CanadaTravelling into Canada
Hey everyone,

Now that I have my 2 yr permanent resident card, what documents do I need to bring to travel between Canada and the States?

The last time I travelled, I brought my advance parole documents. Are these still needed now that I have my perm resident card?

Also, the last time I travelled, I got pulled into secondary while they processed my advance parole. What can expect this time? Will it be a smoother crossing?

hmmm... now I'm really confused. When I collected EI, it was based on the fact that I was living in the US on a K1 Visa, like I've seen many other posters on here do. There was nothing secretive about that when I applied for EI... the benefits people were aware I had moved to the states, so I should think they would have taken out more taxes based on that already.

Oh... maybe I just need to call CRA... good times

Thanks Trailmix!! Ok, now what if I recieved EI benefits for the first few months of 2008 while I lived in the US, what happens there?

Also, my accountant advised me to state that I moved to the US on Jan. 1st, 2008, to keep everything clean for "tax purposes". If I do this, how does that affect refunds and such? And can I still complete that form as a correction if the return was for 2007, but I say I ceased to become a resident as of the first of 2008?

Is your head spinning yet? whistling.gif

Ok, I'm opening this one back up with a new question...

I moved to the US Dec. 4th, 2007.

When my accountant filed my taxes for that year, he did not fill in the info that I was no longer living in Canada, and I did not know any better to ask him about it. When my return came back, he told me to fill out form NR 73.

It seems the majority of people on here are against filling out the form unless CRA asks for it, but these same people also seemed to fill out their last tax return properly blush.gif

So now what do I do?

I don't want to NOT notify anybody, but I'm sure if filling out form NR 73 is the best route either.

Please help!!

Are there any 10-10 numbers that work from the cell phone, or are they just good for land lines?

Hey folks,

How often are EI payments generated? Weekly, bi-weekly?

Also, if they payments are going directly into my account, how can I request a copy of a statement?

Thanks!

Hello,

I just recieved my first set of report cards. There are two of them, for different date periods.

I also recieved 5 little sheets, exactly the same, that have questions like "Dates worked during the week" "Gross amount earned". The sheets are all for the same time period. Do I send back all 5, even though they are the same, or does EI make a habit of just sending extra's in case I need them?

Thanks!

How do you fill out question 4 on the back of the report cards?

Were you ready, willing and capable of working each day? If "no" give date(s) and reason(s) below. Complete E on side 2 if applicable.

I'm ready willing and capable, but not allowed wink.gif

Does anyone have a response for this question above?

I also just recieved my first set of report cards, and I'm not sure how to answer this question.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionTransfered from Texas to Vermont?
I have high hopes for a fast response from VSC...from my (historical) perspective, they always seemed to have it together more than the others.

I can understand the anxiety...you will get the NOA! Removal of conditions is forthcoming...keep us posted.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionTransfered from Texas to Vermont?
Our 751 packet was sent to TSC and signed for on 12/16. However, today we received the NOA 1 with a Vermont mailing address on the bottom. Looks as though we were transfered not to CSC but to VSC! I hope VSC is as fast now as they were back in 2004 we I watched all of the 129s flying through the system! Not that it really matters much.

Congratulations to everyone getting approved wherever you file! Happy New Year.

Mike and Luciene

I just noticed...TSC is still our center of record for filing; however, we now live in Kentucky. Not New Mexico. I guess I should update my information. Gosh, it's been a while since I've been to VJ.

Fried pickles are yummy, but they are kind of common.

I like mayonaise or cream cheese in spaghetti sauce.

And a favorite of mine from childhood is a tomato sandwich-that's alot better than the onion sandwiches that my mom used to eat.

Yes, this is making me hungry now too. biggrin.gif

CanadaWomens Shelter
Hello all. My name is Brad and my fiance lives in Toronto. We have just started this process and her family is being very mentally and physically abusive and I am in the process of trying to find her a place to live. She has never had a job and just recently moved to Canada so she isn't very familiar with the area. I am saving up money to help her get an apartment but until then I'm trying to find out information about shelters or anything else she can use if something bad happens. She has no one in Canada but her family and they are the ones putting her health at risk. Please if you can help it would be greatly appreciated

also could getting a restraining order on her father keep him from being able to enter the country. he comes and goes quite often and a few weeks ago when he was in he threatened her with death after he saw that she wouldn't do what he said. now he's coming back. her mother and brother have been doing the same type of things to her. screaming at her. threatening to kick her out. throwing food in her face. pushing her, punching holes in her walls, etc. they told her that they aren't afraid of the police either and they will do whatever they want. i'm hoping this will keep her dad from coming back. he is the MOST dangerous one. any help will do guys. thank you

