To be fair, I have expressed my concerns and what I feel and been brutally honest. I did say to her, I'd rather let her go because I do love her than ruin her life by making this change under great pressure and without 100% commitment. My fiancée's "support situation" (job/family/friends) outside of our relationship in the USA, maybe isnt as strong as mine here is in the UK (in my opinion). On the other hand, the wedding **has** to be in the USA, due to family demands.

Her reaction was that "you love me, this HAS to work if we work hard and both love each other"

No, you don't sound harsh and I wish i'd had this BEFORE the interview and issuance, but I cant control my feelings. I am constantly toying with the "gamble, you can do it (emmigrate) more than her" thought.

Like Alan I moved to the US when I was 59. I retired from work and left for the US 10 days later and it is hard to settle in. At the moment I am having speech problems, I am starting to forget which pronunciation of a word is the UK way or the US way.

The big scary thing here is there is no safety net. No government handouts if you lose your job or generally make a mess of things. People here make it standing on their own 2 feet and working hard quite often more than one job. If you've got what it takes to succeed here that has far better rewards than the UK and I don't just mean material. But you have to come with the right attitude of giving it 100% to be successful.

To be very harsh, if you can't decide to come or not or come with the attitude if it doesn't work out I'll go home are you going to put enough effect into it to make it a success.

As to missing friends and family. I lived about 4 hours from my son, I lived in London he lives in Wakefield, I see more of him now than I did in the UK a holiday in America that only costs a plane ticket is too good to miss and he comes over quite often. I live an hour from the skiing and about the same from the beach Your friends and family will jump at the chance of going to visit, don't let missing them put you off. If you love this young lady get your butt on the plane otherwise you are likely to miss the opportunity of a lifetime and spend a lifetime regretting it, somethings you don't get a second chance at. This really is a great place to live and make a life in.

And if I have read all these links properly, what this boils down to is that you cannot come to the UK as a visitor, marry a UK citizen, and remain in the country - as can be done by a UK citizen in the US?

That's correct Rebecca. You must enter on a fiance visa or be in the country on a valid non-tourist visa. They changed that in 2005.

In all the time I worked alongside immigration at Heathrow you were not been allowed to enter the UK and then change your status while in the UK. You had to leave and come back to do so. What the rational behind it was I don't know because in most cases it was just a paper exercise which could just as easily have been done in the UK as out.

The UK driving test isn't that hard, my wife who had never even driven a car before she went for her test in Oregon and then learnt as she went along passed her UK test at the first attempt. Harder than the US one but not a problem if you can drive properly.

The UK visa's is much easier because there are virtually no checks before hand. The US does all or it not all it seems like checks before they even grant the visa. Hence those checks have to be done somewhere and the UK doesn't them later in the process.

Overall I remain of the opinion the process is pretty much on a par between the two.

After that - I think that her coming to the UK was much harder than me going to the US - I am taking about national insurance number/tax people /driving licence/getting a bank account etc - I did it in the US and she did it here in the UK - so WE KNOW !!!!

Have to disagree with that. We have done it both ways and I doubt one way is anymore difficult than the other, both quite straightforward and easy just different.

The only part which stands out was getting her ILR stamp. We needed it for a trip back to the US and so had to go and apply in person. That day at Lunar House in 1998 still lives vividly in my memory. If we had just posted the forms of it would have been very easy.

That't the civil partnership visa, which requires you to prove that you have cohabited for two years in order to be eligible. That's the one geared to same-sex couples.

It allows for same-sex couples, but heterosexual couples can just as easily use it. smile.gif

Where is the best place to look for UK visas and information?

It is looking like my fiancée might come here now instead. When we get married, it will still hopefully be in the US, but right now, we are looking at living together in the UK first, then going at a later date to marry. Is this possible? To bring a long term partner over to the UK to live with but without a wedding planned?

Teddy.

I am fairly sure she could only come as a visitor and I bet a pound to a penny the UK immigration officer at the port would deny her entry if they got wind of the circumstances. If she did get in as a visitor it would only be 6 months at most. She could come on a fiancee visa or spouse visa but I guess that isn't what you are looking for.

United KingdomQuestion to those who have filled out Packet 3 ....
No all the items listed on the check list you take with you to the interview, you do not send them before hand.

The forms the Embassy sent to apply for the visa need to be completed and returned.

