Gill......that picture in your avatar is absolutely beautiful!

Thanks Girl,

I love this picture of them! They look so happy! I think I feel it for Nicole (Sean's Fiance) the most...because I can SOOOO relate! I just can't imagine your wedding day, which is suppose to be one of the best days of a woman's life... turning into your biggest nightmare in such a horrific way!

I feel my eyes well up every time I think of it!

Does anyone know the email address for the Embassy in Kingston? I want to contact them to inquire if they are wheelchair accessible. I am planning ahead just in case my broken ankle is not totally healed by then.

Has anyone's SO doing the IR/CR process, ever attended the interview by themselves and has a good outcome? I want so much to be there and I am hoping and praying I can attend.

Thanks

Hey Forbes,
Try these 2:

consularkingst@state.gov
kingstonivinfo@state.gov

I used the Kingston one...but someone told be their email got returned!

Good luck,

Hello my VJ peeps I just wanted to stop by and say hello. I'm here @ working and they dont' want us on the email, or internet they don't even want us on our cell phones. If we have to be on the cells phones we can't be on the floor but then again i can't leave my desk before Fidel Castro comes looking for us in the bathrooms.

Well i'm still waiting on welcome letter, social security card and green card for my husband should I call to find out what's the hold up?

well let me get back to work.....I be so tired when I get home to get online. First thing when I pick up the kids and my husband they talking about what's for dinner. I'm not used to cooking every single night before my husband came I made sure I fed the kids @ my parents house. Now 9 o'clock @ night i'm just finishing cooking.

I need to find a better way of making my nights more relaxing.

Dimps,

My darling ...I feel your pain! What I did before Ken arrived was do one big cooking on Sunday...make all the meals for the week and freeze them! Then I'd take them out before I left for work and by the time I'd get home it was just warm and serve!

I know it's a lot of work for a Sunday...but trust me ...when everyone is seating down to eat at 6:30pm during the week it's a beautiful thang!

Gill

Did you set a wedding date? whistling.gif

Oh Gurl... I was just telling JG this mawning everytime we set a date...someone doesn't like it or won't be here!! I am at the point where I just want to say 'f' it let's just go do this dyam thing by ourselves!! But, I can't cause both families would kill us! Mine loves an excuse for a party...so they are looking forward to it! Although it will not be big to-do...we started with 5/23 (18 months to the date that we met)...but that's Memorial Day weekend and everyone has made plans. Then I said 6/1/08 after church with a brunch to follow...Nope...they want Saturday night party...So now I'm thinking bout 6/14/08!

Can't do it in the next 3 weeks cause my 2nd job (1800-flowers) will be on and popping for Mother's Day! Have to do it before 6/18 cause my Dad is going to Florida for a month and our 90 days are up 7/1/08! Trust me...I am so over calling Ken my 'Fiance' ...mi waan fi call em mi husband arready!! It is a special day...but neither one of us are super fussy! We just want a small chapel wedding with some music and food afterwards!

Hey Gill,

What's going on this Sunday morning. Just finished a plate a fritters, fry fish and bammi (what a combo).
JAX I had a C-Section also, I didn't take any of the pain meds, because I was nursing, so I just dealt with the pain. The gave me STAPLES mad.gif WHICH I told them I didn't want. It hurt like HELL to have them removed. That was my second C-Section, but the second time around I was blessed with a beautiful boy. Like Gill said, take your time. But you must move around. I made the mistake the first time and just stayed in bed and GAS nearli kill mi. With my second C-Section I was walking around latter that night. The nurses were yelling at me, but I didn't care. I didn't want to feel the pain I was feeling the first time around. I'm hoping and praying that God will bless me with a second child. It was a battle to get my son here.

Hey Sweets,

Great bellys tink alike laughing.gif...Ken made me some Fritters w/ hardo bread this morning with REAL cocoa Tea! I'm sorry...but I LOVE MY MAN!! luv.gif (However, my behind has gained 5-8 lbs since his arrival mad.gif )laughing.gif laughing.gif

Gill

I have tried a dozen times to make hardo bread and it never comes out right!! Will he share his recipe??

