CanadaAny Canadians in Indianapolis?

No, I had NO idea of this. That's not good. Well thanks for letting me know that.

Did you get married in Indiana?

Yeah, we got married in Indiana (Marion County). We had a civil marriage in order to get the AOS started and then we'll have a church ceremony sometime in the summer. Indiana is pretty fast with marriage licenses and certificates (get it the same day you apply), so you should have no problem when you reach the AOS stage :)

CanadaAny Canadians in Indianapolis?

I am in Windsor, ON. I cross at the Ambassador Bridge always. It takes me about 4.5hrs, depending on traffic..

Oh, that makes it easier then. We could have taken Windsor, but my husband said to take Sarnia for variety.

Anyway, just so you know ahead of time, you're going to have to take the driver's exam again...Indiana laws. I'm trying to study for my driver's test now. I just hope that I get to keep my Canadian license.

Not yet, but working on it..:-)) I'm actually driving down there tonight, can't wait!!!!!!!

Where are you coming from? My husband and I drove about 9 or 10 hours in total from Toronto when we POE'd.

Good luck!

Hey everyone,

Just wondering if there are any Canadians out there currently in Indy :)

CanadaEPA letter for car
The CBP officers at the POE were supposed to give you a form (3 pages long) all filled out and you were to sign 3 copies (so in total 9 pages). You get to keep one copy and hand this to the DMV for the vehicle registration.

Also, they are making you wait 3 weeks for the plates?? We got ours right away.

Anyway, hope this helps.

CanadaCanadians feeling guilty about taking jobs away from Americans?

Oh, well that doesn't even make sense.

No it doesn't make sense at all. I'd initially stated that I came to the U.S. legally (married an American and waiting for a green card, etc.) and someone else sent back a message that coming here legally doesn't make it moral (that morally and legally are two different things in the U.S.).

I really don't know what's wrong with these people.
Tina&RolandFemaleCanada2010-02-15 13:48:00
CanadaCanadians feeling guilty about taking jobs away from Americans?

So they expressed that they were unhappy with you getting promoted because you are American?

I don't think the better applicant getting the job plays in to this really. I think we are talking about immigrants coming to the U.S. and stealing American jobs - whether you are not qualified, qualified or over qualified, whether your resume is outstanding or your first impression at an interview rocks - is really beside the point.

Well, the beef was that "foreign professionals were stealing jobs from "uneducated Americans"

Although I haven't applied for an EAD yet...

HELL NO!

We(Canadians) have every right to work here.
They should spend their energy complaining on the illegals.

My thoughts exactly.

CanadaCanadians feeling guilty about taking jobs away from Americans?
I was on a job forum today and it seems that I inadvertently hit a nerve on some Americans, who feel that "foreign professionals" should not "steal" jobs from some Americans. I personally don't feel guilty. Your thoughts??

Canadatransfering credit history to USA
We're not going to bother with the credit transfers. We've transferred some money from my CAD account to our joint account here in the US, and then we'll add my name to the account and I'll build my credit from there :)

Canadatransfering credit history to USA

It's nice to know you got through the system Tina&Roland. Do you care to share the name of that credit union in case it's something we could look into?

I was told by Equifax in Canada that I could request my credit history be sent to (or transferred) Equifax USA but Trans Union said this was not possible and Experian is no longer in Canada. So one out of 3 may be better than nothing and we'll see what that leads to.

Hi Rod James,

Sorry for the late reply. Our credit union is called the Lake Michigan Credit Union. Perhaps you can try them.

Good luck!

Canadatransfering credit history to USA

Hi all,
and thanks for everyone's help to get me down here. we are now settling into our rented house in Canby, Oregon. I am overwhelmed by all the logistical details that go with starting over here and getting a new business started...not for the faint of heart. I'm taking it one day at a time.

One big matter has to do with establishing US credit history so we can buy a house. A helpful representative at Chase bank told us we should be able to have credit history transferred and gave us numbers to call the 3 main branches that deal with credit ratings: Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union. He said they deal with international issues all the time.

the mortgage broker we initially talked to said we would need to establish a year or two of US credit history before they would consider us.

so, does anyone have experience with transferring credit history to the US and can confirm it is in fact possible?

thanks

We recently bought a house and our loan officer told wanted us to show not just 2 years of credit history, but also 3 credit lines (e.g. 3 credit cards). My hubby only had 2 credit cards over the years and the year that he had a credit card in Canada didn't count (they also discounted my credit in Canada). There was some issue with the Fanny-Mae guidelines that if our mortgage company was to sell to the secondary market then this was the rule. Well, we fought hard and eventually our lender found this little credit union in Michigan that would not sell to a secondary market. So we were good. In the end, we found out that what would have been acceptable was to show our lease, telephone bills, etc. to show that we had good credit.

