Just got my driver's license renewed, took 2 weeks. Had no idea that in BC, you can renew your license 6 months in advance!

Had I know that, I would have done it earlier. At least I have a valid license, as my departure date is approaching SOON!

CanadaVancouver Interviews

Thanks so much for the replies and the info! We are all set and ready to go. I should have case number from NVC today and will give it to my fiance to start calling US embassy in Vancouver at the end of this week or beginning of next. We are going to ask for emails so we can turn it around quicker and same day. I really hope my fiancee can be here before Thanksgiving!!! Stupid VSC is so delayed and I am so happy to have moved on from there!!!!!

I see the new medical is in Surrey and they give the results back the next day after 4pm. Once you get through to Surrey for medical, are they booked out a week in advance? Or is it just the issue of getting ahold of them.

Thanks!

FYI: The US Consulate in Vancouver (aka Embassy) does NOT take phone calls. Email only vancouverK@state.gov

CanadaVancouver Interviews

I scheduled my October 26 interview around September 20th.. it's about a month out when I was booking. I could've had it a few days earlier but for various reasons picked October 26. So if you are booking today I would guesstimate you could have an interview in the last week of November? But remember that you can't book your interview until you've booked your medical (well, you could but they tell you not to so I didn't want to chance that) and it took me over a week to get ahold of Dr. Cheema. And don't forget you have to complete Packet 3 and Packet 4 as well.

Btw the wait from NOA2 to Packet 3 is just over 3 weeks - you can probably get it a few days faster than I did by emailing the consulate and getting them to email it to you instead of waiting for snail mail once it gets to that stage.

Hey... good luck on your upcoming interview :)

CanadaVancouver Interviews

It seems like there are not too many Vancouver people on here. Maybe someone can help? Does anyone know how far out Vancouver is scheduling interviews??? We just got our NOA2 a week ago and were trying to plan for the holidays coming up! Thanks!

Hello from a fellow Vancouverite... not for long... (Moving to Maui November 1st)

Anyway... hopefully my experience will help you with yours.

After NOA2 (May-10-2012) about a one month wait (June-07-2012) before USC or myself heard from anyone. We both got letters, (same day) his was from the NVC & mine was from the US Consulate in Vancouver (aka 'Packet-3).

I'd say make plans. Once your letter from the Van. Consulate comes, it just directs you to their website, to complete 'Packet-3' (P3)
You can do some of it ahead of time, which I highly recommend if you have the time. It's a checklist of things to do.
If you do 'P3' ahead of time, always verify your checklist with the latest P3 version/link that the Consulate gives you. I downloaded a version of P3 months before I got my letter & a few things were different. Just a heads up.

Once you complete the 'checklist', you fax it off (I scanned & emailed ) .. they get back to you via email & you can then book your appointments. Med & Interview.
At that point, you will then be able to see what the interview schedule is like. It's much like booking an airline ticket. Medical is now different from when I did it. There's a thread somewhere about it.

Well, I think that information should help.

Enjoy your holidays...

Cheers..

CanadaPOE at YVR

I didn't end up entering via YVR because my travel plans changed due to Hurricane Sandy. I was redirected on a flight to Toronto and since I was connecting, the customs line was fairly short so I decided to just wait in line and play it safe.

Thanks for clarifying CANbirdUSman.

Don't use the Nexus line. You are not 'visiting' or entering temporarily. You are presenting yourself at the border and requesting permission to enter on a specific visa that will allow you to apply for Permanent Residence status and 'remain' in the US. You will need to go into secondary inspection and have your documents processed. The Nexus lane is for those with permission for expedited entry - you do not fit into that category when you are entering on a visa.

Kathryn41 you are correct. Do NOT use Nexus Card.

My flight & POE is from YVR tomorrow. I'm staying at a hotel here at YVR, so I walked over to the Nexus counter and asked this very question, and a CBP (Customs Border Patrol) woman explained it to me, much like it was explained by Kathryn41.

Thank you to OP, who brought up this topic.

ps- CBP woman said to update Nexus information when 'Green Card' is issued.

Happy Halloween !

CanadaPOE at YVR

I'm going to POE at YVR. Can I use the nexus line or do I have to take the regular line since I have to show them my passport and tell them I'm about to activate the K-1? I feel like it's better to just stand in line with everyone else but if it's long, I'm very tempted to just use my nexus.

Also, what changes do I have to notify nexus with once I start the AOS and become a PR?

You're timeline says POE October 28th. Looking forward to hearing how it went. (With or without Nexus...?)

My POE with YVR is coming up November 1st.. (I also have a Nexus Card. Will report back as well)

Happy POE to you!

While you still have to undergo security screening, the NEXUS card can get you where you need to be faster.
I'd like to hand over that envelope ASAP and get the whole POE process rolling ASAP.

