?

JAE, maybe she liked them but told you she hated them just to see what you would say.
Also, you were the 1 who was reluctant because you thought she couldn't afford you airfare etc. Did you give her an idea of how much you'd charge?
I used to date someone who made flyers, posters, cd covers blah blah blah and he always complained that he wish his customers would ask for more of him so he could improve, point is: us regular people don't really know or even care for stuff to be professionally, perfectly done. The other day you mentioned the "ghetto (car) backdrop" but guess what? Party goers like that hype and stuff, they go all dressed up and get excited to see themselves in a picture with a brand name, expensive car.
You think that the pictures were horrible, I would think that if she thought they were horrible she wouldn't post them.

I paid $300 for my photographer whom usually charges wayyyyyy more. I don't think he did the best job but I LOVE my pictures, I didn't care about whay was in the background or the fact that he didn't tell me not to use white flowers in my bouquet but the fact that when you look at my pictures you see a beautiful couple who loves each other is what matters to me.

I know she didn't like them because she told me why.
Now of course she likes the HERSELF etc, and at the end of the day, they did record the events. Not sure if she thought they were HORRIBLE, know she was disappointed with them...Guess the point was that I SHOULD have told her my prices, but my biggest thing is I hate being pushy, again, didn't want to put her in a position where she had to say no to me seeing that we are friends...So I just kinda stayed out of it.

Absolutely people like the 'ghetto' backdrop, and as a photographer it is my JOB to give people what they want. I am not at all condemning anyone for their own personal taste, it's what THEY like that matters. But at the same time, I have my own personal opinions, ie, I know she would have been ecstatic with my stuff, which is why I was pissed because it pains me that in my opinion she could have done better.

Quick question, why do you think your photographer should have told you not to use white flowers in the bouquet?

Thanks for taking the time to look!

Beautiful, but it looks like they are in S.Cal and I am in N.Cali.

I was thinking about getting married in Lake Tahoe.
There are some very nice affordable packages available there
I will try to look for some photographers in that area so I don't have to pay for travel expenses.

To be honest, with a lot of research and a little bit of luck, you can pick up an incredible photographer, just keep looking! The main thing you want is to look for consistency in their work, ie the MAJORITY of their stuff needs to be acceptable....Sometimes you'll get someone with the odd flash of brilliance, which really isn't acceptable...If you choose someone with just portrait experience, make sure their photos are consistently good...

Thanks girl :luv:

Sure wish I could get other people in on a photo shoot... but with the visa thing and not knowing when he is going to get here, it's hard to convince others to commit to a photo shoot sometime in the next 2-6 months. LOL!

Appreciate all the suggestions you have! Even $500 seems expensive to me right now

I mean if this was a NORMAL wedding and we had a year to save and plan it would be different... *sigh*

I know God will bless me and it will all work out as it should....

Next option is, see if there is a college near you that offers photography as a major and if they do, call up and ask for the photography course tutor and ask him to recommend a student, that could work out incredibly well...I would still want to see a portfolio...Otherwise, you could state the price you are willing to pay on Craigslist....I would BEG you to let me vet the applications before you choose someone though!

I know I can't afford her airfare, hotel and fee

:crying:

I know airfare to Cali is a bunch from here....but maybe something would work is finding 4 or 5 people/families who want photo sessions done the same weekend as your wedding and could do them!! Costs would be greatly reduced.....Otherwise, I can definitely work on finding a Cali photographer that I think does nice work!!!

That really sucks :(

Maybe she didn't know what the rate would/should be...

I know that I am super paranoid about finding a photographer... to me it is so important that the photos be good. I just don't know how to screen photographers, what the average cost is, how to FIND photographers to screen....

:help:

Average cost can range from anything from $500 or so to $4000.
What I would do is Google photographers in your town.
Then, CHECK OUT their portfolio. You MUST see they have weddings in their portfolios. Then, if they don't have an ENTIRE wedding on their website, ask to see a few.
I would say look at at least 10 photographers.
Make sure you are happy with ALL of their work, not just the odd nice photo here and there.