No problem Isles...

Get into your car and drive to your closest Jamaican Bakery...take out $5.00 and tell the man/woman behind the counter, you'd like a hot fresh Hardo Bread please...Presto whamo ...done! laughing.gif laughing.gif laughing.gif. Ken tried baking it here ONCE...it was like Hardo DOUGH!!! YUCK!! We're lucky we happen to have THE BEST hardo bread IN THE WORLD right down the road from Ken's place!

Yes, I did say THE WORLD!! Even Ken admitted that he had NEVER had Hardo bread like this before! Gurrrrrl, if we get that dyam ting straight out the oven...we know to buy two...cause the 1st one ain't making it home (10 minute ride!) laughing.gif laughing.gif.

Bless,
Gill

rofl.gif Okay - what's the name of the bakery? They will have to fed-ex it to me!!! There is NO Jamaican anything anywhere around me. Although I did notice the local Wal-Mart was selling "real" Jamaican Beef patties in the freezer section. I got a chuckle out of that.

hehehehehe laughing.gif ...OK, Isles... I'm sorry...I forgot that you are upstate. How far are you from NYC proper?

Gill
P.S.- Yeah our local Wal-Mart has started selling Grace products too!!

Tonisha

Hey Ton-Ton,

If you don't mind I'll post publically (sp?) to help out others going through JFK! Ok, Ken & I went to the SSA the next day and all they really needed was his passport with the visa & EAD stamp in it! The EAD stamp is a tiny stamp placed on Ken's I-94 (I think). You fill out the SS-5 at the SSA office. That's it! But make sure you tell Dave to ASK for the EAD stamp at JFK!! Sometimes DHS forgets to give it to them!

Oh, HELL no!

That's what about 20 plus people repeated. My cousin's dad got up and walked off. His brothers had to pull him aside and talked to him. He returned to the room and changed his shoes. He should have know better he's 38 years old. His excuse (he needs to be comfortable it's his day also)...I understand it's your day too, but come on. It was bad enough the tux he was wearing made him look like a damn PIMP...down to his hat with a big GREEN feather sticking out the side of it. It was damn near 100 degrees outside too.

I wish everyone traveling this weekend a safe and bless-ed journey. Enjoy yourselves an return safely.

Lawny, I received some very sad news this morning. Could I ask you to pray for one of my good friends and a VJ Sistren that had a miscarriage overnight. She used to be more regular on the thread, but hasn't been on in a while now. (Not JALOVE or KimKim...don't want to alarm anyone). Please send out an awesome prayer for her and hubby to have the strength to move pass this painful time in their lives!

Thanks Chica...have a great day Fam.

heart.gif,

Heavenly Father; Gill/WE all pray for her and her husband so that they will find some relief in knowing that we're all thinking and praying for them. I know words may be comforting at this time as her friend deal with her loss, but nothing is more comforting than knowing that you will provide the reassurance that she needs. I pray that you hold her close to your Dear God...don't only heal her body, but heal her emotionally; and Lord, please guide her husband so that he will be there for her and help them get through this together. I also know that you will bless her again Dear Lord. Things happen for a reason and you know best. All these things I ask in your son's holy name. AMEN...AMEN...AMEN.

Gill --

I've been through miscarriages several times...if she wants to link me, she can. Some people can deal with it and other it takes a long time to heal.

Beautiful..thanks so much Lawny...I will let her know.

Hey Tre.....

Does Marcel still work at HI? If not, who knows someone that works at Holiday Inn Sunspree in Mo Bay?

I heard rumor all employees got letters stating their services are no longer needed. Andre's mom said she heard they were picketing in front of the hotel in protest and blocking all guests from entering and exiting. She said they called in the police.

Only problem I have with that story is if they fired all the employees, how did they have guests at all? I am thinking maybe they got letters stating WHEN their services would no longer be needed and it coincides with what I heard before.

