CanadaVenting...
Thanks guys. It's nice to hear other people waited a bit too. Seems like every post I read lately is people packed up with one foot out the door on the interview date. I haven't seen my fiance since August and we won't have time to see each other for christmas or in between me moving there due to work. It's so hard to be away from the person you love, and is especially frustrating since it's self imposed... grr!

At least now I feel like I'm doing the right thing money/job wise. I'll just pray it gets busier than it already is so I have no time to wallow in self-pity

CanadaVenting...
What kind of idiot am I to agree to stay until the end of the year at work? I manage a retail store and they asked me to stay until Christmas was over. My visa was approved on Oct 7th, and I am so freaking antsy to leave I can't even stand it.

I know it's dumb to complain when others are waiting to know whether their visa is approved or for NOA2.... (I'm sorry!)

Did anyone else wait a while before you moved? Advice on how to cope? I keep saying well if things get bad I'll just leave. I also keep telling myself I'm saving tons of money for when I can't work waiting for EAD. I couldn't just up and leave though but it sure is annoying and stupid of me to agree to stay.

CanadaApproved!!

Yes. And we had a case there. I left the country before my visitor visa expired. That's the main thing that's making me nervous. My interview is at 1:45.
Should I be there at 1:30?
I'm bringing my packet 3
Letter of intent.
I-134 2009 and 2010 w-2 and tax return.
Pictures from 2007 to present.
Call history since we started this process.
Passport pictures.
Police certificate.
Am I missing something? I hope not because I'm already in Montreal with those documents. :-/
Thank you!

Birth Certificate + Passport... Good luck!

CanadaPassport questions
I renewed mine during the process without any issues at all. You just need to use the updated passport number once you receive it. I believe you can renew BEFORE the 1 year as long as you give them an explanation for why you need it renewed.

CanadaMedical/Blood Pressure
Haha I'm pretty sure my BP was through the roof at my medical and they never said anything. If you're on BP medication you would obviously need to mention it and bring a note from your doctor but the blood pressure you mentioned isn't all that high..

Canadapolice certificate
Yeah I used the commissionaires in Vancouver. Super fast, easy, and pleasant to deal with unlike the absolute nightmare I had trying to get a police check from the RCMP.

You do need to have your addresses including postal codes for the last 5 years (a pain in the butt since I moved a lot as a university student).

CanadaMedical Exam at Woking Clinic Vancouver Experience!
BTW this medical is a joke. I've had more thorough exams for a cold. If you're worried though bring your records and ask them how you should write it down.

CanadaMedical Exam at Woking Clinic Vancouver Experience!
They don't care about surgeries unless you stayed overnight. I believe it even says wisdom teeth are exempt from the list. I had exploratory surgery (Lap) on my abdomen but was released the same day. I asked the nurse if that needed to be listed and she said no. I did *not* bring records with me. I have a weird pain condition that has no diagnoses but is controlled through medication. I never mentioned it because my specialist said it's not a "condition" and told me I didn't need a letter. If you ramble on and on like me it's best to just say nothing instead of opening a can of worms.

That said, don't lie either.

CanadaEmergency Return to Canada before AOS
Sorry to hear about your mother.

I was thinking, what if you and your fiance get married (legally) and file for AOS and AP (emergency AP if need be) and plan for your "big" wedding as usual? I know my fiance and I are worried about money and want me to be able to get a job ASAP so we're getting legally married once I get there and then we will have a bigger wedding later on.

That way you don't have to feel like you "rushed" your wedding, but can take your time planning an enjoyable event but still able to go visit your mother if necessary?

It may not be your ideal decision, but probably the best one given the circumstances.

(big hugs) :)

Oops I didn't read that you already decided to get married on friday... Good luck!

I'd still email. As I said, it may not accomplish much but I don't think people should be disrespectful like that.

Don't worry about your husband, Canadians are tough and fairly thick-skinned. I'm sure he will be just fine :)

I would fire off an email to her employer about what happened. It may not accomplish anything but whoever is in charge should at least be aware of her despicable comment towards you.

CanadaOdd Question, Moving to Canada with Wife who has Conditional Green card?
I'm not entirely sure of the details of this but I know I've seen others mention situations about going home/living other places. To maintain your wife's green card she would have to live in the US the majority of the year.

Sorry I can't help much more than that, but I'm sure others will.

CanadaVancouver k1 Still waiting for Visa......

Nope, we haven't heard anything except for when I emailed them. I wish I could just go to Vancouver and pick it up! I guess there's no hope that they would let us do that?

Hmm.. yeah I don't know. Like I said I got emails from them. Maybe check his junk email folder??

Emails are like this:

Dear XXX,

Your passport has been picked up from the Consular Section and within the next few days you will be able to pick it up at:

DHL Burnaby HOLD FOR PICKUP
5499 REGENT ST
BURNABY, BC

(This is the first email I got, sent OCT 12, my interview was OCT 7 it also included a Waybill number and a tracking link)..

Did he select a DHL location for pickup?

Inky is probably right though. They did seem to take their time getting things done regardless of holidays.

CanadaVancouver k1 Still waiting for Visa......
It took almost 3 weeks for me to get my passport from the Vancouver consulate. I think there was a delay due to Canadian Thanksgiving, then about 1.5 weeks was my being lazy and eventually getting them to deliver it from my DHL pickup.

