CanadaCANADIAN THANKSGIVING
My husband and I are driving from Baltimore to Rhode Island, and my parents are driving from Montreal to Rhode Island and we're all meeting up tomorrow evening at 6pm and we're going to stay with my relatives in Rhode Island for a family Thanksgiving :) My relatives in Rhode Island did the same thing I am doing now, only back in the early 70's.. they left Montreal because they were in love with American boys in Rhode Island, only their immigration process was MUCH EASIER BACK THEN lol so anyways, my husband gets to meet my American/Canadian family for the first time and see my parents again and my brother and I can't WAIT! We're both so excited, we don't even care that it's going to take 6 hours to get there.

YAY :) Happy Thanksgiving to you all :)

CanadaTitre for Medical

Hey gang

I just got back from my family physician's office (here in Ottawa) and told her I needed a titre for the required vaccinations. I had to pay $25!!!!!! #######??? Has anyone else had to pay to get this done? I mean, really, I would think that in Ontario we pay enough taxes for healthcare that they don't have to nickel and dime for such things.

She also gave me a vaccination record that I had my tetanus shot a few years ago. Is this all I need? Gosh, it's fee after fee.... I can't believe my medical is going to cost $285.... and they specified it had to be cash. How much of that do you think goes in their pocket!?

Do I sound frustrated yet? lol Anyway, medical is scheduled for Nov 15th...they said I don't need the interview letter since I don't have it yet, I just need to bring a copy of the checklist that has the file# on it.

Come on Montreal, start sending out Packet 4 to those of us waiting!!!

Well at least you got to pay in Canadian dollars. Mine was over $320 US dollars... cash... and an AWFUL experience in the ghetto to top it off.

CanadaAdding married name to passport? Help please

You have to mail it to the passport office in Ottawa if you're not in Canada.

Oh wow, you think it's safe to mail a passport?? Hmmm... I'm not sure how much I trust the postal system :)

CanadaAdding married name to passport? Help please
I've been trying to figure out how to add my married name to my Canadian passport and have been having the hardest time trying to figure out how to do it. I mean, I know how to do it, as I've researched it and found these instructions:

Married Surnames

To add a married surname to a valid passport that was issued in your surname at birth, submit:

* a signed letter requesting the addition of your married surname to your passport,
* your marriage certificate (a photocopy is accepted),
* your valid passport, and
* the fee of CAN$12

But my question is... WHERE do I bring it?? I'm in the states... and it doesn't give any information as to where I'm supposed to bring this info. Has anyone here done this? As I don't have advanced parole, I can't go to Canada and do it.. so I'm wondering if there's anything I can do from within the United States.

CanadaWhat foods are the Same in the US

When I first visited Ashley, I brought back a bottle of Heinz ketchup as a 'bilingual' gift for a friend of mine who loves ketchup. She said it tasted sweeter than what we're used to in the States.

I agree 100% with that... I'm not a big ketchup fan but I could eat good old Canadian ketchup with my fries back home in Montreal... here the ketchup is too... tart, I guess. Too much vinegar, perhaps. All I know is I can't eat it.. oh and what's the deal with cream soda being brown here in the states??

Ok now we have the items Canadians miss being south, and new things they have discovered. How about those of you that are there tell us what foods taste the same.

I can tell you what isn't the same... Cheez Whiz!!!! Theirs is like a liquid nacho sauce.. ours is that nice thicker spreadable stuff for eating with celery!!!!

Haha,

I was just commenting to my husband earlier that it's amazing that shredded cheese is the same price per ounce as regular cheese is!

I will sneak in here though that I really, really, really would like a Tim Horton's Coffee.

I might drive to R.I., where I hear they have one in the near future just for that. It's been too long.

They've already got Tim Hortons in Rhode Island.. was just there for Canadian Thanksgiving and drove right by one :)

CanadaAnyone file for AOS without an I-94 and make it?

I guess I'm unclear as to how you got married.

I had just graduated university and was moving out of my apartment so I could move back in with my parents who live an hour away from Montreal. I was going to live with my parents and work with my dad to start paying back tuition money.

my husband and I have known each other for about 7 years but got really really close this past year and he said "Hey, why don't you come here for the summer, you can crash here" so I figured.. why not?? I had money saved up from my job in Montreal, and didn't have any more rent to pay since I had just moved out of my apartment in Montreal and was moving back in with my parents (all my stuff is still there at their place).. and so I went to the US in May, stayed til July, then my now husband and I and 2 other friends took a road trip and ended up going to Canada for the 4th of July and then came back to the USA (So I used the 4th of July as my last entry date into the US even though I spent the months of May and June in the US with my now husband)

So long story short, during the months of May, June, July, and August, we fell madly in love. It may only look like we fell in love during July and August since on all my forms I used July 4 as my last entry date (because that's the truth and ther was no way I was going to lie about that!) but either way, we fell madly in love and got married in August. My status was a visitor, but I had no visa or anything.

