US Citizenship General DiscussionI'm having my interview in a couple of days!!
QUOTE (Katlady413 @ Jun 2 2008, 03:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Thank you so much, I feel much more relieved now! smile.gif Although *sigh* it's a pain to print all the documents again.. I'm going to do it though, don't want to risk it.

By the way, by being sworn in, do you mean you have to take the oath? I thought that was much later..

First of all "multa bafta" smile.gif
Don't be scared, don't be afraid, just be relaxed as they will pick up any negative vibes and use them against you (my IO was like that)
I personally didn't take anything with me except what it was asking for on the interview letter : my original notice from selective service registration, my green card and my passport...that was it... They asked me some personal questions but that on "unofficial level"
By "sworn in" he ment that you'll have to say the truth and only but the truth -the same as you would go in court as a witness or so- not the acctual oath ceremony for your citizenship star_smile.gif

Cool, you already got your oath letter... I'm still waiting mine crying.gif

Well, you have 90 days to wait..if you don't get the oath letter in 90 days since the interview, call them and schedule infopass appt. They will look into it!
Good luck!!!

can anyone tell me what did you take along at the oath ceremony?
I had a traffic violation for "following 2 close" plea no contest and paid the fine...should I take that?
Thank you very much

Smartie it all depends on the center where you are sending in the papers and also on the local office...look at Baltimore, they are taking the oath there the same day w/ the interview...isn't that great? I understand that the processing at the national centers are way better now compared to 9 months ago...it is up to the local offices to catch up...Good luck to you!

Crorona - CONGRATULATIONS!

Gaviria00- sorry to hear that... I've noticed from the other postings on this website that California was one of the most affected of the huge amount of applications, so they are working hard to stay within the promissed time frames... It's been and it still is a game of patience for all of us...

WOW Denise... I wish you good luck...
Have you called anyone? Try calling USCIS at thei 1-800 number...they know more than they are saying they do...for example when I check my status on line it says the same thing since October...when I called the 1-800 number it says the same thing from the website "case received oct and pending...our operators don't have any more info" but when I called them, they put me on hold for 1 min and then they were able to check their system where it was saying that I was reffered for approval...so CALL THEM!

I wish you all the best!

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400: August Filers
So I called my local office on Monday, there was no way to get thru the automated line ...tried to press other keys except for the ones mentioned in the recorded message..got to the line of an employee that was saying that he is out of the office, returning on Wednesday....so I waited until today and no answer at all this time...so I called the main USCIS line and I was told that my case shows up in their system with the following facts : I passed the test and that I have been recommended for approval...also he told me that Milwaukee does not offer the possibility of taking the oath right the day of the interview and also it takes 30 to 9o days for my case to be re-re-reviewed and I should contact them again if there is no NOA within 90 days from the interview...I tahnk the kind person for taking their time with me(and giving me such a bad news- of course I haven't said it on the phone) and now I am just amazed once again with the slow motion of the system...since I've been waiting since August, and I passed the test and as I meet all the criteria...why in the workd do they need another 90 days to re-review my case? I don't understand that..it's just out of my comprehension power!!!!
Over and out! Good luck to all you others in my situation..I feel my ship has sunk..deep deep in the ocean..and I won't be able to get my princess anymore...

Thank you Crorona! Good luck to you at the interview on the 20th! I hope you are among the lucky ones that will take the oath the same day you pass the citizenship test..and that you don't have to wait months like me...
As soon as I have an answer on Monday from my local office I will post it here!

Have a nice rest of the week-end

Well. My wife faxed in the documents requesting the interview along with a simple cover sheet. She will be dropping it off at Servientrega after lunch.

What is the best way to find out the interview date? I know they publish a list on the 20th, but how soon will NVC know about the interview? Do I just call the same main phone number at NVC or do would it be better to call this "Visa Office" I've heard about?

Thanks for all the help.

hi everyone, we just got the good news.... VISA APPROVED!!!! We are going to go celebrate, but Monday I'll report how everything went at the embassy.