You send the check list back when you have all the items listed on it. If you have those already return check list with the Embassy forms

United KingdomTransferring Money

Hello,

I have a few questions for those of you who transfer money between US and UK bank accounts. My husband has an account in the US, and he also has his account in the UK. He needs to transfer money from his US to his UK account on a fairly regular basis.

Does anyone else do this? If so, how do you transfer money? What have you found to be the least expensive way of transferring money?

Is it expensive to transfer through what the bank has set up? What about paypal? I may check into that. My other idea is for his mom in the UK to have a check card from his US account. She could then withdraw the money from the account using his ATM card, and then deposit it into his UK account.

Any other ideas?

TIA.

Use a commercial currency broker. They invariably charge the lowest fees, if any and give you the best exchange rate. There are several to choose from.

I use MoneyCorp www.moneycorp.com to have my pension transferred from the UK to the US on a monthly basis and also for the occasional one off transfers. As an example my pension is on a fixed rate 2 year contact at $1.92. This was arranged when the market rate was $1.95 and the rate from my bank was $1.87 and both those were just for a one off transfer

If you search Google you will find other companies and it is a case of finding one which suits your needs, as they have varying minimum amounts which can be transferred and have slightly different costs.

United KingdomPaying UK taxes while living in the US???

UK citizens are not liable for UK tax if they do not live and work in the UK... if you leave a UK bank account then any money in it will be taxable or if you still have property you will still have to pay council tax and if you rent out your property you would be liable for tax on the income from it...

But for most people they are not required to pay any tax once they have left the UK..

Kez

The UK and USA have a reciprocal tax agreement. You can choose which one to pay tax in. So if you live in the USA and have income in the UK you can in fact choose to pay the tax on it in the USA, you cannot be taxed on it twice.

Like all rules there are some exceptions. I am in receipt of a UK government pension and the rules say I must pay tax on it in the UK, but then the IRS exempt me from tax on it in the USA.

It normally pays to opt to pay tax on any UK income in the USA as the tax rate usually works out to be less but individual circumstances mean these things need to be checked carefully. We took professional advice before leaving the UK.

United KingdomMaking the adjustment easier..

Assuming all goes well the SO will be joining me here in June. I've already found quite a few things that will do as substitutes for what he's used to there. I have Fox Soccer, planning on having the Guardian delivered once a week and found a small brewery that he's quite happy with.

Stumbling blocks are non-premiership football and sausages. I suspect there is no way to get around the fact they don't broadcast the football here, but was hoping for some suggestions on the sausages. On his visits we've tried various Italian sausage brands, but they just aren't the same apparently. I should mention I'm completely clueless on the issue as I'm vegetarian.

I know this is just little stuff in the scheme of things, but they're things he loves..he's giving up so much seems the least I can do to have ready substitutes when possible.

Thanks in advance.

There is a TV channel run by Sentanta - www.setanta.com - they also show UK soccer including the Championship and some league 1 and 2 games. Also rugby and European football. In the UK they show NASCAR, baseball, college football and ice hockey.

English sausages have defeated us so far. We have found a butcher who makes what he calls English sausages and they are close, but none of the larger supermarkets sell anything close.

United KingdomPolice Records

Any thoughts on a canabis possession? he was arrested and went to court but was never in custody...this was about 12 years ago...

If he was convicted he will have a criminal record and it will be on his police certificate.
LansburyMaleEngland2006-10-11 02:56:00
United KingdomPolice Records

Ok so if the Police Report comes back clear then there are no recorded arrests and therefore he has no record? (by the way, it was for a drunk & disorderly...something that seems to be common in a lot of younger people by the look of the cop shows here in England. lol)

Drunk and Disorderly is not a recordable offence so there wouldn't be a record on the PNC.

However if he was arrested for it and went to Court, there would be an entry in the Court records as well as the police possibly having a custody record. I say possibly because if it was so long ago they were using paper custody records they don't have to be kept for more than 6 years so may have been destroyed. If the 6 years are up it is not certain they have been. If the custody record was on a computer that should still be available.

The arrest should be declared to the Embassy with an explanation of what it was. If you do that it will not be a problem, lie about it and if found out major problems.

United KingdomPolice Records

I've seen a few people on here that have received Police Certificates for an records a person may have. What if a person received one that has no record but they know they have been arrested, AND it is really close to the 11 year mark where everything gets wiped?

