CanadaVERY last minute tax info missing - interview in 9 hours!!!

Hi

I feel like an idiot posting this, but somehow we missed that Vancouver asks for 3 years of tax info.  I don't know how we missed this, but my interview is this morning!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I do have a letter from her employer stating her salary, and a letter from her bank, stating her savings/chequing. I also have 4 months of pay stubs.

I will tell her to call me and wake me up (luckily she is 3 hours ahead), so that we can try to sort this out, but if anyone can chime in and offer me some advice, that would be AMAZING!!!

Prayers please!

Mark

Yay, congrats to the both of you! That's so very exciting. smile.png I can't wait for it to be the rest of us!

I really wish I was able to interview in Vancouver. I'm over in Victoria, so it would just be a matter of hopping the ferry. As it stands, I have to take my medical exam in Surrey, and then fly to Montreal for my interview. sad.png

Why do you have to go to Montreal?  That doesn't make any sense:\

Congrats!  That sounds like an INCREDIBLY stressful morning - I had to print out her tax documents Wednesday morning, and that was bad enough!  I left at 8 AM as well, just to be safe, and took the train.

When are you moving?

Good news guys - we got approved!

The interview was fairly straightforward, and actually not too hard!  Stressful though, as the guys behind the counter don't really tell you much of what is going on or what they are doing, they just ask a few questions.

Good luck to all of you!

Medical done, Dr. Cheema is great, very friendly. I did have to get the MMR vaccine again cause my dr.s office only had results for the measles and rubella but not mumps. Otherwise he was very chatty and friendly. I Pick up results tomorrow then interview Thursday. He did say there were a lot of Calgarians through this week.

Did he do the vaccine for you there?  I had the vaccine records indicate that as well(MMR#1 as a kid, but then only MR), so I had the MMR#2 done last week.

Good luck!

My medical was yesterday at Dr. Cheema's, and my interview is tomorrow.  Everything went well, and it was really easy!  I'll be heading back there this afternoon to pick up the results, and then I'll start getting nervous/ready for the interview tomorrow!

Hey guys, thanks for filling my thread up with posts - I got really excited to see that it had gone "viral", only to see that it was you to crazy's who had filled it up:)

Anyways, has anyone seen or found a solid, comprehensive guide doing these types of tax returns?  I am looking for info on forms, what to report, etc, hopefully in an easy to read format?  Tax stuff kind of blows my mind.

Thanks!

CanadaFiling taxes in Canada - 2 Canadian Citizens

Hi everyone!

I am in need of some tax help, I think our situation is a little well...complicated.

My wife and I are both Canadian citizens, but she is also American.  I have been reading that in order to file for my taxes ( I moved 09/2013, but didn't work in the US in 2013) I need to do it in paper, but I have also read that I can do it online.  Which is true?  Any advice on the easiest way to do this?

I also had a business in Canada, and I need to pay some GST owing from 2013 (due by April 30th I believe). I am pretty sure I can do this via my bank account (still open in Canada), does anyone know for sure? If not I can find out.

But the really tricky part is that my wife and I are both Canadian citizens, and I just realized that this might make filling tricky.  Do I need to file as married in Canada?  I assume that I do, but do I need to include my wife then?  She has never worked/filed in Canada before (she moved when she was 18, just before college).  Could we file married but separately?

If we do have to file together, will her 2013 US income be taxed?

Thanks!

Mark

CanadaGetting EI withheld taxes back...

Hi

I am living in the US now, and life is great!  Visa journey helped SOO much to get me here!

I claimed EI after I moved, and now I am at the end of my claim.

I am wondering if, when I do my taxes next year, is there any way to get the 25% tax that the Canadian government withheld back?

Thanks, I guess I will just have to explain it to them that I was working till October but we got married in August. And then we waited for paperwork to put together before mailing it in February of next year. Oh GOD! I really did take forever to mail this thing in.

But thanks for your reply, I couldnt find too many people here with a TN to GC transition. Wouldn't my stay here (over stay I should say) not be considered as bad as being here on a visitor visa? I mean, I was really here to work to and didnt even know who my husband was at the time I entered the country so really there was no intent.

