Africa: Sub-SaharanIs this something to worry about?
Responding to Boundless I think that your fiancee should still go to his interview next week 12/22. The worst that can happen is them sending him home. Its a risk but I guess for love and for your sanity its worth a try. I say go for the interview next week. Good luck. All the best.

Africa: Sub-SaharanWhere does your fiancee live?
This is a dumb question but will it be a problem if I still live with my parents? See in our culture (igbo culture) it is not advisable to move out until one is in the process of getting married. They know and love my fiancee and Im in the final stages of getting our own apartment when he comes. Im just so nervous. You know Naija. They can be very unpredictable. I just dont want any surprises. Any suggestions will do.

Ok guy. Before I begin I just want to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in advance. My fiancee interview date is December 30 and as each day approaches, Im becoming a nervous wreck. On the petition form I put that me and my fiancee met in Diera, Dubai. We met through a friend. Is that a good way to answer that question if it is asked. Im getting scared because I saw a couple a cases being denied because one was introduced through a friend. Im so scared. What is the best thing to say? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hello VJ Family,
I was wondering if anyone was ever issued a 2nd interview after the were previously denied. If so what happened? What additional documents did you send for the interview? I just dont know Im a little paranoid. We're dealing with the Lagos consulate. I pray to God that something good comes out of this interview.

Africa: Sub-SaharanHelp! Help!! Help!!! K-1 Visa Denied

Thanks reeses16,the CO actually said bcos of the elaborate intro ceremony and me agreeing to pay bride price it means I'm married.I tried to argue wit him that it's just an formal introduction of the two families but he said I'm legally married. What I dont knw now is should I cum out to say I'm married or I should just do a court wedding?pls help I'm so confused n so scared!!!

Im very sorry to hear about your denial. My fiancee and I were also denied but for different reasons, but we were given a second interview January 14,2010 at 1pm. I just want you and everyone to know that these CO did thorough training on the Nigerian culture. They know more that you think they know. Paying "bride price" constitutes initiating a marriage proposal. I share your frustration. This visa journey is not easy. Im really sorry. These CO at the Lagos Consulate are looking at the slightest oppurtunity to deny one a visa (just my opinion). I agree with the advice of others to file either the k3 or cr1 visa. My fear is that you dont pay the consequences for misrepresentation in the long run. All the best.

Africa: Sub-SaharanLagos Consulate Round 3!!! Fight!!!

I am glad you got your visa the second interview. Positive attitude has a lot to do with it and that can be hard with all the self appointed Nigeria bashers that live to try to damage any Nigerian/American relationship that hits an immigration bump. It is always good when honest couple get through the bumps and there is more proof that Nigerians are good spouses in spite of woman that blame them for their own stupid mistakes. So when is he coming ?????

NigeriaorBust,
You are just too much!!! Now thats words of encouragement. Its unfortunate how one can blame/sterotype Nigerians because of their mishaps. Very childish and ignorant. Thanks for all the advices.

