Hi Ladies, I'm soooo upset right now. mad.gif My daughter was suppose to come yesterday but the stupid ppl at KIN airport closed the flight so now she's coming home on Tuesday. Ordinally this wouldn't be a problem but now there charging me $75 for the change in flight. I cld Air JA reservation line and the lady told me there shouldn't be any other fees but of course it's out of jurisdiction. So I asked isn't this Air JA and she said yes but they don't cover the airports. So I asked her who does, the US blink.gif Her dumb a** couldn't say nothing but pause. She evenutally gave me the # to the Airport and gave me 3 ext's for the supervisor but of course they were all invalid. I finally got thru the the rattid man asked me what I he to do....I swear I wanted to ugh.....so I asked for the supervisor and then was transferred back to a v/m. I "0" out and someone picked up but didn't say anything. You could hear the freaking ppl in the back ground!!!!!!!!!!! I cld back to back and all morning BUT still no answer. Me and Javon even got into b/c he don't seem to understand why I'm so mad. First off she' coming back late as h*ll on Tuesday and w/Air JA reputation most likely they won't get here until midnight AND she starts school on Wed. Not only that another $75 for sh*t. Man, don't get me started!!!!!!!!!

I am so sorry that you are going through this Anna. Air JA has a tendency to close the flight and not say a word to you. They did that to me when I was getting married. Had the first flight out 2 days before my wedding. They closed the flight and didn't say a thing to anybody; I was at the airport til the next day. Someone gave up their seat for me on the last flight out the night after and my luggage didn't come for 2 days. My maid of honor never made it until after I was married. I was so mad and swore never to fly them again...
There is no customer service, so my dear, it may be futile. It seems pretty crazy that a supervisor at the call center is unable to override the charges. They should have the same authority as the supervisors at Norman Manley.

Why do you need extra luggage, can it not fit in the two your carrying plus the carry-on? THe thing about carrying more luggages if you might pay twice. Once at the airport here for overage and another at the JA airport for gifts. I normally carry alot and just pay for overage (if I have to) but when I get to JA I say I have nothing for anyone.

That's my motto...the "nothing to declare" line is my friend.

My husband starts community college this Monday. I told him to bring a letter from his high school stating that he graduated. The vice principal wrote that he went to school from 19** to 19** and graduated. He got into college with that letter only and did not need a transcript. I recommend the letter and skipping the GED part. I don't think my husband even passed many levels. He took the placement entrance exams and did fine. whistling.gif

Thanks BelwinMills. That's a good idea. I wanted him to get his HS transcripts for community college. The letter is a good idea and I will suggest it to him. If needed, we'll get the HS transcripts later. good.gif

Hello everyone.
Congrats to all the recent approvals!! Hope everyones family has recovered alright from the hurricane.

Well I guess it is my turn now to prepare for that embassy. I'll be leaving for JA Wednesday morning for our Thursday interview. From what I can tell from the embassy website, it looks as though the embassy will be open and our interview is going to happen as scheduled(considering the hurricane recovery). Has anyone heard otherwise? I'll probably call on Tuesday to be sure. This may sound like a silly question and probably doesn't matter much but for those of you who went to the interview, what did you wear?

Good luck on Thursday's interview good.gif I'm sure it will go great. From all that I have seen on the embassy website, all systems should be go for your interview on Thursday.

Yea, that sounds like a good idea. I was thinking GED classes for him as well but he has a high school diploma from JA and completed his trade there also. The only thing is, are those qualifications comparable to the requirements needed here? I would hate for him to have to do it all over again but then in a sense it might be better to do so. I told him last night to request his transcripts from his high school so that I may ask around before he gets here. All of his work and school experience is from JA. I know that my cousin came up from JA about 6-8 months ago and she is working as a supervisor at a nursing home. Get this, she came up on a K-1 and did not get married. Long story short: It was an arranged marriage and the guy decided he didn't want to go through with it after she came up. Everyone is trying to figure out he she still is here...lol. But the morale is that she is working receiving a pay check and all and I know for sure she did not go to school here. So, I am assuming that their education back home is good enough. Have you heard anything about this?

Many of us who received our high school diplomas in Jamaica were able to enter college immediately here. Check if your SO got any CXC subjects. That's a pretty big deal, especially if they are trying to get into any college courses...usually they like to see 5 subjects (1's and/or 2's). I would say the CXC subjects validates the high school education, I suppose. I totally agree with another comment that it depends on how well "they learned" in school. I don't know if its fair to say that there are certain schools in Jamaica that may have a better name recognition than others and may also be a source of validation of someone's education in Jamaica.

