Another question:

My fiancees U.S. ESTA visa is currently expired (as of 2 months ago). Is it alright to renew it through the ESTA site or will this raise red flags since she's in process for the K1 visa? Thanks much again.

I renewed my ESTA as I had a new passport.  It was about 3 months after we had submitted our K1 petition.  I had no problems.

Another impact of the shutdown is, once you get to the US, you will not be able to get a Social Security Number - http://www.socialsec...y.gov/shutdown/

I was due to go this week to change my SSN card from my maiden to married name (now that I have my EAD) but will not now be able to do it until the shutdown finishes.

The official line for US Embassies around the world is:

If you need a visa

Because consular services at U.S. embassies and consulates around the world are largely funded by application fees, not annual appropriations, visa applications filed by foreigners wanting to enter the United States will continue to be processed, according to the State Department.

USPS UPS OR FEDEX DHL which one has the best tracking and safest method for mailing documents or anything???
Which one has the best guaranteed date of delivery?

Personally I would use UPS. I used them to mail my packet 3 forms from the US.

USPS mislaid my EAD for 5 days even though USCIS mailed it by Priority Mail. Although, to give them credit, they did manage to find it when I called them and sent it on.

I have no experience of FedEx.

I rather send them fast it's okay about the cost I was expecting an amount like that anyway; but I was talking about the link to pay the visa fee online not the usps link jeje smile.pngwink.png I was asking if you had any idea on that.

Thank you smile.png and God Bless

Ah!  Sorry!  I'm already in the US, so paid my visa fee about 4 months ago using the old system, so I'm afraid I can't help you with that.

Yes thank you but we just realized this :/ The form he needed just extra stuff but still Okay I will look into both thank you! This sentence doesn't click to me and you rephrase it please?

You can check the guaranteed delivery date and then remind the USPS staff that if they out in the from zip code and to post code, it will come up with a date.  I mailed by 5:30 on a Friday and it got there on Tuesday.

The only link I put in my post was this one:

http://ircalc.usps.com/?country=10150

If that's not working for you, then try this one:

http://postcalc.usps.com/

And select UK.

Actually,  If this was me, I would post the document (assuming it's not expensive and you have more than one copy) by normal mail to the UK first as your interview isn't until 18 October.  That usually takes 5 to 7 days for me.  If it's not arrived within a week, I would then mail a further copy by an expedited method.  That could save you some money.  It really depends on the document you need to send.

He got the appt letter OCT 18th! smile.png Please pray for us and all goes well. I still have to send him one more document I should express this but when we express this to london like overnight what time frame are we looking at getting there anyone knows. Like 3 days ? Now I know he has to pay for the Visa now...? Before the interview I need to look for the link I know some people were having trouble paying this online. :/

I can't help but point out that when he sent in the DS-2001 form, that was suppose to indicate that he had ALL the documentation he needed for the interview!

However, I have mailed stuff to the UK two ways.

USPS

Priority Mail Express International - 3 to 5 days.  They may say that it is not guaranteed but if you go through here:

http://ircalc.usps.com/?country=10150

You can check the guaranteed delivery date and then remind the USPS staff that if they out in the from zip code and to post code, it will come up with a date.  I mailed by 5:30 on a Friday and it got there on Tuesday.

Costs $44.95 if you use one of their envelopes.

UPS

Around $65.  Mailed at 3:30pm on a Thursday.  Got there at 9am on the Monday.

United KingdomLondon 2012- K1s from NOA2 to interview thread

Hi all,

My interview is very soon and I've got all my docs ready!

It would be great if you could all double check my list and make sure I have everything needed!

I have:

1. Receipt of visa payment (email print out)

2. Birth cert + copy

3. Notarized Affidavit (taken under Oath by my Mum) as my birth certificate doesn't have mine or my Mums name in full

4. British citizenship certificate + copy

5. Police Cert + copy

6. I-134 + Proof of income (tax transcripts/employer letter/pay slips)

7. My passport + 2 US sized photos

8. Interview letter

I think this should be everything...shall I take my parents British citizenship certificates too? In case they ask? Or should I include anything else?

I'm not taking proof of relationship as most have said its not necessary.

Thanks in advance!

I take it that you have not been married before?  If you have, you need to take your decree absolute with you.

You are correct in that London are not interested in evidence of an ongoing relationship.  However, some of us take some stuff along with us just for comfort.  I found it useful with the interviewing officer asked me 'How did he propose?'.  I whipped out my scrapbook and showed her!  I could have just as easily told her but enjoyed telling her the story and showing her the photos of us in our t-shirts (he had t-shirts printed with 'Anna.  I love you.  Will you marry me?'  and 'Mr Anna.  I love you too.  Of course I will.'

