Congratulations on getting things done. As if the stress of going to the Embassy isn't enough, getting car broken into is just so maddening.

Is it possible to think that the "bad guys" know now that people who are going inside can't bring in electronics, and it's a great place for them to look for stuff in cars? I dunno, I don't know anything about crime rate in that area.

Happy for your success, and sorry for the stolen laptop, etc.

CanadaPeace Bridge POE

If any Canadian beneficiary has used the Peace Bridge POE (Buffalo) recently to activate their K-1, I'd love to hear of any tips or pearls of firsthand wisdom. Also, can anyone recommend any moving companies from Toronto to the southern U.S.? Even though I'm selling off all my furniture beforehand, I have too much stuff to use Canada Post or Greyhound. I'm not really keen on hauling a rented trailer either.
Thanks a bunch,
Jo

Look into Broadway Express
you can find many positive reviews about the company on movingscam.com (or net?)
and they are a "flat rate" mover, you buy the space you need, no worries that you'll get jacked at the end of the move like many (bad) companies will do.
broadway express
click on the left "self move estimate"
you load, they drive.

We arrived in Montreal at 3:30 pm checked into our hotel that was awesome (thanks, hotwire.com) and really cheap. The hotel was two small blocks from the consulate.

CanadaFinally in the US

Actually they didn't even bother looking at our proofs of relationship. They didn't ask for photos, emails, telephone bills, plane tickets, wedding stuff or anything. I mean, we were really prepared and had every possible thing we could think of. And then nothing... they didn't ask for anything. Not even the 2005 tax return!

That's weird. Y'know Murphy's Law though, if you didn't bring it they'd have asked for it.

CanadaFinally in the US

We had with us in a plastic bag the following:
1) Our 2 binders of evidence (mostly correspondence between us, and our family and friends)
2) A small photo album (made up of selected photos from the time we met to the most recent pictures of the two of us)
3) My medical.
I also carried an accordion-style portfolio with the originals and copies of paperwork (interview letter and the passport at the very front).

CONGRATS!! Must be a relief it is over.
I see you brought a photo album, but I thought photo albums weren't allowed in to Montreal (?)
was it just because it was small that it was ok?

I mean to post this on the board because I bought a nice scrapbook that I wanted to start putting together, but thought I read you can't bring in things like that.

CanadaBlue Water Bridge
I know you've got tons of replies, but just my 2cents, when I was flying up from california and driving from Detroit airport to see hubby living in London, I had no problems entering canada, it was when I RETURNED to my own country, passport in hand, that I got crummy treatment at Ambassador.

I started using Sarnia/Port Huron after a while and always had very nice treatment there, going either way in/out of canada. I also came across there in June when I came up to be a "visitor" and wait for my PR to take affect. One of the scariest crossings for me, and turned out to be the most pleasant. (scary because I could have been denied entry being that I had a PR in process).

Anywho, I vote for the PtH/Sarnia crossing well over the Ambassador bridge.

CanadaDCF or CR1 Domicle

No i don't under the I864 qualify for domicile.

So I guess what i could do is go to Calgary counsel and file my I-130 and get approved and then go to the US before my hubby get a job so by the time he is contacted by Montreal I would have domicile?

Per the instructions that came with our latest package:

"At the time of your interview the petitioner must be domiciled, or about to move to the United States with you, in order for your visa to be approved"

So I believe you could potentially get all the way to interview stage and then go to the US and get job, establish bank accounts, etc.

How can a petitioner establish a domicile?

When a sponsor has clearly not maintained a domicile in the United States, he/she will need to re-establish a U.S. domicile in order for him/her to be a sponsor. The sponsor may make a number of steps to show that he/she considers the United States his/her principal place of residence. Examples of things he/she can do are given below:

* Find a job in the United States
* Locate a place to live in the United States
* Register children in U.S. schools
* Make arrangements to give up (relinquish) residence abroad
* Other evidence of a U.S. residence

If the sponsor establishes U.S. domicile, it is not necessary for the sponsor to go to the United States before the sponsored family members. However, the sponsored immigrant may not enter the United States before the sponsor returns to the United States to live. The sponsored immigrant must travel with the sponsor or after the sponsor has entered the United States.

CanadaTaking pets with you when you move..

Hey just a quick odd ball question I guess. I was just wondering if anyone has taken their beloved pets with them when they finally were able move to the US and what was required. Was there any qurintiene time( sorry not sure of spelling there). Over all what was your experience at the border. Thanks for the imput. :)

can you clarify what kinda pets?

Here's a list of each kind and what the requirements are.
bringing your pet

I brought my cat "the other way" (canada to us) and just had to show a recent rabies shot. The POE officer didn't even look into her carry bag. I just handed him the rabies form and he said bye bye.

On a funny note, I actually made a typo and the URL said "bringing your poet"

When did the specs become the same? Dang, back in Jan when we filed, we went to a place in Ottawa and they goofed and shot hubby's pics as Canada size and not u.s. and we had to do a re-take. Is this recent news they are now all the same?

Canadaestablishing credit for us canucks
Amex has a program called "Global Card Transfer"
global card transfer

I was told it was easy peasy to move it over. Ok, so as soon as I got to Canada I called and first I talked to India (3 diff people) and they kept telling me "call 1-800-blablah...." and I said ma'am that is the number I called to get you... so they transferred me around 4, 5 times and finally I ended up with a man who knew what their damn program even was.

I then went thru all the steps of transferring my Platinum AMEX to Canada. At the end, he said, "y'know, you shouldn't do this until you're established with a good job". So I never did transfer it (I will when I have this good job he said I'd be getting) since I pay online and have paperless statements I just left the card as-is.

I'm sure you'll have better luck with it!!

I miss my netflix. I used to have about 5 movies a week. Since I got to Canada I tried DVDFlix.ca but it took so long to get the movies it wasn't worth it. I've been battling them for a month over a charge they put on my card.... anyway

Any of you know of any service up here comparable to netflix? (as far as how fast they ship, etc.) ...we're in london ON.

CanadaUsing "Priority Courier" vs. XpressPost from Canada Post

I used priority courier and it got there just fine. The woman at the post office told me that as long as you didn't check the "signature required" box that it would be delivered like normal mail. It still took my package two days to get there, even though it was guaranteed next day delivery, not sure why as it was just going from London. It wasn't a problem with delivery though, it just took them an extra day to get it up to Montreal.

wonder if it is worth the extra $ since they say xpress post is one business day, and you paid for the fancier one and it still took 2 days. hmmmmmmm !
thanks for the info

CanadaUsing "Priority Courier" vs. XpressPost from Canada Post
I searched and found references to sending things XpressPost, but on the Canada post site it shows next day delivery via "priority courier" and it looks like it'll go to a PO box. Will montreal accept that? I know they say no couriers..... just wondering if that is ok?

CanadaNeed some more advice and help if you can.
I wrote a nice letter to my landlord (as I still had 3 months left on my lease) offering him 3 options. He took the nicest one for me.... help him advertise (craigs list) and find a renter, let me out of my lease free and clear. I would think given your circumstances if you needed to do this, they would understand. You could do the sublet too, lots of people post sublets on craigs list as well.

I have been using my ATM up here with my california bank... small fee, not much to baulk at though.

just fyi, I was able to DCF 3 weeks after landing. I am not sure if the one year requirement is a rumor, but they did not bat an eye when I filed........

If you decided to stay here and get married to see him through his treatment, then would DCF filing be an option when you wanted to return to the US? This may be a very naive question and I'm sorry if it has already been thought through.

They could dcf after she got PR

I just wanted to tell you also Lyric, when I came in, I drove in at Blue Water, with my car, and 2 suitcases, I brought SO MUCH stuff to prove I was going to go back (in case my PR was denied) and they didn't ask for any of it. I had my cat with me and I had to remind them that I was supposed to show paperwork for her. I told them I was visiting, but that I had my PR app pending, they let me right on thru. Diff situation, but I just wanted to say coming into canada I never had problems, it was always going back to my own country that I got hassled.

Canada=((((((((( Fiance just found out he has cancer

I have NO clue about Canadian immigration. I've tried many times to get a grasp of it but it completely confuses me. Can you guys help? How does an Outside App work?

Outside is very fast right now (I did it in 3 months) and while it was pending, I came in as a visitor. You would come up and marry, then file from outside using a U.S. address (maybe parents?). We filed April 18, I had the visa July 15. The problem (and difference) between inside/outside is that with Inside you'd be permitted to work while you wait, outside, you wouldn't until you got the PR and then the Social #. Not sure if you have funds to support yourself for that time ? With Inside App you can't travel though.... just wanted you to know that.
Married_my_loveNot TellingCanada2006-10-09 12:26:00
Canada=((((((((( Fiance just found out he has cancer
I'm so sorry this has happened Lyric. :(
You could come here (and other people have done this successfully incl. me) you could have things shipped to you, and you wouldn't have to consider it a permanent thing... maybe just to get thru his treatments.

It just seems so risky to have him come to the states with a pre-exist. condition, you just won't know what kind of help he'll get. You could also file an Outside app, come in while it is pending - (what I did) and then when he is able to come to US you would have PR by then and could do DCF. I am sure your head is spinning, but most important is to get him healthcare coverage!! and he already has it here, and who knows what he'll get in the u.s. without insurance coverage.

Maybe try and just look at it that you're coming here for now, and you'll go back to the u.s. later ?
Married_my_loveNot TellingCanada2006-10-09 12:17:00
Canada=((((((((( Fiance just found out he has cancer
You could in theory come here to visit, marry here, file an "inland application" this is the long route but you would be allowed to work while you wait for the PR. I also know of a couple in which the canadian was on disability and was still accepted as a sponsor. If he was to get on disability here he could still sponsor you. It involves getting married here though. But at least you could work.

I wish you the best in your decision. I can say from personal experience, my father was diagnosed with cancer in the u.s. and he (at that very moment) had no health insurance. He was was treated, but not at the best hospitals, and it was a very bad situation. My family was financially strapped after it was over and my mom had nothing left. My niece is battling cancer now, and even with Child Care Services, they have lost all their money. Her bills are currently in the millions...... I would seriously consider staying where he can get medical attention covered.

CanadaAnyone know a good Candadian immigration attorney?
from a post on RTC, someone who has already received approval in principle, whose husband is on disability

The sponsorship form IMM 1344A Eligibility Assessment Part E, #5 asks if you are in receipt of social assistance for a reason other than disability. If you are disabled, that is the only kind of social assistance that doesn't disqualify you.
Married_my_loveNot TellingCanada2006-10-20 22:10:00
CanadaAnyone know a good Candadian immigration attorney?

She said that we could apply for conjugal spouse immigration for me and once it's done then I would be a permanent resident and could work immediately but it could take 4-6 months if she helped us but longer if we did it ourselves.

This lawyer you spoke with.... ok, first of all Conjugal is the hardest most difficult one to get approved, and it is very often denied. Most people I have read who tried it ended up getting married and reapplying out of frustration.

Second, we drove over the border without my visa approved yet, told them exactly what we were doing, and did not have to lie. I agree with the post that is bad that it was suggested you lie to POE!

and Third, I will try and find you actual posts of people who were able to sponsor while on disability. You just can't sponsor on welfare, as far as I remember.

I know I told you before, but I really encourage you to sign on to roadtocanada.com it is the "VJ" of canada immigration, everyone there is going thru it and very helpful. I still don't think you need to pay a lawyer to do it, but it is of course your choice.

I don't understand the lawyer saying it would take you longer if you do it yourselves, you still have to gather all the stuff... seems fishy to me.

I can't give advice on our experience obviously, haven't been there, but my thoughts on the subject are that I imagine MOST people look nervous, and they're used to it. I also see many post saying it was "anti-climatic" and the build up was for nothing. Relax if you can, try not to drink too much caffeine, try some camomile tea! and soon this will all be a memory you can look back on and think WOW why did I get so worked up?
