Philippineschanging my last name...
QUOTE (Sheryl&Robert @ Dec 3 2007, 07:48 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
hi guys..

Me and my husband just got married last Nov. 17, 2007... yes.gif kicking.gif We are now preparing to apply for AOS ... what we want to know is regarding of changing my last name to my husband's last name before filing AOS or better to change it after filing AOS because we're thinking that if i change it now it will affect with my papers/documents for AOS...

Hope to hear from u guys...

We need your help! helpsmilie.gif

THANKS!!!

Sheryl

You have to change your name on your AOS because whatever name you will use in your AOS application that will appear on your Green Card and it will cost you $300+ to change it later. It will not affect your documents and you have the Marriage certificate to prove that you are allowed to change your name. Goodluck

PhilippinesMiddle name to be used when filling up adjustment of status form
QUOTE (niceguy26 @ Dec 3 2007, 06:43 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
we actually have a problem.. on our I-129f forms we accidently left off her surrname (philippines middle name) and used her 2nd name as her middle name. We didn;t realize until we got our NOA2 for some reason... Her birth certificate shows all 4 names. FIRST FIRST MIDDLE LAST (middle being her mothers maiden name)

NOA2 shows *FIRST* *2ndFIRST as middle* *LAST* (only 3 names) and yes it was our fault..

Now we are worried that when she gets her passport it will show her moms maiden name as her middle name instead of the 2nd part of her first name (which we accidently filed as her middle name) if that makes sense...

should we contact the embassy at some point? or should we wait until she gets her passport first to see what it says? So confusing, and kinda scary.

Please help us if anyone knows. We just got our NOA2 a few days ago! helpsmilie.gif

In the Philippines, the Official Middle Name for single women and men are their mothers maiden name, that would appear on every documents issued in the Philippines including Passports. I don't think you will have any problem because when she fill out the Form G325a she put her mothers maiden name in there and i guess the Embassy will understand that. But if you want to be sure call the embassy immediately, you don't have to wait for the passport because im sure they will use her mother's maiden name as her middle name.

PhilippinesMiddle name to be used when filling up adjustment of status form
QUOTE (jom @ Dec 3 2007, 11:52 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi to all those who have done Adjustment of Status.

By Philippine culture we use our mother's maiden name as our middle name and its the middle name I used in filling up forms for the K1 application and in my passport and all other documents upon entering the USA (SSN application, I-94, Marriage Certificate) . Now that I am married I definitely changed my previous surname to my husband's family name and by Philippine custom my previous surname is now my middle name but the system here is different because US citizens can choose their middle names and not necessarily their mother's maiden name.

My questions:

When applying for the AOS what middle name should I use? Should I follow the Phillipine system to the effect that my middle name now is my previous surname or should I retain the middle name I used in my SSN, I-94 and Marriage Certificate?

Thanks for the help.

Myla

As for me i chose to retain my mother's maiden name as my middle name and use my husband's family name as my new family name. Others follow the Filipino culture and others didn't change their name at all. You can choose whatever you want, remember that whatever name you used in your AOS application thats the name that will appear in your Green Card, so choose wisely.

Philippinespacket 3 and packet 4?
QUOTE (pechez @ Dec 3 2007, 07:31 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
after the approval, it will then be forwarded to nvc? and then what's next? to embassy and then what? CAn anyone tell me the step by step process? Forgive my ignorance. Is it ok to get a passport and police clearance before having the packet 3? and when will the affidavit of support needed? What is the packet 3 and packet 4?

After your approval and your documents are forwarded to Manila the benificiary and petitioner will receive :

1.) a Letter of Receipt and Instruction Sheet on what documents to prepare (They said this not a packet 3 because theres no packet 3 in the Philippines and some people didn't get this)

2.) Your Appointment letter (for interview and medical) and Packet 4 ( you can download a sample packet here:http://manila.usembassy.gov/wwwh3023.html

After you receive (1.) using the given case number you can check your interview schedule online at USCIS site:http://203.177.135.10/ivappointment/login.asp

The affidavit of support are needed on the interview

And yes you can get your passport anytime and also the NBI clearance

ok is this what is happening. i just got done reading the link to embassy info for the philippines and it says it takes 93 days from when consulate recieves papers from nvc to get an interview this was as of nov.7. i am just wondering if this is whats happening or if it isnt taking that long. i have been betting on about a month and just trying to figuring when me and my wife will be together and if 90 days is what happening then that stinks i will have missed her b-day and our first wedding aniv. it is totaly bogus to have to miss the holidays with out missing more.

Thats possible, in my case it took more than 93 days. The Consulate received my papers August 25 and my interview was January 11. I received the Appointment letter and packet 4 around November. That was last year though, i hope they are faster this time, just pray that yours will not take that long. Good luck!

PhilippinesSurvey Says?
I will share you my experience when i first moved to Davao from Koronadal. I moved to a boarding house and on my first day there one Girl (Bisayan) talked to me a befriend me, after a few hours of conversation she asked me to go with her to the mall (we talked in Bisaya), unknowingly i answered her in Hiligaynon, i said "Karon ah" which means "later" in Hiligaynon. So she stand up and said "OK" and went to her room. After a few minutes she came back dressed up, she asked me why i wasn't dressed, i told her i thought i said we will go later. She said no, you said now, you said "Karon na", then I realized that i answered her in Hiligaynon. I explained to her what i said and what it means to Hiligaynon and we laughed. From then on we become best friends and we avoid using "karon" on our conversation.

Karon - means now in "Bisaya" and later in "Hiligaynon"

I was born in Iloilo (Western Visayas) so i speak " Kinaray-a" and "Hiligaynon". When i was 16 we moved to Koronadal (Mindanao) and this City is composed of diffirent kind of people from other provinces of the Philippines, they speak different dialects too, so from there i learned to speak "Ilokano", "Kapampangan" and "Bisaya". I speak Tagalog too which is the our National Language and English.

PhilippinesCFO QUESTION
QUOTE (Vann @ Dec 1 2007, 10:15 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hello, all! I plan on flying my fiance in this January 18. She has her K1 visa but still needs to attend her CFO. I went to the website and saw this:

<< 1. Original valid passport;
2. Original and photocopy of visa;
3. One (1) 2x2 or passport-size photograph;
4. One (1) valid identification card with photograph;
5. Original and photocopy of Confirmation of Permanent Residence (for CANADA-bound emigrant);
6. Original and photocopy of Immigrant Data Summary (for USA bound emigrant);
7. Original and photocopy of the Embassy Certification of Eligibility (for Spain bound C visa holders);
8. Original and photocopy of letter of approval for Work to Residence visa (for New Zealand bound emigrants);
9. Photocopy of employment contract(for immigrant workers);
10. Duly completed registration form (downloadable at www.cfo.gov.ph);
11. Payment of P400.00 registration fee ; and
12. Attendance in the PDOS or peer counseling session;>>

My questions:

Photocopy of visa? From what she told me, she received her visa in an unopened envelope that was supposed to stay unopened until her port of entry in the US in which US officials would then open it so how can she have a photocopy of her visa? I'm confused.

Also, does she get her CFO approval stamp/sticker right at the CFO? She was planning on going this week.

Please answer these questions. Thank you!

I'm planning marriage to her this January 28th, our two year anniversary!

Her Visa is attached to her passport and it can be photocopied. The sealed brown envelope is the Visa packet, it can't be opened.

She will take the counseling at either PRISM or SMEF-COW and get the sticker at CFO office. Please note that SMEF-COW at Quezon City has CFO extension Office at their compound, if you go there you don't have to go to CFO main office to get the sticker.

No, eventhough she will be finished early at the first day, she needs to go back for the result the next day. Vaccinations are included on the Medical Exam Fee (about PHP 6,235), so better let her get the vaccinations at St. Lukes. Vaccinations on private clinics will cost you about PHP 12,000.

Im thinking that its Not the Medical issue that got her deported, maybe she brought something that is prohibited or did something wrong. Or maybe she opened the sealed brown envelope. If your medical exam failed, the USEM will not issue you a Visa. As long as you have your Visa , you'll be fine and don't bring anything that is prohibited.

QUOTE (Michael and Milahjean @ Dec 7 2007, 04:15 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Thought we'd give a short update on our continuing amazing journey. It's been quite a while since our last post. We've been unbelievably busy. Milah Jean is absolutely loving her new life in the heart of the Midwest.

She's been here now 8 months, having experienced the coming of Spring, the unbearable heat and humidity of summer (she actually says it's hotter here than Leyte...???), and now her first major snowfall just a couple of days ago. She's already built a cute snowman on our deck!!! She still wears her jacket inside the house, even though it's a whole lot warmer than outside (yesterday am was 7 degrees!!!).

She's adjusting amazingly well, has made many, many new local filipina friends, is very active in church teaching action Bible songs to 1st thru 5th grade kids, hasn't quite learned to drive yet, has access to much of her favorite native foods at local markets, laughs every night at Wowowee on TFC from DirecTV, was blown away by the sunset from the top of Sears Tower in Chicago on a beautiful clear day, traveled by car to Atlanta to meet my grown kids and saw "mountains" for the first time (it's kinda flat here in western Ohio), been introduced to all of my relatives in Illinois, tried turkey and pumpkin pie, will soon be experiencing Christmas away from home for the first time ever and will be absolutely amazed next month at Disneyworld in Florida, I'm sure. Every day is an amazing gift for her...and me.

There's just so much that she has experienced that boggles my mind. I see everything new again when I imagine what she must be thinking...it overwhelms me often...watching her lovingly decorate the fireplace wreath with lights and ornaments last week, the list is endless...I shake my head in amazement and wonder every day....she is an absolute joy.

And, there's even bigger news...she's with child now...due July 7...so her world has been upended with a recent round of nausea, but she'll be fine shortly. She's so grateful and thankful for this miracle gift...we've seen the ultrasound already and everything is doing great.

To all who have followed in our footsteps, best wishes and happiness to you. My life is changed...her life is a living dream....

God bless all, enjoy the blessed Christmas season and remember to give thanks for our miracles.

Michael and Milah Jean

Im happy for both of you and congratulations for the little one. I can see that you will have a Merry Christmas !

There are lot of people who got hit everytime in NBI because of the same names, but i don't think the NSO will be wrong because you supplied the birth date and parents name, theres no two children born to the same parents with the same name at the same time. I guess you have to deal with this at NSO personally. Its possible that your fiancee is a victim of identity theft, someone stole her birth certificate and use it for marriage.

PhilippinesShipped jewelry Tarriff or Duty.. ridiculous rate ?
QUOTE (hoosier @ Dec 21 2007, 01:53 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I sent my Fiancee her christmas present via UPS a few days ago.
Basically a Card, some candy and a 14k Gold necklace. The necklace is
18 grams 14k gold mall Store retail maybe worth $800 I paid less than
half of that. When I shipped the necklace , just to be safe I decided
to insure the package for $500.

I get a message from my Fiancee at 3:30AM this morning telling me she
just got a call from a man saying he's with UPS Cebu and that when
they come to deliver the package they will need her to pay PP6100
($150US) for a tariff or duty. the man on the phone gave her a cell
phone number to call to let him know if they can deliver it tommorow.

Well I called the number he did not answer his phone, I began to
suspect maybe this was just a shakedown from the driver. I finally
did get a hold of UPS operator in PI and it comes to find out it is
legit.

My gripe is I asked when I sent the item from my local UPS office if
there would be a duty for this item and the said not for that low of
value for personal use.

Has anyone else here had this similar experience, is this even real?

Anyone maybe have a link to customs and duties webpage describing
said rules and fees for PI?

Does anyone else find this rate ,Basically 30% tariff rate ridiculous
especially just for personal use?

I guess I'm just going to have her pay it, as it seems we have no
choice really unless someone here has another suggestion.

You have to veify that, it sounds fishy to me. As far as i knew Couriers like UPS and Fedex didn't charged anything to the recepient. I used to receive packages from then Fiance through FedEx when i was in the Philippines and i havn't paid a single cent. Let your fiancee go to the nearest UPS branch and claim it personally, its possible that its just a delivery guys scam, if its real why he gave his cellphone number, why not the UPS official number.

I arrived here last February and this will be my first christmas in the US and i'm veru excited. We don't have snow here in Las Vegas so it feels like im in the Philippines except for my family are not around. We have a 7 ft. Christmas tree its not real but its very pretty. Since we don't have snow in here, i've made lots of snow flakes and stick it anywhere around the house, we don't have stockings on our freplace because as my husband said its just for kids and we don't have one. I'm very excited because i'll be spending Christmas with my husband for the first time. We will be having Ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, vegetables, cheesecake and eggnog for christmas eve. And the most exciting part is the opening of the gift, i can't wait to see what's his christmas gift for me. Normally i can't resist to open immediately the gifts that i've received lol,but this time i tried to control my self and let the gifts under the christmas tree unopened until the christmas eve. I sent all the financial support documents through USPS Priority Mail 2nd week of December. He still has not received it yet and I am worried that it is lost. He went to the Post office yesterday and they told him that they have not received anything yet and to wait for them to deliver him the slip which is a notice that he has a package before returning to the post office. I am just worried because all the original documents to show financial support is in that envelop.

Do you guys think because of the holidays, there's mail delay? International priority mail is usually 7 to 14 days.

I had sent priority mail before and it took 3 weeks or more. My suggestion on the next person reading this, if you need to send important paper works such as financial support documents or etc, send it through UPS, DHL or Fedex, that way, you have peace of mind. I am not trying to scare you, but I don't trust postal service when it comes in the Philippines because I had lost many mails through postal. I hope you are aware about stealing items or lost in postal service in the Philippines especially if it came from other country. I would not take a risk for that. I don't think USPS priority mail is insured. Express mail is insured for $100.00. I would rather pay in UPS $50.00 for paper works send in PI rather than stress about it... I hate to say against the system in PI, but it is true!

I agree, i have sent a copy of our wedding photos to my parents last september and they never receive it, not to mention the mails that my husband sent that i haven't received when i was there. Its very disappointing but its true, Philippine postal services sucks!

PhilippinesYour Favorite Mode of Transportation in The Philippines
I don't have a favorite, it depends on how much time i got. If im on a hurry i took a Cab or MRT (train) if im travelling through EDSA , if i got lot of time i took a jeepney or tricycle or whichever is available.
