US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 FILERS - MARCH 2012

I am a U.S. Citizen as of 07/25/2012.
I sent my N-400 application taking advantage of the 90 days rule, based on 5 yrs rule with 5 yrs marks on 06/01/2012. Officially USC on 07/25/2012. Total 4 months and 20-ish days from start to finish, not bad.

N-400 Interview:
The IO was not rude or friendly, just straight to the point. Asked so so many questions even my previous marriage, my jobs, travel, traffic tickets (told everything was paid and taken care of. I have proof, she said no need). She got a copy of my Selective Service which I got from here. https://www.sss.gov/...rification.aspx
I also bring everything related to USCIS from my previous marriage, ROC, and such. I would say, over-prepare is better guys. IO told me don't need to bring all these because you applied based on 5 yrs rule.
She congrats me for passing the Civics and English tests. She asked me to wait outside for decision. I initially thought she would hand me oath letter, because I saw(red letter) to several people and even talked with people came before me.
She handed me a letter, here is what it says " decision cannot be made at this time ". I was pissed
I did not know what to say. Why cannot be made? what is the red flag ? nothing....
The next day I called USCIS Tier 2, and IO approved me later in the afternoon.
After that all I have to do is waiting....but instead of doing that I keep calling USCIS Tier 2 almost every single day. I contacted my Senator, and U.S.Rep.
After exactly 30 days, I got oath letter.FYI,this is not because of Senator or U.S.Rep because they have not put their hands on my request yet.

Oath ceremony:
At USCIS Sacramento Filed office.
There were 2 oath on the same day. AT 1:30pm and 2:30pm(mine).
You sit, they hand you a package contains oath ceremony program, history book, letter from the President, Declaration of Independent booklet, and Certificate holder/protector.

ceremony program
- Welcoming Message by Director of USCIS Sacramento Filed office. Guess what !!! She interviewed me for my wife application. Very very friendly and professional. She was the one advised me to apply 90 days ahead.
- Faces of America (Video)
- Oath of Allegiance by Director of USCIS Sacramento Filed office.
- Pledge of Allegiance, I volunteered to lead.
- Star Spangled Banner (Video)
- President welcoming message (Video)
- Closing remarks by Director of USCIS Sacramento Filed office.
- Collect the Naturalization Certificate

I observed that there are so many people wearing jean and really inappropriate outfit :bonk:

Nothing much at the oath. You just have to follow directions.
Excuse my grammar, and any mistake.

I called again and the agent was able to verify that I need to go back in and get my biometrics redone.

He wasn't able to say why, whether my FO has incorrect information or my fingerprints were rejected not sure. I should be receiving a notice with my new time and day this week.

To runtoodeep and kcash (Baltimore filer):
It's volume, this office holds three oath ceremonies per week (in the morning) and offers same day oath ceremonies in the afternoon. I have been to two already and the room was packed. Other offices process a smaller amount of applicants, but hold oath ceremonies once per month.

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 question, please help
Does or did he try to register with them? If he did, SSS should have sent him a Status Letter.

When you say illegally, are you talking about student visa or something?

If he can prove with a statement that he unknowingly didn't register, then he should be good.

He also should explain that he became lpr after 26.

Thanks for the reply, I am planning on going personaly to the passport center within two weeks of my flight, did it with mom a few months ago with no issues, got it the next day. It's more having the certificate or something that certifies that I am a citizen at that point in time.

Thanks.

Would like to hear from people who have recently taken their oath, do you get your naturalization certificate on the spot?

If not, do you get any kind of document that serves as such? I wanted to upgrade my F2A petition to a CR1/IR1 ASAP. Even the same day if possible, I also have a flight down to Colombia Sep. 1st, so I am hoping to have my passport before then.

Thanks.

As far as getting your passport before September, you need to apply for it and ensure that it is EXPEDITED with OVERNIGHT return both ways(sending it and receiving it).

Good luck

Answer no to the questions but make sure you have proof of payments and reveal it during interview.
I had traffic citation too but answered no and when interview came around I revealed that I wasn't arrested or anything but got citation. The woman asked if they were DUI or criminal, to which I answered no and she moved on.

US Citizenship General Discussionit happens to me

Hi Congrats on your citizenship. And need some help

I am going to apply for my citizenship soon. Just to be proactive I have been looking at the N-400 Appln form. Everything looks pretty simple straight forward questions and I answered all the questions. This was till I came to the Part 10 .. Section D..Good Moral Character...I don't know if I should answer Yes or No for questions 15, 16, 17 and 18.

Here is what I am confused about.

I have one Parking Ticket, think 2 speeding tickets.

Cop had pulled me over and given tickets for these violations. Paid the fines right away. No Court nothing was involved. And all these 3 fines were less than $500.00.

So now
Question 15: Have you ever committed a crime or offense for which you were NOT arrested
Speeding and Parking ticket is not a crime but an offense. And I was not arrested for this minor traffic offense.
So should I answer YES for this question?

Question 16: Have you ever been arrested, detained or Cited by an law enforcement officer for any reason?
I have never been arrested. But getting those 2 speeding tickets means I was cited by cop (law enforcement officer)and in order to issue those tickets he had to pull me over, run my plates and what not. So is pulling over for a traffic violation being detained?
Since I was cited (issued speeding ticket by a cop)
Should I answer YES for this question?

Question 17: Have you ever been charged with committing any crime or Offense?
Again I have not committed any crime. But traffic violation is a traffic offense. Cop did charge me with that speeding
offense.
Should I answer YES for this question?

Question 18: Have you ever been convicted of a crime or offense?
Again I have not committed any crime so never been convicted of any crime. But cop did say I was speeding and issued me tickets and I paid the fines. Does it mean the cop issuing those tickets and me paying those tickets mean I was convicted of speeding? Convicted seems like a word not appropriate for a traffic offense?
Should I answer YES for this question?

Also from what I have read online parking tickets dont matter at all. So should I even mention about that offense on the form?
Thanks to all..

Lol that was the same admonition I got from a friend

Honestly it all boils down to you and where your interview is..some states are picky while some are relaxed. Some said that younot mentioning it might make be detrimental towards your good moral character

US Citizenship General DiscussionAre Minor Traffic Violations considered as crime and should be mentioned?

Never mention it during interview because it will create problems for you. if you didn't mention anything in the forms then don't mention it during interview!!

UMUCMale02012-08-11 14:14:00
US Citizenship General DiscussionAre Minor Traffic Violations considered as crime and should be mentioned?
If you are looking for a definite answer, there isn't at all. The optimal answer is what everyone has been saying, which is answer no on the form BUT mention it during the interview verbally to the interviewer along with evidence of paying
These questions have sparked huge debate, along with Selective Service System question
UMUCMale02012-08-11 08:20:00
US Citizenship General DiscussionAre Minor Traffic Violations considered as crime and should be mentioned?

I have been reading contradictory posts on VJ and would like some input from members with concrete knowledge on the issue. I received a ticket for talking on a cell phone while driving about 3 years ago. Ofcourse I paid it off within a week. I got the impression from posts here that such minor offenses are not to be mentioned and thus ticked "NO" to all such questions during the ROC. Everything went well and I did the same when filing for N400. Now I have come across posts where members are talking about ticking "Yes" to questions where it says if a crime/offense has been committed without arrest. If that is true, I may have made mistakes on my application and what should my next course of action be? I know, these petty offenses don't carry any weight, but I don't want to be held for lying, which was never my intention. Your advice and experience would be appreciated.
Thank You.

US Citizenship General DiscussionJust filed for N-400, Fingerprints done

Hello everyone,

I've been following the forums on this website for quite some time now. I filed my N-400 in the beginning of the month. I got my fingerprint notice on 8/20, the appointment is for 9/13, but I did a walk-in at the West Palm Beach office yesterday. It was no issue, apart from a 2-hour wait. So in case anyone in this area wondering whether or not that office takes walk-ins, yes they do :-)!
Quick question, how long does it usually take to receive an interview date/notice after the fingerprints have been done?
Also, the office is fresh out of study guides for the test, good thing my B.A. is in U.S. History :-)

It dpends on your DO....Try to look through other filers from 5 months ago and compare. It will give u better picture

US Citizenship General DiscussionObtaining traffic violations disposition certificates
Exactly what av8or said...and even if you have doubts, all you really need is the copy of the ticket and payment from the DMV, just case the IO is strict. When I had my interview, I mentioned that I did get tickets and I quote"Were they DUI related?", I answered NO and she moved on!

