My fiancée is an English teacher, so if anyone wishes to contact her please let me know. She graduated university the same year as me, in 2002, with a degree in English. She has since gone back and earned a Master's in Applied Linguistics. Although I am a native speaker and an English major, she knows more about grammar theory and language acquisition than me.

Of course she still has a lot more to learn, but we have an excellent method. I will give her a new vocabulary word and since she already knows a fair amount, I will give her several synonyms as well as provide several exemplary sentences. She then begins to use these new words until she owns them. She loves learning English, so it's a joy studying with her. In return she teaches me a wealth of Thai language.

kow jai would literally be translated as "It enters my heart." To understand something requires that it enters one's heart, which is synonymous with mind (jit jai). Heart is one of the most used Thai words, especially for expressing emotions. Practically every single pop song shall contain the word 'jai.'

For naughtier stuff, I would prefer sending that privately. A book that serves as an excellent resource for that is called "Thai for Lovers." I had had a copy, but it got swiped by a deranged Thai lady.

I would be happy to help anyone with Thai language lessons. My knowledge and ability were greatly facilitated through language emersion. It got to the point where I was speaking Thai 90% and English 10% of the time. I used index cards to memorize large chunks of vocabulary and had native speakers help me with pronunciation and listening comprehension. Anyone can learn, it just takes thewillingness, patience, and commitment.

As specified in Packet 3

The I-134 Affidavit of Support should include the following:

1) The most recent year's (2008) complete tax return and/or transcript
2) A letter on company stationary stating the employee's status and annual salary
3) A copy of the Petitioner's passport (we sent just the photo and bio pages)

There is no mention of bank account or any other financial disclosure. If you are close to 125% of the poverty line (about $18,000 for a household of two) you may consider disclosing some other assets, otherwise it's unnecessary.

Edit: I would strongly advise against money transfers. It could always be misconstrued, regardless of any honest explanation. Paying for a green card, or something of the like could always be assumed with such evidence. I trust in the other forms of evidence more than this.

My fiancée was just expressing concern about the interview date. She mailed back Packet 3 two weeks ago and wants Packet 4. I told her "All in good time," yet she is thinking about all that needs to be done prior to leaving and subsequent to receiving the visa.

My solution is to accept reality and then do the best I can in any given situation. Beyond that I just let it go, or 'let it be.'

In Maryland, one needs to show two primary sources of ID. One can be a Passport and the other can be:

QUOTE
Out-of-Country driver?s license, with an international driver?s license,
or a translation into English, if required

It seems as though they want both.

There are other acceptable primary sources, such as a marriage certificate, but we'll use that for proof of MD residence, and sources can't be used twice.

My fiancée drives a big ole pickup truck. However, she's so short she needs to sit on a pillow to see above the steering wheel. The biggest adjustment for me was shifting gears with my left hand.

In order for foreigners to get a driver's license in Maryland they need:

1) DL from home country (Thai licenses have English on them, so no need to translate)
2) International DL
3) Take the knowledge test
4) Take the road test
5) sit through a 3 hour drug and alcohol awareness class and pass the test
6) take an eye exam

I am not certain what additional criteria would be necessary if she didn't already have a Thai DL since she'll have to take the tests regardless.

I had my fiancée get the international DL, so she can legally drive from the day she arrives.

My fiancée and I very well may be out in Arizona during the first week of August. It wouldn't be much at all for us to head up to Vegas for a night or two. The date I could not make it would be August 8th, however I could go a little before or after then. Let us know of any further plans and we'll earnestly consider it.

With regard to International DL, Maryland requires it along with DL from the foreigner's home country. My fiancée got it about 3 weeks ago at the center near JJ Market. If you get off the Skytrain by the market, there are clearly marked signs in Thai and English for the Driver's Service Center (cannot remember the precise verbage). She gave them about 400 Baht, two passport sized photos, showed her Thai DL, and got it in less than 30 minutes. It's valid for one year.

Technically, none of these could be denials. They probably asked most of them to return with more and/or proper evidence and/or documents. From my experience here in VisaJourney, many people are not entirely prepared, in spite of the abundance of resources; they simply neglect, misunderstand, and forget forms, evidence, etc.

Even if the consulate decides that the relationship is not bona fide, they do not reject it. Rather they send it back to USCIS where it dies a slow painful death.

One last thought is that if you prepare everything the best you can, you are in a bona fide relationship, and you still are 'rejected,' then you pick yourself up and move on. Nothing in life is worth worrying about.

Anyone in Bangkok to report first-hand on the protests? I am curious as to whether it's confined to the the old city (city hall, Parliament, PM office) and Victory Monument (central hub of city), or whether protestors are dispersed throughout the entire city. My old stomping ground was Hua Mark, right off Ramkhamhaeng Rd., and I couldn't imagine soldiers and riot police marching through, shooting tear gas and firing into the air. Then again anything is possible.

My fiancée received the police certificate in the mail today, but because of the protests and Songkran, she is unable to mail back Packet 3 until next Thursday.

Will92104, there is still hope for May interview dates at this time, but if you don't have all Packet 3 materials together right now, be sure you do so ASAP, including that darned police certificate. Took 2 weeks to issue and they sat on it another week although she had gone to the station with pre-paid envelope to have them mail it to her.

As they say, ####### (This is Thailand): Also ????????? mai pen rai (no problem).

Edit: I got a touch on Feb. 27th and less than two hours later an update saying we were approved, followed shortly later by an email. Filed at VSC.

It's not consistent. My fiancée was asked to show the letter from the consulate that comes with Packet 3. She had NOA2 but they did not ask for it. When she returned to pick up the police certificate (she still doesn't have it after 2 weeks of waiting), she heard them speaking to another Thai girl, saying that she would need the letter in order to get the certificate.

Others, as Will reports, have been able to get it with just NOA2.

We have some land up in the mountains of Nan. There is an old rickety house on it. We plan to tear it down and build a modest, but comfortable home there over the next five years or so. Since we're both teachers, we're thinking we could spend one to two months a year there and the rest of the time back in the States. Not certain about retirement there, but it's always a possibility.

My comment about devkpaik was just a poor joke. The follow up about him being occupied by marital responsibilities was not just limited to venereal, but all that the big move entails. In that quote I posted, he commented how he hadn't been on the board in two months, and seemed to be checking in to find out about AOS. I agree that healthy relationships allow for people to be themselves and it's not necessary to spend every single moment together.

edit: Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima) is the second largest city in Thailand with about 2.5 million people, compared to Chiang Mai city with a little less than 1 million.

I've bribed a Thai police officer before. He had pulled me over on my motorcycle and tried to issue me a 6,000 Baht ticket. His claim was that I was driving in the wrong lane, but the only reason I was in that lane was because his partner had pulled over a truck. I only saw the truck, not the police and was ready to pass it when the cop flagged me down. Instead I pulled out two 100 Baht bills; one for him and one for partner. He shook my hand with a huge grin saying in broken English "Tank you, tank you," and waved me on my way. I learned my lesson that when a Bangkok traffic cop flags you down, you just keep on driving: They don't go after motorcyclists.

Another time I was stopped, as they had set up a road block and I wasn't going to bust through it. Similar situation, in that they wanted me to pay an exorbitant amount. This time I honestly said, "I am leaving Thailand in two days (after living there for four years) and I will never pay your ticket. So go ahead and issue it, but I will not pay it." He sighed in disappointment and waved me on.

edit: Generally, I am quite a law abiding citizen and in the past would never have thought of doing and saying such things. However, I know exploitation when I see it and my own integrity would not allow me to be taken advantage of as such. Looking back on it, I could have handled both situations differently, but at the time that was how I reacted.

My fiancée called to let me know that the police certificate is still not ready, 10 days after she requested it. She is returning home from Bangkok now, so she'll have it mailed to her house, hopefully sometime next week. As soon as she gets it, we can send Packet 3 back. . .

She said "Good news is I got the international driver's license." She went to a station relatively near Mor Chit (JJ Weekend Market). The entire process took her about 20 minutes.

She was asked for:

1) Her 5 year Thai driver's license + her motorcycle license
2) a photocopy of her Thai passport
3) 2 photographs; she used the passport ones she had taken for the visa
4) a 500 Baht fee

She said "There were so many Thai/farang couples. It made me miss you sooo much honey!"

The reason for using 'k' and 'kh' instead of 'g' and 'k' is just to indicate aspiration (breath) or not. For example, the 'P' in Paul is said with breath, whereas the 'P' in Spain is said without breath. Just hold your fingers in front of your mouth as you say each. In Thai there is the 'B,' 'P,' and 'Ph' used as initial consonants. That is precisely why that beautiful island in the South is spelled Phuket, to many giggles from foreigners, but pronounced 'Pu-get.'

I find Thai transliteration, or karaoke Thai, to be quite cumbersome as well. While typing here, we usually omit tonal marks and other indicators. On top of it, many people transliterate differently, e.g. gai or kai for chicken. I tend to use the Royal Thai General System of Transcription, as that was what I had first learned while living in Thailand.

I wrote in all three, karaoke, Thai, and English, so as to avoid any confusion.

All the main guest houses and resorts, including Diamond beach are on the east side. The only beach on the west side that has resorts, is Ao Phrao. Last time I was there about five years ago, there were three higher end place (about 4,000 Bt a night) and a couple of cheaper places, perhaps around 2,000 a night. Ao Phrao is away from the crowds, hence the premium.

One of the best seafood places to go to on the other side had been Jep's. All the staff wear Songkran (Hawaii'an-like) button down t's. Samet is convenient and cheap enough by farang standards, but the price had gone up (between 2000 and 2004) exponentially. Before it was easy to get a place for just 200 Baht. I was living on Thai salary at the time, so that had to be considered.

