Asia: SouthDoes your Country charge Foreigner more than Local?
At one museum in Pakistan they were trying to charge me 20X what they charged locals. My fiance negotiated the price down some. We found that it worked better for him to work out the price of most things without me present. There is deffinitely the idea that all Americans are rich. I deffinitely like to go in stores and have the prices marked on items-I missed that alot!

I never complained much due to the currency advantage when I am in India, but for the sake of fairness,

Is it fair I have to pay 30-40% extra for the same domestic airfare, book at the same time, siting right next to each other.

PAY 10X more than the local to go to a Museum, Went to visit this Palace, my wife got to experience it 1st hand, been to several parts of india so it's kinda normal since I got used to it, but charging 20 Rupees for local and a WHOPPING 200 Rs. for the same ticket doesn't seem reasonable, maybe a small percentage difference but 10 times more is crazy.

Just don't feel it's too tourist friendly to keep overcharging foreigners.

What if we would start charging extra for everybody that's here on H1, B1/B2 to visit our museums, for their airfare ticket?

Here is a shocker people of non-South Asian heritage. When I am in India, somehow, they have a way of knowing without me even opening my mouth that I am a 'foreigner.' My wife says it's the way I dress and walk, but having grown up in my early years in India, I purposely dress very much like a local resident when traveling locally. It cannot be the way I look, because India has too many 'fair' skinned folks.

In the most recent trip to India, I was traveling to Bombay from my hometown in India via the local train in a regular 'second' class car. The food vendor boy comes along with that delicious tea and I asked 'Kitnaa hua?' (How much? - in a slang version of Hindi), he goes (actually jokes), 'Doosro ke liya paanch rupaiya, lekin aap liye paach daallar.' (For others, it's five rupees, but for you it is five dollars). Of course, he smiled after saying that letting me know that he was only kidding around. I gave him ten rupees, but was left bewildered as to how he figured out that I was from the 'United States.' Many similar incidents (mostly humorous) have occured to me every time visiting India and I have yet to find out how to blend-in so that I don't get ripped off...Imagine the irony. I am Indian by heritage, raised in India, speak and write two Indian languages fluently (including slang), look very much Indian and YET, they figure out that I am from the US. I guess this in a weird sort of way of finding out that parts of me have become so American that they are picked immediately by non-Americans. I had similar incident in Switzerland as well. I look Indian, but before I even spoke the restaurant manager knew I was American...

Any explanations? smile.gif

I think that equal man power should be available to process no matter what visa that is being applied for. What I don't understand is why the fiance visa seem to get quicker processing than the spousal visa. We are already married to our loved ones and have put in the time and effort of the relationship, we have made the commitments in our life. Not saying that those that aren't married haven't commited but we have our marriage license and won't need 90 days to get married when we come to the states we just want to have our families together like anyone else. So really don't understand why our process has to be more difficult that the others. Really what since does it make. None...

After reading the letter that was posted I see they are very aware of us here at VJ...... Seeing the letter was not just addressing the K-1 but every Visa process. I pray and hope that know that they have acknowledge us and know what is going on things will start to pick up. Though they did admit that different countries have different volumes of applications but will be doing all that they can. I pray that this process now will be moving along at a better pace.

I totally understand your frustration also but can understand his has well...... If you don't mind may I ask why they denied him??????? And sometimes even though most of them there have a lot of faith and strength some get very discouraged just like us and you have been going through the process a long time maybe this is just his way of trying to release some of the aggrevation he is feeling. I have heard that saying before he used.....and believe it or not I have talked that same conversation with my husband but he is the one that will always refuse to give up. Even if I have to move there we will be together one way or another. So maybe you should really speak to your husband about other options and see how he feels. I'm sure he needs to know that your so dedicated you will do whatever necessary to be with him. Good Lucky my friend and God Bless but always remember Everything works in God's time.......

