Ooh. That would have been a good concert. Hemispheres is still my favorite Rush album, with A Farewell To Kings a close second.

I saw Rush in concert in 1997 on the Different Stages tour, and it was a great show...but I'm sure it would have paled in to comparison to seeing them in their prime in the late '70's.

How about RUSH and MAX Webster - New Years Eve concerts at Maple Leaf Gardens....Also saw RUSH Farewell to Kings Show.

Thanks to everyone here for the help and information.

With any luck at all, the time until my son can get here will be shorter rather than longer.

I spoke with his teacher back home and she has noticed a change in his school work lately. She talked to him about it and he said he's just kinds bummed. He didn't think it would take so long to be able to move here.

I'm planning my first three month visit to Minnesota (where my partner is originally from) and we've been joking back and forth about my teaching the natives the enormous health benefits of poutine, wearing head to toe 'Canada' themed clothing and speaking French as often as possible..

It has become a bit of a competition to find new outrageously Canadian ways to irritate Americans.

Any suggestions?

(Obv 'The war of 1812' and ' "free" healthcare' are tossed around liberally. smile.gif )

I'm a Canadain living in Minnesota - I mention to my friends here that it is similar to a Rissian being sent to Siberia.

- Offer to teach them to speak properly and complete thier sentences...Want to come with ?????? With what/who...

- Bring a bottle of ketchup and tell them you heard they really enjoy spicing up their hotdish. Make sure to tell them you got the mild kind.

- Tell them you heard the Viking were planning on joining the CFL so they would have at least a slim chance of winning

- Argue about "Canadian Bacon".....Our bacom in Canada is in long strips just like yours. Quit trying to pass off round slices of ham as bacon.

- Pull up to a Caribou or Starbucks drive through and ask for a double-double. Confuses the hell out of them.

CanadaNOA-1 Received from California
Hey All,

Just got the NOA1 for the I130 we sent in for my son. It came in the mail yesterday and the status on the USCIS site shows it is in Initial Review.

The timeline shows that it takes about 5 months to process. Does that mean 5 months before it is sent to NVC? The Case Status display on the USCIS site doesn't really say at what point this gets sent to NVC.

As always, thanks for the help.

CanadaOff Topic - Thanksgiving Wind Down
Everyone must be winding down or have gone home already. It is sooooo boring here at work.

4 hours until I pick my mother up at the airport. She's flying in from Ontario for a visit.

A bit of Thanksgiving Trivia I looked up to pass the time.

In the middle of the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, prompted by a series of editorials written by Sarah Josepha Hale,[10] proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated on the final Thursday in November 1863.
Abraham Lincoln's successors as president followed his example of annually declaring the final Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving. But in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt broke with this tradition. November had five Thursdays that year, and Roosevelt declared the fourth Thursday as Thanksgiving rather than the fifth one. In 1940 and 1941, years in which November had four Thursdays, he declared the third one as Thanksgiving. Although many popular histories state otherwise, he made clear that his plan was to establish it on the next-to-last Thursday in the month instead of the last one. With the country still in the midst of The Great Depression, Roosevelt thought an earlier Thanksgiving would give merchants a longer period to sell goods before Christmas. Increasing profits and spending during this period, Roosevelt hoped, would help bring the country out of the Depression. At the time, advertising goods for Christmas before Thanksgiving was considered inappropriate. Fred Lazarus, Jr., founder of the Federated Department Stores (later Macy's), is credited with convincing Roosevelt to push Thanksgiving back a week to expand the shopping season.

- And now Christmas shopping season starts at about the same time as halloween. wacko.gif

CanadaNon-legal wedding in Canada
QUOTE (Laura & Ted @ Dec 3 2009, 01:17 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Funny, I was just snuggling my cat as you wrote that. I'll see if he's available on our wedding date.

CdnMN, what are the sensitive phrases you're referring to?

For a marriage to be legal in Canada...at least in Ontario, the follow is required to be a part of the ceremony

1) The couple must individually signify their consent to the marriage.." Do you xxx take..."
2) There must be a public declaration and opportunity to provide evidence that the marriage should not take place..."If anyone here can give just reason why this couple should not be married....during the service....or by the posting of Bans of Marriage at least 3 weeks before the ceremony (If I remember correctly it is 3 weeks)
2) There official must state the authority by which he pronounces the couple as husband and wife..."By the power vested in me by the Province of xxx I now pronounce you husban and wife..."

These statements are not legally supposed to be a part of a "staged" ceremony. Of course, it isn't a big deal if you are already married. The problem is when the couple are not really married and the service is designed as a deception.