theres actually nothing strange about it at all. her family is iranian and they are completely against the two of us being together. i am not up there currently because i don't make a whole lot of money so i have to stay here at work and make the money for her until she gets a job. do you think she is using me or something? she's not. i'm here because i have to work. not because i want to work. it's because i have to in order to be able to send her what i have. there are lots of apartments that i've found between 300-400. even a roach dive is better than an abusive household. i'd do anything in the world to be able to put her somewhere nice but safe is the most important thing because it's only a matter of time until she is here with me. her father has told her that he would kill her so i'm getting her out. she is a full time student so she hasn't been working. i'd rather her stay in school and only work part time. so it is hard for her to find something at the moment. mostly because we are dealign with counsellors and the police. plus when she is home she has to act like she is asleep or her family will yell and threaten her. she only has a certain time in the day when she can make progress on her own. she has class all day and has to be home at a certain time. she is 21 but her family treats her as if she's 10. so of all the people who took the time to say how strange this situation sounds if you can respond back with something that might actually help it would be greatly appreciated. thanks

i haven't thought about a hostel. i will look into that. i wonder what the price is monthly?

it's so crazy that you guys think that i haven't been right in the middle of this the whole time. how close are you to your fiances? if they were going through something difficult wouldn't you be a part of it? would you question the person you have decided to marry?

she has no friends in toronto because she hasn't lived there long. she moved from iran to toronto about 9 months ago. all her friends are iranian. they took the side of her family and ditched her.

i hope this helps guys. thanks

my fiance is soon to be leaving her home due to domestic issues that are being brought on by her family. she currently lives in Toronto. does anybody know of any rooms for rent or anything of that sort? she doesn't have a job at the moment so i'll be sending her all that i can. i can afford 300-500 but we are definately trying to stay around 300 just to make sure we can afford it. i've found a site called kijiji but if anyone can give me an idea of any other sites or places in particular that are open i'd be greatly appreciative, so would ellie! thanks guys you are always so much help!

CanadaCollecting child benefits while filing paperwork
Ok i am in the USA and plan not to leave until after I've gotten a response from filing all the necessary forms. I was told to file forms I-485, I-130 and I-765. I have not done that yet. I guess until I have completed the paper work I am still considered a visitor. I just figured it would still be ok to collect GST and child tax benefit until I am granted permanent residency here in the USA.

US Citizenship General Discussionis this correct
You can file for citizenship one of two ways.
1. Based upon marriage to a US citizen. You must be an LPR for at least three years AND married to the same USC for three years of your LPR status.
OR
2. You can file for citizenship after being an LPR for five years, your marriage status and length are not relevant.
Of course there are other requirements but this is the one you are addressing.

US Citizenship General Discussionwhen to file Citizenhip

The children can apply for citizenship 90 days prior to their five years as an LPR. There are residency requirements for them to meet prior to filing for Citizenship. You really need to look into those as you are planning on them moving to the Philippines for the next four or five years.

US Citizenship General DiscussionA real mess for citizenship, married before divorce not final

The problem is she was never entitled to obtain a green card. She obtained it through marriage to a USC but she was never legally married to him. Thus she was not entitled to the green card. I would suggest she just accept her fate, be happy she still has the green card, and forget about ever becoming a citizen. Chances of a U visa are no existant unless she can prove she assisted in the criminal prosecution of the person.

US Citizenship General DiscussionOut of State Driver's Licence at Interview

1. I don't think it will be an issue, I don't remember them even asking for a DL when my hubby went.

2. Let me scare you.  In Kentucky (and maybe in your state) it is a Class A Misdemeanor to not update your address on your driver's license within 10 days of moving. If pulled over or for any other reason, it is discovered you have not done so they can arrest you and you could spend up to one year in jail.

Nope, you have to have been married to the same USC for three years and also an LPR for three years.

Three years from when she first became an LPR, conditional or not. It should state on her card LPR since. You can file 90 days prior to the three year mark and not one day sooner.

US Citizenship General DiscussionA bizarre situation ever happened before.

The problem is by filing head of household they are saying they are the only adult who is taking care of dependents....meaning there is only one capable adult in the household (I say it this way because an elderly dementia person (for example) can be considered a dependent). By filing head of household the person is saying they did not live together. It is also an incorrect way to file taxes and could be construed as tax fraud if it is not correct.

Having been a tax preparer previously I have seen people try to do this. They would have a house with two entrances and get the post office to give the same address an A and B designation (A for one door, B for the other) so it appeared to be a multifamily home when in reality it was one house. Then both of them would file head of household and claim some of the children even though they lived in a single family residence. It can be a significant boost to your refund amount filing head of household.

belinda63FemaleIran2014-02-28 08:36:00
US Citizenship General DiscussionA bizarre situation ever happened before.

You need to file an amended tax return. If you are married you can't have one person file as head of household and the other file as married/separate. You can either file married/joint or each of you file married/separate. Sounds like you were (knowingly or not) trying to game the system and get a bigger refund.

At least they didn't get you for public indecency. Anyone see that movie "terrible bosses" or something like that where the guy is a life-long sex offender registry person because he peed (at night) across the street from a school?

If you don't have any luck with the local federal court house try the FBI or US Marshall's Office.