Africa: Sub-SaharanDating Internationally

warning to all the women, i dont wanna rub anyone the wrong way, were all in the same boat. but i do wanna give you a real friends experience with a man from west africa. he came over on a work visa, about 7 years ago, she met him, and shortly after they started to date. they dated for a year, and she was head over heals in love with him. he had the african work ethic, meaning he did his share of work without complaint. always put her on a pedestal, made her feel special. she was in love and had no inklings about fraud. they got married 5 years ago. OVERNIGHT he was a different person. used words like fat pig, lazy, b word, and actually started abusing her physical as well as emotionally. he got what he wanted from her, which was permanent residence in the usa. if anyone has been to ghana, we all know they worship the ground we walk on, they all have the ''dream'' and will do WHATEVER IT TAKES. of course their parents siblings cousins friends and everyone else make it seem legit b/c they are happy for that person to get ''the chance''. there is nothing that makes me more mad is a man touching a woman like he did to my good friend. i cried many nights with her as she was down after getting beat up and felt ultra low.

on top of all the bad things going on in her life, her parents had no idea her daughter was married. she had no support from any family member. where were from interacial marriage dont happen. she honestly was scared if her dad found out that his week heart would fail and that it would kill him. she honestly thought she would give her dad a heart attack so she went 6 years without them knowing. talk about juggling your life, misery, and depression. she finally listed to me and got a divorce, then he did some crazy things, and she had to get help from family b/c he was getting dangerous. thank God she is away from him now but talk about 7 years of misery, which started out, with nothing but joy and happiness. gals ask your man what is the number 1 goal or what does he want for himself. me being christian, i would hope the answer would be, to make it through this life on earth with my spouse and help her get into heaven with me, b/c eternity is the ultimate goal. if he gives you a answer like, to have a nice job and a big house with many cars? gals that sounds great but it sounds to me your a pawn to his dream, dont be fooled like my good friend please.

God bless i hope this helps 1 person
chris

thanks Chris I totally understand. I have asked my husband those hard questions and he said he only wants to live his life with me forever til God takes us home. He also said if I should go home before he does he will follow shortly after cause he knows he can't live without me. He really don't have much interest in coming to the states but is coming cause of me and my family and would be fine with me moving to Ghana if that is what it will take for us to be together forever. He don't worship the ground I walk on he treats me with love care and respect as I do him. So in my case he hasn't changed a bit and is so full of faith and God and has helped me out in that area of my life as well. Thanks for your post...Sorry for your friend hope she is healing.. God Bless.

Girl, you should go since you have the flexibility and finances to do so! What a wonderful experience it would be for you and him! I haven't seen my husband since March 2007 and his interview date in Lagos is March 10, 2008. If I had the flexibility and finances, I would have done it! I thought if u went to the consolate with the NOA2 and that NVC number, that u could pick up the packets. Wondering why he had to go 3 times. Plus they are supposed to send u an email when the case has been tranferred from NVC..right? Now im so confused... wacko.gif Did ur husband have both notices (NOA2 and NVC email) with him when he went the first 2 times?

This is sooooooooooooooo frustrating helpsmilie.gif

The first time my husband went to the embassy, it was in the afternoon. They told him it was too late. The second time, he was there at 6:30 a.m. The guards were telling people to get their papers out and many people were ignoring what the guards told them. He said there were about 50+ people in line and about 10 including himself had gotten there at 6:30 a.m. After a few hours of waiting, they told them all to go home . . . that they got there too late. My husband was pretty upset about it. So he asked what time he should be there on the 27th and they told him 7 a.m. and he told them he will be there at 6:30 a.m. like he was that time and to remember his face. LOL. My husband had both notices when he went each time. We never received an e-mail from the NVC. Yes, you can pick up your packets but first you have to get past the line and into the cosolate to speak to someone.

Thanks for the info... smile.gif I know its crazy at the consolate! We went there when I was in Lagos the last time, just to ask questions, and it was a nightmare! Thats why Im hoping my husband only has to go once!

I also hope he only has to go once to get the information. Just tell him to go early when he goes and do whatever the guards tell him to do and pray the others do the same. My husband did not have to travel far to the embassy, but he said there were others who did. He was concerned about some older ladies who were what appeared to be about 80 yrs old . . . they too had to stand in line and were sent home. Really, there is no excuse the way they can treat people there at the consolate. It upsets me that our tax dollars pay those people. Don't you just love to see our tax dollars at work?! blink.gif I thank God that my husband was able to get the information and interview date. I can hardly wait until he steps off that plane here in Kentucky. Wooo hooo!

I noticed on ur timeline that it took almost a month before u go the NVC#...Were u calling everyday? I am so obsessed with this!!! LOL Don't wanna waste a day! Am just so amazed at the person i have turned into during this process! wacko.gif Can u imagine the feeling when we see our hubbys again at the airport! OMG!!! Yes, it did take almost a month to get to the NVC. I called on Tuesdays and Fridays . . . LOL. I haven't gotten obsessed with this or I would not be able to function. I don't want to waste a day either, but this is a very long process and I try to keep everything in perspective. I told my husband when he arrives, I am not sure we will be able to make it straight home. We have a SUV and the seats fold down, but who has time for that, right? Of course, I am just joking! innocent.gif Thank God our home is only about 2 miles from the airport. I know we will just want to hold onto each other and not let go!

I agree as well, and never fail to enjoy the legendary hospitality of any country in Eastern Europe that I have visited. Normally my SO negotiates everything in advance of the vendor hearing my voice. Even when my friend's wife had a family friend take us from Odessa to Kherson - he charged me about double the going rate. Vita was furious. Another example of the price going up when an American is involved. I was able to tell my friends and SO that "this is often what it is like for Americans who travel". So maybe the lack of flexible prices for everything is our version of hospitality, or at least as close as we can come laughing.gif Otherwise, Eastern Europe really puts us to shame in that regard.

I have a few people over there that I yalk to when we are there and it is kind of funny to watch. One is the husband of a friend of my wifes. He speaks/understand almost no English, but yet we 'talk' for hours, him in Russian and me in English. A lot of hand signals with an occasional "Honey come help". A lot of Americans have no patience for it, Ukrainians seem to be very interested in hearing what you have to say.

Just my humble opinion...

My point exactly. I went back and read your post about what happened. When it was time to come here my wife started to drag her feet a little. I had already come back and I basically told her to just get to the airport. It was fine. Every now and then she gets 'home sick' and gets the feelings about having to help everyone at 'home'. A trip back cures that for awhile. We will always help her parents, when we can. But the trip last month was an eye opener as far as the rest of her family was concerned. There was some of the expectations of giving that we just didn't have this time. Except her parents the others became a little distant. Her parents would accept very little, they just wanted to see us. Her friends were also great.

If you get the language down, you can have a blast there with or without anyone from here. You already have a head start on the cultural differences.

Sounds like you know from experience. Interesting, because I am taking a Russian class at night now, and finding it tough to keep up. My fiance' tells me not to worry, because she will help me practice every day soon. I just wonder how people are perceived in Ukraine as they struggle to communicate in Russian or Ukrainian. I have been playing at this for years (Rosetta Stone, tutors, etc.) but need something a little more intense to make it stick. I ask the question because Americans can be fairly cold towards some one who doesn't speak English well. Ukrainians seem to be much more tolerant - as are europeans generally. Your thoughts?

Brad,

I just checked on the Hotel Rus. A single room runs between $145 and $165 (702 to 806 hrivna) a night. Although, I would recommend you have her call to check. I have seen hotels that have one rate for foreigners and another for domestic visitors.

We are in Odessa now, but I passed the info. along to Vika. I will also take down the apartment/driver numbers above. We tend to split our time between hotels and flat rentals, so the information is appreciated. I like hotels because generally I have found fewer problems with the amenities. Right now we are staying at Odessa Executive Suites, and having a typical experience in Ukraine. Nice place, great location, but fixtures that don't always work. Our TV shorted out two days ago, but hey, I didn't come all this way to watch tv anyhow.

Cheers

I would definitely shop around. Apartments are getting more expensive in Kyiv and landlords can be quite troublesome. I know of some landlords that want to hold a passport until the tenant vacates and pays all rent, so be sure to ask about this up front. Obviously she will not want to give her international passport since she's hoping for a visa to be placed inside. If you want to make her feel really good, I can recommend the Hotel Rus. It is in the center of the city with pretty good service. It is a favorite of many foreign visitors.

What is the cost? Come to think, I can probably figure that out myself. Thanks for the recommendation.

Brad, I am still cussing at you for being in Ukraine. JK. I will be there in three short weeks for interview. I was in Louisville last week. They missed you. I would like to one day visit Odessa, but I think Crimea will be before that. All depends on what Iuliia wants to do. In less than a month, she will be here. Besides the accomadations, and who you were with, how is Odessa? Review?

I like Odessa in small increments because of the conveniences available. It is tourist friendly, but I do start to feel like a bankomat with feet after a few days. Prices are definitely higher than in the interior, and the beach and seaside generally are not really like what you see in a resort area elsewhere. We visited some clubs/restaurants, listened to jazz guitar, snarfed big breakfasts at Mic's (the Irish pub with the Scottish highlander and bagpipes in its adds), and walked the Potemkin steps to the sea. Definitely worth a few days just to experience it.

A quick note about accomodation alternatives in Odessa. Vika and I stayed at Odessa Executive Suites Look Here. These are apartments, but the rental office also functions like a hotel front desk in some ways. It is an American owned company, and the owner is on the premises daily. Most of the staff speaks English, and the office staff is very fluent. Transport to and from the airport is free, and there is a Vonage line to America in the office that any one can use to call the States free of charge. Prices range from $55 to around $100 per day - a good value compared to the hotels in the area (especially in tourist season). The building where we stayed was ten feet from the pedestrian part of Dorobasovkaya street. There is an internet connection in every room.

All in all, this is the best short stay accomodation model I have found in Eastern Europe. Guests seemed to be a fair mix of business people, holiday goers, and point-and-click or introduction agency clients. Although our tv blew out, and it took two days to replace, otherwise all the amenities and fixtures worked well - and all the time. I would recommend OES to any traveler who is even passing through Odessa.

Thanks a lot for everyone who responded!!!! It helped a lot to see the possible prospective in our estimates!
Will stick to the plan of waiting for his passport with visa in Kiev hoping that it could save couple of days rather then returning back to Odessa and wait for it there. You would not believe but in our particular situation every day is counted...I know a bit ricky...but that second time around in that the same process the hardest part...
Thanks again and good luck everyone!

What do you mean by "second time around"

Brad, "second time around" means that we've applied for K1 and got it a year ago, he came here, we've got married. applied for AOS, but then emergency happened to his son in Ukraine , he needed to return urgently, before Advance Parole doc arrived. He took care of everything, but he could not just return back, it considered that he abandoned his status, and K1 visa-just one time entry. So we've started everything over again. This time applied for CR1 visa(since we were already married). And he just waited in limbo in Odessa until everything got approved again. Very hard time... Without his place to live, without job, registration (propiska).. Finally it's getting to the end. He successfully passed his interview today , and now waiting for passport with visa in Kiev. We just took that risk. Will see how it will turn out....

Sorry to hear about all that. Thanks also for pointing up probably one of the biggest flaws in the system. The only possible solution I have read here is early parole - and how would you know in advance that you would need it? Any way, it looks like you are back on track now - I wish you both the best of luck.

My fiance' is from Kherson, and we want to leave Kiev immediately after the interview also, if her visa is granted. I have read other posts here that say the delivery service will allow you to pick up at the office in Kiev, or have the passport/visa delivered to an address in Kiev if you want. You can apparently put any address on the deliver address. Good Luck!

Brad,

I read your post about airline tickets before this one. If you have the NOA2, then you might find you can schedule an appointment in November or early December. When we got the NOA2 three years ago the NVC worked very quickly. The entire file went from the CSC to NVC and on to Kyiv in just about a week. So, when you get the notice from NVC, plan on writing the embassy in Kyiv about her appointment. You might be able to get it all completed before our Christmas. That could significantly change your plans. Although, you might just want to fly there for Orthodox5 Christmas and let her spend a last Christmas with the family for a while, then fly to America for a new beginning.

Congratulations. Your timeline is almost identical to our, just three years later. I remember how excited we both were, so I know you have some great times coming. Next Monday, the 17th it will be three years that Lena has been here.

I was hoping to work the interview into my already-laid plans, but it looks like that is an outside bet at best. Viktoria says that she is ready to leave "fast or slow" depending on what works out. We are both eager to get to some semblance of a normal life, and I congratulate you as well - three happy years is a great accomplishment!

Well, they did and are still doing the same thing to us, but at least you know you are approved.

Yeah - I thought they wanded the file every time it was worked on or moved. You would think that approval would show on the system days before a snail mail delivery. What's up with that?
