Bill, Not sure where you are traveling from, yet here is the way I just did it and it was fairly inexpensive. Thanks Steve, that is very helpful! I usually fly from Philadelphia through Miami or Ft Lauderdale via Delta, US Air/Avianca or American. American is my preferred carrier although there are certain times of year when their fares go through the roof. I have most of my frequent flyer miles with them.



Steve, thanks for the tip. I understand how to fax packet 3 to the embassy, but I don't know if I should fax ONLY Margarita's DS230, or her daughter's also. The woman on the phone told me that I only need to send Margarita's ds230, but she also told me that Daniela (the 8 year old daughter) needs to attend the interview. I read on the embassy site that a child under 14 years of age that is listed under his/her parent on the same petition is not required to attend the interview. I don't trust what the woman on the phone told me.

Congratulations Steve and Sandy! Packet 3 has been sent from Bogota to Margarita! smile.gif I made the $16 phone call today, and I am more confused now than I was before. Margarita's 8 year old daughter, Daniela, is listed on the same petition as Margarita. From what I understand from the Embassy website, Daniela does not need to go to the interview. During the phone conversation with the Emassy, I asked if I need to send Daniela's DS230 and passport copy when we send in packet 3. The woman told me that we only need to send Margarita's ds230 but that Daniela needs to go to the interview. I am really confused. I asked the woman again and told her that Daniela is only 8 and that she is listed on the same petition as Margarita. The woman told me that all children must attend the interview. Does an 8 year old really need to go to the interview if she is listed on her mother's petition? I don't mind bringing her with, but I thought she is not required to go.

Does anyone know how long the K1 visa is valid? I have read both 4 and 6 months. This may seem wierd, but Margarita and I don't want her and her daughter, Daniela, to arrive in the US until October or November. My work is crazy in the summer and fall (7 days a week sometimes as many as 90 hours). We think it would be best that they arrive here when I have much more time to help them adjust.

I am ready to file for naturalization (I completed the 3 years -minus the 90 days- on march 15). My problem is that I have 3 sons (16, 12, 10 yrs old), I did apply for their removal of conditions back on August 2009, I got the 16 yrs old non restriction green card and the 10 yrs old one before the end of the year.
After a lot of frustration and calls (and not 1 nor 2 BUT 3 biometrics appointments) the case of the 12 yrs old STILL in the air, nobody know why or how this happend (last time we called one of the women we talk to said that if I was the mother and I been approved -for removal of conditions- since more than a year now, she didnt understand why the 12 yrs old wasnt approved...

If someone has gone thru the same, I want to know if it is okay for me to submit the naturalization papers even if I dont have the approval/green card for my middle son. Or I should wait.

I am so frustrated...

not sure about everybody else BUT in our case, I have always send the paperwork thru usps to the "normal" add even though it has always went express because we ask for confirmation delivery (for peace of mind).. and this last time it was no exception, we mailed papers to the lockbox, sent express. In the past, they have never said anything and this last time, they just cashed my check so I am assuming it was the ok add... the word "courier deliveries" has always stopped us from sending to that alternative office or whatever it is...

(just my experience)

not sure if my answer is valid, husband is just telling me we send it priority mail with delivery confirmation..

so sorry.. I guess..

She told me they will take my green card the day of the oath and that I am not supposed to use my El Salvador passport anymore after that date... but the US one (once I get it)

no, she told me the passport was my property (actually I think is government -country I was born- property)
but she told me once I take the oath I cannot use it..
supposedly, you have to give up the other citizenship (I think when you take the oath you promise you will only be loyal to the USA... and so)
I dont think they force people but is like implied that you cant keep both
(although at least in my country the only way they will take my birth citizenship is if I write a letter to the gov and tell them I no longer want to have it... )
I have heard of people keeping both, I guess is just a matter of "if you want to follow the rules, you should give it up but nobody will force you to do it or ask you or your old government and check if you really kept just the US citizenship)
I assume in the end if you want to be "loyal" to the US oath, you must give it up.. I personally think it is in each person conscience...

I had my appointment today and was a bit anxious but specially since yesterday election that I could get a nasty officer (sorry but there are some out there) that will ask me about the new people just elected (even if the old ones I knew were still the ones until next year)..
anyways to make it short, I arrived 15 mins early (because they say not more than 30 mins before), and at least 5 people that arrived AFTER me went BEFORE me..
I was starting to wonder why when a woman ask one of the officers why her appointment was at 11am (like mine) and she was seeing people that arrived after her going in.. it was around 11:45am at that time... so the officer told the woman she just called few seconds before and went to the place you drop the appointment notice and check it and told the woman her papers were no longer there so it must be that some officer was just preparing to call her to the interview, to keep on waiting...
anyways, when they called me, it was this woman that was all smiles. After she made me sore I would tell the truth, she started to ask me questions about my name,birthday, address and such (personal info she had on my application). then she ask me where was my ex husband (but she didnt ask me like that, she just said and where leaves A...(just the first name) -and since my oldest son has same name I answer "he lives at home with us"... after opening her eyes big she realized that we WERENT talking about the same person, I was talking about my son and she was asking about my ex... she did mention EX.. and so I told her!!).
she ask me to give her the green card, my drivers license, and my passport. She ask me too if I wanted to change my name.

then she ask me if I was ready for the test and I said noooooooo, made her laugh (I wasn't trying to!) but quickly said yes I am..
so she ask me (not sure if the questions pop up at random, she was reading her computer screen):
1) there are 4 amendments to the constitution about who can vote, describe one of them
2) how old do citizens have to be in order to vote
3) what is one reason colonists came to America
4) who is in charge of the executive branch
5) During the cold war, what was the main concern of the US
6) I don't remember if it was #6 or #51, but my answer was freedom of religion..

and then she stop and said you pass the US history and government test.

she then show me a paper and circle option number 1 (didn't really read the other 2 questions), she told me to read it
it said something like:
which state is the one that has the biggest population?

after I read it she hand me a second paper and told me to write:
"California has the biggest population"

and then she said you are done! you pass the English and US history and government tests...
then she started asking me all the questions they ask you when you file (do you belong to the communist party, political organization, blablabla), and she made me sign what they tell you NOT to sign at the time you file...

then she told me if I had other pictures, I said yes and give them to her, she ask me which of the two I preferred, I said it didn't matter so she choose them for me, and told me to sign them on the side.
then she ask me if I had other papers or new ones I haven't send them, I said, nopes its all the same... so she didn't took any papers...

then she ask me random questions about my sons (school and so) and if I had a child with my husband now (if he was the same person since the beginning of the process), then she ask me how I enter the country (I said K1 visa), she ask me how I met my husband and if he was waiting outside..

I think that is all,
and then she game a paper (N-652 Naturalization Interview Results) and told me Congrats, your application has been recommended for approval, that in a month or so I will get a letter in the mail, that I am not a citizen until the oath day, and that then they will take my green card but leave my passport because is mine BUT I cannot use it anymore because with the naturalization certificate I had to go get an American passport and travel with that.

Not sure how long it took but must have been some 10 mins or so...

In overall I think I was lucky to get a nice officer (and do think the questions were the easy ones.. thankfully!!!)

I finally decided to apply for my passport and my 3 sons passports..
after making all the paperwork (similar to the packs I used to send for all this immigration thing), cover letter, and blabla
I follow the instructions that Department of State gives (one check per application), I went to the post office (milwaukee) and I should have known things would go south when the woman said WE OPEN UNTIL 10am!!
I looked at the sign and was about to point at it when another employee tells her we do accept passports at 9am, the woman argued with the dude and was telling him IT IS SAT... and she just stopped and said opps it is thrusday..
I should just have turned away in that instant BUT NO.. i gave her the paperwork, and she said THIS IS TOO MUCH PAPERWORK, I try to explain to her, and she shut me up and said she was trying to figure things out... so I bite my tongue, when she finally ask me why there where copies I said because the original is on MY application.. after that she said the ID photocopy is missing, I just pointed it at her and she went ohh yeah here it is...
then when I ask for the OVERNIGHT fee so that it would be sent back to home in a safe way, she argued with me that that was EXPEDITE and that was the only way..
so I just dropped that too...
then she was arguing on the wording of the "sole custody" I tried explaining to her that since it was a translation it wouldnt say exactly how it would be said in one that is written in english to start with...
then she tells me $400 check in order to Department of State (2 adults, 2 kids), I ask her again, since it was 380$ and she argued that 110+110+80+80 WAS $400!!!! the other employee, told her hmmm NO it is not...
so she mumbled again...
of course I kept on saying "don't worry it is fine" with a smile that was really hurting me but decided it could only go worst if I fought with her...
then I ask how would i put the name and birth certificate on the checks (since they told me only one was needed -and when I read that DOS said clearly to put name and dob!!) she said,,, NOOOO that isn't important just put the dates of birth two by two and the names aren't needed....
*sighs*
and to top it all, once I came home, wishing I wouldn't have gone to that place...
I said MAN... i forgot to write on the 4 applications the height and weight of everyone!
GO ME! and I checked and rechecked everything and just failed to fill that...
I just CANT believe it...

just when I thought being a citizen wouldn't get me as much stress as being a resident...

We wanted to thank the VJ staff and all the lucky people that have made this website part of their journey.  We started our journey on February 17th of 2009. Our journey has taken 1538 days to reach the finish line and my wife is now a United States citizen!

 

In the beginning of our journey, we felt we were on an island by ourselves until VJ showed us the path to success.  VJ showed us we were not alone or unique!  The website provided us with answers, directions and techniques to fulfill our dreams from the beginning. 

 

Our Journey has not ended it has just began!

 

 

I want to thank my wife for her keeping her head up and the happiness she has brought into my life. I would also like to thank VJ staff and all the VJ members for allowing us to be a part of their life.

First of all dear for getting medical report there is no any kind of form.Your fiancee will have to send the packet 3.5 form filled to USEM islamabad.Then they will let u know when to get medical from their specific physcian.

Well the USEM of ISL emailed me on monday telling me the interview date (they scanned the interview letter), I guess we have to wait for him to get the hard copy? He lives in AFghanistan and calculating the amount of days it took for him to receive the 3.5 packet is 10 days. Also with the elections coming up, it gets pretty hectic. I want to know if it is ok for him to call one of the physicians now to make an appointment even if he doesn't have the medical form

There is no medical form. you will need your interview letter when you go for the medical.. you said that USEM emailed you a letter, Just print that out and set up an appointment with one of the approved physicians. Follow this Link below for medical exam and how to about getting one done

Kiran just called with the good news. She was approved for K1 visa this morning. and was told that she will get the passport back within 2 weeks (NO AP)..
Interview: Lady counselor asked just one question: how did you meet? and congratulated Kiran on the visa. WOW

Kiran made an observation that the couselor was attaching the passport with our file as she asked the question.. Which makes me wonder if the decision was already made.........

No other proof of relationship was asked for. Didnt ask for photos either. She was out of the embassy by 10:30AM.

I think we got lucky here. Dont expect all the interviews to go like this.. Be prepared and have sufficient proof to go along.

Thank you for your responses. Infact, I did call last night after staying up late as they only answer phones between 12:30 and 3:30 PM Pakistand time. I was surprised to get in touch with live person in about 3 minutes. They did send the packet 3 to my Finance via CTS courier on April 8th, but she never got it. They will send another one today.

NVC sent my K1 package to Islamabad on Mar 31st, but My Fiance still have not received packet 3 information o submit documents.. It has been five weeks. I am wondering how long has it taken for you guys to receive initial packet once it has been sent to Islamabad? Should I contact the embassy?

What carrier have you used from the US to send documents to your beneficiaries in Pakistan? My fiance lives in Mirpurkhas, Sindh . it is moderate size city. I am not sure if I should use Fed Ex , DHL or another option? I would appreicate any feedback. Does Amex work from US as well?


Another questions: so my case arrived in Islamabad last week. I wonder what post method does emabassy in Islamabad uses to send packet 3? Is it regular mail or Amex?

Perhaps you need to do like I do and just tell her now and again, "ok, I need a hug now!" :)

Women love flattery too, usually. Tell her how it makes you feel all amazing, like you described earlier, when she hugs you, or tell her something like you dream of her just coming up an hugging you for no reason, and how it would just make your day, etc. Usually women do like to please, so she might do more if you told her how much you like it.

I think its real tuff for someone that hasnt grown up with it. My hubby is still working on random hugs, he forgets a lot and its been over a year now.

