "Must be able to speak fluent english and Patois!!! blink.gif I was shocked!! Because in educational institutions Patois has always been strongly discouraged! Plus typically Patois is classified as a dialect not a language...so for UWI to place it in the catagory of a languauge was also surprising!

REALLY!! I remember when the use of Patois was strictly discouraged! As we can see times are changing everywhere, I am really shocked.

My dear, when I got home last night, there was barely any news on TD#8 - now Ms Hingrid. All that was on was the manhunt for that guy who killed a Miami-Dade police officer and injured 3 more. The worst of the injury was a Yardie girl and we're thankful to report that she is doing well. The bullet shattered the bones in her knee and apparently there was fear that she could have lost her leg. Thank God, she is on her way to recuperating.

I hear you man, I hear you! But trust me, sitting on this side of the fence ain't any sweeter. Just more hurry up and rasclaat wait! I feel as if I'm in one huge waiting room and the *** nurse is never gonna call my name!

How did I do? Not sure what rahtid means, but assuming it's a form of cuss word! Unless you mean rotten? Hey, maybe I can work for JA Embassy as a Patois translator!!! laughing.gif Seriously, except for one or two words, I understand everything you guys write in Patois. I wish I could understand and speak it better in person!

You go girl, I would hire you as a translator any day.

laughing.gif laughing.gif Ok now this was mean, but when I was younger, a friend here in Miami asked me what the cuss words meant; I told her one was good morning, good afternoon, good evening and good night. I cleared it up before she went up to my mother and said "B**** claat, Ms. Rose". laughing.gif

offtopic45vn.gif Ok, I'm just wondering, is there a specific way to spell out words in Patois? Or do you just try to spell them how they sound? Do you learn Patois in school or just English? I can read and understand (almost) everything you write just by sounding it out. But if me try to write it meself, it would be a disaster laughing.gif

Oh, and why do you call it "rooks"? I don't get it unsure.gif I keep forgetting to ask Tony bout it.

My dear, spell it the way it sounds. They have a little booklet on "How to speak Jamaican". Also, I heard in the UK they are offering a formal class in Patois as a second language.

Actually the Embassy could make a LOT of money if they offered this service yes.gif I would pay $100 to get it that same day. When Tony had his interview (almost 3 yrs ago now) there was no Airpak to deliver it. We had to drive all the way back to Kingston again to get it. I would definately pay more money just for the conveniance.

They totally would. I remember when I went through the process, you did the interview in the morning and picked up the passport in the afternoon.

We went to windo 12A dropped of papers tax return, no Impediment, Ds230 Part II, Ds156, Ds 156k, DS157, I 134 with job letter and pay stubbs along with bank statements. My income was a little below for 2006 I was able to use savings and 401k to supplement income. We were then call to windo 16A for finger prints. Was told to wait for name to be called. About 8:35 was called to Windo #22A. We handed in the bank statement since they were not asked for at the first window. Was told to go sit far away while they interview my fiance'. He was asked where we met, the name and age of my kids, How often we talk on the phone, How often I visited, We filed for me to go to America and Why was I divorced from my first husband. My fiance' stumbled on the divorce details and I was called to window #22A to be interviewed alone. Was asked the same questions but Officer was concern that we did not discussed my previous divorce in details. I have been divorced for over 14 years and had several relationships after so did not know that I should tell my fiance' all the dirty details. My fiance' told me that his heart was racing like a car engine. He was called back to window and was asked to give in his passport. She then stated fill out pink paper and we were told to go to airpak accross the street We hugged and kissed and was walking on cloud nine. Wedding date is planned for October 17, 2007. My ex would only speak in proper English when I first met him and he was still in Jamaica, no matter how much I begged him not to. I wanted to learn patwah in the worst way, and I wanted him to teach me. Well poop on me because as soon as he touched US soil nothing but pure patois in the last 5 years. He said that he didn't want to loose it and start twanging. My sister to this day cannot figure out what he is saying to her. Him and my brother would sit and talk for hours on end...just for my brother to whisper in my ear later that he didn't have a clue what he was saying yeah too. LOL

I will only speak proper English when I am around those I know won't understand. Many push and prod, but to me it makes no sense to do it for their entertainment. Now around Jamaicans and other Caribbean nationals, I let it fly....But if they tick me off, they'll get all the entertainment they can stand

It was not entertainment for me...I just really wanted to learn and understand. I feel so at home in Jamaica...but I was clueless because I couldn't understand it at all. Then, one day I was walking through Ochi, and it was like my ears popped. I was turning in all directions...hearing and understanding all conversations. I know people wondered why the strange tourist girl was staring and smiling and nodding like a new born fool. I understand it pretty well now...but I am not brave enough to actually test my own ability to speak it (unless of course I get upset...then it will come tumbling out in bits of regular English...Ebonics and patois) LOL kikikikiki

I've never wanted a Jamaican to entertain me...and I don't buy into the whole it's so sexy (unless of course it is Beenie Man, Capleton or Vybz Kartel). Vybz could lyrics me anytime anytime...with his lizard looking self. Love him the same way still. biggrin.gif

The funniest thing is, I can't speak to someone who I know won't understand it in the dialect unless I'm cussin them out. It just won't come out, just feels so forced. I don't know why blush.gif

I understand the reasoning truthfully. It's hard to converse with someone that is nodding in acknowledgement and responding correctly to you but they are using correct English. I had to learn how to understand rather quickly when my ex got here like I said earlier. So, I had a very good understanding by the time I met my sweetie. We have known each other for 3 years now...and for the first year and half...nothing but proper English. He said that it was natural instinct from schooling. When the teacher addressed you in school with proper English you better not respond in patois! I also don't think he was quite convinced until he heard me sing along to an entire Vbyz Kartel song. Oh and after our first and only HUGE argument.

You probably scared him when you gave him a sound cussing in patois laughing.gif laughing.gif

Question for you girls this morning...............Has anyone mailed over the counter meds to anyone in Jamaica?

Yes, Jomo. I mailed 3 packs of Tums to my Godfather in Mo Bay about 6 months about. With some Tylenol Extra Strength.

The USPS asked me what it was and I told them. They labeled it and my Godfather got it in 10 days or so.

Thank you. A friend of mine asked this question to me this morning. I had a horrible experience with someone shipping my prescription meds to me while I was in JA. But, had no advice on OTC meds.

US embassy to make up for 'Dean' date
published: Thursday | September 13, 2007

The United States Embassy in Kingston is advising that this Saturday, September 15, is the make-up date for all non-immigrant visa applicants who had their appointments for Monday, August 20, cancelled following the passage of Hurricane Dean. In addition, the Consular Section will not be able to offer visa interviews on Wednesday, October 3. Applicants who have appointments scheduled for October 3 are also being asked to appear instead on Saturday, September 15.

According to a statement from the embassy, while some applicants have gone ahead and rescheduled their August appointments, those who have not are being asked to arrive on Saturday at their previously scheduled time, or not more than 15 minutes before their appointment. The same applies for those holding appointments for October 3.

Applicants who cannot be present on September 15 are being asked to schedule their appointment for another date and time through the embassy's website at http://kingston.usembassy.gov.

Yeah I saw this yesterday on the Embassy site. I thought that maybe since it mostly affected NIV that it may not have been of interest. blush.gif
