i just need to stop watching the weather channel.......but i just cant! I just keep thinking about Melvin and his hard headed father who stayed in the country. I don't think that I will be sleeping tonight.

Michele I'm glad you like Philly. I should be attending the Caribbean Festival tomorrow at Penns Landing if I can focus through this storm

My dear, I think we are all glued to our tv sets watching every report that comes in about Dean and Jamaica. I pray that Melvin and his dad will be safe.

My manager is attending her sisters wedding there and it's scheduled for tomorrow. I hope Marlita's wedding goes as planned too.

I hope it went as planned as well

ok everyone i talked to does not seem to be worried at all !! ok why are we so worried and they are not alot of people havent even heard abt the storm i guess if ur not watchin tv u wont know i really dont even recall ever seeing news on tv down there have you? and i guess with us here watchin the videos and news we see how bad it really is. ive been tellin them please take shelter and get your mom out of the country but i dont noone is really listenin ! im just so worried about everyone i know one of my friends houses flooded during a bad rain fall a few months ago so imagine what this would do to them this time that person said well ill see what happens when the hurricane gets here

My husband went to the supermarket last night to stock up on the supplies. Though a lot of Jamaicans may be coming off nonchalant, they are making preparations. The supermarket was so packed, he didn't reach home for a couple of hours. My dad was in the supermarket this morning and he has been preparing for the storm for a few days now.
I called my grandparents, who my dad is worried about, and they are like, "nuttin nah go happen. We not worried yu nuh. Lawd, stop worry bout wi, wi fine". laughing.gif laughing.gif
We are going to continue to pray and know that God has it all in control. Nothing more any of us can do, but pray knowing their lives are in God's hands.

Yes, I have been in serious prayers because my SO is still there. They all live in the hills and said that they weren't affected too bad by IVAN so I'm praying that it dies down or diverts. Also, his medical exam is Monday and he called them to ask about coming today and the receptionist was like don't worry because he will still be able to come on Monday. We'll see! Most of his family and my family down there seem to be in good spirits so that makes me feel a little bit better. I'm so worried right now

Hey Shonnie,
I am praying that the hurricane will divert away from Jamaica or that the island is not affected to the extent that we are being led to believe. I wish they had given him the opportunity to come in early for the medical, but hopefully Monday rolls around and he is able to have it done. I know you and Empress have medicals scheduled for Monday and I am praying for you both since your interviews are right around the corner.

  I had to share this with my VJ Yardie family. Finally got our interview date: September 21st @ 1:30 p.m. :joy: :joy:

Tam not to bear any bad news but are you sure you're interview is on 9/21? I haven't seen Kingston do any interviews on Friday in a long time. It's normally Tues or Thurs. Maybe you should double check that.

Anna

Hey Anna,

That's a valid point and in the back of my mind I have been wondering if we will hear later that our date has been rescheduled. My husband is going to call the embassy to verify and I have also sent them an email. I went on the embassy website and they are no longer specifically listing the days that they conduct immigrant visa interviews. It just says by appointment. As soon as we have it verified, I will let you know.
Good looking out

Hey Anna, My husband called the Embassy and they didn't have it in the system, I called the Dept of State and they didn't have it in their system. So I called the NVC again...they said they are the ones scheduling the interviews and this is the date that they told the Embassy to schedule us for. I am assuming the policies for IV interviews are going to change in Jamaica, so I am waiting to see. Pray that this is so :crying: . I am waiting for the letter and I don't care what Kingston seh, if my letter says the interview is this day, I am going to be there on that date at that time to do my interview! Dem try dem best; is time fi a change

With the hurricane coming i pray it passes by the island. Please keep Chris's family in your prayers as his mom house may not stand the hurricane she lives in a board house its pretty much already coming apart and they are trying to build her a cement house now but its nowhere near finish. I pray shes ok being there. I hope she decides to come down from the country and stay with them in the hills that should be safer.

I will certainly keep her in my prayers

Yuh dyam right...again!! Preach, Preach Sis! I would move home inna heartbeat if I couldda live inna JA deh life I live 'ere! I always seh I would LOVE fi send mi pickney dem to school inna JA. Believe it on not, it is a much better educational system den the one here!