CanadaAnyone file for AOS without an I-94 and make it?

We dated and I just applied for a new one each year. So yes it's very possible to do. The only thing is timing so your I-94 doesn't expire before you get your EAD etc.

For the forms etc, we did hire a immigration lawyer (about $3000), but it was worth it as I was unsure as well about doing all this on a I-94 compared to having a K-1 or whatever.

Well my problem is I've never ever had an I-94 in my life... ever. I have always crossed the border extremely easily and without receiving any stamps, I-94, etc. I used to only show my Quebec medicare card and social insurance card.. then they required passports so I showed that, and never got anything stamped into it or received an I-94.

So I have nothing to renew, and nothing that expires. So basically, I don't know how to prove when I actually did cross the border. I only have my return bus ticket showing I was definitely planning on going back to Canada.

Anyone? Anyone at all?

CanadaAnyone file for AOS without an I-94 and make it?
Ok so I've been reading posts about interview preparation and I have not received an interview date yet but I'm beginning to worry about what I will be able to show for eligibility for lawful permanent residency. I didn't come in on any K visa and I did not receive an I-94 when I crossed the border.

So now I'm wondering what I can do.. I already got an RFE about not having an I-94... they wanted me to submit it... However, I went to an infopass interview before filing for AOS and the immigration officer said she saw cases like mine all the time and that I was just to write "No I-94/Canadian Citizen" in the I-485 and anywhere else that asked for the I-94 number. As a response to the RFE, I wrote a letter explaining that as Canadian Citizens, we don't require an I-94 and that I was advised by an immigration officer at the Baltimore office to write "No I-94/Canadian Citizen".

I'm starting to worry now.. I was looking over the I-102 form and looks like I can't even file for that since I don't even know how I'd be able to prove when I crossed the border.

The only way I know of that I can prove that I never had intent to stay here is by showing a return bus ticket I still have, which I was supposed to use to go back to Canada after my visit. But who knows if that's enough proof. Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone else gone through this? :help:

QUOTE (trailmix @ May 11 2009, 04:24 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
She can apply to sponsor your Father: link

Who can be sponsored
You can sponsor:

parents
grandparents
brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters or grandsons who are orphaned, under 18 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship
another relative of any age or relationship if none of the above relatives could be sponsored, and you have no other relatives who are Canadian citizens, persons registered as Indians under the Indian Act or permanent residents and
accompanying relatives of the above (for example, spouse, partner and dependent children).

My father doesn't need to be sponsored... the father of the baby wants to be able to live in Canada with my sister and their baby.

The only thing I see that might apply is: accompanying relatives of the above (for example, spouse, partner and dependent children). The father of the baby would be my sister's partner (they are not married)

CanadaBaby of Canadian mother born in Canada; can Portuguese father get citizenship?
My sister is currently living in Ireland. She is a Canadian citizen and also has her EU citizenship through my dad (born in Portugal). She is moving back to Canada to have the baby. The father is trying his best to also go to Canada to be there with her and the baby.

When the baby is born, will he be able to get citizenship (or at least some form of residency) through the baby?

My gut tells me no, but it's worth asking about.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Are you sure? Why won't they question her about being out of the country for more than 6 months?

CanadaTravelling with 2 passports but wants to return back to Canada
Hello all,

I was wondering if you could help out with a question that I have. My sister has dual citizenship. She has Canadian citizenship (born and raised in Quebec) and also has EU Citizenship (Portuguese). She has been living abroad in Ireland for quite some time and will be returning to Canada in late summer.

She does not know which passport to use when returning, as she has been outside Canada for longer than 6 months, but would like to return back to Canada to make it her permanent home once again. She is thinking she will use her Canadian passport to leave Ireland so she can return to Canada using her Canadian passport. I know it's not smart to travel with two passports, but she did for whatever reason.

Will she encounter issues when she returns to Canada if she uses her Canadian passport? Will she be penalized for being out of the country for longer than 6 months? Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.

CanadaLetter affirming desire to marry for K1...

In the K-1 Guide section it states that I need this for the interview:

"Send an original letter affirming your desire to marry your fiance(e) and your continued support of the K-1 Visa. Sign and date the form. This will be similar to the letter you provided with the I-129F, but dated much closer to the interview (it will have most likely been several months since you submitted your I-129F)."

My lawyer is claiming this isn't necessary. Anybody not do this and still be ok? My poor fiance has already signed a zillion things and mailed them, so if we didn't have to do this that would be great. Obviously if its needed thats fine.