You will be alright..good luck

US Citizenship General DiscussionObtaining traffic violations disposition certificates

Hi,

I am currently living in PA for almost 5 years now. Before that I had lived and carried driver's license for NJ, MA, CT, TX, again CT before finally calling PA, the home.

While filling out the N400 form I mentioned 1 traffic ticket that I got in NYS (Rochester) back in 2009. This is the only ticket that I have received in the past 5 years. I have the ticket # and payment status in my email when I paid for it online. Would that be enough or do I need to call NYS DMV to ask for a certified disposition receipt?

Now, here is a twist - when I filled out the application form I was under the impression that I have to report any violations in the past 5 years. However, now reading through various posts/forums it seems like we are supposed to discolse everything from the day we landed here in US. Well, if that is the case then:
1) I had my first speeding ticket back in 2001 in MA (CT drivers license) - for this I plead not-guilty and went for a hearing. At the hearing, the officer did not show up and the judge reduced the fine for me and I paid the reduced fine
2) 2002 (or maybe 2003) in FL (CT drivers license) - I had not moved to TX by that time and thus was using the rental car for a road trip from Houston to Orlando. On my way back got pulled over for doing 100mph in 80mph zone! Unfortunately I lost the citation slip and did not pay that until 2004 - and that happened when I was converting my TX license to CT
3) 2005 in MA (CT drivers license) - I promptly paid the ticket on time

The above 3 tickets that I got were all below $500 for sure, but other than that I have no information on the citation number and dates. What should I do? Should I verbally tell the IO during interview about these? or let it go and do not even bother mentioning these as these are well outside the 5 years window?

We understand and appreciate that, just wanted to warn you of the dangers of saying you are a USC before you actually are one. Being so close to it and then getting denied and possibly even deported, is no laughing matter. I know everyone appreciates your enthusiasm and goodwill for people who are close to becoming USCs.

Don't make the mistake to call yourself a USC after interview approval as one becomes a USC not until after taking the oath. This person hasn't taken his/her oath yet, so is not yet a USC! Chances are small but denial after a succesful interview is technically possible.

Travel is not a problem. Even if you would miss your oath without notfifying USCIS, you can still call them (within a year) to resume your case and have your oath rescheduled. Worst that can happen is a delay. Only thing you have to make sure is that your travel plans do not violate the eligibilty requirements. If your physical presence in the US remains within the eligibility requirements nothing will happen. However, if asked about any changes since interview do mention this trip.

Sorry about that..i was just happy for him thats all

I would be careful with your phrasing, WANTTOBEANAMERICAN. Deathstrike is NOT a US Citizen and won't be until sworn in at their oath ceremony (Deathstrike, I know you are aware of this, just wanted to make sure that WTBAA is aware of this, too). It is very important that people remember NOT to claim to be a US Citizen until they are sworn in as one.

Yes sir!

Aiight sir!

Had my pretty uneventful interview this morning.

after waiting like 5min from appt time at 850 (got there at 830), a very nice lady called me in. Verified current address, SSN, ph#, if I had any other trips after submitting the N400. Asked me to read "Who was Abraham Lincoln" and write 'Lincoln was president during the civil war".

Questions asked were:

- Name one of the largest rivers in US
- who lived in US before europeans
- Who is the speaker of the house
- when was declaration of Independence
- How many years we elect a president for
- What are the first ten amendments called

handed me a white paper with congratulations part checked. She said I will be scheduled for ceremony here in Tallahassee, but cant estimate a date (which is good and bad - good since no 6hr drive, bad since I am scheduled for a trip in end of May, in case the oath is within a week before the trip - I am in trouble as I wont have GC).

Uneventful?!!

Dude/Miss/Mrs, you are citizen now and who is to say your letter or /and your oath date wont be before the beginning of May or before you trip?

I was thinking maybe your IO was nasty or mean to you or something!