We've had this discussion on here before and I totally disagree with you. yes.gif What are you basing this off of? You can get an education ONLY IF you can afford to pay for school, pay for books, pay for uniforms, and pay to get to and from school. Here in the U.S. education is free to everyone. Not to mention, the standards are a lot different. My husband went up through 10th grade and can barely read and write. Here, you wouldn't even get past 2nd grade without these basic skills.

Hey Rhonda,

I hear what you are saying about paying for school in JA. You are correct, that part is totally unfair! However, I am talking about the structure and curriculum taught in JA. Children are taught more at a younger age for example, Physics, Calculus, Biology re started in their equivalent of 6th & 7th grade, in the prep schools. Where as, here that is not even touched upon til 11th & 12th...if you’re lucky! That's why Americans are falling so far behind the world because we don't push our youngsters to develop these tools early enough so the gather a real understanding of how to utilize and master them once in college.

I am a Dean of Academic Advisement at a University here on Long Island, and I seriously can't tell you how many times I have had International Students (including West Indians) come to me and say the Physics/Calc classes are too easy and they learned this 4 years ago back home in high school! Meanwhile many of my U.S. students are coming in and telling me that they just can't keep up with what is being taught because they were not adequately prepared for College-Level course during their primary education.

So again, yes I agree with you when it comes to the equality of all Jamaican children receiving an education, that MUST be corrected and the playing field be made leveled. However, when it comes to what is being taught in the classrooms in JA. I still believe we could learn something!

P.S.- I actually pay $7000 a year in school taxes for my children to attend the public school in my district. So, free is not always so 'free'.

Blessings and respect,

Gill

Ok, I know I'm going to hear it -- but I can't ever remember hearing a Jah Cure song. Ever since I started school, I have only been listening to books on tape, so I don't hear music much and I put my clubbing days on the back burner a long time ago.

Ok Tam,

Jah Cure was JUST released from prison after I think 12-13 years in prison for rape...(I don't know if it's true or not...). Anyway, while in prison he would write and sing these beautiful songs...like "Longing For", "Sticky", "What would it Take?", "True Reflection", "Love is", plus many others...if you get a chance go to YouTube and listen to some. He has a beautiful voice and always sings about relevant issues in JA. and in life. He is a Rastafarian and very talented. It was a big to do in JA when he was released in July 2007.

Yeah, I think that's it! Just go to Youtube and listen. If you like Luciano, Garnett Silk, & Bob ...you'll like Jah Cure! Different voice, same style. yes.gif

Kimmy, nuh laugh afta mi laughing.gif laughing.gif

I knew he got released the other day, I read the news stories and all, but I can't ever remember hearning any of his songs. Those are some of my favorite artistes. I'll have to take a listen to him. yes.gif yes.gif

Yah, his mom, Pansy, is one of Andre's mom, Blossom's, sisters. They consider Blossom and her kids to be "country folk" cause they don't live in Kingston. It's so much drama. I haven't met any of them yet. BTW....he got out on my birthday this year. I was probably more excited then anyone else about the actual date. It's also kind of surreal to hear his music blasting and say, huh, that is my cousin now.

Andre's sister has high hopes of singing back up for him. I hope Jah Cure breaks the news gently to her that she really can't sing all that well.

She lives in New York and sends us these CD's she makes. We were driving in the car one day, trying to listen to one cause she kept asking us if we did. Andre finally popped it out and threw it out the window. Yet, when she asks if we listen to them, he says..."oh yah, I have one in the car right now." I crack up.

I was just reading up on that too. We are 1/2 way through hurricane season. They anticipate 7 or 8 more tropical storms and at least 2 named hurricanes.

I pray every day for no more. I'll add you in those prayers.

Git out...me neva 'ere bout dat one!! Here we go again!! We're only 1/2 through Jomo??!!!!

Thanks JG...

Yeah, only 1/2 way, when you consider the season ends Nov 30th. I remember last year Tropical Storm Alpha...what a stress. Thought I don't want it to come to Florida, I prefer we get it here and it leave Jamaica alone, so him can go to the interview

Ah, yes.....housing and cars. I forgot about that sticker shock. Monthly bills has been a challenge. Andre really wasn't much of a monthly bill payor. It has been difficult to get him to understand just cause we got a nice paycheck doesn't mean most of it isn't already spoken for.

