I-864 joint sponsor concerns

Merhaba - I just want to chime in because we also had to have my parents sign on as joint sponsors for my husband when we were going through our visa process from Turkey. Because we lived and worked in Turkey, our income did not meet the requirements. It was a huge thing to ask of my parents, as it does obligate them financially. While your mother seems to be misinterpreting what that means (ie sending payment every month), it's still a huge commitment and does not end once your husband moves here. Since you are a graduate student, I would caution you to think about how you are going to be able to support yourself and your husband. How likely is it that your husband will be able to work in the US? Do you have a financial plan for yourselves? Do you have savings? Can you go to graduate school part-time and work to bring up your level of income?

I think pushbrk is asking good questions for you to think about. It IS a big thing to ask someone to do so you really need to make sure you have all your ducks in a row.

I-864 scares me to death!

Merhaba Becca,

Actually you DO have to send the I-864 forms with the I-130 application (when applying from within Turkey). If you
follow the instructions on the US Embassy website:

There is a checklist of all the documents you need. I think Turkey is a little different than other countries as you just
send *everything* together straight away. I also sent 2 I-864 forms (one for myself, one from my parents, who are
co-sponsoring my husband). We just organized everything in packets and labeled everything clearly so they would
understand what we were sending. I also sent a brief, detailed cover letter that listed what we were sending and
the order. I think I was probably a little OCD about the packet, but it worked out, so I can't complain!!!

As far a domicile, I have also been living in Turkey for quite some time (almost 4 years) but I have a current US
driver's license, bank accounts in the US, and I am in the process of finding a job in the US. This is the one point I
am a little nervous about, but I am hoping that at our interview, we will be able to explain our situation and that
it won't be a problem for them.

translations notarized?

We had ours notarized last year, but I believe there was something in the instructions that said it needed to be translated and notarized and also we needed a paper that said the translator (tercume) was certified to translate. Trying to get that last piece of info was like pulling teeth, but in the end they gave us a copy (I think they were afraid it would get out and circulated). I would just get it notarized as the Turkish bureaucratic process and the US visa process do not necessarily line up. Good luck!

Boyfriend in Turkey

Has your boyfriend ever traveled outside of Turkey before? If not, since he's a student and lives at home, I imagine it would be fairly difficult for him to get a visa to see you in the US. Not impossible, but he (and you) would need to prove very strong ties for him to return.

As for marriage, it takes a significant amount of time and money to go through the visa process, so you should really read through the forums and learn about the pros/cons of each visa. I was fortunate to be living in Turkey and when my husband and I applied for his visa, so we went through DCF (filed in Turkey in Ankara vs having to file in the US) and that is a much faster process. I had been living in Turkey for several years, so it's what made sense for us.

Hey there Flothera...age difference? me and Hamit are 7 years apart and they didn't even ask! I don't think it is much of an issue...I think the only time it becomes an issue or anything else for that matter is when the relationship isn't genuine and they will sniff that out correctly about 99% of the time...so no need to worry! Just be yourself, be honest and provide proof and oh yea, try to be there if possible!

Try to be there..? Oh, you mean the USC? %) %) I don't know. The age difference is 25 years; I'm 21, he's 46. Perhaps this fact will be all the more visible when/if he's there with me. I can only hope that it works out at this point... *sigh*

My wife said that at the interview the officer was mostly interested in our pictures together. I had sent along one that I took just before I got on the plane to leave her at the airport and we had tears on our cheeks. He said "What were you both so sad about?" She told him "We were sad because he was leaving and we didn't want to be apart." He said "Awwwwwwwwwwwwww..... approved!" There was no detailed interview for her or anything like that.

Congrats on your NOA2. You must be pretty excited by now. I also get the impression that most Turkish beneficiaries in this thread are male, but not so for me and my Turkish wife. Anyway, best of luck dealing with the consulate in Ankara and beyond. It will be a cinch.