I think we need to hear from someone that's a Nexus card holder that has used it...

CanadaQuestion about Tax Rebates (GST, HST, etc)

GST/HST rebates are not valid after POE. You will have to pay back the CRA with interest.

OHIP is forfeited when you POE as well. Many VJers get temporary insurance to cover them until they're under their spouse's coverage.

The CRA just sent me a GST/HST rebate check for $16.66 at my US address. They are NOT on the ball.

Seriously! I contacted them accordingly, after my POE in November, and gave my change of residency. They sent a letter my US address, stating I was 'NO longer eligible for rebates, because I'm no longer a Canadian resident. But then they send me a check? What the?

I'm going to mail it back, with a copy of the letter they sent.

-NO to gst; non-resident as of November 01st, not eligible.

Because my marital status changed, I was unable to use Turbo Tax, so I used the 'online' forms available on the CRA site, and mailed everything out, the 'old-school' way. THANK goodness I had last years tax return as a guide! My Dad, who's always done his own taxes for decades, looked them over. He found 1 error. It's good to get someone else, who likes numbers, to look through that stuff.

Well, fingers crossed Ottawa gets my 'package'.

CanadaCANADIAN 2012 Tax Return

Some say to fill out NR 73 some do not. I talked to Revune Canada years ago and they told me it is not a "must" On your Cdn income tax return--on the front page somewhere--it asks Whewn you became OR CEASED to be a CDn Resident---just plot down the date you Ceased to be a Cdn resident! Thats all I did!! For fun, I asked for the GST rebate--knowingly I made to much $--I received a letter stating I was not entitled to it as I was no longer resident based on my Previous tax return! Just my 2 cents---why fill out more govt paperwork, lol

Yeah, .... extra paperwork does suck...

Now that I've looked at the CRA website, again, regarding the NR73 form it says...
"If you want an opinion about your residency status, complete and submit ...."

The answer is NO. I'm not looking for an opinion.

Thanks for your '2 cents' . Less paperwork is more better Posted Image

CanadaCANADIAN 2012 Tax Return
Happy New Year !

Just started receiving my T4's ( in the US they're called W2's ) ... thought I'd call the CRA (Canadian Revenue Agency) and inquire if I need to do anything differently, since I no longer reside in Canada. And this is what I was told...

(1) Fill out form NR73 - Determination of Residency (link from CRA site)
(2) Fill out Standard Tax Form for 2012. Include applicable changes; address, marital status, name.

I also asked about next year, 2013, regarding my Canadian Bank Accounts. This information goes on the 2013 US tax form, SOMEWHERE under something like 'interest earned from foreign investments' ... if you 'own property in another country', there's a spot for that too.

ONE year at a time right!

Cheers!

-ps- I've used Turbo Tax for the past 2 years. Super easy & safe & cheap!

CanadaCanada Immigration and K1 Guide for Vancouver

So I saw someone mention "wouldn't it be nice if someone wrote a Vancouver guide..." in another post and I thought, Hey - Why not! I borrowed heavily from Ralyse's Montreal Guide - so credit goes to her and the others involved in creating the Montreal guide. Hopefully this helps people out a bit. If not, PM me!

1. NOA2:

Cry and call everyone you know. The long part of the wait is over and now it's time to get your butt to America. The next couple of months are easy if you are well prepared.

2. NVC/DOS:

You may contact them in regard to where your application is. I never did this so if anyone knows the instructions for Vancouver let me know. Otherwise I'll assume they are the same for anyone. It took 28 days to receive my letter from the Vancouver Consulate from my NOA2 date.

3. Packet 3:

Part 1:

- Download Packet 3 from the Vancouver Consulate website. (http://photos.state....-K3-packet3.pdf)
- To communicate with the Vancouver Consulate e-mail is the best method. They generally reply within 2 business days. E-mail: Vancouverk@state.gov
- You can also fax them at 604.688.8537.

Part 2:

Complete and return immediately by fax form DS-230 Part I, Biographic Data. This form is accessible online. Fax to: 604.688.8537.

Part 3:

Obtain each of the following documents that are applicable to your case and for each non-U.S. citizen unmarried child under 21 who will accompany you to the United States. Bring a photocopy if you need your original back.