Oh Lord, is it ever already spoken for. Just working to pay bills huh.gif

Can I tell you it took me 1 hour a few weeks ago to explain to Ken (my fiance) what a credit report was, why it was important and how it affects your future!

All he said after my detailed HOUR LONG explanation was..."Mi nuh inna dat deh credit cyard business deh!! Mi aguh be deh one fi hold up deh line EVERYTIME!! Mi nuh business if deh people waan cus mi!"

I was like what the hell are you talking about?

Ken said...'Mi see dat Visa commercial pon TV where heveryone inna foreign use dem credit card fi buy foolishness and the person who a tek out cash stop deh line... mi nuh business...mi a use CASH only, mek dem tand deh!!!

I just laughed and said..."Alright Missa Young, you mus know!!!"

Do you see what I'm dealing wid...but mi love 'im still!! But Jah know...'im drive mi MAD sometimes!! wacko.gif

laughing.gif laughing.gif Nuff people tan so here. When him reach him will understand. My boss also don't deal with the credit card business. Him a mek good money still, but him go ah Victoria Secret fi get summin fi him wife and dem sign him up fi one. Him cancel it same time him get it. Him seh him nuh inna dat,

Can I ask you guys something about the work visas? Does anyone know anything about them?

Reason I ask.....we have some friends who have come to the US on those work programs. They are forever calling and saying they are hungry and need us to send them some cash. How do they pay these people? Do you guys know if housing is charged against salary? And, what kind of preparation is needed on the part of the applicants?.....I mean, like cash reserves or something? It just seems to me, the people we know are ill prepared to come on these programs.

Anyone know anything about these?

My cousin is here on one of those programs. I'll see if I can get any information from him.

did I say I did ? do u ever think why someone of these ppl go the illegal route..they make it almost impossible for anyone to get a visa. Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with braking laws and going against rules, but if they grant a couple extra work visas so ppl can get out of the country and provide better for their families then maybe fraud wouldn't be so high. If u look at it alot of ppl who leave JA is to come make money that in JA u have to work a whole year and go back home to better than what they had. That's all I'm saying. they lock up plenty of people in this country everyday for having weed on them do they get a blood test to see if they're using? They get fined depending on the quantity and released back into society, are they still going to USE ILLEGAL drugs ?

Yu know, because though foreign nice, nuff a we a build up the savings fi go home later and retire there. There is no place like home no0pb.gif

Different topic...

David got his medical done today. Total cost for the medical and the two shot was $7800 JA. He did not have any records for his previous shots taken. He went to Dr Banbury. I thought I would share this info since it appears the cost at other places was almost twice the amount for the VJ members.

Interview Sep 27 @ 1:30pm

Jenice

Congrats on the interview date Jenice,

Where can I find Dr. Banbury in Jamaica...just for future knowledge...cause $7800 JA. SOUNDS DYAM GOOD!! good.gif

Thanks and blessings,

Gill

I'm sure Jenice will be on later, but Dr. Banbury is at Medical Associates in New Kingston

Please sometime blue collar makes more money than white collar...its only a perception..you can have more with the blue collar person sometimes and they don't have that stoosh attitude...like i'm a good catch...can't stand that..

Yu know...When I read that news story on the plumber in NY who makes 7 figures and of course such a profession works out in the long run as there are no student loans that have to paid. When I read the story, I was like "Baby, if you want to be an electrician, a plumber; I have your back"...

Kimmy - I agree with you; I take quality of life over money any day. I remember when my dad used to drive me home from school and we used to travel on the Spanish Town Bypass, I used to look on the 1 room shack and think that sometimes there is more love in those homes than the big mansions on the hill. Money does not equal happiness. The profession I am in will pay off exponentially one day, but it will require lots of traveling and I am not willing to travel to another country for 2 weeks at a time and miss out on time with my family. Many women in the profession tend to not have children and marry well into their 40's. That is not for me. blush.gif
