This thread is another great example how every russian thread lives on the Tangent. Headline for the thread "It must be love, Russian style" Somehow has evolved into the quality of restroom facilities around the world and the use thereof.

I really missed it, it brings me great joy to see this kind of mottled thinking because it makes perfect sense to me.

The interesting thing about this thread is the OP is the one that took it off track. My original post was about slippers but then I posted about the toilets upon my return from Russia.

I agree, I like this mottled thinking

Heh! Ask a Russian doctor, it's probably good for your health. biggrin.gif

It is seldom just cold wa-wa; usually these toilets do not flush well, have previous debris, etc. Do as you wish, I will continue my Air to Surface Missile technique or just hold it till I get to mall or home

Place a carpet of toilet paper on the surface of the water and you do not have to worry about a splash, no matter the angle. Bu don't put too much paper, or else you will clog the system blush.gif

You have been gone from Russia to long; the Babuska will give you four little squares of paper for 20 rb. How can I make 4 square, approx 3"x3" into a carpet; besides, I am not staying in there any longer than absolutely necessary-the smell is so so so bad-even that roaches will not go in these bathrooms

The advantage of the squat-over-the-seat maneuver is that even the largest...er...solid bits...can't create enough splash-back to nail you in the pooter. This is important if you're prone to screaming like a girl when cold water hits you square in the pooter. Or...so I'm told.

I prefer the Scud missile approach, shot it at an angle so the splash black goes toward the rear wall. It takes a bit more effort to shoot with pressure a,,er,,solid bits but I find I prefer that to the splash back

Judging from my memories of the first Gulf War, I'd have thought the Scud Missile approach is where you miss the toilet completely. biggrin.gif

How was the trip?

Well, it ain't no Pitcairn Island blush.gif

It must be like childbirth, you forget the pain of the long trip and only remember the good times; I have been to Russia so many times they greet me by my first name at Passport Control. Did I mention the trip is long, but I digress. I recently relocated to Jacksonville, Florida from St. Petersburg, Florida. That added an extra stop to my trip and an extra pain in my rear because of the long trip. Oops, there it is again, a mention about the long trip.

I am a bit slap-happy. I arrive at 3 AM, got to bed at 4 AM and went to work at 7 AM; oh, that was after three days of travel with little sleep except on the airplanes. I was a real joy to be around today at work devil.gif After the first 10 phone calls and meetings, I plaster a sign on my back that read "The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has determined that the safe loading capacity on my "ash" is four people; you are number 8 in line, take a number!"

The trip was good; Natalya is a princess; her father and mom are the parents I wish I had; her sister and niece are sweet and her son-in-law seems okay.

I filed the K-1 today, off in FedEx to Vermont; with my request for waiver for previous K-1, divorce docs, evidence of meeting, check, etc.... Seems by the time lines that the wait will be approximately 7 to 8 months; what a joy crying.gif

What is the best advice I can give any newbies; learn enough Russian to avoid Taxis. At Sherometvo One the official taxi desk wanted 1500 rubies to go to Sherometvo Two, less than two miles. Oh, for you newbies, that is 50 bucks. WHAT? I had to get in my bag just to get a mirror to see if "STUPID" was tattooed on my forehead. 1500 rubies. Just a short walk out the terminal was a bus that carried 17 people for 60 rubies each from Sherometvo One to Sherometvo Two.

Second piece of advice, go to the toilet in your hotel or flat. In Sochi, it is 10-20 rubies for a toilet. Oh, but before you start saying that is only 33-67 cents; you need to experience this sort of toilet. The plastic box kind were so full they overflowed when you opened the door because of the flexion of the plastic-and I am not speaking of overflow of the blue tidy bowl type water used in American Port-a-lets. An Army NBC gas mask would not protect you from the horrid smells of this sort of box of horrors. Then there were the 20 rubies toilet rooms with the older babuska collecting money and giving you two squares of toilet paper for wiping. One there is no frickin toilet, only a couple formed pads in the base for your two feet and you hang it over the hole-and I am not speaking of hangin my 12 inches over the bowl but my buns. Just because you shelled out a couple extra rubies does not mean it is clean. I have been in autopsy's of 10 day old floaters that smelled better.

