When this is all over they will be guilty or innocent

If they are guilty - those of you who said they were innocent will look stupid
If they are innocent - those of you who said they were guilty will look stupid

Only people who say that with only 10% of the facts being public knowleage, it is stupid to speculate , will be right either way.

The only person to lose their job will be the police dog that said quite clearly in a high pitch that only a british bobby can hear, that a decomposing body had been there

I'm not surprised, to be honest. Something has never rang true in this case, the parents always seemed, well, can't think of the correct word, but just "not right".

Agreed - I always sensed that there was at least something that the parents weren't mentioning, whatever that may be.

Hopefully that is way off the mark and the girl is found in good health.

There was something 'not quite right ' about the police dog too..

It sort of looked sideways and showed no emotion when somebody shouted 'cats !'

Everything 'looked right' when Tony Blair listed all the WMD's in Iraq so perhaps 'looking right' is not the decider when trying to figure out if something is true or not.

Donald Rumsfeld said there was nothing wrong with 'water boarding' suspects when the case was serious enough..

This is where you cover the subject's face with cling fiilm and hold them under water until they choke.

has anyone tried this on a dog and does it work ?

I am working as a temp at the RSPCA so would you send me an email there please...British public wouldn't stand for that treatment of a dog so it may not be workeable.

thanks

I think the dog that pointed out the smell of dead body should be demoted from deputy dawg to erroneous dawg

It should also be charged with wasting police time and causing thousands of media mawks to go to Portugal thus cancelling out all carbon savings made by david cameron and his family. That is possible under Portuguese law as I understand it from a report in the SUN summarised on cnn

My question is this - do lie detectors work on dawgs ? perhaps that beach just wanted a reward treat

Any witness who testifies for an incentive is guilty of perverting the course of justice and this case should be transferred to North Korea

where a hot dawg is just that whether it is in hot pursuit or not

This post is a mixture of blind ignorance and wrong facts along with some correct facts and correct law.

Some class hatred/prejudice by 'working class' people as well

Aren't we supposed to encourage people to get educated and get professional jobs rather than having a pop at them because they 'made it' in society - a dose of envy around I reckon. Says a lot about us Brits and whether class envy and hatred has really gone away.

Well the Guardian readers will think one thing and the Sun readers will think something else.

I read neither which doesn't mean I don't read.

I wouldn't like to think some contributors to this thread were on any jury trying me - far to quick to presume guilt and confused about what constitutes murder etc.

Murder is the killing of a human being, by a human being, with 'Malice aforethought' either expressed or implied

If being dour and unemotional was proof of guilt then our prime minister Mr Brown should be behind bars now..

Why not just let the law take it's course instead of pre-judging ...We presume they are innocent at this monent don't we ? as good Brits or Americans we are duty bound to think that way - its the law.

They may well be as as innocenct as OJ was shown to be - and if they aren't then they would still get off if some portuguese policeman had called them an 'english pig'

United KingdomHello all you people in the UK forum...
the ladies are very different aren't they - all meadows and buttercups and babies smiles and poor princess diana...

Never mind all that squidgy, starry eyes simpleton stuff..

What is going to make me really happy next year is buying a 268 horse power Toyota for the price of a lawnmower in the UK - and filling it with gasoline for the price of a couple of beers.

Then I am going to get a whacking great speedboat and zoom around in the gulf of mexico slicing the heads off those nasty tuna-killing dolphins.

Then I am going to get a superb BMW motorbike for the price of a push bike and park it near the Harleys so they can see what real engineering looks like instead of those junky lumps of old iron they chug around on

The one who dies with the most toys wins ! haha !

Babies are over-rated - I had two of em and they are both a continuing nightmare. They will all be in re-hab in a few years anyway and then 50% of em get divorced etc etc . Reality check time !

yes this year was the pits but next year is mine...boy thinking rules ! Girl power had it's day but really they are at their happiest swapping photos and eating cream buns and scraping nappies (diapers) off the backsides of uncomprehending identical little pink babies.

Gordon Brown lost an eye at rugby - just losing an arm or something is pansy stuff

Well, there have been a few American football players who have ended up as quadraplegics from injuries sustained while playing the game. Is that manly enough for you?

quadraplegics eh ? well thats only both arms and both legs - they can still see and hear so it isnt that rough....

If I had turned up for rugby wearing a helmet and foam padding and a little towel hanging down the front of my shiny tight bottoms they would have laughed me off the pitch... I would have been sent to play rounders with the girlies.

losing 4 pints of blood and all your teeth and an eye or two only got you a cold sponge and a glass of orange juice

So right you are. Thank you for sharing your ups and down Alan. I'm just starting, and if I was relying on official info to plan the coming months, I would be totally at sea. Swimming blind in to months of very scant correspondence with the embassy, and that's only DCF. Thanks to VJ I know that even 6 months of waiting is speedy.

I hope you never have to go through it again, and Florida treats you nice.

Many thanks Lansbury - you were there for me through this horror show and I appreciate it. I think it's because I am a professional administrator by trade that I found this so hard - normally the harder you work at something, it eventually gives and so it's just a question of applying time and effort and money and knowledge.

With this lot you hit barriers that NOTHING can shift and the frustration builds up to a point where you are tearing your hair out for what to do to make things happen - the answer is 'nothing' most times.

Glad to have helped in anyway I could.

In the years I spent in Special Branch I found my postings to Heathrow Airport working alongside the immigration service very enlightening. Having met immigration officers from other parts of the world as well they all have one thing in common. It is their aim in life to prevent people getting into a country they seem quite happy if they manage to achieve that. innocent.gif

My pal Bob transferred to special branch - i think it was so he could get off with the air hostesses at leeds airport....
I have no fears about POE at chicago unless I get a young lady officer - they really scare me - they never smile and are so keen to 'get' somebody. I will watch the sequencing of the booths and if necessary i will invite the people behind me in the line to go in front of me so i get a chap when it's my turn.
When I was 19, I was put in the back of a police van in leeds on my own with a drunken prostitute we had arrested for knifing a client. She started fighting me all the round the walls and roof and floor of that van and it was like being in with a deranged tiger and i will never forget it. My buddies opened the van doors when we got to the cell area and laughed themselves hoarse at the sight of me. I reckon they knew her and did it on purpose

It must have scarred me for life cos I am quite scared of 'the gentle sex'. Three years ago a lady threatened to 'glass me' in the face if I didn't buy her a drink. The year before that a woman punched me in the nose for 'walking away when i am talking to you'

anyway that's my POE plan...

ok back to planning the motorbike and speed boat !

Alan glad they showed you that they can be nice and helpful and sent you an IR-1 visa. Hope your last few days in the UK are stress free for you and Carolyn and that you have a safe and uneventful trip back to the US.

If I want to do something for the human race, I don't need to go to Africa, I just need to hang around in VJ and help some suffering people out.

Well I started this visa journey in December 2004 and after 2 (yes 2) K1 petitions and extra medical in the US and one Adjustment of Status and one biometrics in Milwaukee and now a 10 month saga of errors getting an IR1, you can be sure I have retired from all this stuff and visa applications are just something that happens to other people.

When we change address I will send in our 2 forms and then call the uscis 3 weeks later to make sure they have actioned them - apart from that I am free at last, free at last.

Just got a scratching noise at the door and it was the courier with my visa pack !

I said 'I thought you sent a text the night before' and he said 'dont know anything about that'
He said 'are you going for a holiday' and I said ' nope I am going to live there..'

He said 'rather you than me mate - I cant stand yanks !' Carolyn was upstairs otherwise he would have been dead meat and I would have got blood on my visa

ANYWAY - FINALLY GOT THE VISA

and guess what, my suspicion that they might issue a IR1 was right

It's an IR1 with last Friday's date - even though we haven't been married 2 years yet !

That means there is now a chance they wont screw up and issue a conditional 2 year green card as long as we enter after november 4

I GOT IT !!!!!

The special wine we have been saving since January 9th can now be opened...

A big thanks to my VJ buddies and a big poop to the others haha ! I may go a bit quiet for 3 weeks then return to the madhouse to see what you guys are getting hit with and see if I can help

thanks again everyone

Thanks for the support folks - I have had it with immigration stuff - if Carolyn ever leaves me there is no way I will get my credit card out and order a Thai lady----

I will just get a nice cat and buy a garden hut and get some rabbits and live like a hermit until my three score and ten is up

I am now worrying about the visa; the first guy said 'are you sure you won't be going until you have been married 2 years' and I said yes 5th November, and he entered something on the screen. At first I thought - hey he is going to issue an IR1 post dated to 5 November, that will be great as it might help the green card office to issue a 10 year card.

Now I am thinking that might happen, but instead of the post dating it, they might actually issue it 5 November and send it out then.

We are booked to fly 5th November - hire car-U haul-apartment-motels....

So it will be too late

Haven't told Carolyn this as she would freak out... but looking forward to getting the text message from the couriers all the same.

My advice to those following on ? ASSUME nothing. ANYTHING can go wrong. You could not invent the stuff that actually goes wrong.

In the Embassy letter it says don't book anything until your visa is in your hand - I always thought that was bull - now I don't

POE ? I haven't heard of a VJayer with a visa turned back yet - I will look up the number for the Guinness book of records just in case

Got horrible chest infection from low resistance brought on by 'visa depression' and 2 days packed face to face with people on the London underground - might have to buy some Jack Daniels for medicinal purposes....

Glad you got the visa Alan, can only suggest you get here before the 8th Nov, wonder what they in store for you at the POE rolleyes.gif

I have spend months reassuring people about the interview saying it's a piece of cake.

When it comes to mine I get that !

The visa should be with me Wednesday and we fly 5th November but ANYTHING can happen at any stage as I have learned and NOTHING can be taken for granted..

My wife is a programmer and I said to her, 'surely, after the 8th November they wont be able to cancel a file that is completed with the visa actually issued' - she started laughing....

perhaps I should go to both interviews and get 2 visas ?

They seemed stunned that I was allowed in and my name was on the clipboard before I could even join the line outside !

He insisted that I must have phoned the embassy and asked for my interview to be delayed 3 weeks - Eh???? as if !

I wonder if there is someone out there with the same name who is going to have a nasty shock when their application is canceled for non attendance ! I was once on a training course with 2 other people of my name - the first month I was top of the class, the second month bottom and the third month top again
Still dont know if i am clever or not....

At k1, the social security issued my card with my name wrongly spelled - only 4 letters and a common english name !

lemme out of this process !

Hope my title isn't too dramatic haha !

ok so I arrive 10.10am for my 10.30 interview yesterday - much better system - they check your appointment letter against their list then you go straight through security as you arrive. Before, they used to line you up in the rain for an hour then let you go in as a herd.
There was a sign saying ONLY applicants are allowed in.
Got the numbered ticket and sat down - only 2 in the immigrant number sequence - after 10 mins i saw my number and went to the numbered station.
Gave him my big smile hi routine and he was a Brit and very relaxed and jolly but with a hard glint in the eye. He gave me the appointment letter back and looked at his screen - you appointment is not till November 8th he said. I felt that VJ sinking feeling. No it's today I said . He said 'How did you get in here' and he meant it. I pushed the appointment letter back at him. He said Well didn't anyone check you outside? I told him I was checked twice.
He said 'Well you dont have an appointment today '. We looked at each other and then he said - 'stay here' and he walked off.

I got that massive wave of depression that I got when we were denied at NVC for Domicile and when the petition was going UK-Nebraska-California-UK-London -Nebraska California. I thought of the train fares and the hotel and our Chicago flights and hire car and U-haul and the Apartment lease and I started to withdraw.

He came back eventually and picked up my medical results and gave me my xray and I started to believe. We did all the certificates and he said to sit down and wait for the interview. The interview was called and it was 10.50 - 20 minutes after i got there ! I started to cheer up and then saw it was a slim young woman of south east asian appearance who looked very zealous and professional - they always hate me as I am cocky and cavalier.
She produced the NVC file which had an orange sticker on it which said 'domicile' She started asking me domicile type questions and i was ready with the USCIS letter from London saying they would not take Carolyn's petition as they regarded her as U.S. domiciled and her storage charges for her furniture in Milwaukee and her active bank accounts and credit card in the US. Also her return flight tickets and UK job resignation.

I said I have some papers here about Carolyn's domicile and she snapped at me and said 'DO NOT SAY ANYTHING UNLESS I ASK YOU A QUESTION !'

I was quiet taken a back as I am not used to being told to shut up by anyone I am not married to.

anyway she asked me where I was born and she had obviously never heard of Yorkshire. She asked me when I got married.

She asked why Carolyn was not with me and I said there was a big sign saying only applicants would be allowed in.

She gave me a really hard time about whether Carolyn was working in the US before she came to the UK and on and on.

Then she closed the file and said 'This case is now complete and the visa is approved- you will receive it in 3 to 5 working days - go over to the courier desk with the form'. She looked away and got on with something else.

At no time did she smile or relax or show a flicker of warmth or humanity and the way she just turned away was robot like...

When we got home there was another packet 4 on the doorstep with a date of 8th November. It wasnt a rescheduled appointment it was a standard packet 4

It was mailed October 11 but must have got stuck in the mail strike..

If it had come October 12th, what would I have done..

