CanadaAdjustment of Status Process
Thanks Emancipation, that is helpful.

And Jasman, I have not applied for SSN yet. From the tips on this website, I am going to wait 2 weeks, to ensure that I am in the system. I'll also apply after I get married I think, so that I don't have to worry about changing my name later.

CanadaAdjustment of Status Process
Hi folks,

As you know from my other post, I am finally here in the US!! In a couple weeks we will be getting married, and then we will begin part 2 of this immigration process.

I have been reading the Guides section in VJ about AOS, and the FAQ's. Is all the info I need here, or does anyone have any tips on what I should be doing now to prepare for when I adjust?

It seems pretty straightforward, but I have seen a lot of confusion around this process.

My main question is about the vaccination record. Do I have to find a doctor here to provide a new one for my AOS, or can I use the sheet that the Panel Physician gave me when I did my medical in Canada? I think I've read some posts where some people have gone through a doctor in Texas via fax, and was able to get all the paperwork they needed.

Other than getting the necessary forms off VJ, what government websites also have these forms?

Any help to avoid headaches down the road, for myself and anyone else beginning this process is much appreciated!

CanadaAmbassador Bridge POE review
I think the first officer was trying to "test" me, to make sure that I wasn't lying.

And the cellphones in the car thing was kinda like the consulate. Since cellphones and remote key locks can activate bombs, we had to leave them in the car. The rolled down window was to ensure we didn't lock ourselves out of the car, even though my brother kept telling the guy that the car won't lock if it detects keys inside haha.

CanadaAmbassador Bridge POE review
Hey folks,

It's been awhile since I've been able to post, thanks to all the hecticness of preparing for my move and such. But, I'm happy to report that I am finally at home with my fiance!!!

Just wanted to give a very quick review of my poe crossing through via the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor/Detroit.

When I pulled up with my brother, the officer asked all kinds of questions like "Where you are you going to live?", "What exit are you meeting your fiance at?" (My brother was taking me to Detroit, and then I was transferring vehicles). "What interstate am I taking home?". He also wanted to know if I had all my pets rabies documents in order and if I had made a list of all the possessions in my brothers car, which I didn't. He then directed us to secondary, where we were met by two other officers, who told us to leave the keys in the car, the windows down and our cell phones in the car, and then we went inside.

All in all, we were in the office for no more than half an hour. The guy took my sealed envelope and both my passport and my brothers. Then we sat down for about 15 min. After that, he called us back up, told me to pay a fee of $6.00 USD, and gave me my I-94. Then the officer standing next to him proceded to tell me some incorrect info, such as I could travel out of the States until I started the AOS process, and he told me that I couldn't get my SSN until I got my EAD, which is not true. I just smiled and nodded.

They also would not issue me an EAD at the border, which didn't surprise me.

And then my brother and I were on our way. That's it, that's all. No additional fingerprinting or "mugshots", no interrogation. It was pretty easy.

CanadaAbout to send Packet 3 back to Montreal
I hope I am not adding to the confusion here... but I did send my DS-156k back with my packet 3, and when I got to my interview, they had it in front of them, ready to be signed. I did bring a duplicate copy with me, though, just in case. Because like everyone else, the wording on the packet 3 was very confusing.

CanadaApplying for Advance Parole
Hey everyone,

I'm a little confused about the advance parole application.

How do I specify my travel dates if I have none? (I simply want the permission, in case I have a need to travel before receiving green card).

Also, what can I say in the letter where I explain what circumstances warrant issue of advance parole? Is it enough for me to say that I just want the ability to travel to Canada while waiting for Green Card, in the event of a family emergency? Or do they need something more specific?

Is this document typically approved?

Any help anyone can provide is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks folks for the tips.

I guess I'll use my married name, and just send my passport ID page with my maiden name.

CanadaWhat name to use on Advance Parole form?
Hello,

I am still completing the all forms for Adjustment of Status, including the Advance Parole.

I have used my married name on all forms.

The photo ID that I need to send along with my advance parole application contains my maiden name. Which name should I use, if all my other forms have my married name?

CanadaWhat the heck did they do to the Heinz Ketchup???
haha... I've noticed there are quite a few things here that taste a little different than the Canadian versions.

Such as....

Doritos - saltier in US
Kit-Kat's - more sweet in US
Kraft Dinner (the US version tastes really artificial. Yes, even more so than the Canadian version!)
Cheese - all cheese here tastes like cheese whiz

hmmm... that's all I can think of right now. And the US packaging is also different on a lot of the same items we have in Canada. So weird.

My fiance always looks at me weird when I tell him that something doesn't taste like it does in Canada. He thinks I'm making it up haha.

And while we are talking about food, why is produce so dang expensive? In Canada, all the produce I bought always said "product of USA", so I assumed it would cheaper here, but oh no, that would just make sense wouldn't it?

CanadaTo fill out NR73 or not to fill out...
hmm... ok, I just called Revenue Canada, and they informed me that because of my various ties still with Canada, that it is best to fill out the NR73 form, and take it from there. I have seen others comment on here that they wouldn't do it unless asked for in writing. What is wrong with filling out this form?

If I don't fill out this form, what happens next year at tax time? Do I end up having to file in both Canada and the States?
MandEFemaleCanada2008-03-17 13:34:00
CanadaTo fill out NR73 or not to fill out...
Hey everyone.

I'll try to make this short...

I moved out of Canada at the beginning of Dec. 2007.

My mom has taken all my 2007 tax stuff to the accountant, and he informed her that he will process my taxes for 2007, but I need to fill out form NR73, so that moving forward, all my taxes are filed in the States. He said that if I don't, I could still be liable to pay taxes in Canada.

The only ties I have to Canada is a bank account and a student loan and a credit line. The bank account is open to cover the loan fee's.

I have a car registered in my name, but my brother is driving it.

I am also receiving EI until I can find a job.

Do I go ahead and fill out this form NR73, or not. If I do, what happens? If I don't, what happens?

Anyone else in a similar situation?

Thanks!!!

CanadaTraveling into Canada with Advance Parole document...
Hi everyone,

I am finally coming home to Canada for the first time since moving to the States kicking.gif

I will be traveling with my 512 Advance Parole document (2 pages). In addition, I'll have my passport with K-1 visa inside and my marriage certificate to show my name change.

Other then these travel documents, is there anything else I need to bring that the border agent may ask for?

Also, how and when do I use my advance parole documents? Do I only offer them if they are asked for? Or do I present them with my passport when I drive up to the booth?

Any help you folks can provide is greatly appreciated!

steps for transferring FROM Canada to USA acct:

1)log on
2) Under BASIC TRADE , click on ENTER A BASIC TRADE

steps 3-5 on same page

3) Third party NO
4) under SELLING CURRENCY, put in the amount CANADIAN you will be transferring and under what type of currency choose Canadian
5) Under Buying Currency leave the 1st space blank and under currency you want to buy from Vantage, choose USD,then click NEXT

6) Now your picking your transfer method, choose EFT for both (its free) then NEXT

7)Now your picking ur financial institutions! 1st one will be ur Cdn bank, second pul down menu is ur USA bank. They should be listed there already if it is properly set up, click on NEXT

8)Now to the exciting page!!! This is where u see the rate they will be giving you. And there is a REFRESH button just below that rate! U can keep hitting refresh and hope it gets better, it may a tad, or it may not. At this time you can confirm the trade OR CANCEL it!! Ur not stuck to the trade UNTIL you confirm it!! As of 2023 Sunday Custom house would give me $98.59 usd for $100 cdn.

As well you can send money from ur USA acct to Canada. One just has to re-register ur accounts!! This time you do it all online (not mailing.faxing in) takes only a few minutes!!

As well the staff at Customhouse are very friendly and more than happy to walk you through the steps.

When I first set-up Custom House, I set it up to transfer funds from US to Canada. Now I want to transfer funds from Canada to US, but it is asking me to fax in a signed sheet for confirmation. I thought I didn't have to do this once my first account was set-up. Have I done something wrong?

Hello,

I've heard of some people using Custom House to transfer money between US accounts and Canadian accounts. Like many people, I'll be moving the States with Canadian loans that will still need to be taken care of.

When I set up Custom House, do I use my US address and info? Also, what credit references are they looking for? I have no idea how to fill in that section huh.gif

From what I've gathered from reviews on here, your interview time has no bearing on when you actually have your interview. That it's more or less first-come, first-served.

hmmm, I was wondering this myself. Because our interview is at 9am, can we still show up at 7:45, or will they keep us outside till it's closer to our interview time? If I can get my interview over with early enough, I plan to drive back home (8hrs), otherwise I'll have to stay another night in Montreal.

FREAKIN' EH!!! I HAVE AN INTERVIEW NOVEMBER 9TH, 9AM!!! kicking.gif kicking.gif blink.gif ohmy.gif kicking.gif

After seeing Lona's post that she had an interview, I thought I would email Montreal, asking if they had a date for me yet. I never did expect a response. 20 minutes later, they replied with a "yes, your interview is Nov. 9th, 9am. A letter was mailed to you 2 days ago.".

Needless to say, I spent the rest of my Friday night stunned. I couldn't function, and I'm still wiping drool from my chin.

I know there are people on here who sent their packets back way before me. I say keep emailing Montreal. When I emailed them, I said "I understand that there are people who have sent Packet 3's back for K-1 visas in July, and have been notified of an interview. Could you tell me if I also have an interview?".

I've got my fingers crossed for all of you!! Maybe we'll all see each other in Montreal in November.

shew... now that I have an interview, there is a whole new list of worries... like what if they don't approve me?! sad.gif

I know I know!! I was looking at your timeline and thinking you sent your packet back a month before me, but you actually sent it back just a couple days before me!! That's crazy. There are still people who sent their packet back in June and haven't heard anything about an interview. I have no idea how Montreal is scheduling their interview, unless you all have interveiws in November!!??

Hi Amanda,

Perhaps you can write them back, letting them know that you know of someone who sent in their packet 2 weeks after you with a date, and that you believe your file has been overlooked unfairly. I know it has worked for others in the past.

CanadaDealing with home sickness...
wow, I'm astounded at the number of replies!! I forgot how much fun posting in the Canadian forum can be smile.gif

Thanks everyone for sharing your tips and thoughts and experiences.

Like most people, I made the assumption upon moving here that things were going to be "just like Canada". And in some respects they are, but in so many deeper aspects, they aren't. I also think my biggest downfall is that I go around my new city, trying to find things/places/events that are the same as what I had in Canada, and when I can't find those things, it really makes me miss home. I've recently been on the search for good hiking trails (in Waterloo, Ontario, I was surrounded by peaceful and secluded hiking trails that I could walk my dogs). I can't find that here. In fact, most hiking trails in Kentucky are labeled as "preseverations" and dogs aren't even permitted!!! mad.gif

I'm a big outdoor person, and to find that same access to nature here has been tough, and has left me missing home in a big way.

I miss a lot of the food, too, but my husband and I get creative and we try to make a lot at home, like our own poutine.

Of course, I miss the obvious, like healthcare and our liberal culture. People here like to think they are liberal, but they really aren't. And the segregation between cultures makes me sad. I miss the multi-culturalism of Canada.

But being with my husband is certainly heavenly. I only have to remember what life was like a few months ago, stressing about getting a K-1 visa approved, and I feel blessed that we are finally together.

I used to take comfort in knowing that a visit back to Canada (and my mom's), was only a 9 hr drive away. But with the rising costs of gas, that road trip is no longer economical, therefore the trips will be fewer and farther between.

If there are any Canadians in Kentucky (or Cincinnati), give me shout. I would love to hook up smile.gif

CanadaDealing with home sickness...
Ok, so I moved to Kentucky about 6 months ago, and I'm feeling the home sickness. I've been reading through the forums here from other people who were also feeling home sick, and I think it's only added to my melancholy-ness.

I would love to hear from other Canadians who have moved to the States. Please share your stories on how you adjusted to your new home, or how you deal with the home sickness. Please, no venting here. I'm looking for inspiring stories on how my fellow Canadians overcome that horrible feeling.

CanadaCanadian TV in the US
Hey folks,

I've seen a few people mention on here that they have "Canadian satellite".

What is this?

Is there a service provider out there that carries Canadian programming?

Thanks!

CanadaThe other side of the fence...
I think it's funny that most people put down types of food they would miss. Including myself. I would miss mexican food and Chipotle and Qdoba. Cheap beer. Definitely the weather. KY has some nice weather, though I did miss the 5 inches of snow this winter that is typical in Ontario. Butterflies and fireflies seem more abundant here, which I love, but I hate that there are bigger and badder spiders. And ticks. I've never had to buy tick treatment for my dogs in Canada.

Of course, I would miss my husbands family, but right now I miss my family more.

Cheaper gas prices are nice, even though they are going up up up.

CanadaTravelling into Canada
Hey everyone,

Now that I have my 2 yr permanent resident card, what documents do I need to bring to travel between Canada and the States?

The last time I travelled, I brought my advance parole documents. Are these still needed now that I have my perm resident card?

Also, the last time I travelled, I got pulled into secondary while they processed my advance parole. What can expect this time? Will it be a smoother crossing?