Again, try asking family members, work colleagues for recommendations.

I am BEYOND pissed....Friend of mine lives in Michigan and was getting married.

She did ask me about taking photos, but I kind of was reluctant, assumed her budget wouldn't cover my airfare, hotel and prices.

She just put out her photos of FB.They are TERRIBLE. DISGUSTING. Shadows, no attention to skyline, no attention to posing etc.

I called her and asked her how she felt about the photos. She told me she knew they were terrible (didn't want to infere if she thought they were great).

I asked her how much she paid and the photographer charged her TWICE as much as I would have, so therefore I could have charged for airfare and hotel EASILY!

I feel PISSED as HELL, with myself AND the photographer.

The work is TRULY HORRIBLE!

A word of advice: Don't try new positions where all your man's weight is focused on a small part of your body (esp if he's gained over 30 lbs).

I need to go read back & see what DaDa was talking about where she needed a pump & a leg was in the way.

LOL. Ok, good! You all had me nervous! :)

Sowwy!!

I just remembered that I thought it was a waste of money because it expired so quickly, and then would have to file again...but the good thing is that it is now included in the cost of AOS, so not like you'll have to pay another fee when it expires....
JaEnglishGirlFemaleUnited Kingdom2010-06-04 10:40:00

I may be wrong but I am sure you can apply for AOS but NOT an EAD. If you can apply before filing for AOS, I would be AMAZED if was BEFORE getting married! Do keep us updated though!!!! Would be nice if you CAN apply before!

Ok I remember now. You CAN apply for an EAD, but it is only valid for 90 days....

Here is what is says on the 765 instructions. So, I think we are good. Got the NOA1 that is was accepted. Guess we will see :)

K-1 Nonimmigrant Fiance(e) of U.S. Citizen or K-2 Dependent--(a)(6). File Form I-765 if you are
filing within 90 days from the date of entry. This EAD cannot be renewed. Any EAD application other than for a replacement must be based on your pending application for adjustment under ©(9).

Yes you are good!
JaEnglishGirlFemaleUnited Kingdom2010-06-04 10:35:00
Mexico, Latin & South AmericaYardies a home and a farrin - Part 26!

I think it is a little different. When you come in on a K-1 you can apply for an EAD right away. A lot of people don't because if you file with your AOS, there is no additional cost for that document. If you file them separately its an additional $340. My fiance wanted to get started working as soon as possible rather than waiting almost 2 months for our wedding and then another 3 months or so for the AOS and EAD approval. If all goes well, he should be able to start working as soon as we get back from our honeymoon!

I may be wrong but I am sure you can apply for AOS but NOT an EAD. If you can apply before filing for AOS, I would be AMAZED if was BEFORE getting married! Do keep us updated though!!!! Would be nice if you CAN apply before!

I normally get hotels via skyauction.com, the Jamaica Grande auctions never usually go lower than $30 as a base price. Won an auction yesterday for $5 base per night!! So for me, my husband and my son will be $1200 for 14 nights!!!
I paid MORE in 2003 for the Grande!!!

English you care about your work and you put your heart and sole into it because you love it. It sounds like he is just doing it for the money and he " thinks" he is good at it. But I see for those clients that he thinks can't tell the differnce they could tell which pics to use on their page and which ones to not use. Ha showed him!!!

You see it!

JaEng, that's funny that he's already studied you. He's probably scared of you taking away his clients with your superior work.

What was funnier was that he kept 'throwing' the fact I went to university to study photography at me....He really made no attempt to hide that my photos are better...and it's not even the fact mine are better than is the issue, it was his attitude....I LOVE helping people, will give all the tips I have, suppliers etc. The way I feel is that I should be HELPING rather than sniping at others in the business....I do kind think our 'relationship' will go downhill FAST the second I get a backdrop, because I've built up a extremely good rapport with a large number of the promoters in the area...All the other people that take photos at the dances here just set up and stay with their backgrounds and don't take 'live shots'. My MO will be to do both, hence the promoter gets an incentive for me being at the dance. Once I work for a promoter though, in return will ask for exclusive rights to ALL his dances...Cheeky I know, but not prepared to deal with the fighting that goes on over venues, places inside to set up etc...