The plan is to answer yes to being arrested but show the certificate says nothing.
What happens when you enter the US for the first time? Is it going to have to be answered again or is the K-1 Visa going to suffice at the border since the US and Consulate already okayed everything.

A police certificate only shows convictions for most people. It is only quite recently I have noticed when doing checks on people on the Police National Computer that an entry might show a not guilty verdict in court or a matter where a person was charged but the case was dropped before it got to court.

By the way if the 11 year mark you mention refers to the PNC, nothing gets wiped from it, until they are notified by a police officer a person with a record has died or the person would be so old it is not possible they are still alive. The USA does not recognise our Rehabilitation of Offenders Act so there are no such thing spent convictions for visa applicants.

If have been arrested and not charged with a recordable offence and you should not have a PNC record.

United KingdomPlease Please Help...

Hi,

The lawyer has mentioned they are able to make him pay what they demand even though he's living in the US. Apparently under something called the "Hague Convention" the UK has a reciprocal agreement with most the states to force non-custodial parents to pay.

The Hague Convention deals with matters of child custody and maintenance etc, and in simplest terms means that any orders or legal agreements in force in a country which is a signatory to the Convention can be enforced in any other country which is also a signatory. Both the UK and USA or signatories to the convention.

I only have experience in enforcing custody orders and child abduction offences under the Convention, but from personal experience I can say the Legal Attache's office at the US Embassy in London will do all in its power to observe and enforce the requirements of the Hague Convention.

United KingdomWondering which is faster?

Seems that people handle Packet 3 differently. Some fill in the forms and send them right away, following up with the checklist when ready. Others wait to tick every box on the checklist before mailing the whole thing off.

Wondering if it would be possible to take a little informal poll to figure out which way is actually faster, or if it makes any difference.

If memory serves me correctly I thought it said on the instructions which come with packet 3 not to send the forms but to send just the check list back when you have all the required documentation available. I' m sure that is what we did and we got packet 4 very quickly after sending packet 3.

Hi ALL

We recently filed an I 130 petition through the London USCIS office on the 2nd Feb and our Credit Card was charged on the 6th by the embassey. To date we haven't yet received any acknowledgement from the embassey that they have received the petition and I was wondering if this is unusual ? I have also read somewere on this site that with this application you don't get an NOA 1 but a postcard ?

Has anyone had the same experience or am I been just TOO eager !

Thank You !

Don't worry you will get a post card to say that the file date is the 6th Feb. If they have charged your credit card all is progressing.

If you go to http://london.usemba...i130filing.html you can see what filing date they are processing the I-130s for. Currently shows 21-11-06.

We didn't receive the postcard until a few days after the credit card was charged

United KingdomParking near the embassy?

Hi all,

My fiance has his interview in London tomorrow (eep!), and is only now trying to book his train down from Manchester--we won't talk about that :-) Obviously being so last minute it's dead expensive, something like 170 quid, and it seems like driving may be a more economic option. Does anyone know if there is anywhere to park near the embassy, or even a car park or something near public transport that will take him there? We really would rather not have to spend so much money, but will if parking is out of the question.

Thanks!

Elizabeth

As Boiler said the underground car park at Hyde Park Speakers Corner. It is 24 hour and a short walk to the Embassy

Ok,

So i have package 3, and most of the correlating evidence is on its way...while I'm taking deep breaths trying not to hyperventilate, what should I actually be doing?

Should I send back the first part ASAP? (the DS156, 156k and the 157k)
Should I book a medical now? (or is it best to try and get one the day before? Dont fancy travelleing to London repeatedly!)
or should I run around going AAAAAAARGH!

My police check is 2 weeks applied for, my fiancee is mailing me her stuff on Saturday/monday?

I'm so excited, but it seems like this is the part that is easy to not do as efficiently as possible/

Thanks

Teddy

The only problem with your scenario is that the doctor has to get the medical results to the Embassy before they will issue the visa. The doctor needs 2 to 3 days to get the result of the tests back and then has to send them to the Embassy.

If you want the Embassy to be able to say you have the visa on the day of the interview you need to have had your medical in time for them to have received the results.

United Kingdombritish TV in the states ?

Does anyone know which cabble TV / sattelite TV to get to watch English football,

As already suggested FSC (Fox Soccer Channel) which I get as part of the Sports Package from Direct TV, the US equivalent of SKY.