Anyhow, I need some confirmation and we can't get a hold of Richard. Anyone know anything?

I think it is just the beginning, Gill. I can't help but worry what will happen to the rest of them between now and January when the hotel changes hands and what happens after.

What sickens me is they are so underhanded about everything. There is no warning for anyone.

I hear you JG...Ken was telling me that he has friends that have worked for that resort in one way or another for over 20 years...and this is the thanks they get! That's just not right!

All you ladies that are going to remove conditions soon, make sure you send it in 90 days before the GC expires. Anyhow, I need some confirmation and we can't get a hold of Richard. Anyone know anything?

Mawning Family,

Ken just spoke to his firend Sean yesterday that works at HI and he didn't mention anything like that. I'll ask Ken to make some more calls tonight and ask around. I did hear about some sort of severence package negoiations that was due to HI employees since they switched from HI direct to Crystal (contractors) in 2004 going around. You know me...I was like..."Kenny Dhhhharling....yuh ah git henny $$$ from dat!?" laughing.gif He was going to call his 'Union' rep "Portia' today to find out!

Has anyone heard from Jason? Did Marla make it to Atlanta ok last night?

Busy catching up I assume.. blush.gif blush.gif

Marla did make it to the airport ok, other than the flight being delayed by 2hrs. She said she had no problem with customs or immigration and made it through very easy. We made it home about 2:30am and we were very tired. My son (8yr) met her and Amoy (3yr old step-daughter) for the first time and he really liked them and they liked him.

Next morning I made her breakfast in bed, then we went shopping. Went to the Jamaica food store, then to Wal-Mart. Marla loved Wal-Mart, she said it was big and very good selection, I had to tell her we could'nt buy the whole store.

Everything is going great, Marla said she loves it here so far. But I can see there will be alot of adjusting to do. She is cold here (which it was only 68 here yesterday). Also, she says it is pretty here and very spacious, she could'nt believe all the roads we have and the traffic. Anyways, she met my 2 brothers yesterday and tonight we are going to my mom's house then to Red Lobster and tomorrow we are going to church.

We both are so so happy that this day has arrived and we feel like our lives are complete and we can go forward. I can truly say that we are in love!

Also, the best thing is we don't have to talk on the phone to each other.

WOW!!! I HAVE MISSED ALOT!! CONGRATS J.!!!

WELCOME MARLA!!!

Hola Family,

I hope all are well, trying to catch-up on some reading! Been a little bit of a crazy week the aftermath of 1800flowers Mother's Day-non-deliveries & the end of the semester! ! But Thank G-d, it's all behind me now!

Yes, to a point. First of all, he had to be able to support himself in JA and to take care of some expenses while I was there visiting. If he didn't have a job, I doubt I would've put up with it.

Then, I had to have the gut feeling that he would work here just as hard as he worked there. I knew he probably would not start out making the salary I would've liked; but that there was potential.

My husband found had job with decent starting pay, has moved up 4 raises in the last year and 4 months, has moved up one promotion, and is set for another raise in 4 months, along with a promotion soon after his training. He also carries his own health, dental, and eye insurance.

My husband has not disappointed me.

Very true JG!! You have to see the potential. Sometimes women date men that are plain an simple good for nothin. If you met and he wasn't doing much for himself...how can you expect him to all of a sudden become this head of household husband...its not gonna happen....at least not with alot of work. I know good and well that I could NOT date a man without a job...i don't care...aint gonna happen. I am used to good men in my life beit my g.father, father, brothers uncles, and there is just no way that I can date a man not meeting that criteria. He don't have to be pulling in big bucks or nothing, but he has to have that dirve to want to get out there and help support his family. As long as he has that we're all good.

Well said Lita! I totally agree with both you and JG! Look, HI wasn't paying Ken big bucks...But I saw my man wake up everymorning han tek em ras tuh wuk! One of the things that attracted me to him was his Ambition!! Bwoy, after being married to a man that thought the world owed him something & him looking for a reparation check from Uncle Sam for 8 years...I knew I could NEVER do that again! Even if he doesn't have it all...just the drive tuh bus ras and earn it all was good for me.

