Does anyone have any suggestions on shipping a few heavier items to the states for a reasonable cost? There's no hurry, it's mostly photos, papers, and books.

Thanks

What's up with that?

I think I'm going to spend every January in Thailand from now on, just got back and it's rather depressing.

Also, any thoughts on this, at the POE they always seem to ask "how many times have you been to Thailand"? what is that about?

Anybody know what the Thailand "ED" visa is?

Ed - Visa?

It's the educational visa that they offer through Thai language schools like Walen. I think it's 12 months

I have a general money changing situation. I need to bring a large amount in (sin sodt, engagement expenses, etc). What would be the best way to do this? Some combination of techniques? I'd wire the money to my fiance's account, but she's not in thailand yet and I would have no way of knowing if it gets there or not.

ThailandIs it Common for a Thai woman to be uncomfortable saying "I Love You"?
You'd be wise to take Anya's and Ning's advice. That's an excellent book to read, and will save you many headaches later on. 6 weeks is not enough time to understand Thai culture. 6 years probably isn't enough.

What I do understand is that I love you doesn't have the same emotional baggage or "seriousness" as it does in western culture. It's not the words that matter, it's the deeds I suppose.

Hey Aussie folks, I had a quick question and didn't know if you had run into this before...

My fiancee is Thai, but lived for extended periods in Oz. The police report she was given is rather drab and unofficial looking. The embassy in Thailand almost did not accept it as they insisted it was a photocopy. Is this common? I assumed the thai officials would have seen many australian police certs. Will we run into any problems with this stateside?

Thanks

Asia: East and PacificThailand or Siam? What’s in a Name?
QUOTE (anya-D @ Dec 24 2009, 08:29 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
That's because in Thai language we dont call ourself Thailand, we call ourself "Pra-ted Thai" (Pra-ted or Pra-tes means country) or "Muang Thai" (Muang means city)

I dont think they(the govt) will change it.. it's hard to explain but Siam and Thai are used in a slightly different context and it gives different feels.. like Siam is more likely to show up in a documentary or advertisment about the country and promote unity and a sense of being Thai...it has more emotional meaning attached to it.

And Buddhist way is pretty much embedded in the Thai culture anyway, Brother Mark, I remember you said something about Aam being Christian with Thai or Buddhist influence (sorry I couldnt find a right way to say this) I'm not sure how to explain but Buddhist has been with Thailand from almost at the begining so culturaly speaking, our way of life has been carved to follow buddhist way of teaching.. that's what I think the article pointed out that eventhough one is not Buddhist, but if they are Thai, in some way or the other, they are also influence by Buddhist (as in Thai culture). Too bad that our way of life has changed too much too fast... one hardly recognize a true Thai culture anymore.

Change is the status quo, especially when it's nearly impossible for countries to be isolated. However, it's nothing new. Buddhism was introduced from South Asia, combined with the existing animism and other beliefs, then Chinese migration had huge influences on Thai culture. Now it's western influence.

Also I was reading there's constant turmoil between the State Department of Culture going after people for all sorts of things they think are not Thai and shutting down websites? I think that's the wrong sort of attitude.

Anyway, I think this is a great topic, and if you're interested in it more I would suggest "A History of Thailand" by Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit. It's a bit academic, but really really fascinating.

Asia: East and PacificVisiting Japan for the first time, need help and suggestions

Hello VJ family,
I just learned that I'll be going to Tokyo, Japan for work-purpose at the end of March for 1 month. I am super excited but nervous at the same time. I wanted to get some opinions from this site because it' a great resource.

I am strict vegetarian (no eggs, seafood, meat, etc). Will I be able to survive there? On the same topic, my concern is if my coworkers there take me to some restaurants, what are the chances there will be some vegetarian option available? What should I take from here just-in-case?

What is the weather like there in March-April? Any suggestions on type of clothes I should pack or not pack?

I am ok in high-hill shoes in US since there is very little walking here but I learned that I will be required to walk to/from train stations? So I should pack some comfortable dress shoes, right?

What other things I can do or prepare so I can mingle properly with local team there (I barely know any of them)? I don't want to offend them in any way. Like I've mentioned, I am super excited but also very nervous because I am worried I'll offend people unintentionally or speak/wear wrong thing.

Thanks again!!!!

It's 40-50 degrees F, so about 5-12 degrees C during March. You should have no problems finding vegetarian food. I would ask someone familiar with Japanese work culture about that. All I know is you should not be boastful or overly confident, it's quite a gregarious/less individualistic culture than western culture is.