CanadaEntered on TN visa, Quit job, Married USC and applied for AOS

Hi guys,

I just filed my I-130 & I-485 today and I am a little worried about the following things:

1. I did not submit 2013's tax return form with I-864 yet because he hasn't filed for it yet. (Sent 2011, 2012 returns+W2's copies as well as 2013's W2s only with employer letter + pay stubs)

2. I did not write my former spouse's DOB because I don't remember (I attached the divorce decree though)

3. Did I mail it to the right address? this is the address I found on I-130 instructions (if filing both i-485+I-130)

        USCIS

        Attn: FBAS

        131 South Dearborn - 3rd Floor,

         Chicago, IL 60603-5517

4. Was I not suppose to file I-131 (EAD) since I have already quit my job back in October and so my TN visa isn't really valid anymore ?? Can you only file I-131 if in valid status? It's too late now, I've already mailed it in today.

THANKS!!!

I think I'm panicking too much!!

CanadaChoosing the best method CAN to USA

I purposely left the quote blank and I'm letting you know what you're suggesting is both illegal and against the TOS.

Do you know HOW MANY PEOPLE have done it here in VJ? I am just quoting what hundreds of people have asked here.

I DID NOT suggest any ILLEGAL activity. What about the people that post here that they have entered on B2 visa.. n then give a little story about how they "FELL IN LOVE" or what not and just ended up staying here.

In fact, my own lawyer SUGGESTED that if I was to visit Canada while being married to a USC, I shouldn't do the following:

1. Apply for AOS right after returning, wait at least 60 days

2. Do not leave the US while AOS is processing.

NONE OF THIS is ILLEGAL.

CanadaChoosing the best method CAN to USA

I would like to add only to your point about TN visa.

I got my TN visa and the job related to it VERY EASILY. Employers do NOT have to jump any hoops whatsoever. I repeat, they DO NOT have to prove that they could not hire an American because they are NOT sponsoring you.

The only thing you would have to convince to your employer is that you can EASILY get the TN visa upon getting the job offer. The more easy you make it (the TN route) seem like to your employer, the likely they will be to offer you a job.

After getting your job, you can cross the border by road and get your TN visa there as it seems easier to get it from there than at the airports (airport officers do not seem to know too much about TN visa).

I got my TN visa within 20 mins and my employers was first hesitant about it but after I reassured them that it is VERY easy to get, they were on board. All they had to do is be available for a phone call just in case the immi officers needed to reach someone. They even altered the Title on my job letter to make it fit exactly as it states on the NAFTA list of allowed field. Do not worry about get the TN visa, finding a job is harder than that.

CanadaFunds in Canadian Account

Actually you can transfer up to $100,000 daily!

Get no-fee wire transfers4 of up to $100,000 daily between your Canadian and U.S. based TD accounts over the phone.

And no one in US will give you as good exchange rates on wire transfers as TD will. I know the  currency difference isn't THAT much but when you are transferring SO much money, then it does make a difference.

Good Luck!

CanadaFunds in Canadian Account

I am not sure about the tax implications but if you're looking for QUICK transfers across borders for amounts >10,000 then you should go with TD cross border banking.

TD will allow you to transfer up to $25,000 within 24 hours and you can have those funds in your account the same day if you call before noon to schedule the transfer. Only important thing to note is that both the Canadian and US account must be in your name. Thats how I pay my bills in Canada if I have to make transfers in my Cdn account. Also, the US TD account is FREE as long as your $100 in your US TD acct at all times.

CanadaGoing to miss Canada

The other thing I find extremely bizarre in this country is:

YOU CANNOT DEDUCT Student loans expenses from your taxes AND you can only deduct the interest portion which is also capped for individuals making over $130K. So if you make (COMBINED - husband and wife) more than $130K then you cannot deduct anything from your student loan expenses.

I remember getting nice refunds coming right out of university in Canada because I had paid about $30K in student loans and every year Revenue Canada allowed to deduct a portion of the student loan from my income as expenses. >>>>MEANING >>>Canadian government ENCOURAGED graduates to pay back their student loans with policies of that kind.

Here in this country, you cannot:

A) deduct student loans paid in the past as expenses at all...

