Had my pretty uneventful interview this morning.

after waiting like 5min from appt time at 850 (got there at 830), a very nice lady called me in. Verified current address, SSN, ph#, if I had any other trips after submitting the N400. Asked me to read "Who was Abraham Lincoln" and write 'Lincoln was president during the civil war".

Questions asked were:

- Name one of the largest rivers in US
- who lived in US before europeans
- Who is the speaker of the house
- when was declaration of Independence
- How many years we elect a president for
- What are the first ten amendments called

handed me a white paper with congratulations part checked. She said I will be scheduled for ceremony here in Tallahassee, but cant estimate a date (which is good and bad - good since no 6hr drive, bad since I am scheduled for a trip in end of May, in case the oath is within a week before the trip - I am in trouble as I wont have GC).


Uneventful?!!

Dude/Miss/Mrs, you are citizen now and who is to say your letter or /and your oath date wont be before the beginning of May or before you trip?

I was thinking maybe your IO was nasty or mean to you or something!

Just to add to my timeline to give everyone an idea of processing times:

Naturalization Interview - Wednesday 18th April (successful)
Oath Ceremony - Friday 27th April in Philadelphia, and that will conclude my 5/6 year paperwork experience with the USCIS.

So yes...I'm a US Citizen! Took 3 months and 12 days so it was a pretty quick process. The oath ceremony was kinda cheesy for me especially when they played "Proud to be an American" at the end. I thought the pre-recorded message from Obama was a nice touch even though I don't like him. I happened to be in the 3rd row from where they started handing out Naturalization Certificates so I got out of there pretty quickly. The judge came around 12:30 and I was out by 1PM so my ceremony was pretty short.

I am the first in my immediate family to get naturalized so it was a little weird for me to be honest. I don't feel any different but I'm glad that I'll be able to vote in this upcoming election.

Anyways, thanks to all you guys for your support and help throughout my journey. Now I need to help the rest of my family go down this process if they want to =)

Oh one question...do you have to sign the naturalization certificate? There is a section for my signature on the N-550.

wanttobeanamerica, I checked my status online at USCIS.gov using my receipt number and 4 days after I completed biometrics my status changed to in line for interview scheduling. 2 days after that I received my interview notice. All of my timeline is in my signature at the bottom of my post. How quickly you get scheduled for interview will depend on your local office and their work load, I think my office is quite a lot quieter than some of the other surrounding offices.

I started studying for the test properly about 2 weeks before my interview, before that I had downloaded a phone app that quizzes you on the questions and would go through it every now and again. I had a big advantage though as English is my first (and only) language. If you are not 100% fluent/confident in your English I think most people would advise to start studying when you start to apply. Right now the USCIS aims to get people's N-400s processed within 5 months of receiving them. This is a target and does not always apply to everyone as some people have more complicated cases than others.

I also think that some of your processing time can depend on whether you are immediately eligible to be a citizen when you apply, or whether you are applying with the 90 days before 3 years with marriage or 90 days before 5 years as a permanent resident. I think people who are applying at the 90 days before eligibility point have to wait a little longer for interviews, etc. because they have to wait until they hit 3 or 5 years as a permanent resident before they can become citizens.


Ugh, that really sucks, Jade! I applied at my oath ceremony since they offered it right there. But I also live close enough to go to LA that if I hadn't applied and needed to travel at short notice, I would be able to book some tickets and hopefully get the passport quickly.

Edit: Just a thought, Jade. Do you HAVE to apply at your local post office? Could you try another one in your area, one or 2 towns/cities over? Might be worth checking into.

How long after your biometrics were you notified of your interview schedule? Like was your case updated on line immediately or it took more than a week? Just....nervous here?

Wait until you get home tonight and realise there's no green card sitting in your wallet. It feels really strange. Great to hear there are a nice amount of people in your ceremony. There was 4,439 in my ceremony yesterday :blink:. Took a very long time to get everyone seated, hopefully it will be a lot quicker to sit 739 people :lol:.

Congrats Randye80! Portland must have been just behind Fresno because I was done by noon!

After turning down a same-day oath ceremony last week I checked my phone yesterday and saw a voicemail message from immigration asking me to call them about my oath ceremony. It turns out that as they were entering my information into the system a flag popped up that my fingerprints were going to expire before my oath ceremony. They gave me two options, do my oath ceremony the following day or come in and redo my fingerprints and then get back in line for an oath ceremony. So, tada, I'm now an American! I'm really happy that they called to give me the option even if it involved some last minute scrambling with my and D's work.