Thanx guys. All of your answers helped a lot. It looks like we may be struggling for a little while. I'm sure that he will get some odd jobs here and there and I have a cousin who is the store manager for Home Depot so I am going to talk to her when he comes here. With my salary i'm sure we will be able to survive but I really don't know how he is going to deal with relying on me for everything. I'm not sure how this going to work out yet with the job and our living situation but I know that the lord will work something out for us.

Let me stop worrying so much because we didn't even go to the interview yet. Thats just the way I am sad.gif huh.gif .

I think we all worry about this. I have been worrying about it for awhile and have tried to save some money to cover the extra expenses until he finds a job. It is in God's hands and it will work out fine yes.gif
I have been trying to encourage my SO to let the suppliers for his current company know that he is moving here to see if there could be an opportunity for a job in our area. I am also encouraging him to look through school brochures so that he can register for classes in the Spring semester.
I will keep you in my prayers good.gif

Try again Monday. There is a lady at the embassy who is a little rude. She does not answer every time so try calling back. Also when you mail in your DS230, it will sit in their mailroom for a while. Donna's did and she sent it in by courier (DHL).

Don't waste your time calling on Monday, even though there will be no elections, the embassy will be closed mad.gif

We survived the Hurricane Dean. There was no major damage noted where I was staying. The power was off for a few days. Everyone is fine.

So interview.....

We got blue slipped to return with the no impediment form. Blue Slip is a request for more information. Fiance received form already and is schedule to return to the Embassy on Sept. 4th.

I had originally wrote a couple of paragraphs on the experience but it got erased. So I'm keeping this one brief.

Since the Embassy was closed on Monday and Tuesday of this week, I hope that we will not have to wait much longer for an interview. Plus, Monday, August 27th is Election Day. The folks with August 27th interviews were postponed until Thursday, September 20th. I e-mailed the Embassy two weeks ago, and was told that my husband's interview would be in October at the earliest. Our 1st wedding anniversary is on October 20th. That would be the greatest gift- to have him home.

Hey Empress, as Kimmy said "It is all in God's hands". I also believe it is better for him to have been honest than later on it is revealed. I don't think the ladies were trying to be negative - forewarning you on what has happened in the past. As they say to be forewarned is to be fore-armed. Hey everyone. I'm just checking in on everyone and sending out well wishes to all of our loved ones in Jamaica. I hope that everyone can rebuild, and that power and order is restored to everyone's lives as quickly as possible. Gregory lives in St. Ann's Bay and he told me that their power was turned back on last night. Trust me, I was going nutz because of lack of digicel service since early Sunday. He actually had to work (he drives all the boats for Breezes), and they made him take the boats down to Trelawny and stay with them. He was there with others, but it wasn't really in a safe and enclosed area. From the way he described it they were in some sort of cove or something. I don't know...but it sounded crazy and cruel to me!! I didn't hear from him until YESTERDAY so I was thinking he got swept away or something...Anyway, I just thank God that he and his family are ok. I haven't been here in a while, but I just want to say congratulations on the recent approvals and to the recent births on the site!! You guys keep on doing what you're doing!! One luv!!

I can't even imagine not having power for a whole 2 months. A lot of power lines are down in JA and my mom and I was talking about how long it was going to take. Its just crazy because you would think that the electrical company would employ more people to take care of this matter. I'm not just talking now but on a regular basis. The first thing that JA should respect is Preparedness for Disasters. If you know that an attempt of a Hurricane happens so offten or the actual hurricane, then wouldn't it just make sense to make the necessary precautions and develop a quick response team. It just all seems like common sense to me. I don't even know what he is going to do to get power for the cell phones. I know that I'll be down there and we better get our friggin visa because what woman you know is going to travel miles away to be in the friggin dark in another country if she doesn't truly love the person and it isn't legit. Sorry guys I am just pissed off because the country is just to lax for me. We always talk about moving back there after a while but I'm a tell you, I can't move somewhere that is so backwards. They are going to have to make some serious changes for me to live there. I love the beach and the freedom but I also love civilization and common sense.

Though I will certainly agree that there are issues that need to be addressed in Jamaica, it's not like there aren't issues in the US as well. Without looking at what happened with Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, when Wilma came through Florida, it took 6 weeks for us to get our electricity back and we were luckier than others. In essence we have to look at the fact that governments all over the world fail to put systems in place before a disaster strikes. I understand that you are upset, but they are doing the best they can given the resources that are available. I am also not looking forward to going to Jamaica for the interview if creature comforts are not back in place, but just as you will be doing, I am going to do what I have to do and live without if only for a few days.