Asia: East and PacificExtra bag on return flight - pay the overcharge?
I'm not sure of British Airways policy, but every time I've flown (Korean Air, Thai Air, Singapore Air, United, Delta) they've allowed 2 checked bags @ 50 lbs each. If she was over the weight limit that might have inspired the 60 dollar fee. However, this is much, much, cheaper than sending anything FedEx, so I would take it for a song.

I order to get my wife here my brother, father, and I both took one of her bags, as we only brought one. We then shipped a bunch of stuff freight (you know, those giant gaudy portraits you have to do at wedding studio, etc), which came 2 months later and half of it was broken. This still cost about 100 bucks.

Cheers

I enjoy the green mango salad, but prefer Som Tum, with the fermented crabs and pra ra, the stinkier the better :) It's also really good with those little dried shrimp, they're not quite as strong as the shrimp paste.

You can make that mango salad with Green apples too, i like that almost as much. Fairly relevant since they're will be boatloads of those in the next few weeks.

This weekend we made nam prik nuum (it's sort of a northern chili relish) with the massive amount of green chilies we had from our garden. Because they were too spicy to be edible in large amounts, I cut out the seeds and roasted them until black on the outside, put that in a food processor with garlic, shallot, palm sugar, fish sauce, and some lime juice. Its great with cucumbers, green eggplants, or my favorite, pork rinds.

Waivers (I-601 and I-212) and Administrative Processes (221g)k-3 issuance process

hi to everyone
my husband's interview is on aug 28, 2007 at islamabad, pakistan.
the problem is that he works and lives in Abu Dhabi, UAE for over 5 - 6 yrs and working for the defense. I asked for a file transfer from Abu Dhabi US embassy they said "NO BECAUSE HE IS FRM PAKISTAN AND ITS A K- 3 VISA + YOUR MARRIAGE TOOK PLACE IN PAKISTAN" So now he has to make extra arrangments from his work to take time off and go to pakistan get the medical done and police certificate from both locations.

Now my questions is: Does anyone know if the US embassy in Islamabad keeps the passport for visa issuance or do they mail the visa or I know they can stamp but will not because its a man appplying for visa so they have to time for secuirty clearance. The reason why I'am asking this question is because my husband will return to abu dhbai on sep 5 2007 and of course for re entry he needs his passport with residence visa.

one more question: does anyone have any Idea where hotels near the emabssy are n cost etc never been to Islamabad so pls help

Its so stupid because we live 5 mins away from the US embassy in Abu Dhabi, UAE. but we have to go to Islamabad embassy

ok
thanks

You need to ask the question in the islamabad thread.

http://www.visajourn...h...=79&st=3645

From what I have read in the previous posts there, it seems to be both ways. In your case it will be a valid reason to return your husbands passport as he will need it to travel back to his place of employment. The K-3 has to be issued in the country of marriage I beleive that is mandated in the K-3 law. Make sure your husband explains his situation at the embassy clearly. More than likely he will have to return back to islamabad once they are ready to issue the visa.

If your wife has her CNIC she should be able to get her passport within six days by paying the expedited fee for it. My wife got hers in six days in karachi. Do not know where your wife is located. You also need to visit the islamabad thread here it has tons of info on what goes on after the approval.

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & Proceduresi-130 and k3

hello
i have a confusing diffecult situation
my wife a us citzen, filled for me on 2005, and uscis said that case will take 990 to 999 days so it's was so long , so my wife moved to my home country living with me , so it's up to 2 years now , we check the status online all time and says this cas recieved and pending ..........we did not change the address and in bigining of this year we calld uscis and we wanted to change the address and customer servise representive said they can not change out of united states so we hired a lawyer and adviced us to apply for k-3 and we did on the bigining of march /2007 so we recieved the notice that the case will take from 60 to 180 days and they transfer the case to california service center, and it says on the status that iot's pending, nothing happend from that time till now on that status of k-3(how you know that it's touched when i see the same satatus all time) ; our attorney said that we need to apply foir an other I-130 in the embassy in our country so it can be faster ,
does I-130 and k3 are connected or seperated( i mean does the delay of i-130 make k-3 late too)?
do we need to apply for an other I-130 here in the consulate of my home country?
please guys some help this is really make us so confused
thank you alot

The K3 you filed in march 2007 is connected to the first I-130 as you have to submit its NOA1 (I-797) for them to process the K3, so in that sense I guess they are connected.
You can tell that the USCIS has "touched" your case by looking at the last updated date next to the case at the USCIS website. If you see the date change, then they have "touched" your case.
I beleive the lawyer is suggesting Direct Consular Filing (DCF) since you wife has been in your home country for longer than six months. I do not know much about that. It may be better to wait and see what happens with the K3, that you filled in march. Otherwise you need to talk to a really good immigration lawyer from the US. Hope this helps.