The oath ceremony took longer than I expected - mostly because they wanted the applicants in a particular order and since there were 36 of us (from 21 different countries) that took a while. I was expecting it to start more promptly. My favourite part was that near the beginning of the ceremony we all stood up one at a time and said what country we were from, which was neat as it gave an introvert like me a chance to know where everyone else was coming from. In my ceremony Russia was the clear winner especially if you include the former parts of the USSR. There were four other Canadians there besides me. All in all, I'm thrilled to be done this stage of paperwork. Next up - passport application!

To be honest, I view INS/USCIS people as alien that do not communicate with people at all via phone.

My interview was on Monday 08/06/2012. Before sending the application I used the USCIS calculator and it said Earliest Accepted Filing Date: 04/23/2012. They have received my application exactly on April 23. The USCIS officer told me that my application was received a day earlier, anyways she did interview me and I passed the English and Civics test. She told me that a decision cannot be made at the time and the will send me a letter. My question is: Who makes the decision and what should i expect?

I spoke to USCIS on the phone and asked about it,since I also sent mine earlier. Sent on Aug 30,2012. Received/Priority date on NOA is Sept.4,2012. My earliest elig date is Sept 1,2012. They said its fine,they base it on Priority date not the date application was
Sent but im.crossing my fingers still.
Any news about your case?

The law says he can file 90 days before he qualifies. The law does not allow him to apply 91 days early. USCIS cannot ignore the law and say one day early is okay.

It's might be a tough lesson, but the US cannot allow its own agency to ignore the law.


Like I said, I COMPLETELY understand the LAW but I do HOPE and PRAY that it will not be DENIED or have to REFILE!

My interview was on Monday 08/06/2012. Before sending the application I used the USCIS calculator and it said Earliest Accepted Filing Date: 04/23/2012. They have received my application exactly on April 23. The USCIS officer told me that my application was received a day earlier, anyways she did interview me and I passed the English and Civics test. She told me that a decision cannot be made at the time and the will send me a letter. My question is: Who makes the decision and what should i expect?

Wow...I completely understand the whole thing about mailing or signing your application on or after the date you are eligible BUT to deny you or refile based on that? I hope to God you are approved

I wish I knew why Baltimore took so long... We had three October filers and we all were naturalized in May/June. Our case didn't begin any movement until we contacted our Senator. And it was less than two months from contact with our Senator to his oath ceremony... after 6 months of nothing. I'm just so glad that it's over now :thumbs:


I just hope mine is not the case as I am with Baltimore office as well!:unsure:

Also when you mean senator, are you talking about Mikulski?!

Had the interview today @ 8AM in Baltimore. Interview lasted 20 minutes, and passed :thumbs:
Was told to come back @ 11:45AM for the oath ceremony, ceremony began @ 12:30PM and lasted about half-hour.

Glad it's over, finally!

Wow! yayyyyyyyyyyyy! Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!! man i can't wait for this friday i have my infopass apointment hopefully the same thing happes to me in gods will! 2 month to be exact by now since my interview! Wish me luck this friday!!!!!!!!



OMG - I just received the email that informed me that I'm scheduled for the Oath. In a few days I will know the date!

The info pass appointment helped, someone actually looked for my file. Let's hope they added the note to change my name, otherwise I will have to leave the ceremony (existing international airline tickets) and reschedule.

I think that I have to drive to DC for the passport application because I don't have much time until my next trip.


My local offoce is also in baltimore as well..you mean you had to do info pass your case?!!

And I'm an American! There were 98 new citizens from 37 different countries at my ceremony. I've registered to vote already (online, but they had forms at the ceremony) and now I have to go and apply for a passport, as I'm travelling to the UK at the end of October. The sad thing is, the passport application requires the original naturalization certificate, so I'll have to be without for a few weeks until they send it back with my new passport.

State dept. tracking site is completely worthless. Did my passport application 5 weeks ago. Was able to track my application after about a week which gave me a record number and the standard processing times etc.

Even though I had received a letter from them more than two weeks ago, which must have interupted my case for at least a week, no change on the status. They probably don't update you on these kind of events. Makes me even wonder if they're gonna update me on shipping.

What is your guy's experience with their status updates?

my husband also applied for USC in march..He recently took oath and became citizen on sep6th..
Seny application to Uscis on 10th March ,biometrics on 17th April,Interview on 13th June.
And he was asked to come for reinterview on 6th sep and he went to the reinterview and took oath on the same day.
His local office is Fairfax.
This information would help someone I think.