I can't wait for this insanity to end but I know I am long way off - green card etc - no way it will be right. I might even get aletter saying I didnt turn up 8th November and they are cancelling the case

It really is a continuing nightmare

United KingdomShipping Problem
Being a bit of a social realist, I have to say that for most people, xmas get-togethers are a minefield and the majority of relationship breakdowns take place over xmas and the new year - stimulated in many cases by the family occasions.

I remember one xmas with my ex when the big black elderly labrador plonked itself at my feet and started making the most appalling smells. Right after I had eaten my lunch too. I asked if 'blue' could be put outside for a while and I was told that if anyone was going outside it would be me.

That finished me off with xmas get - togethers so any excuse I could get to miss one - well I would grab it.

I was single for 18 years and I noticed that the fourth week in January was when the pubs were full of vulnerable women who had broken up at the new year. It was like a salmon run for grizzly bears.

half of em went back to their partners after a few weeks but it was fun while it lasted

and Saywhat, if you ever find yourself in the unfortunate position of being in London, I don't think that the fish and chips from 'Rock and Sole Plaice' in Covent Garden, or 'Fryer's delight' on Theobalds Road - with fish straight from the docks that morning - would dissappoint even you!!

Hey I didn't say anything against London fish and chips - it's Lancashire where I am imprisoned now that is the problem. I only found one fish and chip shop that isn't Chinese and it's Greek and theirs smell of kebabs! My best fish shop in Yorkshire is Greek but they do it the traditional way and theirs is scrumptious. We have been here since February and drive around with palid grey faces enhancing our carbon snow-shoe prints trying to hunt down a 'beef dripping' fish 'ole... no luck so far !
We give notice soon on this rented gastronomic desert so prob will soon be solved. I intend to catch my own in Tampa Florida (next to the nuclear reactor) and barby em in the garden or fry em in plain batter with NO BREAD CRUMBS THEY ARE HORRIBLE....

Yes another tip for yanquis in England - there is open HATRED of American foreign policy and I won't tell you there isn't. Don't mistake this for dislike of Americans ...
My wife works in a big office and they just ranted for the first 3 months about US imperialism and torturing etc blah blah blah and then let it drop when they realised she had the same opinion about W as them...

AND here is the biggy - don't undertake on motorways - that is 'pass on the inside lane' (on the left)... I know it's done a lot around London by slick young 'achievers ' but most Police forces will tazer you first and waterboard you later...
Americans just don't see why its a big deal. I prefer the U.S. system of going in any lane you like as long as that is the rule. But its homicidal here as people expect to pull back into a lane to the left without checking it as nobody is supposed to be 'undertaking' on the left.
remember - right is overtakers, left is undertakers - literally

Our electric lights are down for on and up for off (the opposite)
Our water is hot left cold right (opposite)
etc etc...someone in 1776 must have made a concious effort to make everything opposite

oh and we use toilet brushes as we are still somewhat Victorian about that sort of thing don't you know- in Wisconsin I have seen em sold as 'European toilet brushes'...

and please don't put your passport in your 'fanny pack' - if you do then put it in a plastic bag first and be prepared for a drug squad search when you try and retrieve it at Heathrow... somebody else can explain... ...

Only danger is that someone might take it seriously and get themselves in a bad situation...
Is there a proper guide rather than the London-centric stuff about pearly queens and jellied eals and cockney slang - they sound like everyone in the UK uses foul language all the time and they all seem to be written by student drop-outs who think that being dirty in habits and language makes them sound cool...

A proper guide would include such essentials and always buy fish and chips from a traditional fish and chip shop which fries in beef dripping - all Chinese fish and chip shops fry in the same soggy oil they use for spring rolls etc ...

I actually threw the Chinese version away it was so horrible - and I am such a tightwad that they would have to be bad for me to do that.

First American boss I had gave a 3 quid tip with the first beer - I told him we never tip for beer and wait for the 1 penny change. He said if he did that in the U.S. he wouldnt get served all night...

a post with real advice would be useful

So! Holy cow! The hubby's interview is this Monday, 5 November! Our packet 3 arrived at the embassy on 15 October (special delivery) and we received the interview letter yesterday only one week in advance! Isn't that crazy? Thankfully we've been able to get the day off work even though normally we're supposed to request it at least one week in advance.

I'm really nervous about how it's going to go. I mean, I know the worst that would happen is that there's some confusion and we have to go home and send more info by post, but I really don't want to have to do that. And I hear so many scary stories about how mean they can be and how poorly trained some of them seem to be!

