To the people I talked to today (Houston fiance and the girl who commiserated with me in the back of the elevator), I hope everything went well for you!

CanadaWhat to Bring to Medical

The doctor usually has a website with the full list of everything to bring. In Vaughn, they request your vaccinations a week in advance to make sure you have everything, but I don't remember the site where we found the vaccines.

I would recommend a doctor's note about your depression, just to be safe.

CanadaHow long to get the packet 4 the Consulate in Montreal ?

It's all by email now, as of October. The initial response you got means they received your email.

I don't think mail would speed things up simply because they're not expecting/requesting information by mail anymore.

CanadaHow long to get the packet 4 the Consulate in Montreal ?

You're on the right track! Our response for P4 took 5-6 weeks, which is consistent with people who sent it around the same time.

Other people will tell you that you should have a response within a few days. A majority of those people did not send by email, and the timeline is different now.

CanadaOne question about medaical exam in Montreal

We stayed at Le Square Phillip from Sunday night to Saturday morning, so I'm not the one to ask about cheap pricing. I loved the hotel though, and it was super close to the consulate. We decided to make a vacation of it, so finding a cheap hotel wasn't much of a priority for us.

The results take three days. If I remember correctly, you will receive the results on Thursday if your exam is on Monday. Brian ended up going to Vaughn instead, so I would double check when you call.

Canadamontreal interview date

Show up at O'dark thirty to get a good spot in line. Worst case scenario you have to come back at your scheduled time. Best case scenario you're out the door by 9am.

Yes, bring a passport. You'll basically just sit in a chair. Can't bring a phone or anything to keep yourself busy, so enjoy staring at the informative posters the consulate has.

As the fiance, I went to all the windows with him. You still get to be a part of everything, even if they're focusing on the Canadian citizen.

Canadamontreal interview date

My fiance's interview was March 28th. We arrived at 7 AM, and we were the first ones there. They were fine with me accompanying him, and it turned out to be better because we were dumb and forgot the letter of intent!

It was lightly snowing on our interview day, so I doubt people wanted to be outside for long, but we were fine.

There was a couple behind us that was able to snag an early number (A2 or A3, I believe) by getting on the elevator quickly, despite being further back in line.

CanadaK 1 Visa - Ottawa, Ontario

I think that asking your parents or bridal party to spread the news to family and friends that you would like a close knit wedding and for them also to say you can't afford much because of immigration and limited finances is not rude.  It's hard because etiquette says that you shouldn't say this yourself, but I told my mom and my aunt (who helped with my wedding plans) that I just couldn't afford things like a wedding reception and I needed the guest list to be as small as possible, and they spread the word.  My family is understanding about that sort of thing because everyone has had hard times.  My husband wasn't working but had enough savings to support himself.  I was a single parent.

We had a BBQ the night before the wedding and a lunch the next day.  My mom and step-dad were awesome and paid for my dress ($250) and the lunch.  People came to the lunch expecting to pay for themselves so that was a nice surprise for everyone.  It was at a nice restaurant but because it was lunch we got 3 course meals for $15 per person.  I know catering can be cheaper than that but then you have to pay for a place to have it! wink.png   I probably had to do the most driving out of everyone to be honest, but my one cousin did drive 6 hours.

Nothing wrong either with having a very informal civil ceremony with parents and siblings (or just parents) and having a larger party for your 1 year anniversary when you have established yourselves.

Just to add on to this, my fiance and I are planning on doing a courthouse ceremony and then dinner with my mom, brother, and his best friend who is flying out for the ceremony. We're going to have a big lunch with both of our families next summer so that they can see our new home and his new life in America :)

CanadaNVC to Montreal (K-1)

We got our NOA-2 on August 1st. We got a letter dated September 24th saying that they were forwarding our case to Montreal. Everything about our case was sloooowwww!

CanadaAttending the interview? (sponsor)

I attended the interview, which turned out to be good since we're morons and forgot to write a letter saying I would marry him with 90 days of his arrival. We made a vacation out of it, and it was amazing to be there to hear his approval firsthand. I was so excited that I almost forgot my coat haha.

But, it's not required in Canada.

CanadaBirth Certificate for Interview

My fiance used his short form birth certificate in Montreal, and we didn't have any problems. If you can get your long form and want the peace of mind, go for it, but I don't think it's required. He was born in Newfoundland, if that makes a difference.

Just wanted to add that we booked the medical and interview. (see my signature) Montreal seems to be pretty good right now. Good luck!

Ugh, I'm so jealous! Montreal took forever for us. But, it meant more time to save up, so I guess we'll look on the bright side of things.

Canadatimeframes

We filed our paperwork May 1st. NOA by mid-May (the banker filled out the cashier's check incorrectly, so we were a tad behind). NOA2 on August 1st. NVC forwarded our case to Montreal on September 24th. We didn't send in P3 for another few weeks after we could because Brian wanted to have everything ready just in case (I think it sent mid-November). Thanksgiving happened, and it took almost 6 weeks to get P4. Then, it took a few weeks to actually get an appointment. We booked for the end of January, but Brian couldn't get a medical in time, so we pushed it out to February 27th. Then the consulate changed it to the 28th. Then they changed it to the 14th with no warning, so we had to reschedule entirely for March 28th where we finally got approved. He moves here next Monday.

All in all, it took us about a year from start to finish. We were some of the first groups sending in our P3 by email, which was horrid because we all had really long wait times. BUT, I think they have gotten faster.

Honestly, I would keep extending your job for at least 6 months minimum. You do have approximately six months to move after receiving your visa (it counts from your medical), even though most of us want to be reunited immediately.

If you're K-1, you choose your interview date. It's usually a couple months out.

There won't be an expiry date, per se, but the expiry date will be a year from issue.

---

For K-1's t's best to get this as close to the interview date as possible as it will need to be current for the adjustment of status.

If it's not current for the AOS (hypothetically), what happens then?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsCan we wait before submitting DS-160

I would send it in now, considering that most interviews are a couple months out.  I don't think it would hurt to wait, but it would certainly add to your total time apart.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsHow long do you wait?

We mailed it in May 1st of last year and got a response within 2 weeks about a mistake in our payment. After resending it, our NOA1 was sent within a couple of days. We got the NOA2 on August 1st, but the case wasn't sent to the Montreal consulate until the end of September. We didn't get the 3rd packet right away, so we kinda dropped the ball on sending it until beginning to mid November. We received Packet 4 at the end of December, and we scheduled the interview for late March.

It's a lengthy process. Be prepared :(

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsI-129F timeline- looking for advice

My fiance and I filed last May, and we don't have his interview until February, which is later than we planned. Other couples have been approved faster than they expected, which put a hiccup in their plans. Personally, we decided to wait until we were financially comfortable, and the extra time has really been a benefit to our savings. It might not be the best approach for everybody, but we chose to spend a little extra time apart so that his time spent unemployed would be easier.

If you have somebody willing to cosponsor if necessary and you're comfortable with the amount of money you will have (and it sounds to me like you have a good job), I say go for it. But, it all comes to personal preferences, unfortunately.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresHELP HELP - I Forgot To Include $340 Payment for I-129F Form

Just curious why a banker would think he knows anything about the fees for USCIS?

It was my first time using a money order instead of a personal check ( I wanted the receipt), and she reassured me that 340 plus a 5 dollar fee meant that writing it as 345 was correct.

They'll mail it back to you. My idiot banker wrote the money order out for 345, not 340, and told me that was the correct way to do it. My petition was returned with everything in it, and we haven't had any issues since :) It just delays everything a couple weeks.

When I went through my Skype messages, I found the easiest thing to do was to slowly increase the time, if that makes sense. Do one week, then two weeks, then one month, etc. If you do it pieces at a time, Skype is less likely to crash.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresTime lines...any chance of Summer 2014 wedding?

My fiance and I are currently going through the Montreal consulate. We filed a K-1 last May, and we're still in the process of trying to schedule an interview. A summer wedding isn't highly likely given how back up they are (it took a month to process packet 3), but one can still hope they'll get their act together

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresHow long did you know your fiance before you filed your I-129F?

We met online in April/May of 2010, starting officially dating in January of 2012, and he proposed in January of 2013. We filed our 129F on May 1st, 2013. We probably should have applied sooner, but we were naive about the process and thought it would only take 4-5 months. We wanted time to save up a little extra money, and the consulate sure has given us that time :P

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresvisiting while on K-1 petition

Throughout the K-1 process, I've just flown out to see my fiance (he's Canadian, I'm American). While there most likely wouldn't be any issues with it, we just wanted to be safe. We continued to see each other because we love each other and can't take too much time apart, but it also continues to show a "real" relationship.

There's no shame in long distance being a strain on the relationship. I can't imagine going eight months without seeing my fiance, and it would certainly be hard regardless of the reason.

However, as suggested above, having a letter of employment and return ticket will certainly be useful when going through immigration if she can't visit you.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresMedical Examination question

I believe within a month is usually recommended for the medical, so you should be fine. How long the results take varies from office to office. I know the one in Montreal requires three full days to return the medical. I would just call the office where you're having your medical and verify that you'll have your paperwork in time for interview.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresAffidavit of Support

List your current annual income. If that comes from 2 jobs, then combine the annual income from both. You can add an attachment to list both jobs. Provide letters of employment and recent pay stubs from each of those. Your current income will meet the requirement and your past income from your taxes will show you met the income requirements then too, so that is a plus for having stable income levels.

Thank you! So, to be clear, I just put my annual income based on what I made from my current jobs in 2013? Do you think it will be an issue that I make most of my money from tips?

Kinda confused? Have you filed your 2013 taxes aready?

I'm still waiting for my W-2, so I haven't filed them yet. I plan on filing them as soon as possible to show my 2013 income.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresAffidavit of Support

I'm currently getting ready to fill out the affidavit for my fiance's interview in March, but I'm not sure how I should put the annual income. I've been working two jobs since August 2012, but I changed one of them last May. My 2013 income will show the combination of working all three jobs, which shows that I have made more than enough for the minimum requirement. But, my 2014 income will obviously be different since I'm working different jobs. I assume I should put my 2013 income down, but should I indicate somehow that my 2014 will still be sufficient? I work in two restaurants, so my income is mainly tips (I declare everything). I plan on bringing my ITR from last year as well as pay stubs from both this year and last year to show that I am financially able to support my fiance.

Long story short: my 2014 income will be different from 2013 but still sufficient. How should I put this information on the affidavit?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresValue in going to the interview with fiance

I plan on attending the interview with my fiance (Montreal), even if they won't let me be in the interview room with him. Since he'll find out immediately, I don't want to find out the news from a phone call. We'll either be celebrating or crying, but it'll be done together :P

In my opinion (not based off experience), it can only be positive. It shows faith and validity to the relationship, and it shows the petitioner is financially stable enough to afford the flight.