Also with women, its tough, becuz sometimes they think if they initiate anything like this, it will lead to sex, and they dont always want that to happen. So they liken any affection to this end. This is a real prob with my hubby, especially in the beginning, I think he thot every time I smiled at him he thot I "wanted" something. Good grief! I wanted some affection. Men blur these lines alot, especially in households where they grew up with no affection, so its no wonder women are scared to hug or kiss.

Hope this mite help a bit.

About the flattery I am not really sure, I thought she liked it too, but she has categorically stated that it is weird when I am too lovey-dovey or when I talk in the way when I was explaining how amazing I feel when with her....And she didnt just say it, most of the times when I am vocal about my feelings for her, she like clams up and gets all weird, and acts like she doesnt liket alking about that stuff....so I really dunno about what to do......

But thanks for all the advice and I really hope some of this asking her to do it really works.....

But then again, she is in the US now and I am here, so I guess it will all have to wait, although a few kisses and some affectionf rom her on IM/phone wont hurt :)

I'm a little surprised to hear your fiance, who grew up in this country, is having such a hard time displaying affection. I've found the Indian girls who were brought up here are pretty comfortable with the opposite sex and a lot of them have been dating since high-school. I don't know how much time you have spent with your fiancee, but she may just need to get to know you a bit better before she feels comfortable expressing her affection in the manner you are looking for. She may also be a naturally shy and reserved person. I think you will find she will slowly grow more comfortable with you after you are married and begin sharing your life together.

I can share a little of my own experiences. I was also brought up in the US and married a girl in India. Even though she came from a fairly traditional Brahmin family, she had grown up in Dubai and had gone to college and grad school in the US, so she was a little more open-minded. We got engaged after a brief courtship and having only spent a week together. Initially, we were both a little shy with each other, but after I returned to the US we began talking over the phone and chatting online pretty frequently. As we became more comfortable with each other and our feelings grew, we began to flirt and express our affection for one another. Initially, she was a bit more shy, but I could tell she enjoyed the attention and she slowly began to reciprocate more. By the time we came together for the wedding, we felt very comfortable together and had no trouble expressing our affection physically.

Well, I hope things work out for you with your fiancee. Just continue to remind her of your love for her and encourage her to demonstrate her affection. Wish you all the best!

I can't say for sure, but it sounds like good news. It sounds like they didn't keep his passport, so obviously they would need it to issue the K1 visa.

Yo te aconsejo que te des la pela y te quedes unos dias mas en Bogota despues del 11 ya que si la recibes en Bogota se demora como 3 dias habiles, en cambio si te vienes pa Cali se te demora de 8 a 10 dias habiles...yo pienso hacer lo mismo para cuando vaya a la embajada y traerme el pasaporte con la visa en una caja fuerte acostado en las sillas de un coomotor o un bolivariano.
Si mi pana..mejor esperate unos dias mas en tabogo para que de una ves vengas a Cali con la visa y asi ya arreglen las maletas con karol.

Para aquellas personas que todavia no han ido a Bogota al examen fisico, les recomiendo mucho que escogan la doctora Gonzalez. Bueno, solo queria compartir eso con aquellas personas que todavia no han pedido sus citas medicas.

Si todo transcurre sin problemas estaremos regresando jumtos a EU este proximo lunes o martes (no he comprado pasajes hasta que tengamos los pasaportes y visa en mano (segun Domesa dentro de los proximos 4 dias).

Felicitaciones a Paulis por su visa. En verdad me dio pena ver como a algunas personas le regresaban sus pasaportes y se iban tristes. Les deseo toda la suerte a aquellos que aun faltan para que llegue ese dia. La mayoria de las preguntas que hacen es para verificar que existe una relacion real y cuando el novio/novia acompanan pues parece acelar el tiempo de la entrevista aunque no creo que sea lo mas importante en la decision de la aprobacion.

Bueno luego les sigo escribiendo y estare en contacto para ayudar con informacion a los paisanos que estan en este proceso. Yo he recibido mucha ayuda de todos en este foro y quiero pagar la ayuda ayudando a otros. Nuevamente muchas gracias y suerte a todos los que inician una nueva vida en los EU con la persona que aman.