Hello, people! Thought I'd say hi another Turkish k-1 filer here. I've had a look at the posts related to Turkey, and it seems like the Turkish beneficiary is usually male? o_O It's interesting reading the stories of those that have managed to go through with the process. Makes me think about potential problems with adjusting... Our process is in the NOA2 stage, we've just received approval on the 15th. Pretty quick. I can't help but expect a late RFE or something. Sure hope not... also pretty clueless about Packet 3, I think we'll end up waiting for the consulate to send us the list before starting to collect anything...

A March filer here as well, we sent the petition in on the 4th and... well... this baby arrived in my inbox this morning:

Current Status: Approval notice sent.

On April 14, 2010, we mailed you a notice that we have approved this I129F PETITION FOR FIANCE(E). Please follow any instructions on the notice. If you move before you receive the notice, call customer service at 1-800-375-5283.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was at work at the time, and thought that our case was most likely just "touched"... clicked on the e-mail, thinking "at least that's something" and... I was stuck for a good two minutes thinking if I'm hallucinating. Then my hands started shaking :| Our case being eeeever so slightly off the mill I thought we would take a lot longer than even the regular 3 months or so. Go California! Wow. This moves the case to a point a fair lot earlier than I thought, though, a little worried, but strangely happy at the same time.

Though being such a huge pessimist I can't help but think there might be an RFE hidden in there somewhere, or we'll totally fail to go through the NVC/consulate process, or, or, or... :X

Foreign letters

I'm sure this has been asked before, and I've come across the umlaut problem while searching, except I am still a little confused about the "Foreign name" option in the initial forms. My name does not use a significantly different alphabet as Russian or Chinese would, merely has Turkish letters such as "?". It does say that it should go exactly as it is on the passport, so me and my fiance have filled it out as that, but I wanted to ask for other people's experiences. I've heard of cases where the name ended up completely botched, hoping that's rare though...

Alright, I couldn't find a proper answer for this one. "Last occupation abroad if not shown above" - assuming that the abroad part means anywhere except the US for the fiance's form as well. I know it says "if not shown above" but should we still write it there, even if it's listed above? Or just N/A? Or nothing? And none of these occupations existed on paper - would get references, but legally, the fiance was never really employed, just freelancing. Should we list the jobs anyway?

Husband 's food and traditions.

My husband is Turkish he cleans, cooks, irons and does the dishes as much as I do. He never says anything about how I dress accept to compliment it if he likes it I don't often wear very short things as we live in Istanbul (my choice not his) but when we're in the states he dosen't have any issue with mini skirts or short shorts.

I know several Turkish men like your husband and they can have a difficult time adjusting to America and American women. I know you said he was traditional when you met him but he also has to realize that you're not I hope you guys can find some compromise.

A horrible employee requested a new invoice and that froze our account until TUESDAY! Im not happy...

Our fees are finally showing paid. Printing docs today and mailing them next day tomorrow hopefully we won't have to wait 20 business days again for them to enter them into the system. They must be horribly understaffed at the NVC

When I called the NVC to find out why the fees said not paid I was told it was because I used Chrome and not internet explorer. Don't you think that is something they might mention on the payment page? Oh well at least now it says In Process.

Candance as far as I know you go ahead and send the forms in by the time they reach the NVC your payment should have been processed thus saving a few days. Your husband should definetly send in his choice of agent as well. As soon as they approve that you can pay the IV application processing fees.

Does your status now show paid? What did the NVC have to say about it?

Checklist From NVC for Unobtainable Birth Certificate

So before I call the NVC today I wanted to get as much advise as possible.

My husband is a Turkish citzen who was born in France.
France does not issue birth certificates or any other official documents for persons who are not French citizens unless you go in person to the Paris office(not an option). This is information I recieved from the French embassy here in Turkey as well as online.
As my husband is a Turkish citizen I sent in the Turkish equivalent of a birth certificate

I just recieved a checklist from the NVC requesting my husbands original birth certificate.

When I call will I be able to resovle this over the phone or do I have to resubmit the Turkish birth certificate with a letter stating the fact that a French one is unobtainable?