Also, is it true that I'm not technically supposed to go into the embassy? Has any USC recently had trouble going into the embassy with their spouse on the interview day?

BIG CONGRATS !!!!
it's the day we fly...
there is a sign outside saying applicants only ....its at the security hut.. but its worth an ask - if you tell em its re spouse visa
anyway good on ya ! I reckon their schedule is a mess because of the mail strikes and they are slotting people in where they can

That's a great account..

I have come to the conclusion that the interview is part of the medical and they are testing to see if we are secretly violent psychos by goading us with this traffic warden little hitler stuff - well done for maintaining your aplomb

Anyway look out for that visa in the morning cos mine came next working day and not the 3 to 5 they talk about. Even the couriers stuck with that story.

It's a pity they don't have bank style speakers on the windows cos I could not hear her with the pa in the background. When she was saying raise your right hand I thought she was on about the fingerprint thing again...

I was leaning right up against the glass with a weird intense expression with bulging eyes made worse by my mega magnification reading glasses. I think she thought I was going to bite her.

it's all a hoot in retrospect but not funny at the time... bit like getting born

ok back to the packing !

Postal strike was good for you hahaha
I am expecting my interview on November 9th but didnt get packet 4 yet?

if you havent got pckt 4 they must have told you over the phone yes ?

My dad was born on on november 9th and died 81 years later on november 9th so its a significant day for both of us....

seems like pckt 4 s come out first class mail and get stuck quite a few days in the strikes..

yeah really, thats scary. do we need the letter to get into the interview??

and how much is the fee at the embassy, since i still dont have the info? heh

i really cant figure out how people who got stuff in way after us have sooner interview dates, but maybe it has to do with the prefered travel date thing?
not that it matters we need a little time for him to wrap things up!

very good point - ask em for an email as an entry authorisation

I called the State Department today and they said my interview was set for 7th November at 8:30. kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif At least I will know what to do about the lease on my flat smile.gif . Hopefully I can just let it lapse because the renewal period is 6 months. I hope I get packet 3 before my medical so I can fill in the medical questionaire. I couldn't find one of those on VJ, just the checklist.

7th November is my 60th birthday and the anniversary of the Russian revolution and independance day for pakistan and india

excellent day - can't go wrong !

The medical questionnaire is a 60 second piece of cake - you say no to everything unless you have flesh eating ebola virus...

a bit like the ds-230 'have you ever been the commandant of a Nazi death camp or a FARQ guerrilla ' etc....

Congrats to all who are getting interview dates and glad the state dept thing is working for us...

We got back from Tenerife at 3am today and we are busy cleaning up our rented house here in England ready for landlord's inspection tomorrow.

We leave Thursday for the London interview on Friday. Hope the couriers deliver on a Saturday !

Also busy signing up blind for an apartment in Tampa and finalising purchase of my new 268 horse power wheels ! Good job global warming doesn't apply in the U.S.

If Friday is a refusal/disaster there will be a lot of back-tracking !

As soon as my head stops spinning I will update the interviews in October/November table

Can't wait to get to Florida and start my letters to the USCIS about the wrong kind of green card/wrong name etc which is bound to happen, and thats if its delivered to the correct address - i am a one drop in the glass type of person at the moment...

wait... extortion line for what??
We are just waiting for Packet 4 to come to tell us when the interview date is..

yes but willchels phoned them and got a date....

it was in the embassy schedule but they had not sent packet 4 yet

so if they tell you a date over the phone it will be a big relief..

washington has the same database so can tell you for peanuts

Okay, well he's already had his medical.. I'm not sure how that works if we dont have packet four but they did let him schedule and he went. .
anyways errr. i guess we'll hold off a bit, i noticed that 129F people seem to have to wait longer for dates by looking at people's signatures on here so i'm not overly concerned yet.
however if something is wrong i want to fix it asap as id really like to get him over here for the holidays sad.gif

call extortion line in london or this number for dept of state in washington (cheap) 1-202-663-1225

dollars per brain cell saved through worry is very low either way

That's true but they were gracious to move the interview to the 10th due to some other circumstances. Cheers!

That's good shows they listen to people when they make special requests for a good reason

Yes we got a couple of weeks lopped off at K1 time a couple of years ago when Carolyn had a worrying medical condition..

So they obviously care and do the work necessary to accommodate people with timing problems and it's a pity their dismissive email replies and super expensive help line give the impression that they are the opposite...

They should improve their 'front end' PR so people know they are nice people after all...
