They did not like my canvas tote bag, even though it was open at the top. They wanted me to "go back to the car and leave it there," but we'd come by cab from a hotel. Travel as light as possible! I wish I'd used the plastic grocery bags others recommended.

A library card is a great thing to have. Even in a small town, you can use the computers to get on the internet. Ours rents movies for a dollar, and loans music CDs. They also have readings, shows, and a free movie night. You can read newspapers and magazines galore and oh yes, did I mention they have a large collection of books?

As an aside, I heard your credit score goes down every time there's a check. This could be a New Jersey myth, but if true, it's good to know.

CanadaFirst round of goodbyes done
It's natural to feel loss for the life you're leaving. But it will always be part of you! You can look at the photos and mementos any time you like.

Meanwhile, you're crossing a beautiful bridge into a brand new life with those you love. Get out the camera to capture the new memories and milestones! Have a stiff drink, a blubbering cry, a bone cracking hug with everybody you love. Then strike out on your new and very excellent adventure!

CanadaTimely Processing of K3 Applicants
No doubt about it, you've reached the inevitable stage in the process where you're certain there's a government conspiracy. Give it up; they're not that smart. They're just backlogged by their own process, forms, and other bureaucratic bs.

Hang tight, because K-3s do happen. It might take almost as long as a CR-1, but you made the best decision at the time, there will always be surprises, delays, and variables, so sit back and enjoy the ride.

A word of advice: don't waste time looking for logic or fairness. Spend your energies instead by sampling the best beers Canada has to offer.

CanadaFRIGGIN' MONTREAL
Montreal is a wonderful place! It's USCIS that's useless. Didn't you know that's what the acronym stands for?

When I first arrived in Canada in 1967, it was to Montreal, which gave this Jersey Girl and her draft dodger husband INSTANT landed immigrant status. I stayed in Canada 38 years before returning to the Tony Soprano State.

So when I travelled back for the Montreal interview (with my Canadian-Portuguese husband), I had an absolute blast. Le shopping! La viande fumee! La poutine!

If Quebec ever separates, we'd love to have them join the States. They'll be a romantic themepark and could speak all the French they want, because we Yanks love hearing the langue d'amour!

CanadaI am absolutely beside myself right now...
Neurotica, he may be sending signals about who he is and how he expects the marriage to unfold.

If he's passive aggressive, that is, telling you what you want to hear but doing something else, it's a major red flag. If he expects you to wory about all the details while he sits back, it could become a nightmare down the road. I'd be questioning if he's truly invested in the relationship, since he blows off so many things.

Ask him point blank what he sees for the future. Who will be the breadwinner? Will there be children? Does he value fidelity? I don't mean to sound like Dr. Phil, but this is not about government forms, it's about trust and partnership.

CanadaCannucky forms....
It's never a waste of time to submit your tax return, since there can be many times when you're asked to provide a history. When I came back to the U.S. after decades in Canada, I was asked for 7 years of back tax returns when I applied for a job! They wanted to see a history of employment. How's that for a wacky request?

Even if you had no income, it's crucial to submit an exit return or Revenue Canada could deem you taxable until you do, no matter where you live.

CanadaLatest line of crap from Montreal
CP, there is a silver lining and it's this: in a world of divorce and short-lived relationships, K-3 couples stand the test of time. Why? Because they've already persevered and won! If you two can survive this process, then you've been tested by fire and will be inseparable once you're finally together. If love is about actions, then all the acts of fidelity and sacrifice will prove to be far more valuable than empty words and boxes of chocolates. Stay strong! You will succeed!

CanadaLatest line of crap from Montreal
We've fallen down a rabbit hole, and like Alice, find ourselves in a topsy turvy world without rhyme or reason. Got it? No? Then pour yourself a stiff one, because the reality is that Montreal can take 6 months from NOA2 to an interview. Why? Because that's the way it is here down in the rabbit hole.

It's not what we wanted or planned. It's not fair or efficient. So let's just accept the planet we landed on and work with what we've got. They're calling the shots while we fret and rail and complain but have no cards to play. Even after we get the visa, we start the same BS all over again trying for AOS. It's like we've landed in Purgatory and are being punished for all the swear words we ever uttered.

So CP, I'm sorry. And wish I could wave a magic wand. But know this: your turn IS coming and you'll get everything you desire. And when it happens at last, your partner will be even more desirable than ever, because you both had to work so hard to be together.

Hang in there. Montreal's better in Spring, anyway.

CanadaMassive Road Trip Super Happy Happy Fun
You could make a general plan and then play it by ear. If you land in an area you like, stay a day or two. If you hear of an interesting detour, take it. Make it a real adventure instead of a regimented tour.

Leave lots of time for this so nobody gets burned out with the driving. The Trans Canada Highway is a long haul. I'd make it a U.S. trip so he sees a different side of us than the Tri State area.

Tell him to leave his Long Johns in Edmonton. He'll need a whole new wardrobe of lighter clothes, even for the winter!

It may take them a little time to do their work. Once it's mailed, it should be a couple of business days. Hard to plan, but enjoy Cloud Nine anyway. (When we were approved, I suddenly started speaking French. All kinds of words came tumbling out. Must have been all those bilingual cereal boxes.)

CanadaEAD approved in 6 weeks
The good news is a speedy approval for EAD (by email), which means SSN is next. The bad news is an RFE for a complete medical for AOS. Senator Robert Menendez' immigration liaison (Democrat NJ) never phoned back after a week. Guess she's busy with the illegals. Infopass for this issue comes next week.

Whatever am I ever going to do once he gets his greencard and there's no more drama in my life? :hehe:
