Mexico, Latin & South AmericaWhat do you consider cheating?
Emotional or physical affairs are cheating IMHO. Two rules to live by: 1) don't do anything that you would feel uncomfortable knowing your spouse or SO did, and 2) don't do anything you would feel uncomfortable telling your spouse or SO about, maybe in front of other people. Those two rules have always allowed me to live with a pretty clear conscience.

As an Ukrainian who spent significant amount of time living in the U.S. it irritates the hell out of me too. To be quite honest, I am still in permanent culture shock since coming back 6 months ago. Service everywhere is horrible, and it is especially true for any government agency. Don't let them get to you. Just declare whatever has to be declared and firmly reply to any attmepts of unlawful treatment. You are US citizen, they won't go too far! Hope you'll have a smooth landing and a hassle free entry. That part of Ukraine is especially gorgeous in summer.

Good to know. I am looking forward to going back in September or October, but you are spot on about the service. On the positive side, I am told that it is possible to get out of all but the most serious trouble by throwing some money at it (although I hope never to find out). Other than that, I really enjoy the people and culture of Eastern Europe. and especially Ukraine. I have a soft spot for Kherson and Odessa, because my Vika comes from that area. Her family is awesome, and they appear to have accepted me. We in America could learn a great deal from Ukrainians in terms of hospitality towards strangers and people from other countries.

QUOTE (steelman400 @ Jul 1 2008, 10:01 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
This is only my experiences. I have entered through KBP over 10 times. It was on the early trips with only a couple of entry/exit stamps in my passport. I was asked about money and gifts. I always filled out a customs declaration and always have had over $4,000 on me. One time I was asked to show my money, that was it. It says right on the customs declaration the limit is $10,000, if I remember correctly. Now, with so many entry stamps on my passport, I think they think I must be there on business and I am treated like a number, "move on." The only time I have had a run in was when I had a layover in Amsterdam and my girlfriend gave me a list of cosmetics that she wanted from duty free. A lady at customs said that I would have to pay a gift tax, because of the amount involved. I told her no. She insisted. I said it was duty free. She said it was a gift and I was over the limit. I then told her that I would throw it away before I paid a tax. It was the principal of the whole thing. She finally and reluctantly let me pass, but warned me on the limits for gifts. From then on, I put the gifts in my luggage instead of carrying it in the bag. The delay was 15 minutes.

I have seen many people use the VIP, and they get sent straight through. I do not know how much they get checked, as I am with the masses. I can save the money and wait 30 minutes. I would rather spend my money on my SO. I think it would be worth it if you had an internal flight to another city and were worried about the connection times. Two times it took me over 1 1/2 hours to get through immigration and customs. Just a lot of people, multiple flights arriving close together. I hope this helps, but if you are within the law, you should be good. Just put up with the hassle and don't bend.

Thanks steelman, I appreciate the shared experience. Maybe I had an unusually tough time and shouldn't worry about it, but if there is a chance to eliminate the hassle... I was told to disclose the correct amount and be prepared to argue by a guy that owns a company with an office in Odessa. It just irritates the hell out of me. So far I can't really find any one that uses the VIP service on landing.

Cheers

My first time to Odessa, I was the last guy through customs. I was made to count out my pocket cash, fill out a declarations form (even though it was just a couple of thousand), and then told that I was bringing in too much money and would have to surrender it. I told the agent that I was familiar with the currency limits, and he could arrest me if he wanted but I wasn't surrendering a cent. Needless to say I was warned earlier by some one with more experience in Ukraine to "never lie, or back down" in this situation. They eventually let me go when it became clear that I wasn't going to give them my currency without a hassle. No trouble at all leaving.

The second trip ended about three weeks ago. No trouble going in this time, but on the way out when I answered the agents question about currency, I found myself in a separate queue of Americans, Canadians, Brits, etc. Again the declaration form, then I had to count the money. The purpose of the form was clearly to check my honesty, and presumably carrying more currency than I disclosed would have resulted in another tourist fleecing. I had no trouble, but the guy in front of me told them that he never carries cash, and only had an ATM card. They turned his luggage inside-out. Customs agents were obviously profiling for men from english-speaking countries (even when traveling with their families).

Sorry, what I really wanted to know is if the VIP pickup services get you through customs with less hassle than the regular route.

Hi all,

I am a new member, and I am not sure this is the correct forum for this question, but here goes.... I have been to Ukraine twice so far, since my fiance' moved back to Kherson. Our interview will of course be in Kiev, and I have had a HUGE hassle every time I have been through Ukrainian customs (usually about money). I normally fly into Odessa, but will no doubt go to Kiev directly for the interview. Several transport services online in both cities off VIP airport pickup for around $100. Is this worth the cost? If the $60-$80 of that fee that goes to the airport reduces the entrepenurial activity of the customs agents it seems a bargain. Has any one tried VIP pickup? What was the experience like?

Thanks

Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have ideas about the best way to transfer money from Ukraine to the US. My finacee will receive monthly rental income from her apartments and would like to have money sent to her in the US. We are not sure how much per month the Ukrainian laws will allow to be transfered out of the country. We are also not sure of the cheapest way to transfer money. Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks.
Grid

How will the income be collected? I know that both Western Union and MoneyGram work both directions, but can be expensive. I suggest having the funds deposited directly into an account and drawing it with an ATM transfer or draft. Banks on both ends will make some money, but it will be less expensive than wires. Avoid bank wires, as this direct account to account transfer will be very costly and also allow folks in Ukraine access to account data. Also, have a separate account in the US just to receive the funds - then transfer them out immediately to insulate funds. There should be little or no cost for that. This is my field, so PM me if you need more details

Hello all. I use a phone card called Seminaya (Family) Card, that I bought at a Russian grocery. I call Ukraine, and you all have me thinking that I might be able to find a better deal than the 6-12 cents per minute.

Any way, the card comes from MasterCall/GS-1, and here is the web site www.GS-1.com. I thought it might interest some of you for the following reasons:

1) Cheap rates to many countries in Europe (maybe other places too, but I can't vouch).

2) You can recharge a PIN code online for 90 days (so you buy a $5 card and can put $50 on it if you want).

3) You can buy a card/PIN online

4) If your call fails to connect in Europe - there is no charge when you hang up.

Now if my math is correct, they do charge more for calls to mobile numbers.

If you have something better for Ukraine specifically (Kherson more specifically) I would like to hear about it.

Thanks

Europe & Eurasia (except the UK and Russia)Spouse Support - How much does she need?
Hi Brent, has something changed this week? I thought the gentle-but-firm no was working for you. I see the same issues that the rest of "the guys" see, but I found that a firm no when I think the demand is not necessary works OK. You just have to be prepared for some pouting and disagreement. I think this is pretty common, and I wonder how a Russian/Ukrainian guy would handle it. I just ignore the pouting (easy, because she doesn't much), and meet each request with a firm discussion about budget. This tac came from the sound advice several married VJers gave me. They all told me that immediately caving and sending what is requested is a HUGE sign of weakness, and might earn you doormat status. I am not married yet, but definitely do not want to spend my life as an ATM with feet.

We were in Kyiv for 3 weeks last year, I spent two weeks with my fiancee, now wife in 2005 and I was in Kyiv for 5 days in 2003 when we met. I'm looking forward to exploring more areas of Ukraine in the future. Of course, my wife would rather travel to places in Europe that she's never been to. That's okay with me, since I haven't been to many places there either.

Now, if I can just come up with the time and money at the same time.

That's the trick, no doubt. In Ukraine, try Lviv. We loved it. Most Ukrainians seem to like it too.

Three weeks in Kiev? What all did you do? I am making a list, as we plan to spend a couple of weeks around Vika's interview.

I'm surprised that no one voted for Kyiv either. Probably because so many have already been there. I love Kyiv on a late spring or summer evening. Downtown by Independence Square is great with the streets closed off on weekends. You can sit , listen to live music, drink tea or beer in a sidewalk cafe and just enjoy the people. The underground mall is close and so is the Metro. The city is so rich in culture and history with great ornate buildings, wide streets and sidewalks. My biggest complaint of Independence Square is the McDonalds sign at one end. Leave it to good old American commercialism to take away from a truly beautiful setting.

I wish my town had just a few restaurants of the quality found everywhere in Kyiv. You can sit in a sidewalk setting and enjoy a quiet meal because the cars are parked and no one is constantly driving around. One evening they set of fireworks while we had just sat down at a restaurant. The fireworks were so loud they set off car alarms. I laughed so hard.

Sounds great. I am really looking forward to it. How much time have you spent there?

I would love to visit Lvov/Lviv some time soon. Last year in Kyiv we had a family reunion so not much time for travel. I met my wife's father and brother for the first time. Both said I have to learn to speak Russian. I've been concentrating on improving Lena's English so much that I lost my motivation to learn Russian. But, with so many of our new friends here speaking Russian, it would probably help me a lot.

My wife says that western Ukraine is just so beautiful and rustic (my word) that I really need to visit that part of the country. My only exposure to Lviv was from an airplane window at the airport and it was raining. I didn't see much. I am beginning to think that the Carpathian mountains are a myth. Every time I've flown into Ukraine the mountains have been covered by clouds so I have yet to see even one mountain.

I'm told the mountains are real as my wife has photos to show me. Just looks like a stream with trees to me.

Maybe next year, if we can afford it.

It is awesome. Try the Romanian Carpathians if you really want something different. Sibiu is great, and Brasov is cool.

I haven't been to Odessa or many areas on the west side of Ukraine and my wife tells me the mountain resorts are spectacular. My brother in law just moved to a small town just west of Odessa after living in Ekaterinaburg, Russia for about 14 years. Moved his whole family including his inlaws. His mother in law is in poor health and is happy to be where the air is clear.

I've been to Kyiv, Dnepropetrovsk, Melitopol, Yalta, Simferopol by plane, bus and train but look forward to visiting the outer edges of Ukraine some time.

We were in Kyiv last summer for 3 weeks. I am sorry to say that Kyiv has gotten very crowded and traveling about is not very enjoyable. Also, costs are getting quite high and the government is trying to limit inflation this year to 16.9%. My wife said that as an example a kilo of beets use to sell for 2 hrivna and now they sell for 16 hrivna. That's a lot higher than the 16.9% the government is trying to set.

Try Lvov, near the Polish border. It is really pretty, and not overrun with Americans and Brits. It is the cultural center of Western Ukraine, and new brides even put flowers at monuments to poets, writers, and religious figures instead of war heroes, etc. A totally different feel than Kherson, or Disney/Odessa. I like those cities too though.

Becareful in your traveling back and forth. I would not reccommend taking 2 taxis to go from the US to Mexico, there is really no need in it. It is just a straight shot, and it will only cost between 30-50. I would reccommend 2 from juarez back to el paso. When my husband got out of his interview, we were so excited. We found a taxi and he said he would take us all the way to elpaso for 30 dollars. Well that sounds great. So we said ok. Well after we got to el paso (we had to wait about 45 minutes in immigration) he said we owed him 130 for the wait time. We were so mad, but in the end ended up paying it. So be very careful with this

You have to go to the Oficina de Migracion and ask for permission to marry a mexican. You have to take a birth certificate that has an apostille. You also have to pay like 300. In the end we were denied and we had to reschedule. They said the letter we wrote asking for permission wasnt correct because we put we plan on getting married on a certain date instead of we are going to get married on that date. The whole process took about 3 weeks. I would reccommend getting a Lawyer if possible. The paper work is fairly simple (I did it myself) but I also visited the immigration office 6 times during those 3 weeks.
