Over-Romanticizing the Filipina
by Leonard Cervantes

Woman By The River – Fernando Amorsolo

Today I saw one of my old college classmates on the subway. He's a Trinidadian guy and we had fun at school talking about whatever things we have in common — not much actually, but we're both island folk in our own way. At one stop, a pretty Filipina girl got on the train and sat next to us, then got off a few stops later. Right after, my friend turns to me and says, "GUY. I LOVE FILIPINO WOMEN."

My first instinct was to pummel him and I didn't know why. As soon as I snapped out of it, my over-critical, somewhat-political mind started to swirl between replies of "Yes, they ARE great." and "But WHY do you 'love' Filipino women?"

Critical me won out and I asked "Oh yah? Why's that?" in a non-threatening way, maybe just the way a Filipino guy is expected to. And he replied, "They're just so EXOTIC. I just like that flava…"

I just shut up at that point, because in truth, he's an alright guy and probably not deserving of a socio-anthroplogical lecture on exoticism of any type. I spent the rest of the train ride thinking of big things, too big to be thinking about at 9 in the morning on a work Friday.

Things like:

- Is it actually OK when people outside our culture look at us as exotic? And when they do, what do they mean? Skin tone? Dark hair? Or does it go deeper, like in an emotional way? Or is it deeper in a bad way like in a submissive Geisha-type sex servant way? Or maybe it IS admirable because exoticism stems from an admiration of the actual heritage?

- How come you never hear white guys say "I love white girls", seldom hear black guys say "I love black women" (well you hear that often these days, if it's Mos Def or someone like that saying it), and almost never Filipino women say "I LOVE Filipino men". Actually, as a Filipino man, I've almost NEVER heard that from a Filipino woman, and honestly… it's always been a bit of a heartbreaker.

Anyone have any experience in changing address? She has her addressed listed on the I-129F as the address she's lived at for the past 8 years, but she recently quit her job and will work on selling her things and move back with her family due to the visa. Should she put her families address when she receives the packet, call the Embassy, or what?

You can update beneficiary's mailing address at USEM by phone, as soon as they have your MNL# in system. Also, you can add an email address for beneficiary at that time. Packet is all online http://manila.usemba...ov/wwwfk1en.pdf. blush.gif

Thanks, she has been using that for reference.

Do I >have< to send her my original tax returns, w2,bank account, etc or can I scan it and send it to her? I'm looking to avoid an $80 cost, but I feel I will have to send it to her. Also, bank statements, letter from job and last years tax return for the AoS should be enough, correct?

Good luck. There are many things to consider. Just a suggestion - searching the forum will lead to answers - there are several good posts around with K1 interview checklists etc. We have a stack of about 5 pounds of papers I am sending besides the I-134. A large part of this is a full copy of I-129F original submission and original supporting evidence, then the ongoing/ bonafide relationships stuff, copies of NOA1, NOA2 etc... Apparently lots of this stuff is only occasionally needed, but when it is, it is critical to avoid further delays. FedEx $100, its part of the deal. Just trying to cover everything in one package and not have to rush to send another! biggrin.gif

I noticed that you were able to call NVC and got your Case number even before u got the NOA2 hardcopy.
We tried to call NVC today, and for some reason, the rep on the phone was asking to read her whatever information that is on the hardcopy which we dont have yet... she didnt even ask for the EAC (receipt number), name of beneficiary , etc.etc.

any idea about this?

Thank you!

As I recall.... I just said I received email and SMS notice of an approved petition and they quickly asked for USCIS receipt number (WAC.... from NOA1, NOA2 same#), beneficiary name & DOB and petitioner name & DOB only, then they provided the MNL#, date received, and said it should go out to Manila within about two weeks whenever enough are ready to send off.... Maybe there was an address verification too. Also added that same info would be sent by letter so no need to call. blush.gif I called in late evening, about 10pm EST. NVC operator available 0730-2400 EST M-F at 603-334-0700. Just call again....

WOW some are reading alot into a simple post. Just asked what was the correct fees for departing and some are quick to throw the don't be a cheap jerk card. Of course She will have more than enough for travel and any expenses. She said that 2000 pesos was ample and I knew better than that is why I added this post. Am well aware of the cost of living, support needs after she arrives as well. Not in need of any lectures on cost of living and suport. For those who helped with good solid information on terminal fees and taxes thankyou.

adventure509, Sorry dude, very groggy last night. No offenses meant on my part, a wholehearted apology. Mainly was trying to convey the need for x-tra dollars rather than just pesos in transit. I left Manila in May with barely the cash to get through the airport and pesos had no value once en-route. Again, sorry for the jerkishness... A sincere congrats and best wishes.

Went to USPS and lucky for me the guy there was filipino and was telling him needed it there today.
I should of sent it a few days ago lol. he said be honest with you by mail there sucks. It will get there and just sit there on their end. They can't help it once it gets there.
He said use a private carrior if you want to get it there fast. Fedex would do the trick that is what he uses becasue they have own jet and will sort it and get it out.
Just some advise from a good source kicking.gif :-) so i ran down to fed ex.

If you want it there today - you should have already sent it! That's good advice. laughing.gif I sent a gift package by USPS and it took three weeks to Davao City, luckily. Embarassed to say but I wanted to save $40 when sending a package from there to here using Philippine post office instead of FedEx - after three months - nothing. crying.gif There are several posts warning about theft at Philippine Post Office... ph34r.gif

Sounds like that is no savings at all. I want to save heartache, so I'm going to use FedEx. I hear the 1Lb envelope is Flat Rate, and you actually can have more than one Lb to Phils for about $50 bucks.

I sent my stuff in a padded mailer marked "Documents Only-Contains No Cash" on the outside through registered mail. It made it in two weeks, no problems. But, to be safe, use Fedex, or LBC, if you want door-to-door guaranteed delivery.

The only thing about the missing package that takes some of the bite away is that it was a defective netbook - the keyboard was totally messed up - so at least it is a pain to the new owner! Well - that's what I keep trying to believe! mad.gif

Did you send the original copy of approval from the uscis? I also sent letters from friends and family that have seen my Honey and I together for additional evidence.

I will send only copies of the NOA1/NOA2. Embassy knows petition was approved, if they got the packet there.

so i basicaly have everything i thought i needed. Should i make a copy of my birhtcirtificate too? didnt' think of that it is part of the 129packet though huh. i didn't want to send it yesterday just to make sure i have everything filled out.

What is the best way to get it there by 6 days? Should i use Fedex, DHL which is how she got her stuff i think. Or UPS? I like fedex but not sure if it is over there?? Maybe the old post office too?

FedEx is there as Air 21, and its the same service used by the USEM. Four days Portland, Oregon to Davao City (6.3 lbs $150!). Good luck!

I'm just curious to know if anyone here has done the St. Luke's medical examination in the Manila? If so, can you please name every single thing that the examination conducted? My fiancee is convinced it's a full body physical, but I thought maybe it's a blood test and a few other things.

Full medical. Here's a link to an informative post. Good luck.
