Philippines10 Reasons To Marry A Filpina
Wow it is hotter in IL than HI, damn global warming. My wife gets cold to when it is the upper 60'to mid 70's in the house or outside. Yet complains when it get in the 80's here. Also she said could never live in PI now coz it is too hot all the time. Also reason number 11, marry a Filipina so she has no culture shock to your in-laws.

Philippinesright timing
You should be very happy here in Hawaii. You have no problem getting Filipino food or meeting other Filipinos. Heck you might meet long lost relatives and friends here.

PhilippinesJessica can win!
Panalo si Jessica. Well something like that. She will win and become a star here I hope. Since she is not half white, she can not be an ABS-CBN star. Even Manny thinks she should win.

PhilippinesHow needy you are to have Filipino friends in your area?
My wife has some family here on Kauai, and a lot of distant relatives in Ewa Beach on Oahu. We have the baliktad problem here. We have no white friends, and most of our friends are Filipino. But when half the Island is Filipino, well it is hard not too have mostly Filipino friends. But I do see many yabang Filipinos here too. So I think it just helps to have friends. Even for me, was nice to meet people from Hawaii, when I was in the Mainland. Yet I had mostly Haole friends in the Mainland.

PhilippinesWhat race your baby is .. ?
It is common here to ask about race or ethnicity here in Hawaii. It is not considered rude to do so. But in the states it is rude I guess.

PhilippinesWhat race your baby is .. ?
I usually check Asian and White, or mixed, or the two or more races. I think all the new forms now give options for mixed race/multi ethnic people.

PhilippinesWoo hoo!!! NOA2
Congrats, and it is time to buy the rice cooker. Oh, you in Hawaii, so you have one already. Good luck, and your future wife should not have much culture shock in Hawaii. So what island do you live on?

PhilippinesHow Long are you Visiting Earth ?
It is common here in my part of the US to eat rice for breakfast. Of course spam, eggs and rice is more common than dried fish. In fact BK and Mcdo have rice on the breakfast menu.

PhilippinesUSA or PHL
My wife likes Kauai. Also when we retire it will 80% Filipino. The other thing is the services that are not provided in the province, ESP emergency services. Now we can live in Manila, but we like the rural life here with the stuff we can not get in the province.

Wow that is a cool site. They also ship to Hawaii, which makes sense, unlike the TFC store.

Philippineshospital and advanced terms
My wife was the same way when dealing with doctors here. However once she realized she could speak in Ilocano, then no problems here. I think most of her nurses was from the same province as her. I think Darren did bring up some good points, esp the communication part.

PhilippinesAmerican vs Filipino

How about grill dogs guts?
Yeah is seems eating dog is a tradition in some areas. My wife never likes the assumption that Filipinos eat dogs. To her dogs are pets. But I do know in other places, make your pet look too good and fattened up, you better keep it locked up tight or its going to end up on someone's dinner table.

It happened here. Two guys were convicted of stealing and eating their co-workers dog. I think the charges was theft and animal cruelty, since I think you can eat your own animals that you raise. These guys stole the co-workers dog, when he brought it to work. So the moral of the story is do not bring you fat black dog to work. Get direct tv.

I would not eat the loser from the chicken fights. To much drugs in and on the chicken, make it unsafe. The losers here tend to wander around the Walmart Costco and Burger King.

Our Walmart has Magnolia ube ice cream, but it sells out real fast. Also they sell Otep cookies.

PhilippinesPOE Experiences arriving in the U.S.
She should have no problems. My wife said it easy. Just have her befriend a Filipino person on the same flight. Also there should be plenty of Filipinos around to ask for help. She would just ask where to go for her connecting flight.

PhilippinesHow long has it been?
Wow I guess there is a lot more to Filipino food, than goat and pinakbit  . I wish you the best, and hope you will feel better. My wife did not have much homesickness here, but I was not away for over a year. And one year goes by pretty fast, and we will get to see some cute pics of your baby  .

Congrats and welcome to Hawaii, or should I say the fourth province of region 1. You should have no problems here in Hawaii with finding Filipino food or Filipinos.

PhilippinesRoosters in Talisay
We got plenty of roosters here. Most of them live outside Walmart and Burger King. Also plenty Filipinos here and they like to raise fighting chickens here.

PhilippinesEnglish Subtitles Needed for Filippino Soaps
Half the time they speak English. It also deep English, as I have to translate sometimes the English for my wife. Also the same words seem to pop a lot. Learned that papatayin kita is not greeting to use at burger king. But for the most part between the Tagalog words used often and English, I can get by. The problem here is that they speak ilocano, not much Tagalog.

