United KingdomCEAC Creation date changed to today's date? What does this mean?

It looks like good news at last.  The case creation date changed when my visa was issued and I'm sure that has happened to a couple of people here recently too.

Anna GrantFemaleUnited Kingdom2013-09-05 06:23:00
United KingdomWhat constitutes a CEAC status update change or general status change

Mine says "Ready" but speaking to the DoS yesterday they say that my Packet 3 hasn't been received.

I sent my packet 3 five weeks ago, had my medical two weeks ago and have been sitting here waiting patiently for them to send me an interview date. Today I'm rushing them another set of packet 3 documents to be delivered Monday morning.

The lady we spoke to at the DoS says not to pay any attention to what the CEAC website says as it's new and still flaky/unreliable.

Makes me wonder how I would have ever known that they were waiting for me while I was waiting for them! I'm starting to panic that I won't be in America for Christmas.

You won't be allocated an interview date until the embassy have received the results of your medical.   So that would only have been about 10 days ago!

United Kingdomhow long should i expect to wait for interview date?

I know things look bad with the delays at London at the moment but just be glad that your didn't submit your petition last summer.  We had to wait 268 days for our NOA2!  It took 11 months from NOA1 to POE.

We certainly got fed up earlier this year when nothing was coming out of CSC at all.

United Kingdomhow long should i expect to wait for interview date?

good point AG - I'm going to talk to my fiance and the lawyer about it...I think we're okay on the bank account because he is keeping his HSBC acct there and I think they said he can set one up here without it...but sounds like this is much easier to get the SSN number done before we get married. smile.png

There are lots of other reasons why it's useful to get an SSN - not just for bank accounts.  Officially, an SSN is only supposed to be used so that the government can get taxes off you.  However, lots of organizations use it to uniquely identify you.  I will need it next week to register for a training course that will lead me to taking a state exam.  Theoretically, they don't need the SSN but it makes life a darn sight easier having it.  To be added to a spouse's health insurance, it makes it easier.  To get your own health insurance, it makes it easier.  Life is easier if you get your SSN before you're married.  Life for the non-US person is enough of a challenge without adding an unnecessary challenge (you can guess I'm chomping at the bit to get to work - there are only so many classes I can take in preparation for working in the US!)

Another day, no mail came. So I called DoS and they told me packet 4 was sent out today and interview is September 24th at 9am goofy.gif dancin5hr.gif

YAY! So relieved!

Excellent news - congratulations!

United Kingdomhow long should i expect to wait for interview date?

oh ####### - sorry you went through all that. see this lawyer frustrates me a bit.

Would it matter any that my fiance is the man and won't need to change his name or is the main issue some offices not recognizing that he's still here on a K1 after we marry?

It may matter less as there is no name change involved.  However, the main sticking point for me at the first SSA office was the question 'And have you subsequently married?'  That starting them off on the whole 'You are no longer a fiancee, so you can no longer use your K1 visa to get an SSN.'  They were wrong and I tried to persuade them for some time but they were adamant.  I'm no push over but I had to admit defeat and tried another SSA office who were far better trained and knew exactly what to do.  You could get an SSA office where they know what they're doing; you might not.

Anna GrantFemaleUnited Kingdom2013-08-23 08:49:00
United Kingdomhow long should i expect to wait for interview date?

The most fool proof way to get a SSN is before the wedding and in the maiden name. Social security offices are so dumb about K1s sometimes and tell you K1 isn't eligible or you got married so now are a K3 which isn't eligible. That's all just wrong. They need to find your name in the S.A.V.E. database exactly as you entered at POE. So if you show up saying you are married and want to apply in a married name, they can get all messed up and say that name isn't in USCIS records. Your first K1 card will have written on it --valid for work only with DHS authorization. You will want that removed so go back after EAD or the greencard to show your new status and change the name at the same time. Some people hit the jackpot and get the name change with their first card, but I am telling you the easiest way to actually get a card with the least chance of screw up by an uninformed worker who may have never run across a K1 before. Walk in and say I am a K1 visa holder applying for a social security card. Here is my passport and I-94.