Hi everyone. I have my bags all packed, and I'm ready to leave for Bogota! I leave the house at 5:30 tomorrow morning. Margara and Daniela are flying in from Medellin, and our flights arrive at the same time. Lab, doctor, DAS to pickup migratory report, and pay for the visas on Wednesday. Friday is the interview. Thanks for all of the help. This site and the great people here really helped me. I'll report back Friday afternoon with the good news

WOW!!!!!! Congrats to Faith and Argentes. I have been traveling alot and not been in cnnecton with the goings on here. Lot's of exciting news!!!
Paola is leaving this Monday the 17th to return to Colombia for a month. We had the DNA test done, called for another interview date for her son. It is Monday March 31!!! Paola is going down to attend the intewrview with her son and bring him back to the US.
I am a bit worried that she will have problems re-entering the US, given all the hassels that can come up. She has her travel doc's and everything else needed to re-enter the US. There should not be a problem. I am going to miss her badly while she is gone. She will return on April 22.

Hi Buck,

I am glad that Paola will be finalizing the issue with her son. This must have been emotionally distressing for her. Carina and I have started to worry about her 19 year old son also because of your experience. We have our interview on the 31st as well, so I hope that we will run into Paola.

Best of Luck,

Hi everyone,
In the packet 3 that was sent to Margarita (in spanish), it says that her birth certificate, baptismal certificate, and police report need to be recent. It also say that one should have all documents ready before sending packet 3 back to the embassy. We followed those instructions, and have our interview for April 11. How recent do these documents need to be? On the date of the interview, her documents will be in the range of 60 to 80 days old. People at the DAS office have Mrgarita worried that her documents will not be recent enough for the embassy. I don't know what to think. Any insight is appreciated

thanks

john

I do not think the age of Margarita's documents will be a problem. Bella's documents were all older than Margarita's. I would not be concerned about what DAS says about the age of the documents required for the interview.

On the other hand, DAS does dictate how recent the father's permission letter for the children to leave Colombia needs to be and if your letter does not meet that requirement you will have problems at the airport.

Thanks Bill.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and thanks to everyone here, especially the Colombia club thread. I have saved a lot of time and learned quite a few tips.
I was wondering if someone here who has gone thru the K-3 route in Colombia could give me some advice.
I have been planning to send out my I-129F, after receiving the NOA1 on my I-130 petition, which I just received. But there still are a couple of things that I'm not sure about.

I am considering not filing the I-129F and just letting the I-130(CR-1) go thru on it's own (since it would save a few steps). In Colombia is this a good strategy? Or should I stick to the original plan and go ahead and file the I-129F ? My main goal is to be with my wife as soon as possible. I'm not worried about her getting her SS# right away, it would be nice, but definitely not worth an additional delay.

I made 1 mistake, I sent in scanned copies of my wife's G-325A's not the originals. I had an original set of her G-325A's when I left Colombia, but unfortunately after I arrived here, I realized that I had left out some info and her form wasn't filled out right, my mistake. The originals are on their way and should be here by the end of the week. I already received my NOA1, so am I in the clear now or should I still be expecting a RFE ?

I received my NOA1 but no transfer notice. Is this all I will need to file the I-129F or should I wait for the transfer notice, before I proceed?
I sent my I-130 petition out on 2/22/08 and my NOA1 date was 3/3/08, that's just over a week! I hope the other service centers don't hear about this, as I'm sure a reprimand will be handed out to the person who is working on my case, for being too efficient... (they must be new).

Thanks

Hi everyone,
When you have traveled to Colombia in the past, how and where do you exchange currency? I normally send money to Margara Western Union. I don't want her to travel with such a large ammount of money on her. This trip will require much more money than previous trips, what with the doctor and visas and vaccinations. I would prefer to bring it myself. On previous trips, I noticed a currency exchange at the airport in Miami. Is anyone familiar with these airport currency exchanges? I have a feeling they might charge large fees. Worst case I will just send her the money and we can pick it up together in Bogota.