Saben que lejos es la oficina de Dra Gonzalez y el labrotorio de el apto? Me imagino que vamos a tener que llevar taxi, pero Margara ni yo estamos familiar con Bogota.

No creo que la embajada pida un tamaño especifico. Mi amor tiene todas las fotos 4x6 (medida en pulgadas) y las ultimas que voy a mandar tambien tienen la misma medida. Mira, cuando yo inicie este proceso, yo mande todas las fotos imprimidas en papel regular de carta y USCIS ni si quiera nos dio un RFE. Yo lo hice asi para poder escribir debajo de las fotos una descripcion del lugar y la situacion de cada foto. Asi que no te preocupes por el tamaño de las fotos.

En el paquete 3, dice que el registro civil, fe de bautizo, y certificado judicial deben de estar reciente. Me podrian decir que es reciente? Es que tambien dice el paquete que uno tiene que tener todo listo antes que mandar las cosas a la embajada a pedir la entrevista. Entonces, mi Margara ya tiene su registro civil, fe de bautizo, y certificado judicial. Ella las saco en Febrero y nuestra cita en la embajada es el dia 11 de Abril. No se si Margara tiene que sacar otras mas reciente. Que opinan?

No he visto DS-230 en español, pero apenas lo tengo en ingles. Por lo que yo entiendo, ellos estan pediendo el nombre de su esposo de Patty. Entonces yo creo la respuesta es NA porque ella no tiene esposo. Tambien 21a y 21b deben de estar lomismo. Una persona casada no puede pedir visa K1.

Voy a comprar los boletos para Margara y Dani de Avianca. Ellas tienen que viajar de Medellin a Bogota. Quiero comprar los por internet. Si los compro por internet, no tengo que perder lo que me cobran por el envio cuando mando plata a Margara. Margara no ha viajado mucho, y no sabe como lo hacen en Colombia. Hay "etickets" en Colombia que son parecidos a los de EEUU? Si los compro por internet, mis nenas solo mostran sus cedulas en el aereopuerto? Si alguien sabe, porfis ayudame a entender

Otra cosita, en el cuestionario DS-230 y en la pregunta 14 donde piden "Nombre del Cónyuge (Apellidos de soltera)" no sabemos que poner pues la pregunta es muy ambigua. Mi amor estuvo casada una vez y ahora esta divorciada. No creo que esten preguntando los datos del señor que estuvo casado con ella, pues mas estupidamente luego en la pregunta 21a, quieren saber si la personal mencionada en la pregunta 14 la va a acompañar a los EE.UU. De seguro les digo que NO nos va a acompañar. Jejeje! Tambien hacen similar pregunta en la 21b. ¿Alguien por aqui podria ayudar a aclarar estas preguntas? No creo que la embajada este disponible a hacer aclaraciones a preguntas tan ambiguas y fuera de sentido común come estas.

No he visto DS-230 en español, pero apenas lo tengo en ingles. Por lo que yo entiendo, ellos estan pediendo el nombre de su esposo de Patty. Entonces yo creo la respuesta es NA porque ella no tiene esposo. Tambien 21a y 21b deben de estar lomismo. Una persona casada no puede pedir visa K1.

Wow, estaba leyendo el foro en ingles y encontre un caso parecido a lo que queriamos hacer mi amor y yo. Primero que todo, dejeme decirles que la NOA2 esta aprovada por solo un periodo de tiempo y despues de este tiempo no sera VALIDA. En mi NOA2, este periodo es desde 2-22-2008 (Feb.22) hasta 6-21-2008 (Jun.21).

Yo se que todos queremos reunirnos lo mas pronto posible, pero en nuestro caso hay muchas cosas que dejar arregladas en Colombia y en los EE.UU. Ademas, YO no puedo salir de mi trabajo sin darle tiempo a mi jefe para decidir estas vacaciones que me voy a tomar para hacer todo esto.

Me gustaria saber las opiniones de Uds. y gracias.



El caso mio es como el tuyo. No quieremos que Margara y Dani llegan a US hasta Octubre o Noviembre. La fecha en NOA2 es cuando venca la oportunidad de tener la entrevista en la embajada. La Visa es valida por 180 dias . Entonces, si quieren hacer el viaje en Septiembre, la entrevista debe de estar despues que Marzo. Si tu novia manda paquete 3 de una vez, la entrevista no seria antes que Mayo, y la visa sera valido hasta que Noviembre.