Hi everyone,

Glad to know everyone is doing OK. My daughter is coming back Sunday and I cannot wait. Hopefully, the roads will be cleaned up by then but we all know how "country" can be. She's in Mandeville and the roads are bad. The house had no damage but lots of water came inside. I was able to speak to them last night and Javon said everything is ok. They also have Digicel and the phone signal is low. They have to stand on their balcony rail to get signal and I didn't want to talk much b/c it's very slippery and I wouldn't feel right if something happened. I was terrified I couldn't concentrate at work yesterday so I went home and cried myself to sleep. Trust me, it was a horrible feeling. I'm soooo glad everything is OK!! I still haven't heard from my Grandma but heard she's doing fine.

Anna

Congrat Marlita on your wedding!!

I am so happy for you. A friend of mine sent pictures showing the clean up of Palisadoes Road to Norman Manley International Airport. I am not sure how many of you fly into Kingston, but I kept wanting to ask my dad and husband what was with the mounds of dirt. Turns out it was from the last brush with Ivan; Dean blew all the dust on the roadway.
Thankfully, they are working diligently to get back to some sense of normalcy from what I am seeing.

Hello from JAMAICA!!

All is well, I am married and it was the most beautiful day in Negril from the last few weeks. We had GREAT weather despite the impending storm. There was actually not a cloud in site on the wedding day. Not one bit of even a drizzle of rain. The Hurricane completely missed our side of the island. Power went down last night about 6pm, but is up and running now, so no problem mon!! We had a generator in the hotel, so we were set. Was the most amazing experience walking down Norman Manley Blvd, in complete darkness and the trees blowing all about and not a soul in sight. For the most part it was just a heavy wind storm. We didnt even get any rain during the night.

Right now its clearing up and the "sun is shining"! I hear that the southeast side of the island got hit a bit worst than us, but still the storm was far less than what I have been reading on the internet. Prayers work wonders, and thats what we all have been doing here. Prayed for Gods favour for our wedding and HE blessed us immensely. Last night prayed for the island of Jamaica, and HE granted us.

Just wanted to stop in while I had internet access and say hello to you all. Keep us in your prayers and hope all your family and friends are doing well. I'll be having internet off and on with my laptop as I get in a Hotspot every now and then, so I will be sure to update our site with new pictures and video from our trip.

Talk soon!!

Cant reach anyone i know crying.gif all phones going straight to voicemail and the land line call not even completing.

Oh JALOVE, I hope you get to speak to someone soon. I am sure everything is alright and it is just that the phones are down in their part of the island. You are in my thoughts and I am praying for you.

Is it bad that outside of worrying about my family and friends I was praying "God do, save di Immigration building because we ah wait long enough".

I'm thinking of flying down to JA tomorrow to salvage some of my vacation. What do you guys think? Does anyone know what type of damage occurred? Or when the airport will reopen? Any information would be helpful blush.gif

So far no reports on when the airports will reopen. I got this from the Gleaner's website this morning: http://www.go-jamaic...icle.php?id=115
I hope you are able to go to Jamaica, or at least that Tony is able to come home early. I was equally impressed that the phone service held up so well throughout the storm. I was talking to my husband every hour on the hour.

Still haven't heard from my grandparents who are on the Northwest part of the island, Lucea Hanover. Please keep them in your prayers. My dad says if he doesn't hear from them by 2pm, he plans to drive down. I am just worried about the road conditions on the way down as I am sure Mount Russo may have some mudslides. blush.gif

I have been listening to the Nationwide radio link that Jenice just posted. It's good to hear how calm everyone seems to be at home. I am happy that we are all here together giving support online while we go through this. smile.gif

Hey Ladies, you can check out this website www.stormcarib.com; there are some people in Jamaica that are posting their experiences with Dean.

I spoke to my dad earlier and he says it looks like one of our neighbour's roof isn't looking too good. They're in Spanish Town. My husband is in Portmore and power is out as is water. When I try to call his Digicel I get a message that due to the hurricane in the area I am calling, our call can not be completed as dialed.
I am trying not to be worried either, but I don't think any of us can help it.

FYI.....

I just used Ezetop.com to send phone credit to Melvin. Some of you may have used this method before but it works within seconds. There is a small fee like a $1.33 US so that isn't too bad. I sent $20 dollars to his digicel phone so that he could call his other family if he isn't able to get out of the home to buy credit from the store. Just wanted to supply you all with this technique in case you need it.

Thanks for the tip, that will help a lot in the coming week.

i just need to stop watching the weather channel.......but i just cant! I just keep thinking about Melvin and his hard headed father who stayed in the country. I don't think that I will be sleeping tonight.

Michele I'm glad you like Philly. I should be attending the Caribbean Festival tomorrow at Penns Landing if I can focus through this storm

My dear, I think we are all glued to our tv sets watching every report that comes in about Dean and Jamaica. I pray that Melvin and his dad will be safe.
