United KingdomWhy USA and not UK?
QUOTE (britty @ May 22 2008, 06:17 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Although I am closer to my family in the UK, we made the decision to live in the US mainly due to my husband's work. I was also so tired of watching the UK go "to the dogs" with all the immigration problems, taxes, and left wing spineless government that would have me support all the freeloaders and leeches.

Haha so you decided to move to the US which has... immigration problems, unemployment problems, is going into a recession and is in the middle of a political debate where it looks like we're screwed whatever happens.... whistling.gif

Seriously though, I was kind of sick of all that stuff in the UK too, but remember that the US is certainly not without its problems.

United KingdomWhy USA and not UK?
We had seemingly good reasons but I wish we'd made the opposite decision.

Basically, I'd just graduated from uni and so we starting out, career wise. Ben has a good job with prospects. That was the reason. Oh and the lower house prices and so on.

But I feel that my degree IS worthless here without Stateside work experience, my family is so much better than his and I'm closer to them than he is to his.... and as it stands I'm hoping we can move back to the UK in 5 years or so.

I'm not really homesick, I've lived overseas before and never really felt at home in the UK after that anyway. I just don't like living in the US... or more specifically, Ohio. And if I'd had any kind of good job there things would have been totally different. Ben would have preferred to move to the UK too.

They have a national side! At least that's what I was told. The IOM logo (the one with the 3 legs) is on it.

Back at college we all drove/took the ferry to France and they almost didn't let him in because the French authorities had never seen an IOM passport.

Haha no way! Oh, how things have changed. It has been 10 years since I left!

I used to have an IOM passport, and I had no problem getting anywhere. It's the same as a UK passport except with a different cover from what I can remember! The French authorities are obviously not "worldly" enough laughing.gif

One of my friends from when I studied in London back in the early nineties (when I met my husband) was from Laxey. He has been to visit us since we moved to LA and I was wearing the IOM football jersey he gave me just yesterday.

It is a small world! The IOM has a football team?? When I lived there everyone either supported Man U or Liverpool.

I've only been to Laxey once, saw the lady Isabella (The water wheel)

As for Peel castle, when I turn my bedroom light off at night, illuminated Peel castle is the view from my bedroom window smile.gif

Dawn.

Ooh I went up that water wheel. Once. It was scary! I had a friend who lived just down the street from there, it was a nice view!
Must be amazing to have Peel castle all lit up when you look out the window. I love that castle, I keep telling hubby I'll have to take him to the IOM one day because it's such a great place to visit.

I know, most people get the IOM and the Isle of Wight mixed up wink.gif

I lived in Laxey. It was a pretty nice place to grow up but I haven't been back since I moved at 14. I always wanted to go back and see how much it had changed. My friend told me that people have actually started locking their doors in the last couple of years!

I love Peel though, we used to go the the castle and watch the Shakespeare plays! biggrin.gif

Hiya!

I'm originally from Enfield, North London, moved to The Isle Of Man in 2001, and still here for another 23 days, then my daughter and I will be in SC with Tommy smile.gif

Dawn.

Haha no way, I lived in the good old IOM for 5 years when I was growing up. What part are you living in?

I also grew up in Dorset and Surrey, but I moved from Liverpool. I'm complicated.

Oh and I lived in Belgium for 3 years.

Now I'm in Ohio.... blink.gif

United KingdomHow did everyone meet?
I met Ben at a music festival in Belgium. I was living in Brussels at the time, and he was living in Germany (air force). I was at the festival with my Dutch speaking friends, and I didn't speak it so I was kind of bored.... anyways on the last night we were going back to our tent for more wine when I heard people speaking beautiful English!!

So, we went over to their tent (completely wasted) and ended up hanging out with them all night. At the time I was shamefully drunk and didn't really talk to Ben. We asked where they were from and they said Canada. I'd spent a month in Canada a couple of years back so I asked where in Canada, and they said Lethbridge, AB.... that is the town I spent a month in! laughing.gif - they picked that town because one of the guys was from just over the border in Montana and thought he'd say Lethbridge because nobody would know where that was!

Anyways my friend started dating the Montana guy, and he told us they were really American, and they'd been telling people they were Canadian because they'd gotten attitude from some Belgians when they said they were American. So, they started visiting us in Brussels on weekends and that's when I really started talking to Ben. We started dating about 3 months after we met smile.gif - the military send him to Utah in Feb 05, so we were long distance from then until last August. He's out of the military now biggrin.gif

United Kingdompolice certificate from two countries??
Good luck! I had to do the same when I applied for K-1 as I'd lived in Belgium for 3 years, but I asked a friend to call the commune (she is very pushy) and ask them to mail me one. Which they did. In fact, it was easier to get my Belgian police certificate than it was to get my British one!

United KingdomFirst anniversary :D
So it's almost been a year since hubby and I got married and I am trying to think of good (and non too pricey!) ideas for gifts. I thought I could benefit from all your wisdom and creativity biggrin.gif

Since it's paper, I was thinking of tickets to something but there does not seem to be much going on here.... plus tickets can be expensive. A book maybe, but which book I have no idea, plus we get our books from the library.

I've tried brainstorming but my brain is not doing very well. Help please! star_smile.gif

United KingdomWhat do you miss the most?
Ahhh, proper bread. I had a long discussion about proper bread with my American colleague the other day. Thing is, I'm actually used to this bread now so it doesn't bother me. Cheese on the other hand...

I also miss non-chain restaurants, of which there are very few here. And British curry and the Chinese chip shop.
catrocksFemaleEngland2008-10-23 08:10:00
United KingdomWhat do you miss the most?
Real cheese and pickle sandwiches.

My mum keeps me supplied with pickle (it's ridiculously expensive at the international stores here) but I have yet to find PROPER cheddar. I get some ####### from Kroger but it doesn't even come close.

I also miss Cheshire, Wensleydale, double Gloucester with onions and chives, and this amazing spicy cheddar I used to get whenever I was in Oxford. So, I miss real cheese.

Ooh and treacle tart and real custard.

I've also had the fake Cadbury chocolate which is really Hershey's. I got the fruit and nut bar, it was similar but the chocolate just didn't taste right.

I miss real Easter eggs at Easter, and my family. Is that enough? biggrin.gif

Birmingham - the 2nd city and a great place to live. Bang, slap in the middle of the country, so all the major cities in England are no more than a couple of hours away, and cheaper than both Liverpool and Manchester. I don't have any birth related bias to the area (I was born in Liverpool, raised in Southampton, and spent most of my adult life in London, so I'm a good judge of where's good!) and I love it in Brum - top place, great people.

I don't have any birth related biases either - I was born in Birmingham and raised in Surrey laughing.gif

Whereabouts in Brum do you hail from? I'm currently residing in Acocks Green (where Jasper Carrott was born cool.gif )

Halesowen, but I have family in Perry Barr smile.gif

Liverpool. It's awesome and you're close to Wales, the Midlands, Yorkshire, Scotland (well, 3 hours), Derbyshire.... all places worth visiting. Much cheaper than the south.

Yay Liverpool!

United KingdomBaseball Anyone?
The hubby grew up just outside Cincinnati so therefore we are Reds fans. Even though most of the time they suck. However we did go to a game once and actually watch them win, oh it was a good day.

We cancelled our cable this year though as we were sick of paying $90 for ####### TV, so this year all we can watch is the Cubs as we get WGN Chicago. I haven't got into it, I do love my Reds.

I tried to find red lentils a couple of times to make lentil soup (not strictly British but very popular here) but couldnt find them in walmart or the smaller stores and the lentils I did manage to find just dint work as well.

The other lentils are just not the same as the red ones. I have found 2 places that sell them - our local Indian supermarket, and a huge world market place which sells food from all different countries.

If you have an Indian store or an international supermarket in your area I'd look there smile.gif

United KingdomOfficial HPV Vaccine/New Police Certicate Thread
Just out of curiosity, when did they make it mandatory for women to get the HPV vaccine for AOS?? I filed for AOS not even 6 months ago and it wasn't required then. I guess things move fast!

All I heard about it was when I went to my gynecologist here and she said I could get it if I wanted....

Anyways I was just curious as to when they made it mandatory?

United KingdomUSD-GBP exchange rate
Dammit I didn't even think about this.... I have savings in the UK that I was planning to leave there for as long as possible since the interest rates are way better, but it seems like it would have been better to just bring them over when the exchange rate was 2-1.

Looks like I've lost about $10,000 and I didn't even realize. DAMMIT.

If you have an Iphone or I touch, you can down load the app for about 2 or 3 bucks.....has all the same questions as in the booklet you get during the Biometrics...very convenient.
Or save your 2 bucks and just use the booklet from the FP

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for an up-to-date study guide for the citizenship test. Being a little obsessive, I want to make sure I am totally prepared when I file for citizenship at the end of this month. There are a bunch of guides on Amazon but I was hoping for some advice from people who have purchased similar guides.

Thanks in advance! :)

US Citizenship General DiscussionWho has recently applied for US Passport?
I'm still in the naturalization process so I haven't applied for a passport yet but I'm curious... did many of you apply for the book AND card? Or did you go with one or the other? I guess it depends what travel you plan on doing, but as far as I can see, on the off chance I drove into Mexico or Canada, wouldn't a passport book be enough? Is there a point to the card for people who plan on flying overseas 99 percent of the time? I imagine it's easier to carry around and all but I wonder if that's a reason to pay an extra $30?

Just wondering! Hope you all get your passports soon! :)

Finally, I had an email from USCIS today saying they've scheduled my oath ceremony! It's only been 6 weeks since my interview but I was starting to freak out that I hadn't heard anything. Hopefully I'll get my letter soon!
:)

Wow, I haven't checked this thread in a while but it looks like congratulations are in order for many of you! :)

I'm still waiting for my oath letter and freaking out slightly. It seems like most people who've interviewed after I did have their oath dates already. My IO told me my oath ceremony would probably be June 23rd but I never got a letter... should I be freaking out that something is wrong or am I overreacting??

Congratulations to all new U.S. citizens :)

What is the typical time frame between the interview and receiving the oath ceremony letter? At my interview the IO told me my oath ceremony would likely be June 23 -- next Thursday. It's been two weeks since my interview and since June 23 is only 6 days away I doubt that will be my date if I haven't received my letter yet. Does it usually take a while for the letter to arrive?

DaisyLynn, that's awesome that your husband's oath ceremony is part of the July 4th celebrations. That will make the day even more special and memorable for you all :)

That is good news, saves another drive to to Cincinnati for the ceremony. I'm in the Belmont area, near Kettering. What about you?

Yeah, I was relieved to not have to make the drive again, although I think some people have to drive way further to their nearest USCIS field office! I'm in Miamisburg.

Congratulations on your interview! I am glad to see the N-400 process was quick for you as I just sent my N-400 application yesterday and I too am from Dayton and will be going through the Cincinnati local office.

Thanks! Yeah it was pretty quick and the IO said that the oath ceremony would be in Dayton rather than Cincy. Where in Dayton are you?

:dance:Yaaayy! Today I received the email notification that I have been scheduled for interview!!! Exactly, 43 days after my Biometrics were taken. Same as NYC1984..

The last processing action taken on your case

Receipt Number: ***************
Application Type: N400 , APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION

Your Case Status: Testing and Interview

Your N400, APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION is now scheduled for interview. You will receive a written notice with a time and place for your interview. You should receive this notice within 14 days. If you do not receive this notice within 14 days from June 3, 2011, please call customer service at 1-800-375-5283 for further assistance. If you move, please use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address.

If your case status indicates that you are currently in this step, you have either been scheduled for an interview or are in line to be scheduled for an interview. The amount of time your application will remain in this step will vary by office and is largely determined by the number of cases ahead of yours. The interview notice will have specifics about time, location and anything you will need to bring to your interview. If your application remains pending beyond our normal processing times (as shown below) please contact our national customer service center at 1-800-375-5283.

Please note that not every application/applicant will require an interview. In some instances, an interview is required by regulation and others an interview is requested because USCIS has determined that this is the most efficient means to determine eligibility. For a naturalization application the interview will include your taking the required English and/or Civics tests (unless exempt or waived).

If you have questions or concerns about your application or the case status results
listed above, or if you have not received a decision from USCIS within the current
processing time listed*, please contact USCIS Customer Service at (800) 375-5283.

*Current processing times can be found on the USCIS website at www.uscis.gov under Check Processing Times.

I had my interview today! The IO went through my application with me, then asked me to read "Who is on the dollar bill?" and write "Washington is on the dollar bill." He then asked me the civics questions -- and it seemed like he only asked me 6 or 7. After that he told me my application was approved and I will receive my oath ceremony letter in the mail. He said it was likely that my oath would be June 23rd!

So yay!!! Only one more step to go! :)

:( No updates from the NYC USCIS office. The last info I received was that they were processing cases from September 13, 2010.

Hope you hear something soon, AlmaD!