A ver, lo de llenar los formularios por computador no es obligatorio, lo que ellos no quieren es tener que adivinar informacion. Si ud tiene letra bien bonita entonces hagalo a mano, con letras mayusculas y tinta negra. De todas formas, es preferible hacer el esfuerzo por llenar los formularios por computador.

Lo del DS230 parte 2, yo le voy a decir a mi novia que lo lleve por si las moscas. Nada se pierde.

Margarita Maria, yo le llene todos los formularios a mi novia desde aca y se los mande a Cali, asi estoy seguro que todo esta completo y que no hay respuestas en blanco.

No se estresen, que la verdad el proceso es sencillo, sino que con tantas ancias de no embarrarla lo hacemos un poco complicado.

De todos modos yo aconsejaria que lo hiciera por computadora todos con LETRAS GRANDES Y ASI. Si no lo puedes hacer por computadoras de todos modos todo lo que escriba a mano lo HARIA ASI CON ESTE TIPO DE LETRAS (TODAS MAYUSCULAS) Y PARECIDAS a ESTAS.

hola! not e precupes el mismo formato dice que se conteste en maquina de escribir o letra legible, yo envie los mios asi y ya me llego mi paquete numero 4, eso si hay que tratar de que la letra sea clara al leer para no generar confusion en las respuestas que diste, pero no te preocupes por eso.

si quieres estar mas tranquila dile a tu novio que llame NVC en usa, a el le dan el dia de tu cita, yo envie mi paquete numero 3 el lunes febrero 18 y mi novio llamo el miercoles 27 de febrero y alla le dijeron mi fecha de entrevista y el sabado 1 de marzo me llego mi paquete numero 4 con la fecha de entrevista que ya sabia porque a mi novio ya se la habian dicho, asi que como se como te sientes en este momento........con mucha ansiedad....... dile a tu novio que llame asi sales de la duda y te preparas para la cita. cualquier duda y en lo que te pueda ayudar con mucho gusto.

Hoy llame DOS y me dijeron que Margarita tiene su cita el dia 11 de Abril. Estoy SUPER feliz. Ya llame a pedir el apartamento en Bogota. Voy a Bogota el dia 8 y Margarita y Daniela van de Medellin a Bogota el mismo dia. Me van a esperar en aereopuerto y de alli nos vamos a el apto. En este momento Margara esta pediendo su cita con Dra Gonzalez por el dia 9. Margara va a ir el Labrotorio en la manana el dia 9 y ojala al doctora con Daniela en la tarde. El dia 9, vamos a reclamar su reporte migratorio de DAS y consignar la plata en el banco. Si todo este bien, el dia 10 vamos a divirtirnos. Por favor dime si todo suena bien, y si saben de un lugar chevere a irnos el dia 10 que ojala sera dia libre.

Aunque desde el viernes pasaso sabia que la visa esta aprovada pues USCIS me mando un correo electronico con la aprovación, hoy es el dia oficial donde recibí la NOA2 por correo ordinario, la aprovación oficial y escrita por USCIS. Yo llame esta tarde al NVC, pero todavia la visa no ha llegado o no esta registrada en el sistema de la NVC.

Lo que aprobó el USCIS fué su petición, no la visa. La visa la aprueba el cónsul en la embajada en Bogotá el día de su cita.

Gracias Diana por correjir mi vocabulario, pero es que para el caso es lo mismo visa o peticion en el lenguaje de la calle visa o peticion son palabras intercambiables. Pero, si le queremos llamar correctamete y mas tecnicamente a las cosas, diriamos que la peticion K-1 de visa para fiance(e) no ha llegado todavia a NVC.



Gracias Diana. Este foro no es la calle. Este foro es para las personas que quieren aprender como son las cosas en el proceso de lograr una visa. Entonces, gracias a dios que tenemos personas aca como Diana que saben como son las cosas. Tenemos que llamar las cosas correctamente y tecnicamente porque sino, se confundan la gente que van a leer este foro en el futuro. Todos los formularios de las agencias tienen que ser llenados correctamente, no que "casi asi" Cuando una habla con USCIS, NVC, o la Embajada, no hay palabras intercambiables.