I don't blame you...you have to have pride in your work and I definitely believe that at the end of the day people like that guy never get ahead of the game

Funniest thing, back in Oct, the PROMOTER of the party asked me to take a photo in front of this guy's background. BEaring in mind the PROMOTER is why you're there in the first place. The photographer was like 'hell no'. I had to BED the promoter not to throw him out there and then....The same promoter said to me this weekend he can't wait for me to get a backdrop so he can stop having this guy around....

Hey all...

Did almost nothing at the weekend, but did take photos at two parties/dances.

Was talking to another photographer who I often see at these events. He sets up a background and takes pics and prints them out on the night, which I don't currently do because I don't have a 'ghetto' backdrop, ie the car or champagne bottle.

So anyway, he'll make little smart comments about how much money he made, or how nice and cool it is downstairs and how I'm sweating it upstairs. I just smiled at him....So anyway, we were talking about quality of photos and he said oh he doesn't use an external flash 'he keeps it basic' and plus the people 'don't know the difference'...
Now, I agree, BEFORE I came on the scene, partygoers may not have realized how BAD his pics are, but in a SIDE by SIDE comparision, his don't make it. So I say this as diplomatically as I can, he says to me 'well anyway you went to college for it, I trained myself'....I nearly fell over laughing, because of course this means he's been on my site looking at my photos and saw the 'about me' stuff.
But what makes me feel so darn good is the week after a take photos at a party, EVERYONE who I have taken a pic of on facebook uses mine as a display...No bigger compliment....But I still just shake my head at the attitude that because you think the person you are photographing doesn't know the difference, there is no point in stepping your game up! I don't care if my client thinks they are AMAZING, I STILL want to EXCEED their expectations, CONTINUE improving. Even if the CLIENT doesn't know a good photo from a bad one, I DO!

Girl BOOM
My family feels that since I have a great income with my hubby and we have a house and some kids already we should take her. Im like hell to the no!!!!!!!!

My dad spoke to my hubby about it (behind my back :bonk: ) and he said yes!

I told him do you remember that my baby is graduating the 1st of July and will need to be here in that month. \How can we take another child?

I feel that its going to be so different for her to adjust and understand whats going on and another child would just shadow that, because my family willbe coming to get my neice like she is a princess.

I dont want nothing to overshadow my baby coming. This is her time'

I asked my dad why can the take her??, my step mom works and he dont  He is there all day

Dont forget im still working full time and so is my hubby. Thats alot

Hubby got pissed and said that if it was his brother daughter he would take her.

I said thats all fine and dandy, but Moy Moy need to adjust first  then lets see what we are doing.

Im not even thinking of the baby in my stomach im just thinking of her right now.

My dad is in a good situation to take her right now.

maybe later we can take her but my dad has had custody of her before when my sister has cut up. and been in and out of jail.

I dont care of this sounds selfish, its overwhelming :wow:

hey always tell the baby I said heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

I do not know what it is to walk in your shoes so cannot pass judgment on your decision.

In Jamaica, it would be a foregone conclusion that you would take the child. That is probably why your husband said he would take the child, in Jamaica, the question would even arise, it would be assumed that the child would be taken in.
I know you are saying that your daughter needs to adjust, but what is the alternative if no-one takes your niece? Foster care?
This is probably one of the biggest cultural difference between Americans and Jamaicans. Here, it's no biggie. The though is, well I can't be inconvenienced, so while I'd like to take the child I can't. In Jamaica, there's a sense of responsibility, no matter how it is going to be worked out, it is going to have to be worked out.

Your husband is probably finding how you think incomprehensible right now because it is so far removed from what he would expect to do.

Hope you make the right decision.
