The embassy in Bogota received my petition on February 20, 2006. Apparently they sent the package on february 22, 2006.
and we never received the package #3 I went to Colombia to spend time with my wife from February23 to March 1st. And We never received nothingggggg. I already faxed and sent thru Servientrega the DS-230 part 1, and DS-2001 along with
my wife passport copy, I called the embassy and the told me that I had to send the DS-156.
Could somebody tell me was is really in that package #3.
Thanks
And Good luck to everyone!

Hi Angely,

Please fill out your timeline so that we can help you and it will help others as well. I have a actual packet 3 & 4 that the U.S. Embassy sends to fiancé(e) in Colombia. If you want them send me a private message (PM) with your e-mail address with some room in the inbox because each packet is about 3 to 4 MB. The packets are in Adobe Acrobat .pdf file.

The documents and paperwork that come in packet 3 are;

Letter from U.S. Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia
Instructions (2 pages)
OF-169
Instructions on what you need for the K-1 petition (2 pages)
DS-230 part 1 (2 pages)
DS-156 (2 pages)
DS-156K
Instructions for I-134 and back-ups
I-134

Read my other threads on this section for short-cuts, how to track package though DHL from NVC and other advice.

To: All VJ members going through the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia.

I am posting this thread because I have had to explain this process many times so by putting it here it should help everyone. The best of luck to your fiancée and you. (L)

You could look at my timeline and get an idea. Remember no two K-1 fiancée visa petitions are exactly the same.

After your petition leaves your service center (CSC/TSC, NVC, VSC) it goes to NVC and it might take about two weeks. From NVC it goes to the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá this usually takes about four or five days.

There are short-cuts that you can take once the petition gets to Bogotá. But the first thing you do is to call NVC every couple of days to a week. Make sure you speak with a customer service representative and not the automated system, K-1’s stay less than two weeks and they do not put them in the system. When you call NVC, get your case number and ask them when they will sent the petition out. Once you know that date, call back on that date and make sure that they sent it out. Then you track the package through www.dhl.com. I will give you the instruction later.

Once the petition gets to the Embassy you or your fiancée faxes and sends by courier (Servientrega); a copy of your fiancées passport, OF-169, DS-2001 and DS-230 part 1. If the Embassy gets these documents before the cut-off date (varies from month to month 16th to the 20th) then you get the interview the following month. If not by the cut-off date you get the interview the month after that.

After the NOA2 every thing moves fast so you need to make sure your fiancée and you get all the documents, paperwork, and all other stuff ready and send it to her.

Good luck,

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresK1 check to which name??? HELP
Hi fllf,

Make check payable to “U.S. Department of Homeland Security”. It would be better if you paid by check because that way you could get your cancelled check with the receipt number on the back of the check. If you use a money order you will not get it back, hence you will not have the receipt number. I never got my NOA1 letter by mail. This is why I am telling you this.

I was quoted ½ to 2/3 less than you were quoted by about 6 lawyers. But a couple of them told me that if my case was simple I should do it myself. A complicated case has overstays, police records, etc. Good luck and the quicker you start the quicker you finish.

Hi Melo,

Have you e-mail them? E-mail all three or at least USCIS and NVC and stay after them, then call them. They will probably give you a can response but stay on top of them and like that you have documentation in case it takes longer that they say and you get your Congressman, Senator or a review.

Good luck,

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresNVC
Hi Paul,

This might sound like a stupid question but are you speaking with an actual person at NVC? Because if you are using their automated system, K-1 petition never come out through there. K-1 petition are at NVC for a short period of time unless you are under a security review. I hope this helps out if not call and e-mail both places until someone tells you something.

Good luck,

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedureshelp! explain the poverty guidelines for the US
Hi Lennie,

In a nut shell you take the amount on the table at; http://aspe.os.dhhs....05poverty.shtml. If you live and have no kids that you support and your fiancée has no kids you would look at the number 2 row “Persons on Family Unit”, the amount is $12,830 for most of the U.S. Then you would take that number times 125%. 12,830 x 1.25 = 16,037.50. This means you need to have a gross income of $16,037.50 per year. So you definitely qualify with room to spare, now if there are dependents involve look at that row and do the calculations using the new dollar amount x 1.25.

You only worry about savings, property, etc, if you do not meet the qualifications. This guideline are for 2005, the 2006 guidelines are out but I do not know if they are using them yet but there is not much of a change you are still alright at $40k a year. $370 increase from 2005 to 2006 on two people.

Good luck,

Peter Miami

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresLawyers are a waiste of time and money!
That is why zyggy is correct for basic functions; like fill out forms, mailing documents, gathering information from their client, etc, they suck most of the time because this is not what they study for, that is their thinking. They just like the easy money part of it. Where they shine if they somewhat value their jobs is in courts, litigations, problem solving, etc. This is not right but it is how it is. No one is going to put time and effort that the actual people involve in it, unless you are paying six figures.

There are knowledgeable VJ members that can help you with almost every part of the process.

Good luck,

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresPacket 3 arrived, what do i send back ?
Hi Johanna,

How are you doing? :D With the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia we fax and sent the checklist and DS-230 part 1, through a courier service. Because there has been cases that people have faxed it but the Embassy said they did not received it. If I was you I would play it safe, fax and send it in, do both. I have seen they do this in other countries also with the exception of Canada and U.K.

Good luck,

Peter Miami

Hi Miranda,

Different forms are used in different U.S. Embassy’s. But the forms you are speaking about are the same for most. I am not sure for the U.K. you have to speak with someone going through there but most countries you fax and/or send the checklist and DS-230 part 1. Once you go to the interview you take the DS-156 (2 Copies, 1 for Bank), DS-156K, DS-157 (Males Only), Birth Certificate, Police Records, Medical, Lab Works, etc. Hope this helps.

Good luck,