It was a mess, but it finally worked out and we bought a nice little house. Closing and move-in is in 2 days! :)

CanadaAuto Insurance in the U.S.
We were initially with Geico, which was about $300 for 6 months. Then we decided to switch to Amica because we needed homeowner's insurance. Usually you'll get a better rate when you have both home and auto with the same company. We just found out about Amica Mutual by reading consumer reports. If you need to file a claim, Amica's service is highly rated.

CanadaCanadian degrees?
Depending on the field, it may be easier to go through recruiters/headhunters. They can translate to their clients (potential employers) the Canadian degree to the U.S. one. A B.Com. in Accounting in Canada, for example, is equivalent to B.A. in Accounting here in Indiana.
Tina&RolandFemaleCanada2010-04-19 13:11:00
CanadaAOS transferred???
Hopefully, you'll be a lucky one and get the EAD/AP approved in 50-60 days from your file date and your AOS approved in a month from your transfer. From what I've seen from VJ examples, there has been a slowdown of approvals since mid-March, but hopefully, it will pick up soon.
Tina&RolandFemaleCanada2010-04-19 16:09:00
CanadaAOS transferred???
Not sure how the selection is done, but a lucky few in each month do get their approvals before others with interview. I filed in January 2010, was transferred in early February, and got my approval in late March. There have been others in my month in the same boat as me, but at the same time, there are others still waiting.

In general, I think it's all based on luck.

CanadaKeeping Bank Accounts & Credit cards after move to USA?
I still have RRSP in my bank account and a balance in my checking, which I'm not planning to take out unless it's for emergency.

CanadaAOS'rs...

Yeah, we've had the same problem. I'm not too worried about ROC right now, but no company will let us add a second person to the bills, which is a little weird.

Congrats! :D

Congrats Tina! What are you going to be doing?

Thanks! I'll be working as a staff accountant for a mid-sized telecommunications company :)

Congrats on the job, and the approval! :)

CanadaAOS'rs...

AP approved today but still no touches on my EAD, not that I really expect anything to show up online for it as it took till my biometrics for it to even show up online.

Congrats!

I wouldn't quite worry about the online thing, mostly because the notifications can be somewhat delayed. For mine, even though my Green card production was ordered on 3/22, I noticed that I was actually PR since 3/18 (last touch I had was 3/15).

It says:

The I485 APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS was transferred and is now being processed at a USCIS office.

Then you should be ok as long as it doesn't say that it's transferred from CSC to NBC.

CanadaAOS'rs...

I haven't had the conditions removed from mine either- I can't be bothered. If it cases me a problem in the future then I'll change it, but other than that I'm with you Sapphire

Tina- they call the USCIS information line the "misinformation line" for a reason. People have been given some really awful advice from it, and sometimes they just tell you things that are completely wrong. So, I really wouldn't take what the IO said and plan around it. Working at a national center and not a local office likely means they really have no idea what goes on, "in the field."

Thanks, Huggles. I think calling them did more harm than good, so I'm just going to stay put from now on. :)

Wait, so we can no longer use the CSC transfer as reliable evidence that they won't interview?

Apparently not

CanadaAOS'rs...
Hi all,

So I called the USCIS customer service line today and was transferred to an IO. She said that the case was pending and the last thing they have on file is my biometrics. The next thing to prepare for is an interview. I was dumbfounded and asked if it was at CSC and she said yes, but since I came on a family based visa, I need an interview (she was obviously just saying that from experience, I suppose).

Anyway, so far I have not received an e-mail saying that my case has been transferred back to NBC. However, in order to prepare for such a case, I just wanted to know from those who have experienced it how long it took from the case being transferred to having an interview date.

Thanks so much!

Tina

That's actually good. I hope they fix the problems. I still had my AP under "initial review" but I got my AP yesterday in the mail, so they are probably not as up-to-date on the info.