Hua Hin, though also becoming a bit overcrowded, has a certain charm about it. I can't help but feel that in part it's because the town is the King's official residence. I've been there about five times and enjoyed every trip.

For a little further flung adventure, Koh Chang, just west of the Cambodian border, has some beautiful beaches as well. It is quite a hilly island, so if you rent a bike, be prepared for sharp curves and steep inclines.

It's so easy to live in Thailand, with its comfortable climate, delicious cuisine, and the loves of our lives.

The original interview I included the cell phone bills showing all the text messages she sends me, and that was not good enough to show evidence of the relationship, the consular wanted substance, showing we talked.(emphasis added)

It was not the amount of evidence that was questioned. All the interviewing officer asked for was evidence that Aaron's fiancée contacted him. Please correct me if that is not accurate Aaron, but I believe that was the sticking point. It had nothing to do with quantity.

I certainly can empathize with your inconvenience, however I do not find it illogical or unreasonable to ask for a sampling of communication going both ways. Thanks to you sharing your story, Aaron, countless others shall be prepared by having communication from both partners.

They do not specify that it must be e-mail, chat logs, text messages, or snail mail. You are free to communicate using any number of them. They just want to see that both partners are in fact communicating.

Any evidence you submit, whether during I-129F filing or brought to the interview shall be accessible to the consulate officer. With all of your other proof, you may wish to exclude those photos. Your fiancée could always bring them but not submit them. If further evidence is asked for, they can be volunteered.

I think with other documentry proof, they are not needed at all. Would you be willing to include emails? You are free to Sharpie out any private information you don't wish to share. I would also recommend you include any snail mail letters with postage stamps, photographs together, proof of seeing each other since filing the I-129F, etc.

On the Packet 3 Checklist for Bangkok it states:

QUOTE
Evidence of Relationship: In order to process your case, the officer must be convinced of your relationship with Petitioner. You must bring with you at the time of interview sufficient evidence which proves your relationship, such as photographs, letters, e-mails, old household registries, or any other evidence of your relationship with the petitioner. Failure to bring these items will delay your case. If the cosular officer is not convinced of your relationship with Petitioner, he or she may require you to submit further evidence.

We included a page or two from a sampling of chats we've had over the past four years. I don't mind if some stranger reads them, as there is nothing to hide there. Again if there is private information, it can be blackened out.

I believe so long as you have sufficient evidence, a lack of chat records is just fine.

edit: In some locales, a wedding ceremony would disqualify you from K-1, even if no legal paperwork was ever filed. You don't want the CO to believe in any way that you had a wedding ceremony. So long as you are clear that it's just an engagement ceremony, I don't think there should be any problem whatsoever.

Since the first DS-156 was never submitted, there is no barcode in the system. Though it's done online, it's not stored. People have made mistakes on their first DS-156 and just started over with no problems.

However, regarding your concern of whether to let the old address slide or use the new address, I would check what protocol should be followed. Whether you should contact NVC to let them know of the change and/or contact the consulate. On one of the forms it asks where your fiancée intends to live, so I would recommend using the new address.

Thank you for the advice about the scanned images. I did include that form from USCIS that states "I understand that photocopies are allowed and I may be asked to submit the original copies of any evidence." That is signed and dated this month. I just noticed something on the new Packet 3 checklist that has me a little concerned.

For the I-134 Affidavit of support, it asks for a copy of the Petitioner's Passport. I did include a copy of my biographical page and Thai entry stamps with the I-129F petition copy I gave my fiancée. However, I did not include the cover nor every single page. Would what she have ben sufficient, or should I be rushing her a copy of every page of my passport? Would scanned and printed copies be sufficient? Boy, as prepared as we've been, can always have a wrench thrown in the gears.

Any advice, especially from recent interviewees would be most appreciated.

My fiancée had a very pleasant experience at the police station obtaining the certificate. She said that although there were scores of people, she was processed in less than half an hour. She also said the officer was very funny. Her name is a title of an older pop song, and he was singing it and said to the other officers, "We're losing another beautiful one to a foreigner!"

While taking her photo, she asked, "May I smile?" He replied "If your smile is beautiful, go right ahead. If not, please don't!"

I reminded me of my interaction with Thais. They sing, they joke, they are so light hearted. I really miss living in that environment. sanook maak

She got the medical and requested the police cert. She'll be back in BKK next week for a teacher's conference and will pick up the police cert and mail back Packet 3 then. She told me how there were two other women waiting at the hospital for visa medicals.

The one was a hilltribe girl from Lampang. Her fiancé was Lao, but has lived in America for more than 12 years. She had already had the interview, but never received the I-134 from her fiancé, nor taken the medical. I can only presume they are not on VJ!

The other girl had "a huge diamond engagement ring!" (Oh boy, my fiancée has rich taste. She also wants platinum wedding rings.)