Any experiences from you all would be great!

Thanks,

Laura

Morning,
My advice is to provide one signed.
I have found that too much paperwork is not a bad thing. If they do not require it, then things can continue, if they do and you do not provide one, then this will just further slow down the process. I did provide one for my fiance and initial package, and so far I have not hit any road blocks.
Good luck.

CanadaAsking for a later interview date and how long is the K1 good for
I was wondering the same thing. I just faxed over a extension request because the police record too 2 months. My fiance had his interview in June. Just got the police certificate last week and he got a letter telling him to have me immediately ask for an extension via fax. His visa was pretty much approved all we were waiting for was that police record. So now we wait. Hope they send his visa this week.

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 August 2013 Filers

Hi,guys.

I have a weird situation going on and  i was hoping i will get some kind of advise on it.

I have filed my n-400 in august,16th,have received my NOA relatively fast,as well as biometrics notice.

On September 23d my case has been placed in line for the interview scheduling with a little note in the info box"If you have not received the notice within 90 days of the date above, please call customer service",well it just so happened that it's been over 90 days and there is no status change,i called  their office early in the morning and they said that they are sending the request to the immigration office, they gave me the confirmation number of the form that they filed, and according to what they say,i have to wait for another 30 days until i get some kind of information (not necessarily the interview notice),this is madness and  i don't know what's going on!

I'm upset,it has been over 4 months now since i filed my n-400 and there is no activity at all.

have any of you, guys, experienced anything similar?or maybe your friends?i don't know what to think since  i've read that naturalization procedure is relatively fast.

Icy Star, I am having the same problem. Filed N-400 in August  ( in Baltimore) and still waiting for an interview date.

CanadaGeneral Questions
I've been trolling around the forums during our process of bringing my fiancee from Canada to the US. The guides have been very helpful and most of my questions have been answered along the way...but I have some questions I couldn't find answers to.

We JUST received packet 3 from Montreal. She is going to fill out all the documents required and send them back with the checklist this week. One of my questions is regarding the checklist...do they expect you to actually HAVE all the checklist items in hand before we send it back? Would checking them all as "yes" and sending it back constitute lying? Also, the medical won't be scheduled until closer to the interview day...so what do we put on the checklist for that? "no" or "pending" or something?

Another question, which I am sure I understand and know the answer to (I just want to make sure) is the "proof of residence" thing. Is that only needed for when BOTH parties have lived outside of the US?

Last question...my fiancee's last day of work at her job is Jan 29th. She wants to come visit for a bit before her medical and visa interview...In my mind, I was thinking we could drive to her medical and then drive back (from Maryland to Montreal) and then when we drive up for her interview, she flies back to Halifax and stays for a week or two (until the paperwork is mailed to her domicile.) Will we have any issues with this type of scenario? Thanks for the help and keep up the good work on the site.

No, I've never heard of this. How the heck are you supposed to get them if they won't send it? Did she call only one of the two offices on the list? There are only certain places that you can get it done.

Yeah, it was this one:

Sanagex Medicine du Travail

CanadaIs getting Medical within 1-2 day of Montreal Interview realistic?

But that's if no other documents are required and everything goes smoothly. Maggies blip that almost caused her not to have her medical results in time was resulting form a medication she took 10 years ago. I would never have thought you'd need a letter for that.

Just be careful everyone. It may only be the delay in the issuance of the visa, but with the way Montreal is right now that delay could last weeks or months.

Yeah. Obviously this whole event is premised on the fact that we have all our ducks in a row. If something goes wrong, something goes wrong. We'll just scramble and deal with it. Really all we can do.

We've done everything we can to be prepared and either it pays off or we get a bump in the road.

While waiting for our K1 interview my girlfriend came to visit before we drove up to Montreal for said interview. Needless to say, I warned her several times about what she should say, what she shouldn't say, etc. Apparently she did so bad while talking to the border security agent at the airport that he straight up said "you know you're telling me all the wrong things here?" Anyway, they sent her back to get further questioning and STILL let her through to catch her flight. That said...it's a ####### shoot every time you try to cross the border.

CanadaVisa Approved
For such a draining process, everything couldn't have gone smoother or with less fanfare. I'll do a small review of the hotel/consulate/medical as well as some overall Montreal thoughts.

Hotel: We stayed at Le Square Phillips. We were going to be here a week...with medical on Monday and interview on Friday so I wanted a place central to both the medical and consulate as well as with a kitchen to save on food expenses. The hotel is pretty nice. Has a pool. Located 2 minutes from the consulate and 8 minutes from Medisys. Staff was nice. Free parking in their garage. A little on the more expensive side but well worth it. Only issue came today, when apparently the Olympic Athlete parade is going on down St. Catherine street and ending...yep...in Phillips Square...so I am a tad worried about road closures since we have to get to the airport by 4. If it's an issue there's a shuttle and a bus right down the street so no biggie.