Thanks

john

John
I suggest using an ATM machine in Bogota. The exchange rate is best here. The airport will not give you the current exchange rate, they make money on every transaction. The atm's are very convienent. Just be aware, your bank will most likely charge an "international transaction fee". Check with your bank ahead of time. Also it is best to inform them where you are traveling to and timeframe. Some credit / debit cards get shut off when used in other countries, as a security measure!!!!

Thanks eveyone. I will call my bank today to check the fees. ATM sounds like a great idea.

Hi everyone,
Here is my plan. Please let me know if you think I am missing anything or if something doesn't sound like a good idea. Tuesday April 8 John flies to Bogota from US, and Margarita and Daniela fly to Bogota from Medellin. Meet at the airport and go to the apartment. Wednesday Margarita goes to the lab at 7 am. After the lab, go to DAS to pickup Migratorio report (she ordered it at the DAS office in Medellin and it is ready for pickup in Bogota). Lunch, and if time allows pay for the Visas at the bank. Both Margara and Dani go to doctor Gonzalez in the afternoon. Assuming no problems, Thursday is a day of fun. In the event of some unforeseen problem, Thursday is available to remedy the problem. Friday morning the interview. Friday evening celebrate (hopefully). Also, does anyone have any ideas for a fun day Thursday or Saturday? Something fun for the whole family. Daniela is 8 years old and loves rides. Margara and I are both unfamiliar with Bogota, but I'd love for the 3 of us to go to a theme park if there is one there.

thanks

john

Salitre Mágico is a great place to take an 8 year-old child. You can also try the Tren Turístico on Saturday that leaves early from Bogotá to go to a small town to spend the day and then it comes back in the afternoon. It's really fun and you have a choice of different routes to go on. Here's their info:

Dirección: Estación de la Sabana, Calle 13 No. 18-24, (Estación de Usaquen, Calle 110 con Carrera 10), BOGOTá
Teléfono: (57) 1 257 1459

Hi everyone,
I have a kind of silly question. If I am going to the interview with my Margara,do I need to write a new letter of intent? I assume that my presence at the interview should demonstrate my intent, but I never know when it comes to this process. I have one more question. Do we need to bring a notarized letter signed by Daniela's father to the interview? I know we will need it when they leave Colombia, but I am not sure if the embassy requires it before they will grant Daniela a K3 visa. Margara and Daniela aren't coming to the US until October or November, so we will need to get a letter from Daniela's father in September either way.

thanks

waitman,

First of all...for us it was only necessary for Yenifer to get the vaccines that she did not have on her certificate of vaccinations. I think that was a first because Diana and her husband had a nightmare at Roa's office. Doctors were giving people some BS that if your vaccines were more than 8 days old you would have to do them again. Yenifer had the same doctor as Diana's husband and there was no problem...also the fee was CHEAPER than it was at the red cross...that was also a first!!!

Check out this post of the play by play in Bogota for us...

Thanks, Scott!

I feel better now. Looks like they don't require repeat shots then-- at least not always.

If she misses one and she has to get one that's much better than pumping your body with ten.

Best of Luck!

Good luck Bill. My Margara sent packet 3 to the embassy yesterday, via fax and servientrega. I will call NVC Wednesday night to see if they have our interview date. Bill,

I know that you're nerves are working on you...we were there not so long ago wacko.gif

Don't worry about the kids because there were kids from babies to teens at the embassy when we were there...

Also as far as the DS-156...the bank will have what you need and it will take all of 10 minutes to fill out so don't bother to stress about that.
(just be sure to fill out an extra copy for the embassy while you're there...1 for the bank and 1 for the embassy)

As I gather from your posts, and the help that you have given others (including Yenifer and I) here at Colombia Club, you are very well prepared and I know that you will have no problem... good.gif

Thanks Scott. smile.gif

I am not sure if it is a good idea to take the kids or not. On one hand I think they will have a very hard time denying us if I am standing there with the baby in my arms. On the other hand, if it turns out to be one of those days and the kids are a pain it could increase the stress level considerably.