As you obtain each document check off the box found on your Packet 3. You will need:

- Passport (with 6 months validity)
- Medical Examination (As long as this is done before the Interview it's okay!)
- Birth Certificates (must show that it is an extract from official records and must bear the seal of the issuing authority/must state the names of both parents)
- Evidence in Lieu of an Unobtainable Birth Certificate (if you can't get a birth certificate you need other evidence) Eg: Baptismal certificate, hospital certificate, school recorts, notarized statement from a close relative.
- Marriage Certificate (this is for K3 visas only)
- Divorce and Death Certificates (if you or your fiancé(e) were previously married)
- Police Certificates
- Court and Prison Records
- Evidence of Support (Form I-134 Affidavit of Support)
- Photographs (5 identical passport photos). 3 are for your medical, 2 are for your Interview
- Custody (you must show you have sole custody of any children under 21 that will accompany you).
- Translations
- Form DS-156 Non-Immigrant Visa Application (complete online and print 2 copies for your interview)
- Form DS-156K Non-Immigrant Fiance(e) Visa Application

4. Returning Packet 3:

Once you have collected all of the documents on the Packet 3 checklist you must fax ONLY the checklist back to the Vancouver Consulate (604.688.8537) *** Note: I had been in contact with the consulate via e-mail because I had issues booking my medical exam and never actually faxed this form back, instead they got annoyed with me and sent me Packet 4 via e-mail and I was able to book my Interview immediately.***

5. Wait:

Usually the Vancouver consulate will mail you Packet 4. Sometimes they e-mail it to you. I don't know. West Coast is a bunch of unpredictable hippies.

6. Schedule your Interview:

Lucky for you, I have the inside scoop. Basically Packet 4 tells you to book your appointment. Easy. *Do not book your interview until you have received Packet 4 or have been told it is on its way*

"This office has received notification that you now have all of the required documents pertinent to your visa application, and you are ready to schedule your visa interview. To schedule an appointment, including rescheduling and canceling appointments, please visit http://canada.usvisa-info.com. All visa applicants, including children under the age of 14, must schedule an appointment."

- Packet 4 also includes instructions on what to bring/what not to bring on the day of your interview. If you want the entire content of the e-mail I was sent I am happy to PM it to you.
- You can get an interview within 4-6 weeks (or less!) when I was doing all of this. In your face, Montreal! (kidding!)

7. Medical!:

Woking Medical makes the most sense for people going through Vancouver Consulate. Their website is http://www.wokingmedical.com/ . Their bark is worse than their bite, trust me. Their website is scary but just make sure you've done everything well in advance *VACCINATIONS* and you have nothing to worry about.

You could also go back East (copied from Ralyse's Guide):

Dr. Seiden: http://panelphysicians.com/ (Toronto and Montreal)
Medisys: http://www.medisys.ca/ (Montreal)

8. Interview (The day has finally come!):

The Vancouver Consulate is notoriously easy. Just be prepared. Smile. Relax. I've written a review in great length somewhere in the Canada forums so if you want more information read that or PM me so I can ramble at you.

9. DHL:

The second biggest pain in the butt other than waiting for your NOA2. The staff at the Vancouver Consulate give extremely confusing and inaccurate instructions about how to get your Waybill. The waybill doesn't show up until your passport has been processed and the Visa has been put in. If you left your e-mail DHL should send you updates/tracking numbers but they weren't always accurate. Just keep logging into the http://canada.usvisa-info.com website until your waybill shows up. Easy, after logging into USCIS religiously for 5 months!

10. POE:

You can go to the US anytime once you get your passport back. Your Visa expires after 6 months and you can always check which day it is because it's written on your Visa! Yay! Kathryn41 has written a great POE checklist here: http://www.visajourn...s-summary-list/

11. Get Married – within 90 days, of course. Then get ready to obsess over your AOS.

This needs to be PINNED! good work

CanadaCanada Immigration and K1 Guide for Vancouver

Yep, the letter from the consulate has your case number which is required to book your medical. The 28 days includes the approval, sending to NVC, processing, sending the petition to Vancouver, and Vancouver mailing me the letter with instructions on packet 3. Not very long actually. I've heard others say it takes longer :)

My biggest piece of advice is to start getting your documents especially vaccinations together now. The biggest delay I had was getting my vaccinations done so I could book my medical. Woking medical is pretty strict in enforcing the vaccinations.

Glad you liked it. If you have any questions feel free to PM. There aren't too many of us that go through Vancouver!

Thanks for the K1 Guide-VANCOUVER-addition!
SO much easier to follow the advice of others from the same country & city.

I'm waiting for my NOA2. I took your advice from a previous posting, and have printed off a copy of 'Packet 3'. Now I'm checking off and completing whatever forms I can do before the letter from the US Consulate arrives. Getting my lovely photos done Thursday.
(Have to renew my passport too! It expires in Dec. yikes!).

-FYI: For those also waiting for your NOA2....

$40+HST for 'criminal-record-check' @ Commissionaires of BC vs $70 at the Vancouver Cambie St. Police Station.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionResponse time for RFE?

(From-Canadian- K1-Beneficiary)

Cino: you are right that the USCIS site doesn't give "detailed-details" about the RFE. However, from personal experience, the USCIS site did forewarn us that we'd be getting the RFE notice in the mail. No "detailed-details" given on the USCIS site, but a 'heads-up' that an 'old-fashioned' letter was on its way from the USCIS regarding RFE.