So far Ken has lived up to his words. He told me "Gill, when mi come hup...mi cyan't siddung fuh nuh 2-3 months...I NEED A JOB!!" I am very proud of my husband!! Considering the huge adjustments he has had to make in the last 5 weeks...he amazes me! I could give a Rat's batty bout what people want to say about Ken's working at a Restaurant! It's honest work and like Granny used to seh..."Hevery nickel mek a mukkle!" He said he wanted to come here to make my life easier...and he has!

Money comes and goes, and comes again...but a dyam good man that gets me...now that is priceless!

Have a bless-ed day ya'll luv.gif ,

Gill

Hey Quanah;

What's up. Listen, I thought about it too, but the thing is you have to start somewhere. My mom came here in 1972 and my dad followed in 1976 (against his will, but he loved his wife). My dad didn't want to come to the states because he worked so hard to get to where he was in Jamaica. He was in his early 20s and he had his own business that was doing very well. We came from a very poor family that struggled to get to where we are now. I remember at my grandmother's house (since she raised my brother and I), we had a kitchen that was made totally out of zinc. No electricity, no bathroom, but we made it and we thank God everyday for what we have.

People ask my dad why he left Jamaica to come here to start all over again and he said he loved his wife and didn't want to be away from her. Things worked out for us though, my dad was able to build his dream home in 1982 and we're constanly upgrading or adding another room on to it. My dad had to start over when he came here and he had to work for someone. He's never worked for anyone before that and he said it was very difficult. But he did what he had to do to provide for his family so that we could all be together again.

I'm the same way. I cleaned hotel rooms to get through the first 3 years of college. The last year I got an office job. I don't owe any school loans and I choose to do it that way.

Baby girl, life is a struggle. It's really up to you if you want to deal with it. My friends here in the states and the ones that have men in Jamaica go back and forth with arguments about money.

So, if I have to choose love and happiness over money.......mi we tek di loving...di money can come latah

EXCELLENT ADVICE LAWNY!!!! good.gif

I know I am being inpatient but dang, I'm so ready for her to be here by this weekend.

IMO J., Yes it does. Ken decided to pick his up from Airpak MoBay and they called him and told him to pick it up in 6 days!

It should be coming soon...Hang tight...at least you know she WILL be coming! biggrin.gif

According to your time-line - Ken got his visa 9 days after the interview.

J.,

Airpak called him on Monday to advise him the visa would be available on Tuesday for p/u ...but he did not pick it up until Thursday, because he wasn't leaving JA until 04/02/08!

I had a student say at the beginning of the year (in another class..not mine...3rd grader..keep that in mind)... that such and such (some football player) could be my husband because we have the same last name. then he walks off..comes back and said "well, actually he cant" and I said "why not" and he said "because he is black" and I said "but hunter...I do have a jamaican husband" and he said "nuh-uh..you cant" and I chuckled and said "why not" and he said "because the bible says its wrong"
My students were standing there and all the girls were like "nuh-uh that is not true...the bible does not say that"
I couldnt help but feel sorry for those young boys and girls that are being raised in ignorance....

True Shrewdie,

The same is true on the other side. So many of my girlfriends are financially successful...but are looking for that 'special someone' to settle down with! All I hear is "All the good black men in America are in prison, married, gay or all of the above! " laughing.gif You don't know how lucky you are to have found Ken! (I remind them...He's just as lucky to have found me whistling.gif) Because there is a Black man shortage" No doubt I know there is but...

Then when I tell them that they need to open their search to include ALL men from all backgrounds I get blink.gif...which I dont condone b/c in my view that's reverse racism! You can't DATE someone b/c of their skin color or background??? I'm not even telling them to marry...but DATE...get out there figure out what you want and what you don't! Who knows what G-d may have in store!

Anyway, I hope I didn't offend anyone..it's just my $.02!

A friend of mine just sent this...