Tell your fiance to check his email though, I had an email from the Vancouver consulte/DHL almost every step of the way. If not, check the website where he booked his interview. If there is a Waybill Number it should be available for pickup.

Let me know if you have any further questions!

CanadaJust Engaged - Best Course of Action?
I didn't think they did K3 anymore. If you file for K3 it just ends up switching to CR1 anyway? Not sure, but that's my understanding from reading posts on here.
dukeandduchessFemaleCanada2011-11-24 04:49:00
CanadaJust Engaged - Best Course of Action?
You can still travel to the US while the K1 is being processed. You do need to prove that you have "strong ties" to returning to Canada, which is something you would have to prove if you got married as well. Once the K1 visa is issued, you can only enter once on that visa so once you have the visa you wouldn't be able to travel back and forth.

My fiance and I filed for a K1 because it seemed "easier to prove" since you only have to demonstrate that A) you have a real relationship and B) that you've met within the last 2 years. CR1 seemed a lot more daunting to us because we haven't lived together/don't have shared bank accounts... Anyway, it's kind of just personal preference.

Good luck!

Canadamedical in montreal need more info

why would i need my medical records again i thought after my conditional residency was up i would just have to prove that ive been living with my husband and i'm not set on montreal it would just be easier since there making me interview there anyways

I believe she thought you were doing K1 not CR1. If you're interviewing in Montreal I believe you would have to do the medical first, and then interview. I know with the Vancouver consulate people who didn't have their results before the interview had to deliver their medical to the consulate. Not sure how this works for CR1/Montreal.

When I went most people just brought their kids with them. I was there first thing (about 5.45am) and since you're taken in order I was out of there shortly after 8am and picked my test up at 1.30.

Anyway, I guess if you have your heart set on Montreal my advice doesn't mean much.

My fiance didn't come with me, but I did see someone's fiance waiting while she was being interviewed.

Besides if they don't let you in there's a starbucks coffee right inside the same building so you could wait there.

CanadaVisiting back home!
You can take things with you at your first entry and/or have your personal belongings come in after. So yes, your mom can bring things for you. The person at the consulate warned me to be careful who you pick to bring your stuff because *you* are responsible for their contents. (hopefully your mom won't stash illegal drugs in there.. )

CanadaPregnancy & Benefits in the US vs. Canada?
Yeah I read on the BC government website that EI pays for your Maternity leave. I don't plan to get pregnant for a year or more (we want to spend some alone time together) so I doubt they would let me claim it through EI, which seems weird because I should be able to get it whenever I get pregnant. I think I'll definitely contact someone and ask about that.

Thank you everyone again for the excellent information!

CanadaPregnancy & Benefits in the US vs. Canada?
First of all, I'm not pregnant. My fiance and I want to start a family in a few years and I had a few questions for those of you who know more about, well, everything!

I know having kids is expensive vs. Canada and have researched most of the costs associated with hospital vs. home births .. My main question (which I can't seem to find some sort of concrete answer for) is what about Maternity leave? Does it exist in the US? This might be a really stupid question but I asked my fiance and he kind of went "Huh?"

Maybe a guy thing, who knows. Anyway, I was hoping someone could explain Maternity leave in the US. Does it exist? How long? Company specific?

Thank you in advance. :)

CanadaHomesickness

I do  . I enjoy sending and receiving cards and letters from my friends and family. I always send out Christmas cards too. Allow a week to 10 days for them to get to Canada from the US, though. That's how long mine always seem to take.

One thing I am definitely going to miss is how my Dad used to cut out newspaper clippings and odd sorts of announcements and photographs from back home and then send them to me. It was always fun to receive that envelope stuffed full of clippings with the notation on the front addressed to Customs: "Newspaper clippings - no commercial value":) Some of them would have his 'commentary' written on the article or editorial and it felt so nice to have something arrive in the mail from home - like I was being brought up to date on all the important news that isn't addressed in the US. Sadly, my Dad passed away 2 weeks ago :( so I won't be receiving any more 'newsy' envelopes. This is a different type of homesickness. While he was still alive I knew I could always go back 'home' for a visit. Now that is no longer possible. 'Home' won't be there anymore.

Aww Kathryn that's so cute. Made my heart melt a bit because my grandma used to do that with me too. She moved into a nursing home a few years ago and I definitely miss getting them :( Sorry to hear about your dad. (F)

CanadaHomesickness

Whatever you do, DON'T listen to our National Anthem, LOL. Sounds weird, but you will be bawling like a baby..... I didn't think it was possible, I mean, how many times have we heard it right?

lol.. I thought this was so funny and cute!

I think once you settle in and get a job/daily routine the homesickness will go away. I've never been super attached to my home or being near my family (I know it sounds cold, but I have my reasons) so I'm not sure if I will get super homesick or not. I always miss being around my mom but I've only seen her about once a year for the past 5 years so it won't be much different for me. I definitely won't miss my job and most of my friends live all over the world so not many are left here. I'm in kind of a weird limbo living here and I'm excited to start my life in the US with my fiance!

They only care if you were refused entry into the US due to a criminal conviction. They charge more for examining people who have convictions and they only do it on certain days.

This does not apply to you.

You already paid online. You do not have to pay again.

The medical needs to be paid for on the day of the medical by bank draft or money order which you can get in about 5 minutes at your bank.