CanadaNon-legal wedding in Canada
QUOTE (Laura & Ted @ Dec 3 2009, 01:06 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Once we get our visa and I get to the US (hopefully by early 2010... waiting for packet 4 now!), we're going to get legally married there as required by the K1 process. It will be a small, private ceremony with no family or friends present.

And we're planning our "real" ceremony for September 2010 in my hometown in New Brunswick.

My question is about who can officiate. (We're not religious so not having a priest/minister/etc. We'd like to have a friend do the ceremony.) Since we will already have our marriage certificate from the US wedding and therefore not filing a Canadian marriage certificate, does that mean that the officiant at our Canadian wedding does not have to be a "registered officiant" and therefore not have to go through all the procedures to become registered?

I'm hoping people who have done their "second" and non-legal wedding in Canada (or another beneficiary's home country) can share their wisdom with me!

Thank you!!! smile.gif

Providing you are already legally married and not needing to register the marriage in Canada, anyone can officiate. Essentially, you would be renewing your vows.

Do the people who will be attending know you are already married. If not, and certain phrases are used, it could be an issue. If those in attendance are led to belive it is an actual ceremony that is where there may be an issue.

CanadaCustody Agreements
Thanks to all.

I'll pass this info on to my ex. We'll both be happier knowing there isn't any need to deal with a lawyer. (Actually, when we divorced, we just brough in a draft of what we agreed to and handed it to the lawyer and said "This is what we want".)

CdnMNMaleCanada2009-12-16 18:28:00
CanadaCustody Agreements
Right now, according to the custody agreement, my ex has sole custody. It's has never been an issue as we can get along.

We were considering just leaving the custody agreement as it is. (Why pay lawyer/court costs if we don't need to).

My ex will give a notarized letter stating that she agrees with my son moving here.

We were both concerned that if the custody agreement still said she has sole custody, either the interviewer at Montreal or the officer at the POE would cause trouble if all we had was a signed letter. We weren't sure if what is stated in the letter needs to be in agreement with what is stated in the custody agreement.

If we can avoid having to go through a lawyer and court to make an unnecessary change, that would be great.
CdnMNMaleCanada2009-12-16 18:01:00
CanadaCustody Agreements
I spoke to someone at DOS regardingthe process for bringing my son here.

One of the questions I asked was "How does the wording of our custody agreement need to be done? Can it still state we have joint custody providing I have a letter from my son's mom stating she has given permission to move here with me?"

I was told that they didn't care about the custody agreement and all I needed was a notarized letter from my ex that she was allowing my son to come and live with me.

To me, this just doesn't sound right. I don't want to go into the interview in Montreal and have my son's visa denied because of this.

Does anybody have any info on what needs to be stated on a custody agreement. Will Montreal want to see this? I need to find out so that I can get this straight with my ex and arrange for the court to process a new custody ammendment to out divorce if necessary.

Thanks.

To those of you spending your first Christmas here in the US; just to put your mind at ease, Canada is closer to the North Pole so Santa does hit Canada first, but he has plenty left over for his run through the States. - Of course, since I'm in MN, I'm in the early part of his run, not sure what happens when he gets further south.

Thank you Santa....or NWA in this case.

NWA just issued a travel waiver for flights out of MSP....among other airports.

We need to scramble a wee bit, but we are flying out tomorrow night at 7 pm. If we didn't take that flight, NWA was saying that it would likely be Sunday at best and more like Monday before they would get us to Toronto.

So, I get a couple extra days of some good old fashioned Dutch cooking and treats.

So my Niece gets on the flight from Calgary to Minneapolis yesterday and they have to wait (as I mentioned before she missed her connecting flights) - anyway, they are waiting and the captain says something along the lines of:

"We are being delayed because we are waiting for a second de-icing. I fly in and out of a lot of places and we don't have to wait for a second de-icing"

Then a few minutes later

"We are still waiting for a second de-icing, in the U.S. they only do one de-icing, in fact this is the only place where they ever do two de-icing runs"

laughing.gif

Guess it was making him a tad grouchy.

On a more somber note, one of the people who does the de-icing here in Calgary fell off of the machine yesterday and was killed, I suspect that slowed them down a bit - completely understandable.

Hey Wyatt,

She would be welcome to stay with us. We can all drink and drown our sorrows together. I could hook up a webcam to my computer and we can all cry in our beer's...or scotch...or whatever.

Seriously, I hope she gets there without any delays. At least for us, we are at home. I hate living in the airport. People look at you funny when you curl up on across a couple of chairs with a teddy bear and battery powered night light.

The good news is that, as of right now, the worst of it may miss the Twin Cities proper and go a bit north. It will still be nasty...freezing drizzle, sleet and snow....but not the 1 foot + they were thinking.

Take care and with any luck at all, we will all get to where we want to be this Christmas.