Billy, just sticking my nose in (hopefully not where it doesn't belong). Margarita and I have been going back and forth on whether or not to bring Daniela with us. Daniela is 8 years old. We finally decided not to bring her with us. She would have to miss too much school and I too am scared of "one of those days". Good luck

Bill and John,

I don't know that it was different because we were going for a K-3, but Lorena and I went to the interview without the kids. While she was 'tentatively' approved that day, she was required to bring the boys to the embassy the following day to show the officer that the boys did, indeed, exist. Only then was she granted the visas. While it may be different with different folks - or different officers - you might give thought to taking the kids. It could mean saving another trip, especially if your SO doesn't live in Bogota and doesn't bring the kids along to Bogota the first go-round. Best of luck to you all!!!

Charles

Thanks for the heads up Charles. Margarita and Daniela live in Medellin, so it would be a huge burden to make another trip. I wish they would stick to what the instructions say. It clearly states that "children under 14 years of age who are not the beneficiaries of individual petitions do not have to come to the interview" I certainly do not doubt you Charles, but this is the type of nonsense that frustrates me so much. Even when you follow their instructions, you aren't guaranteed that you are doing the right thing.

Thanks for your response Scott.
l feel better, we already have so many paperwork to deal with so it´s ok that we don´t have to worry about this part.
Thank you.

Thanks for the info everyone. No mention of money will be made. Margarita told me today that the people at DAS told her that her certificado judicial is only valid for 30 days pertaining to leaving the country. It says on the form that it is valid for 1 year, but says nothign about leaving the country. Her certificado judicial, registro civil, and baptism form will all be dated about 60-80 days before the interview date. Will these be accepted by the embassy? If so,does Margarita need a new certificado judicial less than 30 days from the time she leaves Colombia? Are there any documents she will need at the airport in order to leave? I know she will need the visa, her passport, and the notarized letter from Daniela's dad giving her permision to leave. Thanks

So if anyone wants to get married before coming here, the CR1/IR1 visa is the way to go. Waiting less than 60 days to avoid the AOS fee and headache is worth it in my opinion, not to mention the getting a SS # hassle.

For me, I know the CR1 is hands down the best of the bunch, but all I cared about was getting my wife here quick. My attitude was the $1,000 was worth it for her to be here a month quicker. (It also let her know she was valued too. jeje)

Anyway, after I made the K3 decision I just quit reading. I was burnt out on reading about visas and doing paperwork. Now my question is: What are the SS# hassles and what are the other difficulties? Are there any surprises that I should know about? Is the AOS process really that bad?

I can 100% see how people wish they went K1. I know occasionally that bothered me seeing K1's get approved faster than K3's.

Hi Agentes
I couldn't agree more with you regarding $$$ Vs. having your honey here sooner, I checked around about the different types of visas and as you said, I stopped looking around, he's here with me and we didn’t have any problem in the process, we sent the AOS papers on Feb. 01. ( I hope things will go as good as the visa process did)
I think that as longest you have proofs (writing and pics) you shouldn't have any problems, we also have a plus in our process and that is that we had been married for 3 years, this means we won't have to go through the "remove of conditions" process.
I don't regret this process one bit, and I hope they won't take it away.\
Honestly I don't think its fear that as fiancé you get to have more privileges than an already husband/wife. I wish someone can give me a logic answer on this part.

Good luck to all.......

I am putting together my proof of on going relationship. Should I print all of my msn messenger conversations? I have been saving them since June, and it would total at more than 1,000 pages. I don't want to waste time printing so much, but if i is worthwhile, I will do it. I have phone records, money transfer records, many photos, emails, passport stamps, boarding passes, hotel receipts, engagement ring receipt, and receipts from flowers I sent. I was thinking maybe I should just print like 10 conversations form different dates. Any input is appreciated

thanks john

NVC Quagmire!

NVC has had our paperwork since the 11th of January. I have called twice a week to see if the paperwork has been forwarded to the embassy, and they keep telling me that it is in "Administrative Processing" and that this is normal, but there is no timeline for when it will be completed. I have thought all along that this was their canned answer.

Today, they said that not all paperwork goes through "Administrative Processing", but ours is. Again there is no timeframe for when this may be completed.

Until today, I thought this was a process that everyone went through and ours was only taking longer. Now it seems that ours is out of the ordinary and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me. We missed the February interviews and now I am concerned that we may miss the March interviews as well.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Cameron

Hi everyone. I sent an email to the embassy on Jan 28, and still haven't gotten a relpy. Has anyone gotten a reply from the embassy? How long does it usually take? thanks john

Cameron,

Some people will go through Administrative Processing for whatever reason they find. In most cases it means there was a red flag based on either the petitioner's or beneficiary's names. What they do is run whatever information they found through the FBI to make sure it comes back clean before sending the case to the embassy. Unfortunately, this process can take a while and you just have to keep calling them until they say you're out of "Administrative Processing".

Diana

Thanx Diana,

They had always told me that this is a normal process that everyone goes through until yesterday. I am normally the calm one, but this upset me yesterday. I continue to try to calm Carina, but she is about to freak out!! jajajajajaj We will continue to be patient. I am so thankful for everyone in this forum. It is only a little speed bump, but it is encouraging to have the experience of this forum to rely on and to calm the nerves!!

Hi Everyone, I am silent reader from last year. I have a question for those of you who have brought the children over with the parent on the visa. What was requested from you at the embassy?
Did they need the baptismal certificate? What about the DAS? We have a letter from the Colombian Embassy that we will have authorized in Bogota so the kids can leave. Any help would be great. The boys are 16 and 11.

I have not been through the process yet but maybe I can help. I have studied this a lot.

The children need:
  1. DS-156 (2 copies)
  2. DS-230 Part I
  3. 6 photos
  4. Passport
  5. Orignal or notarized copy of the birth certificate. Make sure that the notary's color stamps are on the copy.
  6. Original or authenticated copy of the baptism certificate with notas marginales (We obtained new ones from the church.)
  7. Judicial and prison records if they were ever arrested.
  8. If they are 18 or older a Colombian Judicial Police Report (Does not apply)
  9. If they are 16 or older and lived 6 months or more since attaining the age of 16 in another country (other than the US or Venezuela) they must have a police certificate from that country. The 6 months is cumulative. If they lived somewhere else for 4 months and then lived there again for 2 months they must obtain the police certificate. (Might apply to the 16 year old.)
  10. DAS Migratorio Certificate (maybe). I think if the oldest boy is 16 1/2 months old or older I would obtain one for him. This is the document they use to determine if a police certificate from another country is required. You do not need one for the younger child.
  11. Medical exam and lab tests
  12. Paid visa fee
  13. The 16 year old must attend the interview. The younger one does not need to attend but he can.
In addition, if there is a father on the birth certificates you must have a notarized letter from the father stating that he grants the child (children) permission to leave the country. This is enforced by DAS at the airport. The letter cannot be more than 60 days old on the day they leave the country. If the father is dead you will need a death certificate. If the father cannot be found, you will need proof of abandonment. I think that comes from ICBF. Maybe the letter from the Colombian embassy covers all of this. What does it say? Remember that the US embassy has nothing to do with this. You will want to make sure in advance that the documents will be accepted by DAS at the airport.

I hope this helps.

My fiance, Margarita, has a brother that lives in the US. He came here on a tourist visa 9 years ago,and he never left. He lives in Pensylvania, and I livein Wisconsin. Will this be a problem for us? Question 37 on the DS156 asks if she has family here, and what is there status. The answer will be working. We are too scared to lie about it. Any insite is appreciated. thanks

Byron, first of all, congratulations!! I read somewhere (I think on this site) that when you get married it is best to ask the minister or judge if you can take the license to wherever it is you take it. This way you can ask for a notarized copy right away, before it gets sent to some other office and you have to wait an aditional few weeks. here is the link http://www.visajourn...k2visa-aos.html item number 6.2.3