B) Interest on student loans can only be deductible for families making $130K or less (After 80K only 50% is allowed to be deducted - so stupid)

C) If you do pay back your student loans in any given year - there's absolutely to tax benefit of doing that. On the other hand, mortgage interest is deductible which only encourages people to take on MORE debt in a form of mortgage

D) Rental expenses are not deductible AT ALL at the federal level, only some states allow for some relief for the expenses of paying house rent. Whereas in Canada, if you are a tenant, the government allows for some rental cost to be deducted as expenses at the federal so people can SAVE for the down payment of a potential buying of a home in the future

serena28Not TellingCanada2014-04-15 17:33:00
CanadaGoing to miss Canada

Sounds like a high deducible plan.  Ours is similar, $5000 until the deductible is met (but we can use our HSA to pay for anything) and after that everything is covered.   It's not ideal for someone who's pregnant so you may want to look into when you can change your plan.  Hubs and I are pretty healthy so really it's only for my yearly tests and if we need to go to emerg.  The nice part is the saving into the HSA if there is an issue, and we can use that until we're 65.  Since he's gov't we'll always have access to good plans, the hard part for us is picking out the plan.

$6000 for individual insurance is high but family it's ok. I have private health insurance and my deductible is about $3500 (kinda high I think) and after the baby comes it will jump to $7000!!! In my opinion, it is really expensive especially when I add the cost of $400/month premium (that is $4800/year)

So this cost of medical is quite high in my opinion because I've never had to pay for any medical expenses. My health insurance from work was really good but the job wasn't as good as my hubby's. I feel that one person in the family (husband or wife) has to just work somewhere to get good health insurance. My sister in law is also having a baby and she's paid only $20 copay for her monthly visits so far (X5 visits so far) and her health insurance is basically covering for everything else. She works for a bigger firm...

I wonder what old people do in this country? Like someone just said, people that have jobs (middle class families) they get stuck with medical bills and people that have NO income whatsoever because of whatever reason end up getting full coverage from medicaid. It really makes no sense..

serena28Not TellingCanada2014-04-15 17:16:00
CanadaGoing to miss Canada

I miss healthcare in Canada. I've had one of the worst experiences in terms of healthcare in this country. Until I had a job, my coverage was pretty good but right after marriage when I quit, we had to get a private health plan. Private health insurance is expensive and so far (because I'm pregnant) We have paid about $3500 in doctor visits and tests done in only the last 4 months.

It is so confusing with the deductible and out of pocket deductible and all that gibberish which really didn't make sense to me until we really had to start paying. Oh and the the $3500 doesn't even include the $400 PER MONTH insurance cost for just me. It is ridiculous!

Oh and thank god for Obamacare changes because if it wasn't for that, NO ONE and I mean NO insurance company would've given me health coverage since I got pregnant BEFORE enrolling in to a health plan. Starting 2014, they cannot reject you for health coverage with a  precondition so thank god for that!

CanadaHow'd You Move Everything?

Just hire a moving company and let them take care of it.

I moved a lot of stuff from Toronto to NYC for $1300 (including sofa, bed, mattress and about 8 big uhaul boxes) Yes it was a cheap deal but they took longer (about 14 days because they have to consolidate your stuff with others.

Go online and call some cross border moving companies.

The other thing you can do is that you can fly over and usually its much cheaper to pay the extra cost of additional suitcase (on international flights its only $75 but I think with US flights its $50 per suit case with 50lbs allowed limit) $50 per suitcase is way cheaper than hiring a company to move your stuff. If you have heavy boxes then this option will probably not work.

You can even try shipping companies (not moving companies) that can move your boxes for a $100-$125 ( I shipped  boxes to my sister from Toronto to Calgary with blender and kitchen stuff through Fedex for about $200 per box - the boxes WERE HEAVY!) So you can fly with suitcases and ship the remaining boxes through shipping companies. Moving companies can be tricky so this might be a better option since you have no furniture.

Wait a second. I mailed a N-400 for my spouse (LPR) two days ago. We have been married for 4+ years. She's had a Green Card for a full 3 years now.

I looked through the Instructions for Form N-400 and there was no mention of tax transcripts. Is this going to present a problem?

The way I read it was tax transcripts were an option of the documents showing you're still married. When you leave the US for more than 6 months then that's when they're required. Refer to Form M-477.

My ceremony was scheduled for 10am, they then had to process everyone in which took about half hour, the actual ceremony started at 11am - with mine the judge talked about the history of the constitution for about 10 minutes, did the oath (5 minutes) then he talked some more about why it is such a great honor to be a US Citizen this was another 45 minutes.  So an hour for the ceremony.  If you have a very young child I would not take them unless they can sit still and be quiet, my son is 11 yrs old and said he found it interesting to see the oath but the history lesson he could have done without, or at least a shortened down version!!

My son's also 11 (12 in November)!  We're scheduled at 9 am for the ceremony.  My son's school day starts at 7:10 am....just too early for learning!