Mrs. Loving Passes Away at 68

Mrs. Loving and her husband fought against the state of Virginia to legalize interracial marriage many years ago. Read below.

The Loving Day Project is sad to report the death of Mrs. Mildred Loving, a woman whom, with her husband Richard Loving, successfully challenged and overturned the US's anti-miscegenation law on June 12, 1967. Mrs. Loving passed away Friday from an undisclosed cause at the age of 68.

Mildred was an inspiration to many and especially to us at the Loving Day Project. She was a testament to integrity and humility. She was described as a mild-mannered woman, someone who just wanted to be a bride, not a hero. She and Mr. Loving grew up together in rural Virginia, and married in 1958 in Washington, DC where interracial marriages were legal.

The Loving Day Project will continue our work in memory of Mildred and Richard Loving, and see her passing as a celebration of a life that helped change the lives of many others.

We hope you will honor the memory of Mrs. Loving by participating in the Loving Day project. As always, you can:

U.S. Officials Plan Faster Customs Entry Lanes

5/7/2008 -
A new U.S. government program called Global Entry will allow American citizens and permanent residents to avoid long customs lines when they re-enter the country at selected airports. By paying an annual fee of $100 and passing a background check in advance, these travelers can skip the usual customs lines in favor of expedited clearance lanes, where they can swipe their passports and fill out customs declaration forms electronically. The new system launches June 10 at Houston/George Bush Intercontinental, New York/Kennedy, and Washington/Dulles, expanding to 17 more airports at a later date.

Wanted to share this "The POWER of a SMILE"

In 2000 I was working at a hospital here in Maryland and when I worked the weekend I would see this young couple come in. When I first noticed them the wife looked like she was about 200lbs then as the months went by she had dropped her weight drastically. The last time I saw this couple the wife looked like she weighed no more than 100lbs. I never knew what was wrong with her and never asked (wasn't my place).

Yesterday I was the supermarket and this police officer walked up to me and asked is my name Novelette and I hesitated and said, yes. He started to cry out of control and of course I didn't know what to do. I just gave him a hug, I don't know why, it was just all I could do at the time. Of course people are looking at us like we're crazy. After I got him to calm down, I asked him what was wrong. He said, you don't remember me or my wife, but I remember you. I remember your big beautiful smile and that you and your family are from Jamaica. Now, I have a puzzled look on my face.

He began by telling me about his wife's battle with cancer and that she died 7 years ago (I've not seen this couple since 2000) and of all the people he remembered while she was receiving chemo treatments at the hospital he remember my face the most. He remembered my smile. He said, his wife would look forward to seeing my smiling face and how it brigthen her day knowing how bad she was going to feel after her treatments. We talked for about an hour or so. I'm telling you, I've never know a person to love another like this man loved his wife. They were so young. I think she was 27 at the time she got sick.

Before we exchanged information, he told me THANK YOU...and I said, anytime, you're more than welcome. Sometimes all it takes is a smile to brighten someone's day.

Very touching...and so dyam true!

My OB said the same thing and made me take that sweet wata test EVERY WEEK!!! Cause he could not believe that I didn't have GD!!! ohmy.gif He was like you are the first obese woman I have had that has gained 60 pounds and your sugar remains fine! I don't understand it!

Ken, is the same way. Baby Gurl, you know I love Big Body ooman...suh nuh boddah fi mek dem boddah yuh! When I would meet his family members. They would say...whoa...What a way she nice and fat! Han tell Ken em too mawga! But Ken nuh mawga yuh knoa...it's straight muscle pon dat deh body! wink.gif devil.gif I used to get offended by that...but now I realize it's the culture and Ken laugh it off and say "Yeah Man, like Hamburger han Hot dawg...we just guh together!"

I always said I don't want to be skinny (no offense to slim folks), just healthy...I would be happy as a 14-18 to tell you the truth!

But Lawny, I agree with you and admire you for having such a good body image. Many of us (including myself) walk through life looking for better and not appreciating and flaunting what you've got! YOU GO GURL!!!!! good.gif

Bless,
Gill