Africa: Sub-SaharanLagos Consulate Round 3!!! Fight!!!
Hello VJ Members,
I know everyone has been anticipating my interview results. And guess what? We had the infamous Asian lady. According to my fiancee, he said that the interview went pretty good. He was called to her window. Before she proceded with the interview She said "Your fiancee the petitioner called the Senators office saying we had additional evidence. My fiancee gave her the call logs. She said "Wow" you guys talk everyday. He said Yes. Then she said lets talk. My fiancee then showed her pictures, she didnt say anything about those, then he showed the lease to the apartment that we are renting (I moved in January 9th.The original plan was for my fiancee to Arrive January 14 which is today). She asked him if I had family in Nigeria. He said Yes.Then she asked if my parents visit Nigeria often. He said Yes. Then she preceded and asked to see our emails. Now on the email, Me and my fiancee put alot of Your wife or your husband so he took a black marker and crossed them out. She asked "What is it that your omiting on these emails? He told the truth and said that we were addressing each other as husband and wife. She said then you two are married. He said no we are not. So they were going back and fourth, she even went as far as to show her supervisor the emails with the omissions. She stated that our relationship was really true I guess seeing all the calls (She compared my fiancee mobile number on the call log to the one the application). She continued and asked if we did a traditional introduction or engagement. He said No that Im busy that Im in nursing school. She was saying that American ladies dont address themselves as husband and wife if their not married. He then told her that my parents are igbo and I was born in the US, and we addressed each other in such a manner because we were madly in love. They then started to giggle and laugh with each other. I even sent my passport. She was like OH MY GOD. Can you believe that this petitoner sent her US Passport"? Thats what she was saying to other interviewers. Wow unbelieveable. He then told her that I sent my passport because we were desperate to be together. She kept pressing the issue on the omissions on the email. She asked when was the last time that I came to Nigeria? He said 1985. She then said you guys are truly a couple that why dont we file for k3 its much faster. My fiancee said no. That we are not married. She stated that she believes that we secretly got married in Nigeria. Then she started looking through my passport that I sent to see if I had actually visited Nigeria, and she was so dumb founded because she saw no visa stamps coming/leaving Nigeria. She had no evidence or proof that I came to Nigeria. She said ok. Well on a good day she can deny us because of omiting details on our email, saying thats fradulent. She said we have two options. We either go and file K3 or I scan all the pages of my enitre passport from when I last visited Nigeria. He told him that he schedule and can come back anytime that he wants with the additional documents. He asked is that all she needs and she said Yes. Documented on her computer and gave him letter requesting for additional documents. So when my fiancee called me at 9:30am my time, I immediately retrieved my old expired passport (For goodness sake it expired in 10/1990. I have nothing to hide, and enclosed is my visa stamps dated for 10/1985. I have nothing to hide. I FedEx it priority ($85.98) and I called Department of State to request transcipts of my passports issued to me on my name. The infamous Asian Lady kept our call logs and our emails. Im so tired of this run around. I strongly believe we would have been approved if not for those omissions on the emails. Not making any excuses but which right person that is in Love wouldnt do that? But what is there buisness? So my fiancee scheduled and interview for next week Thursaday January 21. Back to Lagos Consulate again. All this run around for the name of love. I dont mind because hes worth it. Hoping for the best.Im not discouraged.

Africa: Sub-SaharanPetition expires February 9,2010 (What should we do?)
Hello VJ,
My fiancee got an email from the Lagos Consulate stating that he should come back February 22,2010 to present the additional documents listed on the 221g that was given to him January 14. But our petiton expires February 9 2010. Is that going to be a problem? If so how can the embassy extend our expiration date?

Africa: Sub-SaharanGetting Ready for Lagos Interview

Thank you all for the advice.

I have known him for quite some time, (since we started high School in 1997) and we were best friends before we got together.

We are about the same age, I am only 4 months older.

I saw him 4 times last year (3 times that I went to Naija and once that we met up in London). I have all the passport stamps (both my Naija and American passports- I’m dual citizen and his Naija Passports), boarding passes, and pictures. Also I have pics I took with his parents and sisters, The only problem is that the pictures are not dated.

We talk about 4 times a day and we Skype every weekend. I have records of all his calls on my sprint bill and he was able to get records of my calls so I think we are good on that front.

I have decided to print e-mails from 2005, I figured 5 years should be good enough. I just want to be as ready as possible.

Right now I’m about to fill out the I-134 and get backup for the support. If I make over the 18K (which I do btw), do I also need Tax transcripts from the IRS, if I have my W2’s for 3 years and a letter from my employer? Does the Letter from Employer need to be notarized?

I am sorry I ask a lot of questions but I just want to be as ready and I can be.

And Nwanyioma, I won’t forget to pray… al this will mean nothing if I don’t. I will also be praying for you. When is your next interview?