Sorry.  Went offtopic45vn.gif there!

The interview questions are ones that any half of a couple in a genuine relationship can answer.

Good luck for tomorrow!

Cheers for that. It's down the road on the right as you approach the embassy.

Visa has been approved! Interview was really easy just lots of sitting around and waiting :-) I got the icl at first who was really nice although mumbles quite a bit so i could only just make it what she was saying lol

Congratulations!  It all seems a bit of an anti-climax, doesn't it?  It took us 11 months from NOA1 to interview and you're pushing and pushing to get there and then....... 'Oh.  Is that all you wanted to ask me?  Don't you want to see all my work?  I've really prepared for this, you know!'

Hey guys, quick q as I have my interview in the morning - are you allowed debit cards in the Embassy? We are leaving all electronics in the hotel room, but we are gonna need my card to pay for tube tickets. It has a chip in it, so is this allowed? Also my fiancé wants to clarify if he stands in my line with me if he is attending it too?

Debit cards are fine. I had them in my purse together with my Oyster card. My US fiance just queued up with me. They checked he was on the list and his US passport.

Good luck for tomorrow QoB. I will be thinking of you.

Getting taken to another room (secondary) is not a bad sign. It's the common procedure at many airports. So don't freak out if you go to the regular guy working the lines and he calls an officer to escort you to a private processing area. That is very normal.

Oh, yes it's very normal.  From the reports I've read here, it might be more normal to be taken to secondary than not.

Anna GrantFemaleUnited Kingdom2013-08-23 18:30:00

Nich, does the content of that envelope go to the immigration officer at my POE? What do they do with it?

Just to add to what Nich-Nick said, what actually physically happens at POE is that you hand over your large, sealed envelope and passport with the K1 visa pasted onto one of the pages over to the CBP officer.  If the CBP officer is experienced with the K1 visa process, they will deal with it themselves.  They slit open the envelope carefully with a penknife and look briefly at the contents.  They then look at your visa and key lots of stuff into their system from the visa to show that you have entered (and it means you can retrieve your I-94 later for getting your SSN and for AOS - ask the CBP officer about I-94 and they will give you a little leaflet which gives you the website for retrieval - I think it's www.cbp.gov/I94).  They then stamp your visa showing 'Admitted' and the date.  My CBP officer wrote what appears to be CWOP across my visa.  Google suggests this might mean 'Cancelled With Out Prejudice'.

If the CBP officer is not as experienced, then you will go to secondary screening and someone will do it all for you there.  I was the last person through passport control, so I thunk that's also why he did mine there and then - I wasn't holding anyone else up.

I'm not sure I've called before with a phone card. But I thought maybe the way I was dialing was wrong; they've answered before but kill my minutes. Like a 10$ phone care only last 20 with them lol

For the 0870 number, check here for localized numbers which shouldn't kill your minutes:

Thank you I'm in the US and I always dial 01144+the number to call my Fiance but this doesn't seem to work with these 800 numbers :/ unless they are busy or not taking calls at their call center...

0800 and 0845 numbers cannot generally be called from outside of the UK.  0800 are 'free calls' and 0845 are 'local calls', so they can't be connected to from abroad.  You need to find the alternative general phone number.

The interview really is so easy. Will write up a review when I get home.

Fantastic news!  Congratulations.  It ends up being a bit of an anti-climax, doesn't it?

Off topic: Want to know the two phrases I hate most??
"This is so stressful."
"Better safe than sorry."

Hahaha I don't know why but those are like fingernails on a chalkboard. I'm weird.

In this forum it is:

'We can't possibly be apart'

Oh yes you can - we all have to go through this.

And recently:

'I am visiting my fiance on the VWP and we intend to marry a couple of weeks after I get there.  What do I need to do AOS afterwards?'

If it were really that easy, don't you think we would all be doing that?  I've lost count of the number of threads that have been closed recently because of this.

I had to plan from the UK too. Crazy circumstances. I had returned from a mandatory hurricane evacuation of my coastal town. Everything was shut down. No lights, no phones, no gasoline, no stores, food spoiling in fridge, trees down, water leaking into fiance's soon to be closet, fence blown down, part of the chimney two doors down. Six million without power all the way to Houston and beyond. As the town was slowly limping back, I managed to talk to fiancé who had broken his collar bone and some ribs. He had procrastinated and not packed and the movers were picking up his boxes in 2 days. I caught a plane that afternoon to go help him and drive him back to the doctor. So I just stayed two weeks until his planned departure so I could handle the six bags we had between us. He was in a sling and in a lot of pain. I of course had procrastinated the wedding plans thinking I still had a month and not anticipating a hurricane evacuation or fiance injuries. Somehow I made many arrangements from the UK and we married the 5th day we arrived back in the US. He took off his sling for the wedding tongue.png. Our fifth anniversary is in October and we have yet to have a decent celebration on any of them. Maybe I should book a fancy trip for it right now and hope something doesn't get in the way. We are so happy, it doesn't matter if we celebrate a date really. Every day is awesome.

Your story really touched me.  Especially 'We are so happy, it doesn't matter if we celebrate a date really. Every day is awesome.'

Sometimes I have to pinch myself that I have ended up 4000 miles away from everything I've ever known to be with the man I love.  I never thought it would happen to me and I would get married at the age of 50!  We had a little celebration for being married a month on Monday and he e-mailed me the next day to say 'As we enter this second month as husband and wife, I am more happy that I married you than when I actually married you last month.'

I planned all our wedding from the UK - it looked like I was going to arrive 2 days before the wedding, so I needed to!  As it happened, I actually arrived 2 weeks before the wedding.  I just used Skype to speak to people and arrange the waiver we needed for the marriage license as we were getting married in a different state to where we live.  It's not ideal but it is the marriage that matters more than the wedding.

Why are all these forms so complicated?!

DS-156k says documents must be attached, but we're actually not supposed to attach them??

I know but remember that these forms cover a wide range of immigration purposes AND countries.

The 'packet 3' letter supersedes what is on the form i.e. DO NOT send any supporting documentation to the embassy in London.

Darn so would u recommend no coffee just before i get there? I make take a couple of aspirin just in case

I drank decaffeinated coffee for a while. A mild diuretic can also help - like the water retention tablet you get.

Mostly, just try to relax as best you can and practice deep breathing to reduce your blood pressure (a friend of mine couldn't believe that I managed to reduce my blood pressure when under such pressure!)

I am worried about my blood pressure but I know i can control it if i stay calm and dont psyche myself out

I had the same problem. I just asked the doctor to let me sit quietly for 30 minutes and test me again. It had gone down sufficiently to pass. I stopped having caffeine for a couple of weeks beforehand- so no cola just before the medical!

Can we send in all the forms except the cover sheet and wait till we have our dates and all our documents/sponsorship etc ready then send that in for interview date?

I sent all the forms together including the cover letter as I was completely ready for the interview (well - my medical was in 10 days).

the official line is 'send all the forms, except for the DS-2001, first.  When you have all your documentation ready, then send the DS-2001 together with a covering letter stating that you are ready, your medical and wedding dates and your e-mail address.'

This is the cover letter I sent:

Just wondering on the Cover letter should I include that I've bought my flight ticket for the USA

What I put was:

Our wedding is booked for July 12th 2013 (my fiancé?s birthday ? see attached confirmation) and I hope to leave the UK on July 10th 2013.

I thought that sounded a bit better than 'I have a flight booked for 10 July'.  It's just that the official lines are 'don't make plans that can't be changed'.  As it worked out, I flew to the US on 27 June as I was able to change my ticket from 10 July to 27 June.

Hi guys

I got my interview letter through yesterday. My appointment is on the 15th Aug! biggrin.png

Brilliant news!

Thanks I have read it and made guides of my own. smile.png I was asking about the info I put on the DS-156 form it will populate all my information and create a unique id for us so when they scan it they can see all our info we have filled in...? Asking more of it's purpose... that's why I imagine it's there for to self populate in their system but of course yes; I was planning on making lots of copies of each and everything I send.

Thank you! smile.png

The bar code on the DS-156 contains all your responses to the questions.  Therefore, if you need to change anything, you need to generate it again to update the bar code.  Do not add anything in pen, it has to be all done on the computer.

ON THE DS-156K Do you send any information like birth certificate and police check?

No - all the supporting documentation is taken with you to the interview.  Refer back to your 'packet 3' letter where it says 'Do not send us any documents' or something to that effect.

Thanks everyone for the info about the traveling...I called DOS today and our medical results have been entered as of Monday and our case status shows it was touched again today...we're hoping this is them entering our Packet 3 forms so we're not going to risk him coming here for the week when we are still trying for an expedited interview.

The woman from the congressman's office is going to email them back as soon as I hear that Packet 3 is in the system (tomorrow or Friday) to say please schedule the interview..so hopefully we are close.

I asked her if she's had a lot of success doing this and said she's only had 3 requests - one of them was three years ago for her daughter who married a Brit so this explains why she is so helpful and passionate about trying to help us. She checks in with me daily. smile.png

It's great that you have someone pushing for you so much.  The fact that her daughter married a Brit explains a lot!

i think you  have made the right decision not to travel - it wouldn't look good if they said 'OK.  We have a cancellation.  We can interview you tomorrow' and your fiance is in the US!  I had a similar situation.  they sent me an interview date and it was the least convenient date as we were away in Devon.  But I changed my schedule rather than ask the Embassy to change the interview date.  i just thought 'I've been pushing them for a date.  How can I say that the date isn't convenient?  After all, this is the most important interview of my life!'

So in the letter write when my medical is? Ive also got my flight booked and my wedding book. Do I state that too?

I included my wedding date and confirmation of our wedding booking.  I don't know if that helped but I got an interview on 18 June when my medical was only on 30 May!

Note what it says on this page - http://london.usembassy.gov/iv_15.html:

When you have obtained all of the required documents and are prepared for the visa interview, you are required to complete the Notification of Applicant(s) Readiness, Form 2001 and mail it to the Immigrant Visa Unit together with a covering letter containing your email address, if applicable, date of your wedding and date of the medical examination.

Nothing here again today. I live in central London btw, 3 miles from the US Embassy. The last date logged on CEAC is still 30 July, that was when my fiance called DOS and they told him packet 3 was in the hands of Royal Mail.

We will be doing our medicals tomorrow, as booked two weeks ago when we got our Case number, that can't be changed now. I'm also going to send all my completed forms in next Monday whether I get packet 3 or not.

After that we're flying to the US to wait out for the interview date there, I've got to get my kids into the start of the school year there so we'll go temporarily and come back when the interview is scheduled. I know getting in is a risk but I have plenty to prove we've got to come back, aside from an unfinished K-1 process which I'm not about to abandon, I have to finish selling my house for a start. All this USCIS transfer BS and the incredibly sluggish London Embassy is costing us an extra £3k in airfares for the double trip now but we can't sit here and wait for things to happen any more.

GL to all of us still waiting....

If you know that 'packet 3' letter has been sent to you, then you are safe to send in the forms.  All the 'packet 3' letter tells you is to go to this page - http://london.usembassy.gov/iv_15.html

The most recent 'packet 3' letter posted on here is Dan's post here - http://www.visajourn...w-thread/page-2 - post 18.

Does anyone have a more recent letter that they can scan (removing the personal details) and post to help people going through the current situation.  I can scan mine but it is 2 months old and looks the same as Dan's.

What I normally said was 'I see on the CEAC site that there was an update to our file on 30 July (for example).  Please can you tell me what that update was about?'

The person told me to call the UK embassy sad.png

Im going crazy here sad.png

Whats the uk number now

Maybe they're a bit p!ssed with the extra phone calls from the UK - it seems that the London Embassy are going through some glitches at the moment.

020-3608-6998 is the U.S. Visa Information and Appointment Services

020 7499-9000 is the Embassy switchboard

Be prepared to be passed around the Embassy.

Just getting credits on my skype... unsure to get the us monthly or just put 10pounds on it ... Im worried there going to say something to make me cry sad.png

I just used to put $10 on at a time but I also had auto-pay when it dipped below $10 so I never got cut off mid call.

Having been exactly where you are now (it took me 11 months from submitting our I-129F to entering the US), I understand your concern about phoning.  But I have always thought it is better to know something and then deal with it than not know.

I guess I should call them... I hope they don't take forever to answer... calling o skype could cost sad.png but I hope I get a clear answer.

Thank you

When I've phoned, they answer straight away (unlike NVC) and are very helpful.  It cost me pennies on Skype.

OK. As long as you are a K1 you do not need a letter to take to the medical.

You need to take your police certificate, any vaccination records, passport photo (either UK or US size) and the means to pay about 240 pounds (debit or credit card).

Packet 3 letter asks you to go to the Embassy website (something like IV-15.HTML) and follow the instructions for the gorms that need to be completed.

Packet 4 is the interview letter telling you the date of your interview.

In the unlikely event that your medical results arrive at the Embassy before your case is registered, it may cause some confusion as your case number on your medical will not match a case they have registered.

Sorry, I'm on my cellphone so can't tell. Are you a K1?