If you go past your 76th day in the US, your window closes until you get EAD or a greencard.

I concur with Nich-Nick - apply for your SSN 10 days after you arrive in the US and before you get married.  See what happened to me here as proof - http://www.visajourn...ied-on-k1-visa/

United KingdomCan I attend the interview?

Yes, the USC can attend the interview.  My then fiance did in June.  We had to inform the Embassy and they e-mailed back to say it was okay and his name would be 'on the door'.  Remember that they need to take their US passport for ID and take a copy of the e-mail that you receive from the Embassy as confirmation.

The USC can accompany you to both the first window, where you hand over paperwork, and the second window, where the actual interview takes place.

If you're coming down from Staff, I would probably suggest driving down to Stanmore, Middlesex and coming in to Bond St directly from there on the Jubilee Line.

EDIT - I've just looked at your timeline in your signature.  You have been ping ponging across the Atlantic, haven't you?

United KingdomTaking Old Passports to K1 Interviews ?

I don't remember all passports being on the checklist. I looked and don't see it. Where did I miss it?

OK - it's here under 'Have you traveled outside the United States since becoming a permanent resident?' http://www.uscis.gov...rces/G-1151.pdf

It says 'Even if you have not traveled outside the United States since becoming a permanent resident, you should bring all of your valid and expired passports and any travel documents issued by USCIS to your naturalization interview. If you do not bring your passport(s) and other documents to your interview, your case could be delayed.'

Thinking of the future, if you're going for naturalization, don't you need all passports - current and expired - at that stage?

United KingdomSomething new to obsess about

When I did my interview in June, I head the ruler out and measured my photos.  The outer dimensions were fine but the inter dimensions as to where your face is supposed to fit within the photo were slightly out.  there was no problem at the interview.  They don't get a ruler out.  I thin they just look at the photo and think 'that's fine' as long as your head doesn't fill the entire photo!  My husband always says I look so solemn in passport, etc photos.  Not the way he's used to seeing me.  I say that the UK regs say 'don't smile'!

United KingdomUS Government Shutdown - affect on visa interviews and visa issuance?

As I posted in another thread:

Another impact of the shutdown is, once you get to the US, you will not be able to get a Social Security Number - http://www.socialsec...y.gov/shutdown/

I was due to go this week to change my SSN card from my maiden to married name (now that I have my EAD) but will not now be able to do it until the shutdown finishes.

The official line for US Embassies around the world is:

If you need a visa

Because consular services at U.S. embassies and consulates around the world are largely funded by application fees, not annual appropriations, visa applications filed by foreigners wanting to enter the United States will continue to be processed, according to the State Department.

the post above referring to 'processing visa and passport applications' is the ones done in the US for US citizens.  Not the ones done outside of the US for non-US citizens.

United KingdomSelf-Sponsoring Success

As some of you might remember, my fiance and I had opted to forego the I-134 in favor of him self-sponsoring (an option available at London). While it was an option, there was very little concrete info on how to do it. We basically had to guess at what they'd want to see, and he spent a lot of time in banks getting paperwork from them. For the benefit of anyone else considering this route, I thought I'd write up this post.

First, know that this is not the standard route at London. When my fiance got to the interview, the man asked for his I-134 and he replied "I would like to self-sponsor". This threw the man behind the counter off and he openly said that they don't get that often so, to my fiance, "all right, what do you have for me?".

Here is what my fiance had:

- A topsheet with a summary of the four main assets he was demonstrating, with an explanation at the bottom of how he was planning to convert said value into dollars (note: it is actually illegal in some states to transfer money from overseas into domestic bank accounts, and we acknowledged in that letter that California was not one of them)

- A signed and stamped letter from his savings bank with the balance in it

- A signed and stamped letter from his day-to-day checking/savings bank with the balance in it

- A signed and stamped letter with the value of his portfolio (dated within two weeks of the interview) and a brief summary of stocks/bonds that made it up

- A signed letter of valuation for his flat, along with the deed to prove ownership.

Here is what the interviewer was interested in:

- The top spreadsheet, after looking at which he said "all right, show me the savings account"

- The savings account letter, after looking at which he said "yeah, that'll be enough".

My fiance asked if he wanted to see info on the other accounts, or the deed/valuation to his flat, and the officer just flipped through the paperwork in about 2 seconds and said "yeah, it's fine".

So. That was it. Despite the officer only really being interested in the first two things, I would still recommend that anyone going this route bring as much info as they can - just in case.

If anyone has any questions, please ask away! I hope this helped someone on their journey.

Without wishing to be rude or personal, could you tell us the amount that he had in his savings account?  It would be really useful for people coming after you to have some idea of how much is 'enough'.

Congratulations on his approval and having the confidence to 'self sponsor'.  I'm sure it was a nervous time for you.

United KingdomList of Docs sent TO beneficiary to take to interview

It looks like some folks are getting interviews super fast and others are not. I was amazed when looking at other sections of VJ to see K1 folks getting their NOA2s in 2 months. I definitely feel like we applied at the worst time with all of the hassles of Vermont/Texas, change of forms, delay sending to NVC, etc.

Yes but just be glad you weren't applying last summer.  It took us 9 months to get our NOA2 (NOA1 date of 24 July 2012).  It's quite galling to see people getting their NOA2s in 2 months.

United KingdomPassport condition

I had a different passport to the one that I had when I submitted the I-129F.  I had no problem.  I took my old passport with me to the interview, in case they wanted to see it as it had about 3 of my VWP stamps for entry to the US in it.  But they only wanted to see my current passport.  If you can get to London, then that is a lot quicker but you have to pick up your passport at the end of the day.

See here for the different ways of getting your UK passport:

https://www.gov.uk/b...broad/passports

Personally, I would probably go to the Post Office and do their 'Check and Send' service.  It tends to be quicker (although a little more expensive than mailing it direct) - https://www.gov.uk/h...d-service-works.  Not all Post Offices offer this service - check whether http://www.postoffic...k/branch-finder and select 'Passport Check and Send'.

United KingdomPending I-130 | Preparing UK Husband for US visit

Check out this long running thread about visiting the US whilst going through the immigration process (it is under the K1 area but is still relevant to I-130):

http://www.visajourn...-you-can-visit/

And here is a checklist of things to show their ties to the UK:

http://www.visajourn...content/k1visit

Most trips to the US go without a hitch but it is best to be prepared - people have been denied entry to the US because they could not demonstrate that they had to go back to the UK (i.e. it looked like they had immediate immigrant intent).

Yeah there were people in tracksuit when i was there.

Although they were probably getting visitor's visas.

I wore dark jeans, a casual top and sneakers. My then fiance wore jeans (the only time I have seen him wear anything but jeans was on our wedding day!), a t-shirt and casual shows.

United KingdomHow have your family and friends reacted to your plans ?

Anna, she could be missing you and not know how to express it. Sure, there is envy mixed in with her feelings. If you want to keep in touch with her, don't give up.

Before I left, she told me how much she was going to miss me.  I told her that I would miss her too.  Obviously, as my best friend, she was the first person who knew about my soon to be fiance.  She was happy initially but then started to say 'How much do you know about this man?'  I was know she was anxious for me and wanted to protect me.  I told her than the process takes some time anyway (in my case, 11 months from NOA1 until entering the US on the K1 visa).  What also annoyed me at the time of telling her was I told her that she could not tell anyone about my plans.  She told at least two other people.  I also think what has happened to me is making her reflect on her own life.  She has a record of dating users.  The last one led her to have to get an IVA!  So now she has no money and the bloke has scarpered.

I will keep trying.  I ask her for her news in my emails to her as well as giving her my news but I get nothing back.  But I will keep trying.

I can't believe that Nick-Nich has gone.  I've seen the post which probably caused the administrative action and I've seen far worse that resulted in no action taken.  And the post was open to interpretation also.

You would think that the Mods might consider all the help that Nich-Nick has given to other members and the time she has taken - often individually as she did with me.  The Mod action seems out of proportion.

Since arriving in the US last June, I have posted less but that is partly because the London process has changed so much since I went through it and my guidance is out of date.  I do post in some other areas and do read a fair amount.

United KingdomLondon Interview - List of Typical Interview Questions

I was asked none of those questions, not normal to be quizzed so in London.

They normally ask you around 3 or 4 questions - not the entire list!  The most common out of the list I've seen are 1)  How did you meet?  and 2) When did you start talking about marriage?

And I agree with Nich-Nick - it is done as a conversation.  Not questions just fired at you but a question that starts a conversation.

United KingdomLondon Interview - List of Typical Interview Questions

Sorry - I made a typo in my post - it should have been:

The interviewer does not know the answers to most of the questions they ask - they are looking to see how you respond and your body language rather than the detail of the answer.

Anna GrantFemaleUnited Kingdom2013-09-09 11:22:00
United KingdomLondon Interview - List of Typical Interview Questions

Having been through the interview process about 3 months ago, I found checking the interview reviews useful.  The most interesting was checking the types of questions they ask.  Therefore, I have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions at interview.  I hope you find this useful.

Remember, the interviewer wants you to succeed.  There are no questions designed to trip you up or catch you out.  They are just questions that most couples in a genuine relationship will know the answers to (although I did have to ask my fiance to remind me of where he went to college - we had even driven past it and he'd pointed it out but I still forgot).  The interviewer does know the answers to most of the questions they ask - they are looking to see how you respond and your body language rather than the detail of the answer.

So - here is the list - please feel free to add to it to help other people who are after you in this process:

  • Where did you meet?
  • How did you meet?
  • How did your relationship progress?
  • And what attracted you to them?
  • When did things get serious?
  • When did you start talking about marriage?
  • How did the proposal happen?
  • How many times have you visited?
  • How many times have they visited?
  • Where were they born?
  • Where do they live now?
  • What did they study in college?
  • Which college?
  • Which subject?
  • What grade did they get?
  • Where do they work? What is their position?
  • Do their parents still live there?
  • Have you met their parents? What do they do for a living?
  • Do they have siblings?  If so, what are their names and ages?  Where is your fiancé/ee in the line-up?  What do they do for a living?
  • Do you get on with their family?
  • Has your fiancé/ee been married before?  If so, why did the marriage end?
  • When do you intend to fly to the US?
  • Why are you moving to the US rather than them moving to the UK?
  • What are your plans for the wedding?
  • What kind of work do you hope to get in the US?

Ill prob drive to cockfosters and get on underground as im 40 mins from there.

Thanks

I would say, given where you live, it may be better to drive to Stanmore as that is on the Jubilee Line and will take you straight through to Bond Street.  I then walked from there.

Good luck for tomorrow!  You'll be fine.  I took some relationship evidence but was not asked for any of it - although I did volunteer some of it to back up the tale of how he proposed.  I think most people take it as a security blanket.

It was 3 months on the 22nd since we saw each other, also the longest we've gone!

I'm hoping to fly out early September, I still need to sell my car and I figure that might take a week or two. I can't wait for the airport reunion hug happy.png

That hug is so sweet.  It was so brilliant going into his arms, knowing that I wouldn't have to leave again.  Knowing I was there for us to get finally married.  We have considered passing by the airport on my 90th day here and sticking out tongues out at the airport!  However, we are a bit too busy for that!

United KingdomRecent interviewees - do you have your passport yet??

thanks chloe, managed to find that number after circling websites for a while lol, they sure don't make it easy for us even though we paying thousands for this stuff!! (me and 3 kids so 4 times the amount most paying)
All they told us is to keep checking ceac sad.png This is so frustrating, after being so excited to be approved now its pure fear something is wrong! trying to keep a level head as I know everything is in the air with systems changing and its not been the 10 days they quote but when you see people that interviewed after you already having their visa/passport back in the post it makes you wonder whats wrong with your own case!

Did you specifically say 'I noticed that my case was updated yesterday.  Can you tell me what happened to cause that update?'

I found that you had to be quite specific with your question to get the information.  Also, you may have to call more than once.  Some people on that number are more helpful than others.

They can put you into AP, additional processing for security checks which can take 4-8 weeks or many months. Here's one who interviewed in London Aug 6, 2012 and still doesn't have a visa. http://www.visajourn...london-embassy/

However, that is quite exceptional.  Generally speaking, once you get 'approved' at the interview, you do get your visa(s) within about 10 days.  It is in certain circumstances that someone may get placed in AP.

BTW - once you are approved, your status on CEAC may change to 'Administrative Processing'.  Please don't panic about this.  This is a 'catch all' phrase to cover anything to do with processing and happened to me 3 months ago in the same situation.  Your status should change to 'issued' a couple of days later.  If it doesn't change, then call DOS.

I might have to go and eat a packet here in the UK just to get my fill before I leave. I don't think I've eaten pickled onion monster munch since school... In a similar vein, I binged my way through an entire packet of crumpets the other day.

My accent is RP, pretty much like the Downton Abbey lot.  I get comments on it at least once a day.  Last night, we stopped into a Sonic to get one of their ice-cream milkshakes and I ordered via the tannoy system at the entrance.  The person taking my order said over the tannoy 'Just to start, I love your accent!'  Everyone around laughed.

I don't find it an issue face to face.  And I also look at it as an ice-breaker.  I sometimes have trouble being understood over the phone.  We live in Kansas at the moment and will be moving to Texas soon.

United KingdomThings you need to do before leaving the UK

Something else to think of is the kind if job you are going to be looking for in the US.  I think it's less of an issue if you have a degree but if you don't, you need evidence of your level of education.  A lot of jobs in the US ask for 'high school diploma'.  Obliviously, we don't have that in the UK.  We have qualifications in specific subjects such and English and Maths (which will become Math once you get over here!).  Therefore, you need to get something called a transcript which demonstrates your level.

There are a number of organizations in the US that provide this service for a price.  Some will require you to do all the legwork i.e. contact your qualification providers to mail evidence to the company and some will do the legwork for you or accept copies of your certificates.

The one that was recommended to me by a college here is IERF.  I would need to have them certify my qualifications to be able to start a college course as I would need a high school diploma.  Here is their website - http://ierf.org/ and here is the page for the UK http://ierf.org/inde...#United_Kingdom

A general report costs $85 - use the Interactive tool here to check - http://ierf.org/inde...ing-applicants/

Luckily, I have found a job that doesn't require me to demonstrate my qualifications, so I haven't had to follow up on it.  However, it may be in my interest to do it anyway.

I was in hospital 3 months ago with a chest infection and fluid on right lung and my blood pressure was perfectly normal. It always has been thankfully, always slightly low if anything but that's normal for me.

Your blood pressure should be fine then.  They may lecture you a bit once they work out your BMI.  I was told 'You know your BMI is 31'.  I said 'yes, I do'.

If you've recently had a chest infection that required hospitalisation, I assume you have all that information to take with you to the medical?  You will have a chest x-ray.

I didn't think it would. I'm 17 stone and losing weight at the moment. Just wanted to be certain. Never had high blood pressure or anything medical.

What was your blood pressure the last time it was measured?  Are you able to monitor it at home?

I was overweight with white-coat hyper-tension last summer when I had my medical in London.  The first reading was above the allowed level - I think the level is 150/95 or so.  I asked the doctor if I could be allowed to sit quietly in an office and have it taken again in 30 minutes.  By that stage, I had calmed down and my blood pressure was 148/94 and I passed.