She will have no problem and little culture shock going to Hawaii. You will have to go to Waipahu a lot to buy food and Chinatown for sure.

PhilippinesWhat's the reaction to your marriage
No problems here, in fact mixed race/ethnicity is very common here. Still there is some stares if the age gap is big or noticeable. Also Portland is pretty liberal, so should be no problems. In fact that area is nice and go beavs.

PhilippinesWife's diet changed since coming to US
I love bitter melon, ESP the wild small type. It grows wild here as most Filipino plants can be grown here. Her new favorite food is real corn beef, not the can corn beef. She also does not eat as much rice as me. There is a lot of fresh fish here too, but it is so expensive, over 20 dollars a pound for good ahi.

PhilippinesRed Horse beer in America
I can get it for 8 dollars a bottle at the grand Hyatt here. They have a high end Asian restaurant there which serves it. Funny that no store sells it here, since Ilocano is the main language here.

PhilippinesFavorite Filipino food/dishes

We missed that party, but always seems to be a Filipino party every weekend around here.

This was a birthday party my wife, daughter and I attended Friday nite, It was self- catered and the lechon was tasty.

If you lived here you'd never miss it, so much!

Yeah the superbowl party will be more extreme than that. I went to a party here, and a ####### fight was the halftime show. Only thing that is hard to get now is bittier melon. Maybe Maui has some, coz it seem it is too cold on Kauai now for it to grow.

Looks like someone is having pro bowl party on Maui.

PhilippinesFavorite Filipino food/dishes
I am hungry now. Well the wife cooked chicken papaya with mulungay leaves inside. She was going to cook pinakbet, but no bitter melon. I think it gets a little to cold for the fruits to grow in the winter. We just have vines without fruit. But in the summer, we get too much. I have seen the kangkong grow wild here, but my wife does not eat it. I think she could cook sinigang, since it has been so cold lately.

PhilippinesAge difference of fiance to fiancee?
It does not matter to me. The main thing is the couple is happy and in love. It is also nice when the couples family and close friends are happy for them.

PhilippinesDirect flight from Manila to JFK airport
Try Hawaiian Air. They have a direct flight from Manila to Honolulu. They also have a direct flight from Honolulu to New York City, but I forget which airport they fly into. Also she should have no problems navigating the Honolulu Airport, because there are plenty of Filipino people here in Hawaii to help her out if she gets lost.
Psoas10MalePhilippines2013-02-08 14:32:00
PhilippinesCheap Airfare!
I am not sure if PAl has their special immigrant one way fare to the US still yet. I just sent my wife the money, and she went to the local PAl office in the Laoag airport. She showed the manager the proof of immigration, and he booked the flight for her from Laoag to Manila and then to Honolulu. Of course I am not sure how much more it would cost to add another flight to the mainland though with another carrier.

I am sure they are Filipinos spread out over the DFW area. So Asian markets, catholic churches and the internet are good places to look.

PhilippinesJollibee

There is a jollibee in Hawaii. Look it up. I think it opened about 2years ago. My husband tried it once. And complained. Hehe!

Yeah there is one Waipahu and Ala Moana shopping center, which is on the island of Oahu. I live on Kauai, which is 200 dollar round trip away. But no worries we have some of the best home cooked Ilocano food.
Psoas10MalePhilippines2013-03-31 16:37:00
PhilippinesJollibee
I am surprised we do not have a Jolibee here. Filipinos make a near majority here. It cost about 400 dollars round trip, for me and wife to go to the nearest Jolibee.

PhilippinesCouples living in Hawaii.
Does she speak Ilocano? If she does than no problem getting a job. But still it depends on her job skills and education level. I live on Kauai, so I am not to sure about Oahu. It is about 800 to 1500 for rents here. If you don't mind living with other Filipinos, than it can be cheaper. It is just that things cost alot more here esp gas and electric. Also she may adapt easier to the Asian culture here than you, so that can be a concern as well.
Psoas10MalePhilippines2013-04-03 14:43:00
PhilippinesWould my fiancee's work status matter?
Japanese would be nice, for hotel jobs. But she can learn Ilocano, then many other jobs open up. Even speaking Tagalog is a big plus in Hawaii. Oahu job market is okay at about 4.5%, so finding any job should be easy. Just remember to take her to Waipahu to shop and eat at max and jolibee.