There is also Setanta Sports which carries the English Premier League. I had both initially and dropped Setanta as FSC has matches from other English leagues as well as the Premiership. Both carry some games live, which is a bit early out here on the US west coast but in Florida a 3pm UK kick off would be ok.

Both channels carry matches other than English and Setanta carries The 6 nations rubgy as well.

United KingdomPacket 3 Clarification

Hi all,

I appreciate this is the UK General Discussion forum, but as I'm in the UK and currently going through the immigration visa process, I was hoping people with personal experience could clarify something for me. (If this is best directed in another forum, please advise which one :) )

I have recently received what I believe is "Packet 3" (enclosed are the DS-230, OF-169 and other information regarding the medical and vaccinations, etc) as a result of my wife's petition approval, however I am a little confused with what I'm supposed to be sending back.

I have read on the usaembassy.org website to send the form DS-2001 which is a checklist and application readiness form, however Packet 3 has no mention of this form at all. However, the OF-169 appears to be a similar form in this regard anyway.

Should I just send the OF-169 back, and ignore the need to send the DS-2001? Also, the OF-169 has a field that says "Date of Medical Examination", yet I have also read not to schedule this until we know when the interview date will be, should I leave this field blank, or schedule an appointment first?

Any clarification would really be appreciated on this.

Many thanks!

Jonathan

There is more than one check list and they have different numbers. I confused myself by looking on the Embassy web site and the one I actually received was different.

There should have been printed instructions in the packet you received follow those. I schedule the medical straight away and had it before I had received the interview date. Just phone and arrange it then you can include it on the check list. That way the Embassy can at least see it has been arranged. They have after all given you the details on how to arrange it and I guess expect you to just get on with it.

United KingdomUS Embassy for sale
There is short news snippet in this weeks expat weekly Telegraph that the US Embassy in London has been put up for sale with a price tag of £90 million.

Apparently it is part of a global plan to move those US Embassies which are thought to be security risks to more secure locations.

and to think there was all that fuss after the Soham murders because information on Ian Huntley hadn't been shared and the press thought that the murders could have been prevented.

United KingdomFor The Footie & Rugby Fans

For any Brits missing the ability to watch live football or rugby (both international and domestic) the search is over. We had DirecTV installed at our new house specifically because they offer a residential version of the Setanta Sports Channel. Setanta used to only be available through bars and pubs who had to buy a commercial isence but now $14.99 per month gets you round the clock coverage of a huge amount of sport from the UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ and South Africa. I can watch more premiership football and rugby from my living room in Illinois than I ever could in London.

They show a lot of live games, plenty of delayed broadcast games and then these are often repeated throughout the week if you aren't around to catch them first time around. I'll be able to watch the England v South Africa match LIVE on Saturday morning and that is on after they show Wales v Australia and Argentina v Ireland... all LIVE !! They show 2 or 3 premiership football games each day over the weekends and I was also able to watch Champions league matches as well. I was even able to watch European cup rugby final live from Twickenham on Saturday. They show aussie rules, gaelic football and several games from other soccer leagues around the world. They also show Tri nations rugby, Australian super league rugby league and a bunch of other stuff too.

I can't reccommend the channel highly enough and would call it a must for any fan of footie or rugby from anywhere in the world but especially for those Brits now living on a diet of baseball and 'football'.

If you have DirecTV $15 a month for 24/7 coverage of all the best sports on the planet is cheap at twice the price !!

Mark :)

I had that when I first got Direct TV. However I cancelled it in preference to the Sports Package which has the Fox Soccer channel on it. Depending on what package you have from Direct TV adding the Sports Package can be cheaper than Setanta, in our case 50% cheaper. However I would only recommend the Sports Package if you are looking for English football and are not interested in rugby. The Fox soccer channel has 3 premiership games on a Saturday and Sunday depends on what is being played. Also has UEFA and games from other European leagues.

The other advantage to the sports package is if you like to watch the sport of our adapted country it has a choice of those as well including MLS (Major League Soccer) so you can see just how good the US are getting at the game.

One isn't better than the other but they offer a different selection of sports depending on what you like to watch.

After all the time you have spent in the UK you should understand by now that for the British the important thing is not winning or losing but how you play the game. :innocent:
