CanadaExciting News!!

PS - don;t forget to tell USCIS :D Not that you could forget that awesome, friendly bunch!

How could I possibly forget those lovely people!! On the bright side, their office will only be about 20mins from where we will be living so I won't have to travel so far if I need something...lol

We are really hoping to get something new or 10yrs old at the very least. A lot of the things we really want in a home, you generally don't find in an older home. And as much as I would love to get something older and cheaper, then renovate to our liking, but with a 6 month old it makes it a bit difficult, and we also want to have a 2nd child pretty soon, so it will just be far to difficult.

I can't wait until we get all the details...we still don't know when he will be starting,so it is hard to start planning anything :(

CanadaExciting News!!

Just a heads up about new construction they can be just as bad as older ones.
Iv seen homes that were brand new with bad issues.

A friend of ours bought a brand new home that wasn't quite finished so they could pick their carpets and such that were getting put in. All was great till the company came and had to redo the drive way twice, as well as fix the electrical and then brand new windows were leaking!

No home is "perfect" make sure you get a very good home inspection, make sure to be there for the home inspection and ask lots of questions! My friends were lucky that they got it all repaired by the company.

HGTV also has shown some " first time buyer " shows where the people bought new homes and had horrendous problems with the new homes!

Oh I know...they build houses so fast these days there is lots of stuff that is sub-standard and they try to build them so cheap so in order to make some more profit they cut a lot of corners. I was more referring to all the issues with the liens and such.

I am actually an architectural technologist, so I am pretty knowledgeable on all the building standards and stuff, and with the VA they do very thorough inspection as well. And with a new home you get some warranty so if there is anything wrong at least you have something to fall back on.

CanadaExciting News!!
So back in March we moved to a cheaper apartment so that we could start saving up some money to eventually buy a house. But not even 2 weeks after that my husband lost his job, so that put off the home buying and burnt off all the money we had started to save. He has been working a temp contract at this distribution center that is closing down and moving to Nashville. A couple of weeks ago the facility manager pulled him aside and suggested that he apply for a management position in the new warehouse. So of course he did, and they told him tonight that he got the job!!! It is a very good opportunity for him, and since we really don't have any firm roots set here, it was an easy choice to move. The only thing is that it is the 4th time I will have moved in 1.5yrs!!!

Back in Sept he had applied for a VA home loan (in hopes of us buying a home this past spring) and we just got a letter in the mail that we were approved for that. So I am hoping that we will be able to actually buy a home there. When he was first told to apply I started looking at some homes, and you can get a pretty decently priced new homes there. After reading all the issues Kimbear is having, I think we will try to stick to new construction

We were starting to think of moving back to Canada, but I think that will be put on the back burner for now.

CanadaK-1 people waiting for interviews at Montreal
I was logged at the beginning of Nov, and my interview isn't until Mar 30th (so the last of the group). And I am fairly sure I was one of the earlier ones logged in this batch of interviews. So I don't think it has anything to do with when you were logged....more on what pile you happen to be in!!

How do you even find out that it was logged?

You can call DOS and give them your case # and ask if it has been logged. They can also confirm if all the paperwork they require was included. (I think the # is 202.663.1225....off the top of my head!!) This is also where you can call to find out if an interview has been scheduled.

Laura, is your fiancee on active duty? You can get an expedited interview if he is.

Do they have to be active duty or have orders to be deployed? I know we inquired about getting an expedite at the beginning of the process since my fiance is active duty, but we were told that it was only if you had orders to be deployed, so I am not sure if the rules are different for the interview part. If it is only needing to be active duty, then I would like to look into that.

I have been calling weekly asking the dreaded "any interview yet" question crying.gif Still waiting!! The waiting definitley is most difficult the closer you get to the end.

Any word on your interview ColleenS? Our packet 3 was only a couple days behind you, so we may be close together on the interview. Last Friday, DoS told me everything looked perfect but that Montreal had not assigned a date yet. This waiting/no control is the worst.

I have yet to call this week...I usually do Wed and Friday calls, but so far I haven't heard anything. They told me that they have all the paperwork they need, so it is just waiting for them to schedule.

I sent my packet 3 in at the end of Oct, and it took about a week and a half before it was logged. I had called last week about a potential issue, and they told me that everything they required had been received and I am just pending an interview. So I am assuming that you can ask if all req'd docs have been received as well.

I have the full packet 3 from Montreal scanned, but I am not sure how I send it to you to be posted. It is in pdf format. It includes the check list (not checked or signed) and all the other instructions as well. It is the full 10 pages.

Yeah I figure a good scan will probably be fine as well. I just exerted a little more effort and found a copy of the page that tells you what forms etc to fill out. I was just going to have her overnight me the whole package but it seems a tad pointless if all I need is the checklist. Guess I'll get to work on all these forms....ugh....I'm so sick of all the paperwork. How many more years of this do we have left? lol

I am waiting for my P3 as well....I called on Wed and was told it had been sent out. I just did a search on the forums here to find out what paperwork they asked for, and I went ahead and filled it all out. I have my long BC, my Police Check, and have booked my medical alrealdy. So once I get it I can just put it right back in the mail again. Filling out all the forms is a PITA tho.....you answer the same questions over and over again. And put in the same info over and over again!! I am hoping the get the P3 in the mail today since I am heading down to see my SO for the weekend and won't be back till Wed. I want to get the info in and hopefully get in on this wave of interviews and have a slight hope of being there for Christmas!!!

I am a bit behind all of you with my immigration timeline. I just called to see if my packet 3 had been sent out. She informed me it had (yeah!) and that I did not have an interview scheduled as of yet....lol They must be anticipating that question today!!

With all the K1 interviews being scheduled yesterday, I am wondering now if it would still be beneficial to try to move it to the Van consulate (I could 'move' to my parents in Alberta so that would be possible) or wait it out at Montreal. I am being laid off from my job at the end of Nov, so I was hoping to not have to wait too long for the interview....and as of last week going to Van seemed like the best choice! Now I am torn sad.gif

If you moved to western Canada, would your file be moved from Montreal to Vancouver? I am being laid off at the end of Nov, and was hoping not to have to use too much of my severance package to support me here, as having the money for a wedding, AOS, and to help support us while I wait for EAD and find a job. All of my family lives in Alberta, so maybe it would be better to move out there at the end of Nov and wait for my interview in Vancouver. Would there be any drawbacks to this?

CanadaTrouble With Toronto Medical

I had the blood test done, though not varicella. They took my verbal assurance that I had chicken pox in the past. Apparently they don't do a titre test for tetanus/diptheria/pertussis in Ontario anymore, or so says the "required immunizations" form they gave to my doctor. (There's a place to check to have that titre test done, then big bold letters saying NOT DONE IN ONTARIO).

So, make sure to have a tetanus shot, I guess.

Hmm..that is odd because I had mine done it Ontario with no issues. I just went to my doctor and she requested the blood work. I know that some people have a problem getting the Tdap shot and not just the Td shot, so maybe it has something to do with that. Mine was just the titre test for the Td

CanadaTrouble With Toronto Medical
I'm sorry that you had to go through all of that, it is stressful enough without a hassle.

For those who still need to have a medical done and have incomplete or can't obtain their imminization record I would higly recommend that you request titre tests for all the vaccinations that you are required to have including varicella. The tests do not cost anything in Canada, and they only require a few blood draws. It will save a lot of stress. I had this done, and it took about a month for my Dr to get all the results, so it does require you plan ahead a little bit.

I am sure that everything will work out fine for you.

CanadaJust for fun...when is the next time you're going "home" to Canada?

I've used Priceline for car rentals but am leary to do it for flights because I don't know how much choice you have in booking the actual flight times and non-stop, things like that. I have a horror of getting locked into a flight with 2 lay-overs that starts at midnight and gets in the following night at midnight or some thing like that. How much control do you have - if any - over the details involved in the flight. Can you specify non-stop and that it leaves in the morning and returns in the afternoon?

You don't have a lot of control when booking. Your flight can be from anywhere from 10am-10pm and you can't specify that you want to leave in the am or pm. They attempt to give you the flights with the least amount of stops and the least time between stops. I think it would depend on what airports you are leaving from and going to if you would get a non-stop flight. I have done my last 2 flights through this and have only had one connection in Chicago. They were between 1-2hrs for the layover, which works well for me travelling with the baby. It gives me enough time to change her, grab a bite to eat and get to whereever my next gate is. I also did name your own price a few times when we were dating LD (I was in Ottawa so I always left from Syracuse) and always got fairly reasonable flights. Since I am still at home with Emma, I am pretty flexible with my time so I just book my trip a day or 2 longer to account for having a departing flight that happens to be later in the evening flight or a returning flight that leaves early in the am.

yeah it looks like we won't be going to Canada next month.. ticket prices are just too high.. we might take a little trip to the Grand canyon though

Have you tried using pricelines name your own price? I just did that for my trip home and got a flight from Knoxville to Edmonton for $500, and I think if I would have bid a bit less I may have got it for $450 as they were offering the flight with rental car for about $530. I booked about a week and a half before my departure date. You could always try that route and if your bid gets accepted you are off to Canada, if not you go to plan B!

CanadaJust for fun...when is the next time you're going "home" to Canada?

Hey guys another ? from a newbie..sorry im just so full of questions.. wondering how long after we enter the US to get married can we get paperwork to come back to visit? i promised DS he could return for hockey camp? and now im wondering if thats possible? the first year anyways.

We are lucky tho FI travels a lot for work so we will probably accompany him to most trips to To, Ott, Montreal so we can sneak in visits with everybody..And i can stock up on stuff i cant get in the US..

Once you get married you will file your AOS(adjustment of status) paperwork. At the same time you can file for EAD (employment authorization) and AP(advance parole). The AP takes around 60-90 days to recieve after you apply.

CanadaJust for fun...when is the next time you're going "home" to Canada?

That is awesome, Colleens. And congratulations to your sister on her recovery! My cousin had to have her reconstructive surgery created from her belly fat because there wasn't enough skin to use an implant. It looks fabulous! The only thing was she had hardly any belly fat to begin with, so she had to eat a lot of junk food. We laughed at her getting to eat McDonalds without any guilt whatsoever. lol

That would be awesome if I was just a short drive away. You are really lucky, chyiochan. :)

Thanks Krikit...they ended up using the fat and skin off of her back. She will have to go in in about another 6 months once the swelling has gone down to get the other side to "match up" She has been release from the cancer center so that is a very good sign!

CanadaJust for fun...when is the next time you're going "home" to Canada?
I just booked a flight home to Canada for a week (leaving on the 31st and coming back the 7th...I am so excited). I got a GREAT deal on priceline using the name your own price feature ($500 return from Knoxville to Edmonton). My mom and sister were supposed to come here for a visit, as my sister just had her reconstruction surgery after having a mastectomy last year, and was going to do some revocering by the pool here!! But her and her husband decided to buy a second home and the closing date is right when she was planning on visiting here. My mom was still going to visit, but the flights were over $1000 to come here from Edmonton. And since we only have a small apt we don't have a spare bed, so that would mean a hotel stay as well.

So now I will go home and help my sister move. She still can't really lift any boxes or anything, so she can entertain Emma and I will do all the lifting for her!! She thinks it is a pretty good deal!! I have told my sisters and brother and my extended family knows through facebook about the visit, but it will be a surprise for my parents. I get in late so my sister will pick me up and we will stay at her place. She is going to tell mom that she is babysitting for a friend and I will hide when mom comes over, so it will be interesting to see if she recognizes Emma. I think she will but it will take her a few minutes to put it all together and figure out how Emma got there  I have surprised her like that before and the look on her face is priceless, so I can't wait.

I was just home at the beginning of March, so I don't know when I will get back. I would love to be home for Christmas, but with Si and I both starting new jobs (I will have to go back to work in July :crying: ) I doubt we will be able to get time off. Not only will it be Christmas, but also Emma's 1st birthday and I would have liked for my family to be able to share in that.

CanadaGreencard holder with expired foreign passport. Can I travel to Canada by land?
And depending on what country you hold citizenship for, you may be required to also have a visa. http://www.cic.gc.ca...visit/visas.asp is a list of which countries require a visa.

I have been asked what my status is in the US when I have returned to Canada (I guess since I put a US address on my customs card and check the card as a visitor). They haven't asked for my green card tho. Both times I have gone to Canada since I have had my GC I have had my LO and have been travelling alone, so I think they didn't want to ask me for anything more then they absolutely needed

CanadaPossible ways to get visa for US... very confused.
You are correct about the work visa and having your father employ her. A work visa will not be issued unless they can not find an american that is qualified to do the job.

As for a relationship type visa you only have 2 options. A K-1 fiance(e) visa or a CR-1 spousal visa. A K-1 requires the american citizen to send in a petition (i-129f) to USCIS. Once that is approved the foreign party can apply for the visa. Once the visa is approved and issue, you have 6 months to move to the US. Once in the US you have 90 days in which to get married. After marriage you must apply for adjustment of status (AOS) to get your work authorization and conditional green card. The petition/visa process runs in the 9-12 month range, then another 3-6 month to recieve your green card (once you apply for AOS).

The CR-1 visa requires that you are married first. Again you petition USCIS to bring your spouse to the US, then he/she applies for the Visa. The time frame is a little closer to 12months, but you get your greencard right away (no applying and waiting for AOS once you get to the US).

The only other option you may look into is a student visa and go back to school, but she would not be able to work. And since it is a non-immigrant visa she would have to return to Canada once her study time is up.

And if you go through all of this and decide to move abroad, she will not retain her US permanenat residency.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of options available to you in your situation.

CanadaRenewing Green Card issue
My MIL had to renew her GC back in Oct last year. I went with her to the ASC to get her biometrics done, and they did them several times until they got a good set. Yesterday she recieved a notice in the mail saying that they had scheduled her a 2nd appointment to have biometrics done and that the fist one were deemed unclassifiable.

She never recieved a notice for the 2nd appointment so obviously did not go to it.

So she has now been denied due to abandoment, and the only way they said that she can do anything about this is to file a I-290B and pay $630. Is there anything she can do without having to pay this fee as she does not have that money.

Is this something she needs to make an infopass appt for?

TIA

CanadaIs it possible to raise a Canadian in the US?
Even though my little girl is only 7 months old, I already talk to her about Canada. We read stories about Canada and I will try to find some canadian kids shows on-line that she can watch now and then as well. We also try to expose her to some British things as well since Hubby is a dual US/British citizen (he was born in England). We will do our best to ensure that she has as much exposure to her other citizenships as we can and hopefully she will soak up and learn to appreciate all the things that make Canada and England great countries as well.

CanadaExtremely home sick

I think I will like it more when I have friends and a Job... Im still a nobody.

It has been hard for me. With my EAD taking forever and getting it when I was 7.5 months pregnant, I wasn't even able to start working. Now that I have the LO I am on mat leave until the end of July and I need to start looking for a job. As much as I hate to send my LO to daycare I think I need to get out working and interacting with other adults again for my own sanity. My situation has made it very diffucult to meet friends, and most of the other moms I have met with LO's the age of mine are usually about 15yrs younger and there is a big generation gap. I have always met and made good friends through playing sports and I have not been able to do that since I have been here. I am hoping things turn around a bit. We are starting to plan moving back to Canada tho. We have a few legal issues to figure out first then we will be on our way. I did want to wait until I had citizenship, but I know that it would kill my family to wait that long!

CanadaHi there! Newbie and have a few questions

It took us a year to get our stuff together to file for his Visa, in the mean time I lost my job, started back to college... this all makes me want to cry.

The POE was really nice, and said he'd never come across this issue before. He called his supervisor and she didn't know what to do. So they called yet another person, and it was finally decided he had to import the car to Canada. The reason being is does not have a definite time of returning to the US to immigrate. The POE did tell him that since the car was bought in TN and he will re-register the car there, that import fees would be reimbursed once he moves. That doesn't sound right to me.

He's in Grand Forks at a hotel for the night. He has a friend coming from Winnipeg to get him and take him to his parents house.
We decided to put the car in storage in Grand Forks his parents go to Grand Forks all the time, so they will check on the car when they are there. (only $40 a month) instead of going through the BS of importing the car, him missing work (he has to be back Monday), having the car safety-ed in Alberta, new registration/insurance etc, then turning around and re-importing the car back to the US. It's bad enough that he will now have to fly from Winnipeg to Calgary.

When he is finally able to move I'll fly to Grand Forks, get our damn car back and help him move. We are going to have the import fiasco soon enough anyway when he moves with his motorcycle. The whole reason we bought the car is because it's a Ford Explorer with a tow package so he could tow a trailer with his stuff when he moves. Sooo aggravating!

Stephen&Kim, I live on the other side of the state near Knoxville :) But Welcome to Tennessee!

We have crossed at Emerson/Pembina numerous times, with out any problems. They kind of look at me funny when I tell them I'm married to a Canadian citizen and I'm a full time student with out a job at the moment. But they have always let me in. I have a NEXUS card, so it's pretty easy, it only takes me a few minutes to get through.

As far as the money order thing goes. Money Mart better refund our money!

I have no suggestions for you on this issue, but just wanted to tell you that I am in Knoxville as well, so if you ever want another Canadian to hang with, let me know!!

CanadaGeneral Runaround

You have to laugh or you cry. Talk about the royal runaround. We have been trying to track down my passport and visa. We phone the Senator, she says she will get on it and get back to us, no answer. We phone Wash and tell them that the Senator's office doesn't return phone calls, he will look into it, nothing. Write to montreal-iv-dv@state.gov, get the automated response saying "We don't look into cases, please contact" contactus_en_ca@usvisa-info.com. We did, automated response is "We don't look into cases of missing passports or visas, please contact montreal-iv-dv@state.gov. Talk about frustrating!!! The little peons have no "IN" at the embassy's. I did write the Supervisor but as yet have heard nothing back and according to thier automated response I won't as its an individual case. This is a lot of BS. Who to call now???

When I was having issues with my AOS I contacted our congressman's office and had my issue resolved within a couple of days. They generally have someone on staff that deals with strictly immigration issues. It only takes a couple of minutes, so it is defintiely worth trying.

CanadaQuestion about staying in the states
Did you fly or drive?

One time when I flew when they stamped my passport at the pre-clearance with the entrance stamp they put the date that I said I was planning on returning within the stamp, and that was when I had to return. It was the only time that they ever put a date in that space. I would check to see if they have entered a date within your entrance stamp. If not then you should have no issues staying longer.

CanadaPolice Certificate older than 12 months
I believe that you are required to have a police certificate for every place that you have lived for 6 months or more since the age of 16, and those certificates must not be older than 1 year. I would suggest that you look into getting a current one, as it can delay you by months with the current processing times in Montreal if they ask for a current one at the interview and you do not have it, as well as the additional time that it will take to obtain a new one from Australia. A little bit of hassle now can save you a lot of grief in the future!!