This is not a question I have ever been asked, not in my two marriages and not by any other FSU women. She wants to buy me slippers so I am accepted in her family home. I am so touched!

Time for me to weigh in here. I have been to Russia roughly 30 times in the past five years. The best site I have found for searching airfare prices is www.kayak.com; it is just a portal and sometimes the flights are sold out once you go to the member airline but it gives you an excellent feel for the options.

I have had tourist visas, business visas, multiple entry, etc. If you plan multiple trips, the business one year visa is the way to go; less hassle and less long term expense.

My last trip, I had a problem, first time, with my visa. I went through a broker and they put a Moscow hotel on my visa invitation and visa voucher. I spent my time in Sochi. When attempting to leave Sochi, the person in charge of allowing me past the security checkpoint flagged me for special treatment; you know, the single chair in a 12X12 room with a bright light on my face as they grilled me in Russian. Well I have been around the baseball diamond enough to act totally stupid. I know enough Russian to speak a tiny bit but I have found it best to act totally stupid, not hard for me. I repeated, I don't understand Russian, I do not speak Russian, etc. Never said a word of Russia other than "Da". They finally sent in a Russian with some command of English and he grilled me why my voucher said a Russia hotel but I stayed in Sochi. I explained I went through an agent and that is what they gave me. Soon, he passed me through.

Also, when in the company of a Russian official, never say you are visiting Russia for a bride, to visit your fiancee, for a MOB, etc. Some do not take to kindly to American (or any other countries men) coming to cherry pick there best single Russian women.

Do we really believe the Russians are that stupid to believe that Obama fixed anything between these two countries? I love it when the news said the two Presidents saw "eye to eye" on many issues but that Putin and Obama had major differences, duh

It is like to featherweights going up against one heavyweight. Sure, they will get in a couple pretty good swings but they do not have a prayer against the big guy. Don't kid yourselves, Putin has the final say in any treaties, togetherness, etc.

Trip over

5am-7am Jacksonville-Atlanta
9am-11am Atlanta-JFK
4pm-10am JFK-SVO (+1 day)
9pm-11pm Moscow-Sochi
11pm-4am Sochi-Anapa (taxi)

Return

6pm-8pm Sochi-Moscow
Noon-2:30 Moscow-JFK
6pm-8pm JFK-Atlanta
1130pm-1am Atlanta-Jacksonville (+1 day)

That is a lot of ash time!

Previous times when I went to Blagoveschensk, add 6.5 days on the train to this total, minus the trip to Sochi

How do you tell a woman she is wrong and get her to believe it?

So. If she's going to go through the roof if you don't notarize your translations, then hell, notarize the translations. I'm all about domestic harmony and picking my battles wisely, and to my mind this is a pretty small battle to win. So if you can't convince her, get 'em notarized and make her happy. Once you get to the AOS stage you'll be able to show her on a computer screen in front of both of you that such-and-such a thing is either necessary or not, and then it won't be such a big deal.

Why would you arrest someone for taking a picture of a bird, I could see if he was showing you the bird but not taking a picture of one.

He assumed I was a spy with a giant lens pointed at the AK factory so something; I did not ask questions. I know how to act like stupid American; American Embassy, American Embassy, American Embassy

When I got my call to American Embassy, they said, sorry Mon, you are on your own.

I may be a bit "dim" but I am not stupid. I never asked for a tour of the factory because this is the same city the militiza picked me up in the city park because I was photographing birds with a big camera lens. Granted, the lens was a 600mm f4 (about 2 feet long and about 12 inch diameter) but they detained me till they could confirm I was indeed a wildlife photographer working in Russia photographing birds.

Sure, I can see me on a tour of the AK factory; picked up in the park as a spy; dating a lady with son who works at AK factory; background as special forces in Army; .... I think I would still be living in a gulag in Russia! However, I did enjoy the cold of Siberia and Yakutia is not so bad is you like permafrost and -70, seas of bugs in the summer and ice almost year-around

The Jackdaw that I have just uploaded as my avatar was the same bird I was photographing at the time of my arrest