Oh so sorry for the late reply. The 3rd interview/appointment is February 22 to present the evidence as stated on the 221g. Good luck on your interview May 4 which by the way is my fiancee's birthday. All the best

Congratulation on your interview date. Its seems so far away but so near. Please whatever you do, DO NOT submit any emails calling your fiancee my husband or him calling you his wife. Please. Make sure you and your fiancee know about each other well. Make sure that you have enough evidence to prove to them that you two indeed have a bondafide relationship. Last but not lease dont forget to pray. My fiancee and myself have overcome many obstacles with the Lagos Consulate (hopefully our last ordeal will be February when we present the documents that they requested). All the best and good luck to the both of you.

Im really sorry to hear about your husband's denial. My fiancee was denied December 30,2009 and was given a second interview January 14, 2010 with the help of my senator Im assuming. I had the Asian CO who is pretty much known for denying visa. Long story short we were given a 221g to bring additional documents and we go back February 22. I met my fiancee in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) last year. So from what everyone is saying it really depends on the interviewer and the mood that they are in. If you dont want to wait, Ive seen many couples on this website refile the same petition or get married and go through K3 or CR1 route. It all depends on you and your SO. All the Best.

Africa: Sub-SaharanAdditional Proof

Your comment perfectly described my feelings of hopelessness and frustration today.

I am crushed by the way our government is treating us in Lagos. We love each other very much and it almost feels like they are torturing us for no good reason. We submitted so much proof and they still gave us a 221g. Why? He is not a national threat or a security risk so why can't I marry him. I have a constitutional right to marry. A bonafide relationship is a subjective standard. They don't even know us. They look at a few pictures and review a few hundred pieces of paper as if its conclusive.... not to mention preventing the other person from attending the interview. I think that is 1 of the best ways to see if there is genuine love. The family based visas are meant to bring families together but the Lagos embassy appears thrilled to create feelings of hopelessness in our situations. Some of us are truly in love and we just want to be with our partners. This process is also time consuming and expensive and I notice a lot people on the board don't profess to have unlimited resources to fight OUR government. The multiple interview trips for nonsense reasons (in Lagos most often delay tactics used to discourage couples) and the travel and hotel expenses for a day at the embassy is stressful and expensive for everyone involved. Money that we intended to use to start our life together. Not only are we suffering but our extended family is suffering. I miss my fiance so much, I cry everyday since he received the 221g. We want to be together to support and strengthen each other. We are heartbroken but worst than that..... we are now terrified of the embassy in Lagos.

From the American Dream promises, to having a college education with no job, and now...not being able to freely exercise my constitutional right to marriage... I am beginning to feel like MY government is not serving MY interests and I am starting to feel like an idiot for believing my government cared. Its all red tape, paperwork and a cold heart....... no real compassion and I am sorry to say that the fear of terror is going to further restrict us from being united with our loved ones abroad.

We are not criminals.... I wish the US Embassy in Lagos would stop treating us like we are.

Lastly, I want to say that the US Embassy in Lagos will not keep us apart. Our victory may be delayed but it won't be denied because we don't have to settle in the US.

HoneyHummingbird,
Im really sorry to hear about your fiancee being issued a 221g. I guess me, you and others are on the same boat. Left hopeless with feeling uncertain of how our future will be determined courtesy of the American CO's at the Lagos Consulate. Its very heart breaking and discouraging. Please dont give up.

queend,
Im very sorry to hear about your husbands denial. My fiancee was initially denied December 30,2009 too. We got the senator involved and we were granted a second interview January 14 (we were given a 221g to bring in additional evidence and we go back February 22 to present our documents). Lagos consulate is a very difficult consulate why I dont know. My only advice to you is not to give up. Call your senator that represents the state that you live in. They will inquire information on why the visa was denied. If that doesnt work many couples on this website have re-filed the same petition or they go and get married and file k3 or cr1. It all depends on you and your SO.Good luck and all the best.
