CanadaHow long after approval did you move?
Since our interview is day before US Tday, I assume we would get visa the following Tuesday with Priority Courier (hope!).... planning to leave as soon as visa is in hand for 6 day drive back to Calif. We're taking "Route 66" ...
Married_my_loveNot TellingCanada2006-11-05 18:00:00
CanadaGot my Visa!

he said, oh, well, you'll be kind of rushed then, because you have to get married and use this visa in 3 months.

I said huh??? (Well, I didn't say the word huh??) I just LOOKED like I was saying huh. hehe I said, I'm SURE it's for 6 months, the visa. One entry,90 days after I enter I have to be married....he said, hmmm. I don't think so. My heart by this time was pounding. I mean I'm thinking #######??? Have the changed the process and I didn't know about it???

It always amazes me when I read things like this, that someone working at the embassy would not know the rules of the visa and you do!! What about the folks that don't visit VJ? They would get info like that and think they had to re-arrange their wedding date!!

Congrats it is finally over, and why are they boiling the water in Vancouver?

CanadaDavid and Karen and Leafgal's interviews

Thanks, and I posted a review letting everyone know what happens now when you go for the interview.

congrats on your success!

So I read your review; the changes, is it just that they let in 2 at a time now?
and that you can't wait by the elevator, right?
and what else? different first window? or is that just for K1......

Inquiring minds want to know.

CanadaWOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO!!
OH and another thing!! We purchased the canada post "Priority Courier" ($17.50) envelope instead of the XpressPost, and our visa was home before we were! Next day delivery from Montreal to Ontario and the embassy mailed it the same day as our interview.... Just wanted to post this because I remember someone asking "how long" to get it using CP.

CanadaWOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO!!
Just wanted to pop in and say that we got home late last night (Thurs) wiped out from 10 hrs on the train..... we are leaving in 2 days, scrambling to get all the loose ends tightened up today and tomorrow.

Here's a brief:

* You can't stand and wait near the elevator (J&K can attest to this, they are WATCHING from a camera and they set you straight quite quickly to "step away from the elevator!"), but you still exit from behind...

* They are telling you different windows to check in then previously posted

* They didn't give us a "number" (like C1, 2, etc.) they called us up by name (a bit mumbly too, we were confused, but figured it out)

* The consular was younger than I ever pictured in my mind, very nice man, and felt like we were chatting with a friend; the lady who took our originals was very nice too (even the lady at the cashier window was nice!)

* Don't tick off the security lady with the black wavy hair, she BITES :girlwerewolf2xn:

* Don't wander anywhere outside of the area you're supposed to be in, they are watching you and they will come up and make you feel like an #######! (not to us, but it was witnessed). Sit quietly and follow all directions given!!

* It is true that Canadians with no I-94 are considered d/s and previous overstays don't apply (we were sweating this one)

* They didn't look at our pictures, any relationship proofs, etc.

* There is a lot of MEAT to be eaten in Montreal, and we managed to eat a lot of it (Check out Reubens deli, if you like a meaty sandwich oh my)

* You can get your drink on at Old Dublin Pub on University, the yummiest burger I've had in a while (try the Walsh) and some mmmmmm dark beers too.

* Le Square Phillips hotel is beautiful, $130 cdn but just around the corner from consular, that's where we stayed....giant room, free breakfast (early enough to get to the consulate by 7:15 a.m.!)

Have your stuff in order and you'll breeze right through!!

OK, off to do many things to get out of here in 2 days!! thanks for all the support, we couldn't have done it without all of your help!!

Aaahhh - I have to admit it - I just called the embassy to see if they would give me a December, January, February or March interview estimate - they said January. I don't know why I did that - obviously I would not have had an appt. so soon. But somehow, I feel like I've had some contact - ineffectual though it may be.
Mo

Yeah but Mo, I can't remember who, but somebody here once called and were told "january" and then a short while later got their packet 4 and they had a november. I don't think calling and asking means diddly-squiddly. I think we'd have more luck guessing with a Magic 8 Ball.

I agree, anyone who was doing this process and not computer savvy, or a part of a group like VJ... could you imagine them going all the way to Montreal and having them say Sorry, no handwritten forms?

I also remember someone wrote that they turned in their new I864, and the woman behind counter said NO! you're missing this and this, and she took the new rules and underlined the part that said Notary not needed, etc. Because of that hint, I'm bringing the full instructions of the new I864 with me, in case!

Hi smallcan,
You can't tell if your case is touched in Montreal, but Jersey is referring to the USCIS case status.
case status online

You put in your Case # and it will show dates when the case was last accessed. That is what they mean by touched.

Seems like I've read at least a few threads where someone called, talked to the mean lady who said "4 months" and then shortly after received their interview date. Not saying that talking to mean lady makes things magically happen, I'm just saying that I believe they say 4 months no-matta what. Just so you'll think the worst and be surprised when it happens quicker. If they told everyone "2 months" they'd get 10 xs more phone calls at the 2 month period, right?

As I've mentioned before, you are allowed to request a date, but there aren't any guarantees.

Congrats! Happy for you :)

A little question, when you say your POE was Sarnia, do you mean the "Port of Huron" POE?

Thats the closest POE from Sarnia that I was told when calling customs and I'm planning on going there. My entry will be a little more complicated because I bring a snake with me and with the exportations papers I need a Vet to be present and need to call for my appointment 3 days before I leave.

Resume, If the K-1 part is easy thats gonna be much easier :)
Thanks

Mephys

sorry I wrote sarnia, I was so tired ha ha, yeah I meant Port Huron!! and they were very nice, at least the guy we got, I had papers for my cat but he didn't really have any interest in looking at her or the papers. I imagine a snake might provoke more interest though LOL!!

I wish I could tell you the guy's name because he was just so cool.

So we crossed on Nov 26, does that mean husband should try going to Social Sec soon? He did mark the "checkbox" on the forms saying he wanted the social security assigned but I thought I read he could go in if it doesn't show up in 2 weeks...... maybe it's 3 wks, guess I'll go investigate.

the gas company came today and we have heat YAAAAAAAA!! now we just need furniture, yippppppeeeeeeeee!!!

We are back in California !

Our POE experience (Sarnia) was a total crack up, the guy we had was just really funny. After all the fingerprinting, etc. I asked if he wanted to see our list of goods and he kinda goofed on me. Funny that I got searched a few times in the past, but cruising through with an entire carload and nobody wanted to even take a look inside. (our car was so packed we looked like the beverly hillbillies).

We drove 6 days, during which we got stuck in that heavy mid-west snow storm. It was pretty hairy in New Mexico, we had a car spin out in front of us (double 360, the guy looked really scared), extreme icy road conditions, with 45 accidents on the route between Amarillo and New Mex. OUCH. We were so glad to get thru that in one piece.

Got an apartment this week, pretty amazing since we were house hunting without jobs! Found a really nice landlord who was willing to accept a few months rent in 'good faith' that we'll get jobs soon.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi... and that's the scoop. Movers say we'll have our belongings a few days before Xmas. AWESOME!!!

CanadaHubby having not so good a time with red tape now he's here

Get him to print this out: I-94 (from the US Customs & Border Protection site), and take it into the office to show them that people with immigrant visas don't need one.

OOOH Why didn't I think of that?! I've been busy trying to get a job (which I got YAY) and I started the new job so I haven't been back to read your responses. I did a print screen of the first paragraph of the I-94 so it is REALLY BIG and I printed it and highlighted the "EXCEPT" and "aliens with immigrant visa"

he can't wait to go back and show them that they're out of their heads...!
they really would not believe him that there was no I-94.

and the beat goes on.
Married_my_loveNot TellingCanada2007-01-12 21:30:00
CanadaHubby having not so good a time with red tape now he's here
I just wanted to vent for my canadian husband. His greencard still not here, his social security is so screwed up - after his 3rd visit to Social office where they refuse to help him, they claim he needs to bring in an I-94 (he is cr-1) he explained he doesn't have one, they wouldn't listen.

I've never really seen the guy mad like REALLY mad until this morning after coming home from their office. He also got bit by a spider so he's on the couch with a big swollen leg and I guess we'll find out just how good his "immigrant" healthcare we bought online is if it doesn't get better.

Anybody know if we can just go to another social sec office? Our local office after 3 tries is still blaiming him for their typo (wrong address) and even after speaking with supervisor (who INSISTS that he has an "I-94") I just don't know what our next step is. His greencard is still MIA so I don't know if we just need to wait for that and THEN go back to social?

They gave him a print out with his # on it, but said he has to come back and show this fantasy I-94 before they'll issue the card. :(

CanadaPossible Policy Change in Montreal

I do have to interview again...and then they cancel my K3 visa, so I cannot use it to enter, so I have to go back to my parents' house in Toronto and wait for the mail to arrive and lose a lot of money because of missing work  Again, if they gave ANY sort of notice, I/we could have prepared for it better!

just to let you know, I paid an extra $10 and got the next day delivery prepaid envelope and my husband's package got to our apartment before we did. Next day was really NEXT DAY - so I don't imagine you sitting around for long, it was $18 I believe... Montreal to London ON in one business day. ALSO The consular told us that they've only had one passport ever lost in the mail (at least that's what he said!)

CanadaA messy situation (potentially?)
this is just a cut and paste, but in regards to your wife's greencard status

"Once you are a permanent resident, travel is generally not a problem, provided you have a valid passport from your country of citizenship and your Permanent Resident card. Currently, USCIS is issuing permanent residence cards for 10 year periods. You must renew this card before the expiration date.

If you plan to remain outside of the U.S. for a period of more than six months, it is necessary to obtain a reentry permit before leaving the country. Application for a reentry permit is made using Form I-131 Advance Parole travel document.

If you must remain outside the U.S. for extended periods of time, please note that obtaining a reentry permit or making a return trip to the U.S. once or twice a year for a few weeks will not be enough to maintain permanent resident status. USCIS examines the reasons for the extended absence, the individual's intentions, and other factors establishing the person's ties to the U.S."

Good news, I wrote a nasty-gram to the Landlord(s) explaining I was going ahead with filing the complaint with the Tribunal, and not to FEAR that we have arranged for someone to represent us there (not really, but fun to say) and I got an immediate response and they said they got the check approved Jan 15, and it is "en route" !! !

Yeah, it's funny they told us to call the woman who was going to sublet and ask if she had paid her deposit yet. She said she had already paid it to the Prop Mgr.
We didn't know what we were doing so we didn't know to ask her for the new deposit.

I just filled out the form to ask the Tribunal for help, and got to the end where it says it costs $45 to file the complaint, and we may have to appear at a hearing. :(
now that we're 2500 miles away, that wouldn't exactly work out would it. :crying:

Canadasuggestions how to report (ex) landlord problem (in Ontario)??
We moved Nov 26, we found a renter to sublet our apt., (paid $50 fee for the convenience of breaking our lease). The onsite prop mgr said we'd get back the $750 rental deposit since it is held for last month's rent.

It's almost 2 months now, we've left 3 messages and written 2 emails - all avoided. When I called to discuss the return of the dough, as soon as I mentioned the property address they transfered the call to a voicemail, nobody calls back!!

I have been googling the heck out of this topic, and can't seem to find where I would file a complaint to put a fire under the frickin' property management. I found the Ontario Tenants Rights (lots to read, yep), but not sure who to contact as an advocate since we're in the U.S. now. I'm not even sure how long they are allowed to hold on to that money.

:crying: We could really use this $750 (CAD) right about now

CanadaImmigrating to Canada
I got my visa and perm residence for Canada in just over 3 months, but we were already married. Hubby sponsored me from canada, as "outside applicant" and that is the fastest route. Doesn't work that way (as previously posted) in a fiancee situation. If you do want to go this route, I would consider waiting until you're married because otherwise the US citizen has to apply as an "inside applicant" and it takes a looooooong time. If you want some info in a board situation like this visit roadtocanada.com or settlement.org

good luck

CanadaThings to do to make my Canadian feel at home.
We have adopted the shoes-at-the-door custom, with a little rug pulled off to the side. I also have asked my friends to stop saying "A-BOOT" after he says about, and then following with "isn't that cuuuuute? how he says aboooot?" I don't know that it bugs him much, but being singled out in conversation is silly. I also got us a shared cell phone plan but added $4 per month to his phone to get a discount on his calls to Canada. Hmmm, let's see. OH if there is hockey on, I never ever say "Oh god, not more hockey!" LOL and sometimes if he's working late I'll even tivo a game for him. Now if I could only find Poutine around here.....
Married_my_loveNot TellingCanada2007-01-31 21:50:00
CanadaIdeas on what to do next?

Social Security can't or won't even tell you if a card has been issued?

First time he was there they made a typo. They wrote "th" as his street (we are on "4th") they blaim him for the typo, and they won't help him, give him any info as to whether they did or did not mail one, and I called the 800# for them, they said "he has to go to office that made the typo, we can't correct it" So that was a lot of help (not!).

He was able to finally wrangle the # out of them (printout) but that was about it. 3 times there and each time he comes home very angry (not ez to get this guy angry either). I am thinking maybe he goes to another city? and tries there? Cuz our local one is not caring, and not helping.

Potentially DUMB question. Regarding his CR-1, the original letter came from Texas Ctr, and that is where we mailed the passport copy; Will going to our Local Infopass (Laguna Niguel) work?