In our case, the site was very helpful. Just like the OP, Scott s, my fiance (USC) was away from home for awhile (but for work). He had family collect his mail, and we forewarned them (thanks to the USCIS site) that an important letter was on route from the USCIS. Within a few days, the letter was received, and scanned to myself & my fiance (USC). I was able to get ahead start on what the RFE requested, on behave of my fiance (USC). THE END.

HOPEfully, you won't get an RFE. If you do, you'll have time to deal with it, just like the others have stated.

Cheers and good luck

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresK3 for Canadian
I'm in limbo right now and haven't started anything, but leaning towards the K3. Not ready to move to the US yet because I just started a new job & a family member is ill.

So, why not get married & start the K3 process right? This will allow me to stay in Canada, my husband (to be) visits when he can, and works his seasonal job in the US.

With the K1, I'll have to do the following WHEN the forms tell me to: Quit my job, leave my apt. (or pay for it while I'm gone for 90 days). Can't leave the US without filing out another form that takes too long in case of an emergency.

Has anyone gone through this?

CanadaFINALLY - moving to the US!

UPDATE:

Called BC Health - super easy. He just set a date for me leaving on February 29th - and I was informed it was a leap year. Well, whatdya know.

Called CRA - Horrible. Could barely hear the lady and she told me I needed to call back when I moved so they could put an exit date on my account. I told her the day I was leaving but she informed me they can't put a "future date" on the account. Okay, fair enough. She told me she sent a message to the HST credit (she gave me a name) to cancel my HST benefit but they don't give confirmation numbers so that was more or less useless and I guess I just have to hope she did it!

Sigh!

Congrats on your upcoming move. After reading this thread, I've realized I REALLY need to make a check list!

Hi there!

I feel your pain. Honestly, do what's best for you and your fiance. My fiance & I have talked about where we'd like to get married, I've tried on dresses, and we've made our guest list. And then... we stopped planning for now, until I have my VISA in hand. We haven't made any official decisions, but we might just have something small, then do it up big later. We'd rather put $ towards a house, but we'll see what happens.

CanadaWedding planning and travel with K1 visa

Hello everyone,

I'm just wondering what all of you have done in regards to wedding plans... I was trying to plan a traditional wedding in the States based on when I thought I would have my K1, but am now starting to get scared that these may not line up. Have all of you simply planned to have a small ceremony once the K1 is approved, then organize a bigger reception for later? Or have you had luck planning the reception so that it lined up with your ceremony?

Also, I'm still not having any luck finding out about traveling to the States (from Canada) while the K1 is being processed. It seems to me that you are allowed to travel until your K1 has been processed, but at what step is it considered processed? Once you receive you NOA2? Once it is received at the Embassy? Once you have had your interview? I've tried calling all the typical government sites, but can't seem to get a clear answer one way or the other...

Thanks so much for your advice- I've found plenty of great information on here!

And regarding going to the States, great advice from Kathryn41.Posted Image

CanadaMoving from Vancouver CANADA to HAWAII. Anyone done this?

Not too sure on what our area is called, but I'll be about 10 minutes north from the Airport and Hickam/Pearl Harbor. Moanalua is the area I think. Where will you be? Did you marry into the military as well?

We'll be in Kailua.
Not married yet... but I feel like a military wife. He's job takes him out to sea for months at a time.
Thank goodness for email. Posted Image

CanadaMoving from Vancouver CANADA to HAWAII. Anyone done this?

I'm moving from Toronto to Hawaii (Oahu) and doing the extra baggage route as well. Way cheaper than paying for an international mover. Glad to see I'm not the only one making that huge move

Aloha! Yeah, I'm very happy to know others doing the same move. The extra baggage route sure sounds like the way to go!
Where in Oahu?

ps- (I grew up in Ontario, just outside of Niagara Falls)

CanadaMoving from Vancouver CANADA to HAWAII. Anyone done this?

I just did this exact thing a month ago! I found the easiest thing for me was to sell absolutely all that I could and the rest I paid for extra baggage on the flight out here. It cost about $300 for 8 bags on the flight, but it was way cheaper than shipping it.
What part of Hawaii are you moving to?

Finally! Someone that has actually done the move I'm asking about! Posted Image
(but all the advise is helpful of course...)

Posted Image super deal! $300 for 8 extra bags. SO smart! Never even crossed my mind to do it that way.
Kind of worried about the sentimental breakable stuff. Guess that's what "Fragile" stickers are for.

Best way to get your stuff from point ' A' to point ' B' ? Vancouver to Hawaii move planned in the future.

I'm going to sell what I can, give stuff away. Take as little as possible. BUT we all have stuff to move. And it's expensive! Posted Image

If you've done the move, I've described above, (or similar) your advice is appreciated.

By land, sea or air, we all will somehow get there...Posted Image