Medisys: Got there about 12:00 for a 12:30 appointment. At the counter she presented her appointment letter, vaccine list, medication letter from Dr. and passport then waited for her name to be called. When called, they took her height, weigh, blood pressure and gave blood. Took eye test with contacts in and contacts out. Signed forms...then went back to the waiting room for X-ray (which apparently comes on CDs now and not the large thing it used to). Went back for X-ray and took off shirt and bra (kept pants on.) Took X-ray then back out to waiting room to hand the lady at the counter a piece of paper. Waited again. Dr comes out and called her back for the last time. Get undressed to socks and underwear (minus bra) and put on gown. Sat on table and Dr. checks the pulse and lungs. Next is the breast exam...asks about any issues with lumps in past. Lays you back on the table and pokes you in the stomach and asks about stomach pain. Dr. checks spine next and asks questions about pain in back. Next he checks reflexes. After that he asks about tobacco use and history. Medical complete...go back out and wait to be called to pay. Medisys accepts cash, debit or credit CAD. 213.22 total after tax. All in all, not a painful experience and completely non evasive. Took about an hour and a half total.

Consulate: Got there about 6:15. First in line on St. Alexandre street with back to yellow posts and facing the door. Door opened about 7:40 (sign does say the hours are 8:30 to whatever though). By the time 7:40 rolled around, there was a line about 30 deep. Anyway, we are asked for our passports and the appointment letter (the portion with the time/date stamp on it.) We hand it to the guard and he tells us to go to the next guard by the conveyor belt. We are asked to empty pockets, take off belts and sweatshirts and place them in bins to go through the scanner. So we walk around to the right and walk through the metal detector. The guard okays us and we grab our stuff and head downstairs. We sit right next to the elevator and wait to be allowed up. (FYI, there's a photo booth right there in that area if you need photos. $4.) The guard steps out of the elevator and takes our letter A and appointment letter. Tells us and a few others to get on board. Inside, someone was leaning against the doors that actually open and the guard warned them. So we get upstairs and sit. Shortly we're called back to window 11. She asked us for passport and copy, birth certificate and copy of it. Affidavit of support and supporting documents...and the police check. That was it. They already had all other documentation with them...including passport photos. (I'd say bring everything in triplicate anyway...never can be too safe.) So she took that information and asked us to go pay the fee at window 14. Paid the fee and went to sit down again, waiting to be called back. Called back to window 11 again. This time she asked if all info was correct on the 156 (I believe) and took her fingerprints. Said we were all set and to go sit down and we'll be called back to room 7 or 8. So about 15 minutes later, we're called back to room 7. An older lady with long gray hair...very nice...was there behind the glass. Asked her to place finger on scanner to test fingerprints. Then she gave us the oath and asked us the following:

1: How did we meet?
2: Who visited whom first?
3: When did I propose?
4: Where do we live?
5: What's my job?
6: Asked her if she liked Maryland.
7: What's her job?
8: Do I have health insurance?
9: When's the wedding?

That was it. All in all a pretty easy process if you pay attention to detail and plan accordingly. I may have taken a little risk scheduling the medical on Monday and the interview being on Friday, but all went smoothly and we were well prepared. We were able to pick up the medical results on Thursday afternoon. The only advice I would give would be to remain calm and use the information in this forum to your advantage. Everything is spelled out for you in detail. The process of gathering information is the daunting part...the medical and interview are a snap if you're already prepared going into it.

As far as Montreal goes, pretty nice city. Some of the places we ate that I would suggest:

Nonno's in Little Italy. Everything tastes very fresh as it's probably all bought at the Marche de Talon that same day. Frite Alore was ok. It's a burger barn with lots of poutine choices. I had a nice goatcheese burger with bacon.

You did it right, no worries. Apparently, the original intent was for the DS 160 to replace the DS 156, but after more than a year that change hasn't come into effect. For some reason they still want you to fill out both despite the questions being almost identical.

thank you both for the information. Very helpful

CanadaDS-160 and DS-156 Forms
We are going through the packet 3 requirements and proceeding to send in the required forms. As we started to do the DS-160 we noticed it seems to be a smooth online system, we got done and got a nice confirmation with digital passport photo and bar code. Seemed straight forward

We did the online DS-156 form online and it seemed like we did exactly the same stuff twice, got another pdf with barcode.

So did we do this same thing twice accidently, or did we do the right thing and it just happens to be very similar

Thanks
