Thanks! I can't imagine that either. The lady next to me asked me if I was going into labor because the baby was moving a lot and I kept rubbing my tummy. :lol:

I went to the SS office first so that I could mail off the certificate with my passport application. I don't know if the SS office can accept a copy of your naturalization certificate, I don't see why not, I just hadn't thought of doing that. All they do is enter your alien number and check your details so it might not be a problem. It doesn't really matter when you go to the SS office and change your status, as long as you remember to do it. I know someone who lived here for many many years and they tried to claim SS at retirement age and the SS office had no proof of them being a citizen and it was a headache to fix.

I have no idea about the voter registration form. I sent mine off to the local government, they will send me a card if they accept my application. Where did you send your forms to?

So to clarify things with you since u are very knowledgable about USCIS so far, you did the SS first before your passport?

I could and should have done that but my need to get everything done one time got in the way.

Yes, I checked the application status online and it wanted me to verify my email address to send me email updates.

My N-400 did go fast, which was very surprising but also very convenient! I'm 36 weeks pregnant and if it had taken any longer I don't know if we could have driven all the way to the interview and then back again for the oath, it is 80+ miles each way. ROC was a different story, took 100 days just for the biometrics appointment!

Did you mail off your naturalization certificate? If so, I don't think you can update your status at the SS office until you get your certificate or passport.


Actually when I went to the SS office, the lady asked for a copy of the certificate and the SS5 form, which was why I sent the certificate along with my passport application.

Wait until at least the 10th. It didn't take very long for them to do. Make sure you print out the form for replacing a Social Security card and fill it out before you go. You will need your naturalization certificate and ID. They asked to see my SS card but I didn't take it with me, but it might be a good idea to take that too.


Yeah, that would probably be safe. I had to go there twice, I went the day after my ceremony as I wanted to send off for my passport as soon as possible, but it was too early. Don't go there more times than you have to! :lol:


I actually did my passport application last week friday and the SS on Thursday, the day after. :lol:

I have sent the voting registration form last friday as well.

You are right about that...And for some reason, it seems the interview sessions for couple are a bit longer and intricate.



I was scheduled for 10:30 and was called in on exact time at 10 :30 am. They guy took me into his office. i took oath to say the truth. questions are here:
First he went thru my N 400 application.
Branch of Government?
Senator for how many years?
what did declaration of independence do ?
If the president and voice president can't serve who becomes the president?
2 questions i forgot.
Then he had me writing this sentence
The Columbus day is in October?
He had me read this sentence
When is the Columbus day?
Then he said, Congratulations you have passed and i will recommend for closest ceremony date.

Hey everyone, hubby was approved on the 19th but now his case status says this:



On July 30, 2012, we mailed a notice requesting initial evidence in this case. Please follow the instructions on the notice to submit the evidence requested. Meanwhile, processing of this case is on hold until we either receive the evidence or the opportunity to submit it expires. Once you submit the evidence requested and a decision is made, you will be notified by mail. If you move while this case is pending, please use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address or call our customer service center at 1-800-375-5283.


Im curious to know whats up with this, and the only thing I can think of is that every year we owe like $300 in taxes which gets paid by a check and we pay our taxes each year thats due. The IO asked Adam for the reciepts of that which of course we didnt bring bcz we didnt know to bring anything other than our tax transcripts of what we did. Maybe they want copies of the checks??? Anyone have thoughts ???


Try to start putting those together before the letter arrives..if that's what it is then you mail them off immediately

1. Purpose and Eligibility

o The N-400 is an application for the United States naturalization of a person. This allows a foreign-born person to gain American citizenship. There are many different situations that allow a person to file an N-400. For example, someone who is at least 18 and has been a legal permanent resident of the United States for at least the last five years can apply for naturalization. Someone who has been a legal permanent resident for the last three years, during which she was married to and lived with an American citizen, can use the N-400. FBI Fingerprint Check

o Most N-400 applicants must be fingerprinted by the FBI. A notice is mailed to the person with the date, time and location of the fingerprinting appointment. If the applicant misses the appointment, she may still be able to have the prints taken by walking into the designated location with the notice and valid proof of legal resident status, such as a green card. This check is used to search for any criminal records the person may have in the United States. The results are forwarded to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for review. Criminal history can have a negative impact on a naturalization application.

FBI Name Check

o In addition to fingerprinting, the FBI also checks the name of the applicant in the records of several law enforcement agencies. These records include personnel files, administrative notes or papers, and other legal files that may contain the candidate's name. Criminal records are also checked using this method. These checks can usually be completed quickly, but if any possible concerns arise, delays may occur while the information is being investigated.

Good Moral Character

o Background check information is used to determine if an applicant meets one of requirements for American citizenship: good moral character. Someone with a criminal record that includes convictions for murder or other aggravated felonies, which includes types of crimes involving illegal drugs, may be denied citizenship. If a person falsifies or conceals information about past criminal activity on the N-400, that person may be denied even if the hidden offense is not a crime that would have prevented citizenship. Other factors that may be considered when examining someone for good moral character are alcoholism, illegal gambling and prostitution.

Dt forget there is a difference between name check and finger print. The FBI might send ur finger print result back to uscis and they still doing ur name check.

Thank you for sharing this valuable piece of information. I did try the automated helpline and got nowhere. Will try talking to a representative and see if it gets me anywhere. But from what I learnt by calling this number, we are supposed to call after 4 weeks of Biometrics. Did they confirm your fingerprints came through?


You dont have to wait 4 weeks. I called after a week and believe it or not and if you dont have any criminal background, they respond to USCIS almost the same day or the following day.

For most, they dont even receive the yellow letter, just str8 up letter!

Some do receive the yellow letter then interview letter or vice versa simply because it is the format they follow in USCIS.

If you do receive the yellow letter, give at least 2 to 6 weeks for the actual letter, depending on your local office of course.

I just noticed that, apparently since January of this year, USCIS has its own version of a "naturalization self-test." It is a multiple choice test that then gives you the correct answer. You can get to it by drilling down from their "Citizenship" link at the USCIS home page until you get to something called "Study Materials for the Civics Test." (First clicked on "Citizenship Resource Center" and then "Study for the Test" under "Learners.") For some reason, the url address is very long, so I won't paste it here.

Hi guys,

I have been worrying about this tax thing for about a month now. I had a million questions, so I decided to buy a consultation with Mark Serbinski ($125), and it was very helpful.

I have decided to bite the bullet and have him do my Canadian and our joint US taxes this year. To begin with, I like the idea of it all being done by one person, rather than Paul doing our US tax, and me or H&R Block doing the Canadian. He might also know of things we can write off that we didn't think of. Also, you unfortunately you can't do your "goodbye Canada" return on an e-filing software, nor can you do form 8891 or the Treasury forms in the US (for RRSPs) on e-file, at least not yet.

So.........we decided that it would be best in this the most complicated year to get an expert in cross border taxes to do it. This way we will have a template for next year when we do it ourselves.

Yet another unexpected expense, but hopefully it will be worth it.

CanadaCANADIAN THANKSGIVING
My husband and I are driving from Baltimore to Rhode Island, and my parents are driving from Montreal to Rhode Island and we're all meeting up tomorrow evening at 6pm and we're going to stay with my relatives in Rhode Island for a family Thanksgiving :) My relatives in Rhode Island did the same thing I am doing now, only back in the early 70's.. they left Montreal because they were in love with American boys in Rhode Island, only their immigration process was MUCH EASIER BACK THEN lol so anyways, my husband gets to meet my American/Canadian family for the first time and see my parents again and my brother and I can't WAIT! We're both so excited, we don't even care that it's going to take 6 hours to get there.
